How do literary devices make writing and reading more interesting? What can they add to a reading experience? What are your favorite devices to write with; what are your favorite devices to read?
When Pi Patel cooks spicy Indian food for Yann Martel: "Each time it's the same: my taste buds shrivel up and die, my skin goes beet red, my eyes well up with tears, my head feels like a house on fire, and my digestive tract starts to twist and groan in agony like a boa constrictor that has swallowed a lawn mower" (42-43).
This is a tiger of the Sundarbans region of Bangladesh. Breath-taking.

Literary devices make writing interesting by painting pictures with the words the aurthor chooses. Writing is an art just like painting or drawing is. Pictures use colors or shapes to stimulate the mind, following suit, writers use words and literary devices to bring their works alive in our minds. Literary devices take an idea, and expand it. It's much like when a painter uses a brighter color or a different painting technique to emphisize a point in a picture, it expands on that idea. When Pi observes the ocean, Yann could've just called it the ocean, added that it was blue and wavy, and been done. Rather, he says, "The sea briefly imitated every land feature- every hill, every valley, every plain. Accelerated geotectonicts. Around the world in eighty swells."(110) There are three literary devices in this one excerpt: personification, imagery, and an allusion to the book "Around the World in eighty Days". This is why this book and books like it are so successful, they reach out to your senses, and it is easy to believe the novel is real, and you are there watching it live.
Brilliant, Jason! Now that's scholarly, my man. Thank you for your acumen.
Literary devices are a way to add depth to a novel... They turn it from being a story, a plain story, wtih a plain plot, into a text based movie. With the thousands of literary devices thrown into this one book, the descriptions are so vivid you can perfectly imagine the hell Pi is going through, and his thoughts the whole way. Because of literary devices, authors can convey the thoughts of characters, as well as build the overall depth of a character much more than the cinema can. My favorite literary devices invoke symbolism within them, adding another level to the book, making it even more engaging.
literary devices help make reading easier becuase they make it interesting. with out them the stories would be painfully dull. i do not if you could write a story without literary devices. the devices get you interested and keep you interested. the best one i think that get your interest the most are similes. their are so many possibilities to use and they all make the reading better. they get you thinking. yann martel uses similes very well, he has tons of them all through out his book. i think that is why this might be the first book i actually read cover to cover.
This boa and lawn mower simile has stuck with me since I first read this book in 2002. I think devices help us remember so much better because they create a reading experience rather than a reading chore .
Life of Pi is filled with literary devices that is why this novel is intresting. Yann Martel grabs the intrest of the reading by adding metapors, symbolism, irony, and similis. The reseaon he does that is so the reader is aware of what is going on and thus likly to keep reading because of all the literary devices. Other people might not agree with that but as a reader I would rather read a novel that keeps you searching for these devises than a book that is boring and dull (1984). This book definitely has an effect on me. One moment ill feel like crying and the next all be laughing out loud. The literary devises I like to read is black humor and similes. On page 70 chapter 24 Yann write's about Ravi's reaction to Pi's religous choises. Something that we shouldn't laugh at but is funny "Have you found time yet to get the end of your pecker cut off and become a Jew?"
The use of literary devices makes reading fascinating. Without these devices it would be a monotone story. Even with them a story may be monotone because of the way that they are used. It is always more enjoyable to read stories that have some sort of voice that reaches out to you. Everything needs a little spice in life and that is what literary devices are used for in writing.
They add the personal experiences to writings. Many of them allow the reader to picture what is going on, though there are some that do not allow the mind to explore since it is there in full detail. It is still up to the reader to picture it in their minds eye. These are what allow you to experience what is happening to the main characters. You are able to put your self in to the book and learn all the more.
I enjoy reading imagery, metaphors, symbolism, allusion (if I know the one that is being referred to), and allegory. These are also the ones that seem easy to write with also. This is because most of the other literary devices go hand in hand with them. It is as though you don’t get one with out the other.
Hilarious, Po! So glad to have found a book that you can care about and enjoy.
Haley has found 48 devices! She's right: they are the "spice" of the literary dish.
I find literary devices another form of a visual aide. It helps the read better understand what they are reading. I know that with out these devices that reading would become very boring and hard to understand. They give the reader an upper hand at what they are reading.
Literary devices make reading something easier. You can understands things better when they are compared to something like similies and metaphors. They take something you may not know and compare it to something that you are more familiar with. Literary devices can help set a scene for you also. Help you think about the end of the book and what things forshadowed the end. These devices add to the context and bring something more to the book then just plain words that anyone can figure out quickly.
I like literary devices in the stories I read because they paint a mental picture of what something looks like and it makes the story more interesting. My favorite kind of litary device would have to be personification because I like how they give animals human like traits and vice versa. I also like simile and metaphores to because they make the story interesting and help me relate parts of the book to other things I have experienced.
Literary Devices help illustrate what the reader wants our minds to visualize. They help draw us into the book how we want to be drawn in, we can take the devices and the desriptions and become imaginative with the words the writer has provided. It also helps us understand the tone and the mood of the book, when something needs to be emphasized we can truly feel what is happening because of the devices.
big, descriptive words can only go so far until the average reader gets bored, but throw in simlies, metaphors, some syntax, a little humor and some rhyming, and we can't wait to flip to page and continue reading. This book is not a very "edge of your seat" sort of page turner, but yet i just can't seem to put it down. and I think it because the way he uses these devices keeps me interested, which is pretty taleted considering if you just think of the book, its about a boy whos father owns a zoo in India, wants to move it to Canda, the ship sinks, and the rest of the book is him on a ship with a tiger, but Patel makes it so much more!
Literary devices bring more life and character to a book. It adds 'jazz' i guess you could say. It spices up what you have read and makes it better than just saying "I hate spicy food, it makes me sick". On page 42-43, the metaphor makes me feel like I can feel the pain that he goes through when he eats spicy food. I can start to feel my insides twist inside, just as he describes.
Literary devices make reading more interesting, they help you understand, relate, and feel what the characters are feeling. With out them, writings would be really bored, and bland.
literary devices add to reading..it gives you a picture to what you are reading. you need literary devices to add to what you are reading. it keeps you interested in the book or story. they add color and image to your reading experience and you get to see the book in a totally different way. i like to read simile and methaphors in the books i read. it makes you think of how thinks could be like other things.
It is easy to read. Reading is not what makes it difficult to some. It is reading analytically and understanding the material, even sometimes with hidden alegories or things that may be hard to catch. Although sometimes it is hard to understand every literary device in a book, they also can act as a helper to understand a novel more thouroughly.
literary devices really put images and feelings into the readers mind, and makes them feel like they are a part of the book.
Similies are easiest to find, and usually one of the easiest to write. Yann uses a lot of similies throughout the book, but he uses so many others to create excitement, imagery, and emotion. Without literary devices, reading would be boring
Literary devices are used to keep the reader interested. They allow the reader to get lost in the book and relate to the book. Whenever I read I know it is a good book when I feel as if I have left reality and am living the in the main characters body. With literary devices this is all possible. My all time favorite device to read is imagery. It allows to me picture the scene and get lost in the scene.
literary devices are essential to good stories. However the devices themselves must be clever or they come off as corny. Yann Martel uses them extremely well. I love how by using things like personification he can make the animals actions more realistic. That concept doesn't make sense, i mean how can giving an animal human characteristics possibly make it seem more real? It is very confusing but as we have all found out, it works very well. As for some of the other devices such as similies and metaphors... it would be very hard to describe something without them. We constantly use literary devices we just don't think about it, it is second nature. But now that we are studying them we understand the effect and importance they have in telling stories.
literary devices make a reading much more colorful and imaginative. Imagery, for example, allows a person to be able to picture in their mind what a character looks like or what a scene might look like. Similes and metaphors help us make comparisons and make it easier to relate certain things. Our minds are like coloring books when we begin a novel and the literary devices are like the crayons, markers, and colored pencils that help make our pictures more interesting and colorful. (simile haha)
literay devices make stories more interesting to read. Similes and metaphors help you make comparisons and image more clearly what the author is trying to say in his writings. My favorite devices to write with would be similes and allusions. if you can make an allusion and your reader understands it you and the reader are making a closer connection and they feel like they know you better.
When looking for literary devices in Life of Pi, it become very interesting. I read more carefully when looking for these items, and I learn to notice them. Similes, I think, are the easiest to find. They are easy to point out and compare.
Literary devices makes the book/stories more intersting. It helps me reaslize what is going on and it is easier to picture. My favorites are similes. Probably cuz they are easier to find and understand!
Literary Devices make reading more vivid and colorful to the imagination. They provide us w/ a mental picture of what is going on w/in the novel. I personally like to write using similes and metaphors; I like how the comparisons are sometimes overexaggerated, and they always seem to get the point across of what is being described.
Literary Devices save you from have a book at the same level through out the entire book. Like have a teacher or speaker have a monotone voice. They take the book to another level, like they bring a book alive. Adds more color to life. When you find a book that boring you dont read it as fast you get though it, but it takes forever. When a book have literary device after another you cant put it down, when i find a book like that i take it every wear. Even if i know i probably wont get a chance to read it, it still get put in my purse just in case.
Nice simile, Danielle: book without literary devices = teacher who speaks in monotone. I'll remember that next time I'm telling you about an author, book, or literary era!
Literary devices make a book worth reading. By comparing things that we know with things that may be foriegn to us gives us a general idea of what they are talking about.
Martel using similes helps me imagine the scene better. It helps if you don't know what he is talking about but he compares the image to something that you could imagine. There are alot of similes i have noticed in the book. Literacy devices make a story interesting.
Period 1
Literary devices spice up the book by giving you a visual in word form. Life of Pi is filled with literary devices and maybe thats why I enjoy this one. Similies are probably the most common for me to find because all you look for is like or as. But, all in all similies paint a picture that you can paint in your head and makes the book more exciting.
literary devices make reading more interesting because they make it more realistic and appeal to your life. Imagery really brings the story to life and makes it seem more real. My favoirite devices to read are imagery and personification. It makes it fun to see how the athor describes things and to really see the story rather than just reading it.
I think literary devices make a novel more entertaining. When you can compare parts of the novel to everyday things, it really makes you think. Without these devices i dont think novels would be very good. Life of Pi is such a good book because there are literary devices all over in the book. The devices make you realize things that you never would have if they were not said. Also these devices can create a picture in your head, instead of just reading and not imagining what you just read.
p.1
I think that literay devices make writing and reading more interesting because they help stimulate the senses and mind more. Having a certain idea in the book compare to another idea that happens in real life helps the reader understand the concept better, and also helps them pain a mental picture better of the idea that is being presented. My favorite devices to read are personification, similes, imagery, and metaphors because all of them help me understand what's going on better.
Without literary devices in books we would not be interested it. We could not imagine images in our heads. We woudn't be able to taste the foods when they are described in the book or even smell scents Pi describe. Without similies or metaphors we woudn't be able to have any comparrison to things and the books would be so plain. Mostly every sentence has a literary device in it if we truely look at it. WIthout these devices we wouldn't have any dialougue. The characters would have no interaction and we can all imagine how boring that would be.
Literary devices help you imagine and visualize what is really happening in the book. They can help you see all the colors, feel what they are touching and even smell the ocean.
Nice post... Looks like solid state memory is finally beginning to become more popular. Hopefully we'll start seeing decreasing SSD prices in the near future. 5 dollar 32 gig SDs for your DS flash card... imagine that!

"Time is an illusion that only makes us pant."
I think this goes tries to tell us to not worry about time in our lives so much that it sickens us. The world revolves around time and worrying if you'll be on time, or when your prom dress will be in. And while your wondering about the time, your stressing inside. If we took the time a day to slow down and quit rushing through our lives as we do stressing about time and everything that revolves around you and what goes on in that category. I believe we would find ourselves more at piece in our self.
