This novel definitely has asymptotes. Throughout its plot, Martel's story approaches the impossible, but can never be quite labeled as "impossible." Similarly, a curve on a graph will approach an asymptote, but will never, ever connect with that asymptote.
The graph { f(x) = 1/x } on the left comes to mind: a math metaphor.
f(x)=1/x
Much of the novel is almost unbelievable. What do you buy? What do you sell?

This is a great example of a high-school blog! I am impressed.

I buy that he believes in 3 religions. I believe that the lesson taught by Pi and Ravi's dad was important and necessary. I also believe that this book is a good example of Darwin’s law of natural selection. What I do not believe is that a boy could last 227 days on a lifeboat with a tiger. God could also not have woken Pi up during the storm, why would it wake him up and let his family stay sleeping and end up dying? Zoos are also not paradise for animals, yes they are fed well and taken care of but if something were to happen to the zoo and they were send into the wild, they would die, they have no defenses to survive outside the zoo. This is a very good book and a lot of it is believable but there is also some parts where you doubt the facts you are given. How would a boy and a 450 pound tiger get along for so long? How can someone so religious not falter in his beliefs after what has happened to him?
I believe that God woke Pi up during the storm. Pi says many times that he is a very deep sleeper and normally just doesn't wake up to thud in the night underneath the constant and unrelenting noise of the ship. Even if he did wake up just by accident then why would he have went to investigate and explore? Pi said that Ravi had always been the one to drag him along on wild adventures in the night not the other way around. God left his family to die to test Pi's devotion to him. I believe that God intentionally let his family die and for him to survive on a boat to test his devotion. I haven't read far enough to tell what happens but I would predict that Pi continues to remain faithful throughout his 227 day trip. In the opening chapters while the author is "interviewing" Pi he slowly begins to notices the scattered religious symbols each one representing a different religion. This could be a reminder to him of his past or it's showing the reader that he still believes in all three religions. I also buy Pi believing in three separate but connected religions. Religion tries to teach us our place within the "Big Picture." This gives us purpose in our lives directing our efforts outward on others, not inward and selfishly.
p 1.
From the novel, I don't buy the whole ship sinking and the three animals that Pi shares a boat with. I just seems so unrealistic from the beginning. I don't understand why the crew members of the ship didn't wake any of Pi's family up to warn them. According to Pi, he somehow woke up on his own and then was thrown overboard by the crew members. This seems kind of weird, and it makes me wonder if the crew somehow made the ship sink in order to kill all the animals and Pi's family, but there was no reason for the crew to ever hate them. Also, I don't understand why only four animals survived to get on Pi's boat. What happened to the other animals and how come they weren't able to escape and be lucky like the four? I don't buy any of this, but it's all a symbol to teach the reader something. It's to let the reader know that life will be hard sometimes and that it will throw you curveballs everynow and then, but you have to get through all the hard times with confidence and determination. Don't let hardships defeat you.
I don’t believe that he truly believes in all three religions, he might like to think he does but I think he just likes the attention he receives from believing in all three. He just likes to learn since he is so young he finds everything about religion highly interesting. When I is on the boat listing what he has he states that there is on god, so that means he has settled on believing in the Christian god, he still talks about the others but only as reference. I do buy though that he could survive that long out on the ocean but I find that he has a lot on his side like all the supplies. I don’t think that all of that could have been in the locker. But I guess it was meant to have 32 people survive in the boat so there could be a possibility that all of the materials were there. I do buy that he could have also survived with the tiger there, he always fed Richard Parker so there was no need for the tiger to kill Pi, without Pi the tiger would have surely died a slow death
Mallory's words: "come they weren't able to escape and be lucky like the four? I don't buy any of this, but it's all a symbol to teach the reader something. It's to let the reader know that life will be hard sometimes and that it will throw you curveballs everynow and then, but you have to get through all the hard times with confidence and determination. THESE EVENTS ARE NOT IMPOSSIBLE, RIGHT? MALLORY IS EXCEPTIONAL AT MAKING RELEVANCE AND MEANING AND AT NOTICING LESSONS.
I am the kind of guy who enjoys to taste brand-new things. Currently I'm fabricating my hold photovoltaic panels. I am making it all by myself without the help of my staff. I'm utilizing the net as the only way to acheive this. I saw a truly amazing site that explains how to contruct solar panels and wind generators. The web site explains all the steps needed for solar panel construction.
I am not really sure bout how accurate the info given there is. If some guys over here who have xp with these works can have a peak and give your feedback in the site it would be awesome and I'd extremely value it, cause I extremely like solar panel construction.
Tnx for reading this. You people are the best.

Chap. 94, pg. 285 “It’s important in life to conclude things properly. Only then can you let go. Otherwise you are left with words you should have said but never did, and your heart is heavy with remorse.” I think this a quote that most people can easily relate to and one that is very true in life. Everyone has lost someone they love in some way, shape or form. Being able to say goodbye, good luck, take care farewell creates a sense of closure. I also think that the quote serves as a reminder to tell the people in your life that you care about how much they mean to you while you have the chance to do so.
Chap. 20,pg. 79
“The presence of God is the finest of rewards.” I think this quote is one that might get overlooked while reading this book. This quote expresses how much Pi loves God. In the story Pi wanted to be involved in three different religions, Christian, Muslim, and Hindu. He said he wanted to be involved in all three simply because he loves God. Many people in life devote themselves to God. They go to church, pray, have rituals, and many other things, but not many people if any would consider becoming more than one religion. To me this quote means that every day we are so busy in life, and we strive to be better people, but the one thing that means the world to me is that I can stop what I am doing and know that God is with me. This is a feeling that overwhelms me with happiness and self satisfaction no matter what have gone throughout the day. By feeling this way I have an understanding why Pi wanted to be involved in theses three different religions. I believe he thinks that if he does this than God will always be around him, and his rewards will never end.
Ch.74 Pg.264 “I would point at the sky and say aloud, “This is God’s Ear!”” This quote got my attention because it reminded me of how God is everywhere and how he hears everything you say or think. I think this is also important because some people believe that God can only hear you when you’re in a church, and Pi is saying that he can hear you everywhere you are so you are never alone. Some people also think that God is only listening when you pray, when he actually hears every thought you will ever conceive. I think this was an important concept for Pi because it was comforting that he was never truly alone on his six month voyage.
Chap. 20, pg. 79
“The presence of God is the finest of rewards.” This quote expressed how pi did believe in god and how much he truly loved god. Throughout this book, you can tell how much he loved his religion, like how in the beginning he wanted to be involved in the three different religions, Christian, Muslim, and Hindu. I feel as if people always go through so many different things and go through so many obstacles but at the end of the day I know that god is the reward of everything and he's always there and I know that's how pi feels because god will never leave your side he's always there till the end.
Chapter 1 pg 6&7
"The reason death sticks so closely to life isn’t biological necessity- it’s envy. Life is so beautiful that death has fallen in love with it, a jealous, possessive love that grabs at what it can. But life leaps over oblivion lightly, losing only a thing or two of no importance, and gloom is but the passing shadow of a cloud."
I believe this quote means that life in general is a beautiful thing and everything in it. Life and death are a companion in a way because one would not precede to exist without the other. Both are a necessity towards every living thing on Earth. Death takes away things in life and does in a way grabs at what it can. Death can succeed in taking life away from the living, but new life will always be born. This causing death to envy what it can’t create but only what it can take away. Life out does death in giving happiness and beauty to the world, but death can only bring sadness and gloom because it takes away the beauty. Death is in a way jealous of what life can bring, causing them to always be a pair.
"It's important in life to conclude things properly. Only then can you let go. Otherwise you are left with words you should have said but never did, and your heart is heavy with remorse."
In my opinion this quotes means if you never say what your heart is telling you to say, then you will go the rest of your life wishing you had said what you really wanted to say. Only then when you have gotten everything off your chest, will you feel relieved and confortable with yourself & where life is taking you. Everything happens for a reason, so you must always stand up for yourself and say what your feeling no matter what the outcome is. Believe in yourself and you will go a long way in life. Remember to trust your gut, but always follow your heart.
Chap. 78 pg. 274
"Sometimes your life is pendulum swing from one to the other." This particular quote caught my eye because it seems to have a deeper meaning to it. Pi describes that there are two opposites, boredom and terror. He goes onto giving examples of how these two opposites compare to each other. During his struggles for survival he experiences both, sometimes at the same time. At one point Pi gets so bored that he sinks into a a coma-like state. Then when the sea becomes rough he is overcome with emotions and "whipped into a frenzy." He explains that in his boredom there were elements of terror where he would just break down and cry and scream. The meaning I got from this was that life has its ups and downs, but you just have to take it head on and "weather the storm."
Chapter 27 Page 94
"If you don't let technology help you, if you resist good ideas, you condemn yourself to dinosarhood."
This quote means that if people do not let the development of new technology take a part in their life that they will be left in the past. Every year technology is being upgraded to something bigger and better, so if you dont stay up to date ( or at least somewhat up to date) you will be falling behind the rest of society. What i take from this quote is that technology is an assistant in life and if you dont chose to use its your own fault. It can only help you and cant do much harm at all. Technology si what keeps us up to date.
Chapter 74 pg. 208
“Faith in God is an opening up, a letting go, a deep trust, a free act of love-but sometimes it was hard to love”.
Hebrews 11:1 Now faith is the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen.
Personally, I believe the quote and scripture are equivalent. I say this because without faith what substance is there for the things you anticipate. Also being able to obtain faith you ought to be a believer in God. As we learn to mold ourselves of our religion it is our duty to shape the faith, and form the faith, and encourage the faith and to teach the faith throughout our lifetime. Although complicated times may arise in life, and God may not seem to come when you want him, but he will be there right on time. He won’t put to much on you, that you can’t bare.
Chap. 78, Pg. 217
“Only death consistently excites your emotion, whether contemplating it when life is safe and stale, or fleeting it when life is threatened and precious.”
I believe that this quote is trying to tell us that death only happens sometimes in your life, and you have to decide if it will make you feel safe and stale or if it will make you want to run from accepting it because your life is majorly effected by it. Sometimes it can be for the good and sometimes it can be for the bad. It could be so bad that it just makes your emotions of fear and being extremely scared be known to death itself and others around. But everyone has a differently outlook on death and how it effects them.
Demi willman p.6
My quote is about the “exhilarating story of gut survival of strange island with people eating trees and flying fish that appears like manna”. Eating tress and flying fish is not really what it means it happened in the life of pi but in reality its basically saying that you will eat what you can get your hands on no matter what it is how bad it may taste or smell. The life of pi is mostly about surviving which pi and Richard parker did to tell their story. In real life if you were stuck on an island you will eat as many tress as u need to stay alive including algae like they did. Their might necessarily be other people on the island but there is most likely to be other animals that could put you at risk. I know if I was stuck on an island I would not want to be alone because I would need someone there for support and to push me through it because it will get tough and you will become overwhelmed with the changes. That is the true meaning of gut survival working hard to get out of a bad situation that could be deadly.
Quote: “I spread my arms wide and say aloud, THESE ARE GOD’S WIDE ACRES!”
In this part of the book Pi has been stranded on this boat with Richard Parker for awhile now. He and Richard Parker are hungry and definitely need each other to stay alive. Pi truly has no one to talk to on the boat. Already he was spiritually challenged; he practiced Hindu, Muslim and Catholic all at once. Early in this novel he was confronted by three people about his religious beliefs. I feel that for a person like Pi in the type of situation he has been in to still have faith in God truly shows his faith. He is the type of person true religious people need to be like because he believes in something he can’t see. He still has faith though he was on a boat for 277 days with a 450 pound Bengal Tiger. Though Pi is spiritually challenged he has faith and still believes in God.
Chapter 1, page 6-7
“The reason death sticks so closely to life isn’t biologically necessity-its envy. Life is so beautiful that death has fallen in love with it, a jealous, possessive love that grabs at what it can. But life leaps over oblivion lightly, losing only a thing or two of importance and gloom is but the passing of a cloud.”
This quote to me is beautiful. I think that it explains that life is so miraculous and exciting and beautiful that even death can’t stay away. That death is jealous because that it can’t be as wonderful as life that it takes away life from other people. Death feels it is no comparison to life so it gets revenge and takes away from it. Making it feel important. I think that’s a neat way to think about it. It makes you feel like death has a reason instead of just people dying for no reason at all. I also like the part when it states “life leaps over oblivion lightly, only losing a thing or two of importance and gloom is but a passing of a cloud.” I think that this means that even though death is jealous and comes to life to take away things that are important to us, we pull through and we leap over the hurdles that death brings. Life is powerful and strong and not even death can stop it.
"Faith in God is an opening up, a letting go, a deep trust, a free act of love-but sometimes it was so hard to love." - Ch. 74 pg. 208
I personally think that this quote out of "The Life of Pi" is about believeing in something and always having trust in one thing but sometimes things get so hard that you start to doubt. Pi believed in many religions and while he was stuck on the lifeboat he practiced all of them and tried to hold onto his hope. But there were points in time when Pi didn't think he was going to make it. I think that this quote is about holding on and trusting that what you believe in matters and hope can always get you through any rough spot in life. Even if no one is around so that you have a someone to lean on doesnt mean that you are completely alone. Faith in God can help anyone get through a hard time.

Chapter 99, page 297
“Love is hard to believe, ask any lover. Life is hard to believe, ask any scientist. God is hard to believe, ask any believer. What is your problem with hard to believe?”
In my opinion this quote simply means that just because you can’t feel, or touch, or see something doesn’t meant that it doesn’t exist. You can’t touch love, but a lot of people believe in love. You can’t see life being made, but it obviously exist. And, you can’t touch or physically feel God, but a lot of people out there believe in God. You can’t really stop people from believing what they believe, because it’s what they want to believe. And, in the story, Pi doesn’t care if they believe him because he knows what he went through and he knows what really happened. And just because they don’t believe Pi’s first story about his adventure with the animals and the lifeboat, doesn’t mean that it doesn’t exist.
“You must take life the way it comes at you and make the best of it”-Ch. 35 Pg. 91
I think this quote means sometimes you can't control the outcome of some things, and when that happens, you just need to learn to accept whatever that outcome is. It is only good for weak and unable, you just have to be who you are and focus on what you want to be in life and try to make the best of it. You have to do your best with whatever is thrown your way and nobody can control one’s own destiny. You have to use your talents to make your life and somebody else’s better.
"This was the terrible cost of Richard Parker. He gave me a life, my own, but at the expense of taking one. He ripped the flesh off the man's frame and cracked his bones. The smell of blood filled my nose. Something in me died then that has never come back to life."-Chapter 90, page 255
This quote shows Pi in one of his darkest moments. The relatively shorter sentences here seem to imply a closing off. Pi can only bear to remember so much. He can list the sensations but he does not dig into the awful event's effect on his psyche. This moment, more than any other in the text, seems to mark an absence of God; it is also the moment where Pi's life is most threatened. Pi's guilt here is more easily understandable in the second version of the story, where it is he who kills the Frenchman. Either way, if Richard Parker is seen as a symbol of the pure survival instinct, this is the one moment in the text where that instinct wins out completely over morality and control.
Chap 73 Pg 208
Quote: I cannot think of a better way to spread the faith. No thundering from the pulpit, no condemnation from bad churches, no peer pressure, just a book of scripture quietly waiting to say hello”
This quote shows Pi’s religious view summed up in a few sentences. But this quote can also fit life in general, things that are great in life don’t need to be forced upon you. Naturally you have the choice to make your own decisions. I think Pi understands what he wants out of his faith and walks the path he wants. And he understands that religions have good intentions but he feels there’s a better way of doing things and I think he's right. To have true "freedom" you have to oppose the "force" put before you.
"Faith in God is an opening up, a letting go, a deep trust, a free act of love- but sometimes it was so hard to love." Pg. 208, Chp. 74
I think almost all of us can relate to this quote, even if we don't have a necessarily strong faith in God. Because everyone has faith in something. We have faith in our friends, families, and lovers. We have faith in life. And, most importantly, we have faith in ourselves. And now matter what kind of faith we have, it requires us to open up and trust. To let go of reason and to love, no matter what. And there are gonig to be times for all of us when its so hard to love. Times when we're down and feel like nothing is going right. Times when we've been betrayed by someone we trusted with everything. But whats important is that you keep that faith and that love, because no one can be happy without it.
Chapter 71 pg 203
“Be sure not to break eye contact.” Yes this quote may be very short and simple however in life you must not let your guards down. If you face your problems in life with your head down and no eye contact, many people will just walk all over you and not take you seriously and most likely take you for granted. And even of your not a confrontational person, people may take you kindness for weakness. But if you keep your head up high, and just simply look the person in the eye it shows that you are confident in yourself, in what you stand for, and show that you have a lot of self-respect for your self and the other person’s feelings.
Chapter 99 page 297
"Love is hard to believe, ask any lover.Life is hard to believe, ask any scientist.God is hard to believe, ask any believer."
This quote could have many meanings to it.Yet my personal meaning of this qoute is simple. It is basically stating that alot of things in the world are hard to believe. But in the end, it all comes down to what you truly want to believe. No one can make you believe anything unless you have some sort of faith in it.Pi states that love is hard to believe. I feel that this is true because many people or couples get hurt by it everyday. I am a female ,so I think boys do hurtful things to women because they don't think and they are immature. When some one gets heart broken it isn't a easy thing to deal with.Life is hard to believe beacause there are some many different theories of how it first began. Some believers think it started with Adam and Eve.Others think life came from the big bang theory, apes, or a cave man.No one is for sure how life came about.God is hard to believe because many people in different countries have different religions.Pi believed in three separate ones yet he connected with all of them.In conclusion i think that you should use your mind to decide what is true to you.
On page 209, in chapter 74 it says-
“Despair was a heavy blackness that let no light in or out.”
This quote just means one thing to me. It seems to be screaming one thing at me. Pi seems like he’s kind of given up jus t a little bit here. But later on in the book, we know this isn’t true. This quote to me says I’ve given up. I am not agreeing with this quote. We should never give up in whatever we do. When you’re trying to do something and you’re trying to better yourself. Do you just give up? No. You’ll never get better and you won’t succeed. All in all, don’t give up and good things will happen.
"You must take life the way it comes at you and make the best of it" chapter 35 page 90
I feel like this quote means that life comes at you in many different ways but no matter what you have to take the challenges and overcome them. For example pi was faced with many diffrent obstacles, and these obstacles for an average human being would've been way to overbareing. I also believe that this simply means that you have to take life as it is. Most of the time theirs Not much you can do to change the things that naturally come by life's bringings so therefore you take your situation and try to better it. personally in my life living by this works for me fine
Page 274
Pi said “Life…is like an end game in chess, a game with few pieces.” What I think this means is that when you don’t really have that much to live for you think life doesn’t really matter to you. Which could mean a number of things, like you don’t have many people in you life. Or in pi’s case he lost everyone in his family and all he had left was Richard parker. Like in chess when there are only a few pieces left you know the game is about to end. Pi felt that his life was about end right there on the boat. Once someone captures the others king, the game is over, just like in life.
Quote- “When it is dark, the darkness is claustrophobic.” Ch. 76, pg. 216
I think this quote means that when someone is confused or troubled that it is difficult to come out of this stage. There are many obstacles to overcome when you or someone is troubled or confused. You cannot let yourself down and beat yourself up because you or someone is confused. When someone is troubled it usually affects others around that person. I think Pi said this when he might have been confused because Richard Parker is letting him tame him. Even though Richard Parker tried to paw at Pi sometimes when he was getting tamed, he never tried to go for the throat or try to kill him. Pi never gave up and never beat himself up for failing.
Chapter 85, pg. 233
" At moments of wonder, it is easy to avoid small thinking, to entertain thoughts that span the universe, that capture both thunder and tinkle, think and thin, the near and the far. "
This quote, to me, means that when thinking to yourself, it is hard to imagine everything. You find youself thinking about just the small things and forgetting about the ones that really matter. Or thinking too much about the big things, and not enjoying the little things in life. I think this quote is stating that it is hard to enjoy both the big and little things in life, simply because your too busy worrying about one or the other. Maybe it is saying that everyone needs to take a step back, and start appreciating and enjoying everything in life, not just the small things, or not just the big things.
“There's no place like home.” I'm pretty sure most of you have heard this saying. This saying is really true to me. I believe there is no place like home. My home is the sweetest of them all. My home is my everything. I love coming home after a long dreadful day at school. At home my loved ones are here, and everything I love. I mean this home is where I grew up. I've been here for 18 years now. So why would I call any other place home? I don't think I can ever call another place home. I can't even be away from home for a long time. And if I am gone for a long period of time I come home feeling brand new because there's no place like home and im sure a lot of people can say the same thing.
(Page 17, chapter 4)
Chapter 74 Pg. 208
“Faith in God is an opening up, a letting go, a deep trust, a free act of love - but sometimes it was so hard to love.”
This quote is so pretty to me. My faith has always been in question. This quote spoke to me because it is so hard to love. Everything in life makes it hard to believe in god. Everyone has questioned god sometime in their life, they may not want to admit it but I have a feeling they have. We all have questions for god, but we never get answers; which is one of the reasons why it makes it very hard for me to have that free act of love. To have faith is a great opening up, letting go and being able to love something that you know will be there for you. But for me, it’s different. It is hard to open up, let go and to love something that has taken so many things from me. Yes I do know that, sometimes it is their time, but I just don’t understand how some people can be so healthy and just be taken away in an instant. My faith isn’t black and white, or even grey. I believe that the people who were taken from me are still with me, looking over me, protecting me, even though they are not physically with me. That is one of the few things I can say that I truly believe in. So my faith in god isn’t exactly a complete trust in god, or an opening up to him or even believing in him. It is about the people who I have loved in my life and knowing that they were always there for me and that they are still there for me.
“There is always a grinning skull at my side to remind me of the folly of human ambition.” Pi said this in chapter one page six he basically quoted a quote. But what I think he is trying to say is that in the back of his mind that he knows he’s in a crazy situation that doesn’t happen to most people and he has to be smart about it. In Pi’s situation you have to think smart every move he makes could mean life or death, especially with his ship mates. This quote may be confusing but once you dissect it and figure out the real meaning you realize it connects a lot to life.
"Love is hard to believe, ask any lover. Life is hard to believe ask any scientist. God is hard to believe, ask any believer. What is your problem with hard to believe?"
At this point in the book Pi has landed in Mexico and been hospitalized. Now Pi is being interviewed by two Japanese investigators to determine how the cargo ship sank. Pi tells his story to the investigators and they simply do not believe him. So Pi kinda goes off on them and says the quote i picked. I think that he is saying that just because you cannot see something does not mean that it isnt true. Pi has just been on an amazing journey of survival which is hard to believe but so is love, religion, and life, eventhough all of which exist and people believe in.
Pg. 161. "Only fear can defeat life." I think that this quote is easily related to by anyone. Everyone at sometime is afraid of something. It is a natural part of life. But, if you let it consume you, it will defeat you. You will be too afraid to try anything, do anything. If you live your whole life in fear, are you really even living? I also believe this quote is meant to warn people of fear and what effect it has on you. It is a very dangerous adversary. If you do not keep a close eye on it, it will overtake you, and you will be defeated.
Quote: “Be sure not to break eye contact.” Chapter 71 page 203
Okay, it’s not that great of a quote it may seem like, but it is the number one thing that caught my attention. I’m not exactly sure why. But when I did read this simple sentence it brought many things to my attention. Things like confidence, courage and of course strong eye contact. I’ve always thought those are things a person needs to make it by in life. Having confidence and courage opens so many doors in one person’s life. They truly define a person in my opinion and to be able to say that much about your self with just a strong look in the eyes is a bold statement in its self.
"Only death consistently excites your emotions, whether contemplating it when life is safe and stale, or fleeing it when life is threatened and precious." Ch.78 pg.217
This quote can be interpreted in several ways. First off you have to remember that Pi said this whenever he was almost in a state of giving up on life. He had lost all hope of survival and was basically holding on on a whim. He is contemplating death as a way to set himself free from his situation. The lifeboat that has housed him and kept him alive for so long, had become his prison. He says this quote in desperation, anything that could possibly free him from his state of vulnerability and uncertainty. In the second part of the quote he mentions fleeing death when life is "threatened and precious." My interpretation of this is that even whenever he is fleeing from death, it still gives him an emotional rise that can consistently keep him entertained as well as give him the feeling of actually being alive. That is just my way of interpreting and analyzing this quote though.
“Faith in God is an opening up, a letting go, a deep trust, a free act of love-but sometimes it was so hard to love.” From chapter 74, page 208.
I believe that this quote’s meaning is that sometimes people, no matter how much they love, believe, and trust God, sometimes they can “lose” their faith in Him. The reason why is because when someone in the world has nothing good and only bad events happening in their life they may feel as though God has forgotten about them. We all hear the great saying that ,”what doesn’t kill you makes you stronger” even if sometimes you feel like giving up. This quote will test your faith and your will to go on and make something better out of something that seems impossible.
"Life will defend itself no matter how small it is"
I picked this quote from "Life of Pi" not just because it relates to me but it also relates to other people. This quote is basically saying no matter how big or small you are your life still goes on. Also will fate and the help of God only you can determine your true destiny. For example a tiny bug such as an ant will do anything to survive and feed its family even though it knows there are other bugs or animals bigger than it. It’s all about the will to live and when you have the will to live then life will defend itself.
Chptr 4, pg 19 “I know zoos are no longer in people’s good graces. Religion faces the same problem. Certain illusions about freedom plague them both.”
When I was reading this book, this particular part stood out to me. It was just as I have heard it over and over again. Being a Christian and an active member in my church, I always get questioned. From things like “Isn’t it boring?” or discrimination things such as people holding you to a higher standard saying “aren’t you suppose to be perfect” or “you worship something you can’t see.” And I think this is exactly what this quote means. Many people do not go to zoos anymore. It’s not that popular and it’s up to it’s organization’s to keep interest alive. Just as religion is not so much popular anymore. People would rather use there time more sparingly, and not “waste” time. But what people don’t see is that religion is a faith based idea. You can’t just see something and believe that it is or is not true. You look at the supporting facts and interest, and then make your conclusion from there and you build the faith that’s necessary. I was raised in a family that was Christian. So that has a huge affect on things too. But as I am older I now understand more and still have my faith.
Chapter 23 Page 68 “God is universal.” I think this quote can apply to everyone, which is exactly why it says he is universal. It doesn’t matter where you are or what variations of god you believe, it’s okay to do that because he is universal. Everyone can have their own different opinion of him, and believe whatever they want about him. But anyone anywhere can still believe in him. He isn’t something only believed in one part of the world, or something only one religion can believe in. He is open to everyone and all religions. People who study different religions probably don’t realize that they are all worshiping the same god. But more than likely they are. God connects almost everyone, universally.
“Stupidity has a price. You should show more care and wisdom next.” This quote can be found on pg 179 Chapter 61.
This quote can be very true in some cases. If you do something stupid you could pay a high price. If you are smart and think about some of your decisions or actions before you do or say it then you either will not look stupid or will not be thought of as stupid. Some decisions that could be made you might regret later and life is too short to regret your stupid decisions. Some people make stupid decisions when they drive and when you are in a car you can’t make stupid decisions because it could come at too high of a price.
pg 55(44) Ch. 13
“When two creatures meet the one that is able to intimidate its opponent is recognized as socially superior, so that a social decision does not always depend on a fight; an encounter in some circumstances may be enough.”
Though this quote was not originally from Pi, it is quoted by him refereeing to circuses. In circuses they introduce the ringer leader first that way what ever animal that’s being introduced recognizes the ringer leader as the alpha male and itself as the omega animal. The ring leader cracks the whip, and the lion or tiger has no other option but to obey, for in the eyes of the omega animal, this is the ring leader territory and has to obey. Thus coming straight out of the cage the animal is intimidated, and therefore doesn’t strike back. In life it’s the same way, when two people encounter someone, whether it’d be faced to faced or from a distant, one will do things to intimidate the other, such as; yelling, glaring, snarling, making noises, or making obscene gestures, and the one who backs of the first is considered to be socially inferior. For instance, a guy walks up to a girl in a bowling alley, so does another one. They both walk up to the same girl, one of the guys will throw a look at the other, if he doesn’t budge the other one will send a message back and so on and so on, until one backs off. The person backing off is in avoidance and is intimidating by the other. However not always will intimidation prove to be self sufficient, as the quote say it does not always depend on a fight, but there are occasion where a fight will determine someone’s socially adequateness. To socially intimidate someone without a fight, takes the passive approach and makes you the superior one. (Denmark’s a Prison :p)
The blackness in my heart would stir and eventually go away, and God would remain, a shining point of my light in my heart. I would go on living. Chap 74; Pg 209
I believe the blackness in his heart came from his constant suffering on the boat. The torture the weather put him through, the loss of his family and friends and him having to be alone with a Bengal tiger. By him living out his days and having a will to survive his troubles would eventually fade away. Since he was a very religious person all he would really need is God in the end to survive. God would be his shining light through his dark times and would be there in the end. Pi knows that God will protect him and allow him to see him through his hard times as long as he stays faithful.
Chapter 99 page 297 "Love is hard to believe, ask any lover. Life is hard to believe, ask any scientist. God is hard to believe, ask any believer. What is your problem with hard to believe?" Pi is basically saying that he doesn’t care what the interviewers think because he knows what happened, he was the one that experienced it. Then Pi makes up a second story and to make his experience sound more real, so he uses real people instead of animals to please them. I think that this means that you have to believe in something no matter what you hear or think. Scientists don’t really know how things started; you just have to believe what it says in the Bible. Nobody has ever come into contact with God and been able to see him or talk to him face to face but people still have different religions. When you’re in love you can never fully describe what it feels like, and it always makes more sense in your head.
Ch.77 p.214
“A smile cracked my lips and made them bleed.”
I chose this quote because everybody goes a bad situation at some point in their life. And no matter how bad the situation; we always find enough energy to smile. This was also Pi’s situation; with him losing his main way out of poverty because of the sinking of the ship, and losing his family. After all of that he still found the will to survive, and even though finding food and fresh water was a drawn out task; he still had the determination to keep on trying and never gave up. I think we focus too much on negative things, and take the positive things for granted. All in all, were all human and with every bad situation there is a need to smile.

-Time is an illusion that only makes us pant.
Time is something that either taken for granted or goes being wasted. 60 seconds to a minute, 24 hours in a day, 365 days in a year and people still act the same. Time acts as an illusion to everyday situations, where it helps people see everything. As the saying goes “Only time will tell” is a good comparison. Time can tend to go our way one day, and then go wrong the next. It can be considered as a gift and surprises will be the outcome instead of expecting results. Being patient is the key to solving time illusion, although time is tricky it can lead to unluckily results.
Ch 74. Pg 208.
“Faith in God is an opening up, a letting go, a deep trust, a free act of love- but sometimes it was so hard to love.”
I believe this quote means that when you open up to God you are letting go of your past and every sin you’ve ever committed. Your basically starting over and beginning a new life. When you have faith in God you are able to learn and love everything about him and love everything about life and nature. The ending means that sometimes it may be hard to find God and have faith in him but he is there regardless of the hard times you are having. Sometimes you have your doubts but you know God’s always there to watch over you.

NEVER BREAK EYE CONTACT
oned thing that i realized when it came to respecting people and demanding respect it all starts with the eye contact. people who show upmost respect never break the eye co ntzct with a person especially when theire talking. I see iot as if you dnt have that eye contact with the person then you really not ,listening because where your eyes focus to your ears will follow. Thats why its very important to never break eye contact with a person that your trying to send a point across to or anything like that.g
"you might think I lost all hope at that point. I did."
Everyone has experienced a time when they just wanted to give up. Maybe they thought it was not worth it to try anymore or they just thought it was too hard. Pi experienced this in the early days of being on the lifeboat. He did not think life was even worth living anymore, especially living on a lifeboat with a 450 pound tiger. Just like Pi people experience the same kind of problem minus the tiger. They ask themselves is there really even a point anymore? The answer is yes. Everything in life is worth living for, even life itself. Most people are afraid of the outcome so they just give up and dont even try. The people that make it the furthest in life, not just financially but spiritually as well, are the ones that never give up hope and always finds something to live for
If your fear becomes a wordless darkness that you avoid, perhaps even manage to forget, you open yourself to further attacks of fear because you never truly fought the opponent who defeated you. Pg162
If you are to scared to face your fear as you come up on them and keep on putting them off until you eventually forget then you are causing yourself more fear when you are reminded of the very thing that you feared before. So if you were to just face your fears as you come upon them then you will not forget about them and you would not be worried having that fear anymore because they are pasted you, and it will be in the past.
"There is no place like home" pg 17.... To me this means that where you come from or where you grew up at no matter where you go or anything you will always remember where you come from. Being away from home is nothing like it. Its kind of like being home sick when you leave away for a long time you just dont feel the same. I picked this quote mainly because it reflects me alot. I cant stand not being away from home and the ones that i love. This is what this quote means to me
"If your fear becomes a wordless darkness that you avoid, perhaps even manage to forget, you open yourself to further attacks of fear because you never truly fought the opponent who defeated you." Pg162

Destine F. p2 chapter 78 pg 273 said.....
"When you look up you sometimes wonder if at the centre of a solar storm, if in the middle of tranquility. There isn't another one just like you looking up, also trapped by geometry also struggling with fear, rage, madness, hopelessness, apathy.
I think Yann Martel meant when he wrote this quote if other people just like yourself ever look up at the sky and wonder if someone else is going through the same thing that you are. If they also feel the rage and pain you may feel. If they ever just sit around and fear different things and how their life may turn out. Not everyone lives in a perfect world and things and accidents do sometime happen. So I think what he was wondering if anybody felt the way Pi felt when he was alone on this boat trapped with no where to go or no one to turn to. That feeling of hopelessness feeling that you get when you think things in your life can not get any better and are only making a turn for the worst that's what I think Yann Martel meant by saying this quote
Chap 25, pg. 71. “As If this small-mindedness did God any good. To me, religion is about our dignity, not our depravity”.
I think this quote is one of the many lessons that can be learned from The Life of Pi. This is an important quote that I think a lot of religions should listen to. To me this quote is saying that religion should be about celebrating and being proud. It should not be about anger and judgment. In the bible God does say not to judge others, this quote points out that this is small-mindedness and that along with judgment should have anything to do with God. Religion should not be corrupted by what a lot of people would call believing and supporting their faith. When really how some people act is not even close to how God wants us to. I believe that is what this quote points out.
The quote that I had was “I know my survival is hard to believe. When I think back, I can hardly believe it myself.” The Chapter 81 and page 223. What he really was talking about how he had survive in the middle of the Pacific Ocean in a lifeboat with a Bingel Tiger and his name was Richard Parker. He had to learn how to be independent on his own. And Pi had to learn his experience on the boat. For me I wouldn’t know what to if I was on the boat by myself on a boat with a tiger. It would be hard for me and the tiger for 227 days. I think I would have died already.
pg 17 "Go! You are free! Free as a bird! Go! Go!" -do you think they would shout and dance for joy? They Wouldn't. Birds are not free."
A lot of times when people are feeling free they say I'm as free as abird or they say I want to be free as a bird. When you really think about it birds are not free. Birds are tied to their instincts. Birds have to eat , drink, and even migrate at certain points in time. Birds are not free from predators either. They are often attacked by other animals. So, in reality us humans are as free or more free than birds because we don't have to migrate because certain weather. We also are able to do things just for fun that aren't tied into our instincts. We are the free ones not the birds.
The quote that I choose was “If God on the cross is God shamming a human tragedy, it turns the passion of Christ into the face of Christ” Its on page 68. To me this quote is basically defining what religion Pi really wants to be. He is starting to question is face and God. To me it means that Jesus on the cross was the face of all mankind and that he really walked this earth. To me Pi was really confused about the religion that he really wanted to be. That’s why he had so many questions dealing with faith and reality. I think Pi did not really know that God and Jesus are the same person. Jesus is God walking on earth in a human form. Pi is just confused and does not know what religion to be.
"The reason death sticks so closely to life isn't biological necessity-it's envy. Life is so beautiful that death has fallen in love with it, a jealous, possesive love that grabs at what it can. But life leaps over oblivion lightly, losing only a thing or two of no importance, and gloom is but the passing shadow of a cloud."
I chose this quote because I think that it's so true. Life is so great and wonderful that death is so envy of it but in the end life prevails over death and we even though we may lose some things in the process life always prevails over death. Like in the Life of Pi so many people died from the boat sinking and it was a tragedy but there was a survivor and that itself is a miracle. That was life revailing over death. I think that death put so many obstacles in Pi's way such as dehydration, thirst, and danger itself but he still had the will to survive and that's what saved him. He knew he wasn't done living his life. LIfe will always prevail over death no matter what happens. :)
Chapter 5; Page 25
“It is true that those we meet can change us, sometimes so profoundly that we are not the same afterwards, even unto our names.”
I think this quote is very true when it comes to life. I believe that people you met do change you and who you were before you knew them. People come and go in your life but they most likely have changed you in a good or bad way. Sometimes to the point where we are not the same person we were before we met them. I chose this quote because it reminded me of friends and people in my life that I know have changed me and the person that I have become. I think people remember how people have changed them once the person is gone from their life.
Chapter 94, page 360. “It’s important in life to conclude things properly. Only then can you let go. Otherwise you are left with words you should have said but never did, and your heart is heavy with remorse.”
I think this is a very strong and true quote about life. This quote can be easily compared to many peoples’ experiences in life with relationship to others such as family and friends. The meaning of this quote is that you should always end things properly with people that you care about. Like saying “I love you” to your parents before you leave to go to school. You never know when something might happen to them or someone you love and you’ll never get to see them again. Then you might be left with many things that you would have wanted them to know but instead you feel really bad for not saying what you should have said.
“You bring joy and pain in equal measure.” This quote means a lot to me. The quote has a lot to do with my life. I picked this quote because it relates to me the most out of the book. I can have joy and pain that measure up. When I was dating a boy for three years, he made me have pain every single day. My family and friends were always there to cheer me up at the end of the day though. I have been through a lot this year and I try to keep my head up during it all, because in the end it doesn’t matter what happens I’m still here and going strong.
The quote that I did was “Only fear can defeat life.” It is from page 161, chapter 56. To me this quote pretty much means that if you are afraid to do something or scared to do something you are not living or experiencing life to the fullest. Life is doing stuff and experiencing new things, doing activities & etc. You shouldn’t be scared of anything in life except death because that is denying you of living life, yet death doesn’t defeat life because it is a natural part of the life cycle & every living being experiences it, therefore leaving death as the only opponent to life. If you are scared to live life you to the fullest you are not living, you are waiting to die.
Suck my 4 inch
"Religion will save us." Chapter 7 page 27- This quote by Pi was very influential to me.The fact that he is knowledgeable about God and his wonderous works was what kept my interst in this book. In alot of ways, Pi and I are the same. Our families are both huge parts of our life, along with our religion.I believe that Pi became more of a christian than anything else towards the thicker ladder of the book. He could see God was helping him through his rough stages.Him asking for the prayer rug and to also be baptized was I think a huge step in him realizing Gods works.
"you must take life the way it comes at you and make the best of it." Meaning that you could have the worst life ever and it will never get better unless you make an effort to change. You have to take your life and make the best of what you have. Chances are that if your life is not great at all then it probaly is not going to get a whole lot better. So have fun with your life. Go out and do whatever makes you happy. Never let anyone tell you that you can't do something. Live life to the fullest. (Chapter 35: Page 115)
"But religion is more than right and ritual. There is what the right and ritual stand for." Pi is describing the sights, sounds, and smells of Hinduism. He then goes on to explain the fundamentals of the religion. He sees the world from the hindu perspective, but cautions against fundamentalism. This points out that Pi is not about the particulars of religion but about faith. He believes that he can believe in three different religions because thats what he believes. Pi is a very religious person and it shows that by him being a Hindu, Christian, and muslim. To most people this would seem outragious but its the fact that he can believe whatever he wants.
The sun distresses you like a crowd, a noisy, invasive crowd that makes you cup your ears, that makes you close your eyes, that makes you want to hide. P.216 Chp. 78
The sun its self is bright and beaming down like a crowd around you being loud and unending. Its stressful because you don’t want the attention, you feel the need to cover up and hide from the pressure and interruption of the sun. You close your eyes for the comfort of the darkness, and you put your hands over your ears to complete the shell or ball you made to block out the discomfort you feel from the heat. In life you block out stress through cutting off communication to the world. The best thing to do is embrace it, until the thriving distress breaks you down.
"Some of us give up hope with only a resigned sigh. Others fight a little then lose hope. Still others- and I am one of those- never give up." Pi Patel, Chapter 53 page 148
This is one of the most powerful quotes in the book to me. It gives the audience hope and strenth for both Pi and themselves. Its sort of a short lesson that screams don't be the one giving up with just a sigh. Be the one that fights for life and all it brings you. Life is the only true thing that you can only have one of. Cherish it. Once its gone you can not return to it unless the "Divine" rewards you with another. We all know that only two men recevied that reward.
This also reminds me of myself because i am one that refuses to give up on my goals. If i have my mind set on doing something I'm going to do so or die trying. I wish every single one of us in the world had the utter most ambition that Pi Patel had in life while he was on that boat. Maybe we wouldnt live with so much aggony and pain.
"If you take two steps towards God," he used to tell me,"God runs to you!" Ch.20 pg 61
This quote means to me that if you really and truly need god, that if you put the effort to go to him that you will not have to go all the way to him. That as long I believe in god and make the first steps to him he will always have my back and provide for me. Make a way out of no way. That if I make the steps to him and faith that he has everything in control that he will take everything in his hands. God is waiting on me to come to him to take my leap of faith
"We fight no matter the cost of battle, the losses we take, the improbability of success" Chapter 53 page 148..
I believe that this is a one of the more important quotes throughout the book because it's very true and it applys to everyone regardless of what they plan to become in life. Being successful is a job and it's also seen as a battle. Meaning that a person will do and should so whatever it takes to be successful. The road to success isn't something that's easy or "smooth sailing" it's a job within a job that requires a lot of hard work. So by all means, try your hardest, don't let anyone stop you, and continue in the battle to become successful!

The “life of pi” is a tale that will make you believe in God. In the opening sections of the book, Pi has himself resolved this issue on his personal level and sees no contradiction in defining himself as a Muslim, a Hindu and a Christian simultaneously. Pi’s Muslim teacher is stated as being a follower of the Sufi path. Pi is a believer in the fullest sense of the word, he uses his rational intellect to take him as far as he can go and then he takes imaginative leaps. As Pi himself tells the two Japanese officials who interview him in Mexico, many things are difficult to believe, but we convince ourselves to do so nonetheless: “Love is hard to believe, ask any lover. Life is hard to believe, ask any scientist. God is hard to believe, ask any believer.” We give ourselves to these fictions on reality, because they give us a reason to keep going. Where is the joy in a life if there is no romance and passion? Where is the self-awareness in a life that is merely a biological accident? A life that is entirely rational or fact based is almost not worth living. To Pi, and to anyone who believes in things that he cannot necessarily see nor prove, faith is a bridge between the coldness of fact and the warmth of emotion.

"Why do people move? What makes uproot and leave everything they've known for a great unknown beyond the horizon? Why climb this Mount Everest of formalities that makes you feel like a beggar? Why enter this jungle of foreigness where everything is new, strange, and different? The answer is the same the world over: people move in hope of a better life." Chapter 29, page 77
To me, this quote stands out more than any other in the entire book because at some point in our lives we have felt the same way. You wind up in a new neighborhood or school and you often get the outcast treatment, often because you don't see eye to eye with everyone on everything or sometimes for no good reason. You even being to question whether the change will help at all. But after you manage to find common ground with those that pay no attention, you get a sense that this is where you belong and everthing will be all right.
"Time is an illusion that only makes us pant." Chapter 63, page 242
This quote holds very true for me. Time is a constant thing that is on a person's mind. Whether it is the time we have to do something, the time we are counting down for something, or the time we spend with someone. We often take time for granted because it is an "illusion" like Pi said, we always say that we will get to things later. Although, will there always be a later? We never know when our time will come so we need to take advantage of the time we are given. Don't let time be an illusion and live your life to the fullest.
Fear.
"You must fight hard to shine the light of words upon it. Because if you don't, if your fear becomes a wordless darkness that you avoid, perhaps even manage to forget, you open yourself to further attacks of fear because you never truly fought the opponent who defeated you." Basically what this excerpt from Life of Pi(Chapter 56, Pg 204) is stating is that when you let fear in your mind, it defeats you. It defeats you by affecting your thoughts, actions, and even your will to live. Fear can take over your life and run it for you. He closes the quote with saying that you open yourself to more affliction because you didn't rid of the core cause. This could be compared to cancer spreading, if you don't attack it at it's source then it is just going to keep on growing. Fear is something the human race has battled since the beginning of time and will continue to do so until until the end of time. It's inevitable, but it's also something you can fix.

" Only fear can defeat life." chapter 56, pg.161
Causing living in fear isn't living at all. If you live your life in fear you'll never accomplish the difficult things in life. Looking fear in the eyes and never backing down is one of the great challenges in life. By doing this you can acheive every goal you set in life. By letting fear take over you are giving up on life. Fear is something that everyone must overcome during their life time, by lying down and letting fear defeat you. You're letting fear win but overcoming fear is what it takes to live life to the fullest. Life pwns fear!
Chapter 53 page 148
"We fight no matter the cost of battle, the losses we take, the improbability of success"
This quotes means to me that I'll do whatever it takes to win, no matter what sacrifices that I have make are. Even if some sacrifices cause me to lose in the short term as long if I win in the long run. No great battle has ever been won with out sarcifices. It how I look at life now, no matter the losts that I have to take now. The out come always seem to be great in the end. Just like my years in football, we took are loses but knowing one day we would have the chance to be the one winning. We spend the hours in the weight room and on the field getting stronger and faster. Then senoir year come and we started to win. All the scarifices paid off.
Ch. 35 Pg. 91-“You must take life the way it comes at you and make the best of it”
I believe this quote means that, things happen in life that neither you nor can anyone stop. And the fact is most of the time you must push through it, no matter it be horrible or enjoyable. If you’re thrown a lump of coal, you need to do your best to make a diamond out of it. Make it better for you so that your life can be enjoyable. What happened to pi was horrible, yet he still pushed through so that one day it would be somewhat better. And by pushing through he survived.
"Life on a lifeboat isn’t much of a life. It is like an end game in chess, a game with few pieces. The elements couldn’t be more simple, nor the stakes higher." page 217 chapter 63
i chose this quote because i believe it means that even if im in a hopeless situation, if i have the will to live, that hopeless situation can turn into a hopeful one. if i play the game right then i'll be okay. In the game chess, if you have a few pieces left, don't give up, anything could happen. what i'm trying 2 say is if something seems impossible make it possible and don't give up. This quote stand out to me because its a good metaphor and i understand it. pi was on a life boat for 227 days, he didn't give up and had the will to live for 227 days. if he gave up he wouldn't live that long. I will remember this quote and i will try to not give up on something important.
