I enjoy this writing because, for one, it gives you great ideas on the side of what a compare-contrast essay should have which is a huge pointer for people writing their own essay. They use logos quite a bit, stating facts that are interesting and different from common knowledge. The logos shows you that this author is not only interested in the topic but also draws you in with reliable facts. This use of logos also helps the person to trust you, ethos. The author does not immediately start bombarding you with facts either. They slowly ease into it, helping the reader feel comfortable and trusting. To me the fact that this author made the essay a little less structured and formal, adding in their own thoughts and conclusions of things they had just covered made me feel more comfortable and trusting as well. This also allows the reader to see into the authors minds and get a sense of how the author feels. This is a great way to add in pathos. When the author talks about whales being hunted simply for their oil and what the effect was on all whales definitely pulls on some people's heartstrings. Making them feel connected to the story and care more about what the essay has to offer and say; another great use of pathos. The author uses stories, dates, times, facts, and statistics to show how much they know about everything they are telling us. They make it seem as if they know exactly what they are talking about, they are the leading expert on these whales. They use ethos perfectly. They also use large and exact words to convey feeling, "Gentle Giants" is one of the many that I can name. The use of this saying helps me to imagine these large whales happily swimming without a care in the world. The paragraph of hunting them follows after this saying, putting the reader into a more distressed feeling on hunting the "Gentle Giants" . All in all they use logos, ethos, and pathos perfectly and even if you don't care about whales, you will find yourself reading this essay simply for how interesting the author makes the facts and essay.

http://abcnews.go.com/US/wireStory/wake-ferguson-police-build-trust-25139754
Compare and Contrast the accountability of police men before and after the events of Ferguson.
Ethos: The journalists, Nomaan Mercant and Jim Salter appear to be very intelligent with their vocabulary use in this article and I typically have an automatic respect for those who are able to put together an article that has color, flair, and life. Which they have.
Pathos: For the emotional section of this article, the journalists pull quotes from interviewees that have personal conviction towards their stories subject. The policemen are the ones with the strongest conviction, being that people are now less likely to trust them because of the aftermath of the events at Ferguson. This distrust can hurt their lives and their jobs in turn effecting everything around them. However, the police shooting of a boy causes others to be convicted, simply because they are angry. The journalists pulled quotes from both sides of the story, making the comparison more reliable as well as more trustworthy.
Logos: Logical in this comparison style story is that the journalists use information that supports both sides of the claim. It tells about how before the events at Ferguson not many people were that concerned with the police, however after the events they are so concerned that they are protesting. The article gives light to both before and after, as well as the opinions of both the concerned and the accused.
To sum up this article: Police in Ferguson as well as Dallas, Texas are struggling to gain trust from the people they risk their lives to protect. In the events of Ferguson a civilian was shot and killed and this is what has set off the chain of events leading to the ultimate distrust of all in blue uniform. The police are vying to gain trust back by doing anything that they can, such as replacing guns with tasers as an alternative way to sedate an attacker or a run away convict.
You watch beighcbolle on television, but you play cawphtbolle with your buddies. That is the opinion of one Lubby Juggins (that cannot be a real name), the composer of the essay at this page: http://grammar.about.com/od/developingessays/a/BaseballSoftball.htm. I liked reading this essay for a lot of reasons. It is about something for which I have a passion – baseball – and it persuasively proves its point that the precise game of baseball and the considerably sloppier game of baseball are a lot like real life. The essay also uses the ideas of ethos, logos, and pathos very well in persuading the reader. Its use of ethos stems from the author’s various references to him playing softball both when he was younger and at the time the essay was written. He also cites a few things that make me believe he is an avid baseball fan, such as the detailed description of the game and its precision and the references to Major League Baseball teams (“Giants--and Pirates and Tigers and Braves”) and great, powerful sluggers on the 2004 Boston Red Sox (“Manny, Big Papi and Johnny D”). The author uses pathos in his essay by saying that sure, baseball and softball may just be stupid games to some people, but that is why they love it so much. Finally, Juggins uses logos by stating the facts. He notes that baseball is more precise than softball, and gives an expressive, accurate description of each game. He uses these facts to compare the precision of baseball and the sloppiness of softball to what people dream life is like and what life really is like. All in all, I think this essay is very interesting, and the comparisons Juggins makes between the games and life are pretty accurate. I am glad I read it, and I encourage other baseball fans to read it as well.

http://danceathletes.weebly.com/dancevssports.html
The article I chose to read was comparing and contrasting sports that are accepted as sports, and dance, which is not accepted as a sport. I enjoyed reading this article because I can connect to it very easily from my many years of dance. This article discusses the author’s disapproval of how dance is looked upon. Many people look at dance and would classify it as an extracurricular activity. Although, it is much more than that—dance is very well classified as a sport. In this article, she (the author) explains how a group of male football players, who thought dance was nothing except an activity done for fun, partake in a ballet class. Ballet is a very difficult form of dance and it is also the basics. Being football players, they found it very hard and after had a much larger respect for dance as a sport. They began to recognize how ballet training delivered real benefits. Using turnout to rotate the legs from the hips improves the strength in much smaller muscle areas which are more susceptible to injuries specifically what are called the “smile muscles”. “Smile muscles” are located beneath the gluteus and around the pelvis. These muscles are very hard to strengthen by working in parallel positions; therefore, working on turn out in ballet helped the players strengthen muscles that had never been worked on before. By practicing ballet, the players became much more flexible not only in large muscles but in small. The flexibility in their ankles and feet also increased therefore when it reached game time their agility had increased dramatically. Throughout the article I found the use of many logos, ethos, and pathos. The logos and the logic of the article are great. The author does an incredible job using logic to explain herself. She shares many great points that increase the clarity of her claim. The ethos, which refer to the credibility of the article, was also very evident. Multiple times throughout the article the author used citations. There is also a whole page of citations that was used to create the article which gives me the ability to put trust into her work. Pathos, or the emotional side of things is found within the article as well. When reading, I could tell she was upset at the fact that dance was not considered a sport. She did a great job emotionally explaining herself. I could easily understand her values and beliefs of the sport and where it should stand among other sports. Also, she used great vivid language that helped her out on the pathos within her article.

http://academichelp.net/samples/essays/compare-contrast/forward-or-defender-position.html
This piece of writing chose to compare and contrast a forward or defender: which soccer position contributes more to a win. In this writing they have stated two items that have similarities and differences. The first sentence really catches your attention by explaining why soccer is such a fascinating sport. The author states what two things are being compared and contrasted right away, therefore the reader knows this is a comparison and contrast article.
Ethos: The author seems to know a lot about the game of soccer. He or she states that soccer is a team game and that one player cannot score without the help from his or her teammates. I can relate to this article and author because I play soccer and understand exactly what the author is trying to get across to the reader.
Pathos: The author appealed to my emotions by using certain words. He or she uses the words danger, failed, small, slip, not to forgive, fast counter-attack, and cover for the forward. To me these words instill emotions that are important in the game of soccer. These words are the emotions you feel when you play. The author gets inside the mind of the player by using these words. The pathos relates to the ethos in this article because the reader can tell that the writer does have knowledge of the game.
Logos: The author states the obvious a lot in this article. He or she says, “It is no secret that forward players are commonly the most popular names in the world of soccer, and are also usually sold to clubs at a much higher rate than players in any other position.” The author is persuading the reader by the use of reasoning and logic. The writer tells about the roles of both sides. He or she is not choosing to persuade the reader one way or another. The author is stating that the forward and defender “could not work effectively without each other.”

http://www.foxnews.com/tech/2011/09/30/comparing-apples-and-fire-ipad-vs-kindle/
For my Blogtask, I researched a comparison and contrasting article about the differences and similarities between the iPad and the Kindle fire. Most of the information was very broad and would be known to anyone who had ever used both devices. The logos within this article were the facts that were used. They are all logical and contain no information that could not be proved. The article was opinion based, yes, however it contained many facts like the difference in size of the screens and the point that the Amazon Kindle does not have 3G ability. The Ethos throughout this article was that there was no slander about one device or another. Facts were presented to make one item seem more attractive to buy than the other, that being the iPad 2. The opinion that this article was based off of was based only on facts. The author never stated that they thought that the iPad was better because of the age old argument: because it is an iPad. They researched thoroughly and based their opinion on ethical facts, examples being the two that I listed before. The Pathos are because of the emotional connection that we as a society understand and value technology. We, as a developed country, always are looking for the “Next Big Thing” and are always comparing and contrasting products in order to find the fastest, brightest, easiest to use gadget that it available on the market. The amount of necessity that we as a society put on our technology gives us a need for articles like this. Many people contemplating on whether or not to buy a tablet at all may stumble across this article, and it will put them one step closer to their purchase, and as a culture, we admire that. In other words, we want to know all aspects of whatever we are looking to purchase.

The writer of the essay entitled “Cows and Whales” does not originate from this country, but rather Japan. The author does have several hiccups within his language but all the same, he is learning the language still. English seems like a simple language to learn, but to an outsider, a nightmare is is more applicable.
As far as the Logos, Ethos, and Pathos go, the “Cows and Whales” (http://eslbee.com/contrast_cows_and_whales.htm)piece is of a more difficult side to consider. The Ethos, or ethical appeal, is somewhat laborious to comprehend. As the author is not from the United States, different cultural and ethical standards exist. Absolutely do some standards remain similar, moreover, some, as Americans, we just fail to fathom. Pathos, the reader’s emotions, are drawn in by the story. The reader is told of the separate lives that both animals lead. One happens to be very popular on the dinner table, but the other lives under safety of international law. The emotion of slaughtering cows to us is nonexistent, but we react differently to the killing of whale populations. The Logos, or comparison by reasoning is used by the author to convey that cows and whales indeed to lead different lives. Most cows are in fences not by water and whales are in oceans. Both are food, but we think of them as different because the situation in which they died is different.
Other essays from the same website are from the same website are “Contrast Between Backpacking or Staying in Hotels” (http://eslbee.com/contrast_backpacking_or_staying_in_hotels.htm). The Ethos, Logos, and Pathos of this essay make very similar impacts to the reader as “Cows and Whales.” This one however details just the simplicity and a more laid back attitude. There is no set attitude, nor sad stories of comparisons from whales and cows. The thought though is simple, which is better, backpacking, or staying a hotel? The Logos for this essay are simply stated. The message is clear, what is better, hotels or backpacking? Even though the statement is reiterated several times, the author in this case works to get a point across.
I found this simple, lovely essay about the differences between a concert band and an orchestra. Having experience in both of these settings, this article stood out to me. The author focuses on three points - each group’s repertoire, instruments, and goals. He carefully compares each in a logical way that kept my attention until the last line.
Also known as credibility, ethos refers to how trustworthy the author is. This author links different aspects in both settings to each other. By doing so, he convinces me that he understands these atmospheres and can successfully write about both. Pathos, on the other hand, relates to the emotional draw the essay has on its audience. The word choice in this writing is precise. By being direct, the author kept my attention throughout the whole piece. Additionally, I found this article on a website for teens, thus meaning the author is a teenager who loves to talk about music. I find this humorous because it is just like me. Reading about his intrigue in the field of music helped keep my interest in his writing until the end because it was something I could relate to. Finally, logos is the logicality of a piece of literature. This article is organized and structured well. He has a solid introduction and thesis statement as the final line of the first paragraph. His first paragraph explains how concert band is more modern, thus performing more modern-day music. His second paragraph tells how orchestras play much older music because their repertoire is from hundreds of years ago. He also explains in the preceding paragraphs about the differences and similarities between the instruments of each musical group and that both groups’ goal is to connect with the audience musically. He concluded with a fabulous conclusion that summed up the main points of the essay.

Comparing high school and college very relevant. I found that this essay pertained to me very well as I will be going to college soon. I enjoyed reading this because it was very interesting to read and kept me hooked. It also gave me a few good ideas and ways to break the content down into different categories. Logos are used in writing to persuade people with reasoning by staying logical. This essay had a good example of that because the writer persuaded the reader that college was much harder than high school and the fact that high school is not voluntary while college is. He was not over the top about how hard either of them is. Ethos is the credibility of the author. It hard to tell if the author has any experience with either of these topics because there is no documentation of it. However, it is safe to assume that the author more than likely at least graduated high school because the vocabulary level of this essay is one of high level writing Pathos is to persuade the reader with emotions. I feel as if the author did an okay job when it comes to this. He wrote about the physical aspects a lot more rather than the emotional ones. For example he states that overall college costs more and he goes on to talk about that more than the emotional toll school has on people. In his defense he was pretty emotional when it comes to stating the differences between the two. Overall I feel that this essay was written will using a few good literary devices.

http://www.wisegeek.com/what-is-the-difference-between-a-frog-and-a-toad.htm
I found a particular article online that compares and contrasts frogs and toads. This topic interests me because I use to own both as pets when I was a child. Although they look very similar, there are many different characteristics that separate the two amphibians. Frogs and toads share many things that could confuse the average person. Frogs and toads are found everywhere around the world but often prefer different habitats. Frogs are often found in a moist environment that contains a lot of water. Unlike frogs, toads are often found in dry areas that do not get a lot of rain. Frogs have webbed feet because they need the ability to swim. You will often see frogs near a pond or slough. A toad has stubby feet because they take small hops and usually avoid water. Frogs usually have thicker skin which has a darker color. Frogs usually have a lighter skin tone.
The physical characteristics of a toad are very different than a frog. A toad has a stubby body and its legs are much shorter than a frog. Frogs usually have elongated legs and a leaner body. You can differentiate the two amphibians by their eyes. A frog will always have protruding eyes, while the toad's eyes are often small and do not protrude.
Everybody know the myth that you can get warts from toads. This myth was based off the appearance of the animal. Toads have extremely bumpy skin and is often considered to look warty. A frogs texture is usually smooth and slimy. Unlike toads, frogs usually feel slimy because they release mucus. The major difference between the two animals are their teeth and snout. A toad does not have any teeth, but the frog does! The snout of a frog tends to be longer than a toad. Despite these differences, frogs and toads share similar diets including insects, grubs, snails, and very small fish.
Frogs and toads defend themselves in different ways. The toad has poison sacs behind their eyes. Frogs expose poison through their skin instead of sacs. Bright colors on a frog will warn a near predator that the frog is not safe to eat.
Although frogs and toads are very different, they share many similar characteristics. These two amphibians will often hop around to avoid predators. Both animals prefer habitats that best camouflages their skin. Both of these animals have arched backs and four legs. These two animals are very similar, yet different in many ways!

http://www.nydailynews.com/opinion/donald-sterling-ray-rice-compare-contrast-article-1.1887635
This article does a great job of comparing and contrasting two men involved in sports, each with a negative reputation. Both men were punished for their ills, one more than the other, justly? Ray Rice, running back for the Baltimore Ravens in the NFL, was charged for domestic violence against his wife. He struck her to the ground, then told everyone he was sorry. This article is 45 days before the release of the video, showing Rice striking his wife. Donald Sterling, former owner of the Los Angeles Clippers, made racist comments to his girlfriend while being recorded. Sterling received hatred from all over the United States, from celebrities to the masses. He was given a lifetime ban from the NBA and a tattered reputation. Why was Sterling punished so harshly for an opinion, while Rice was given a slap on the wrist for assault? I feel the author does a good job of getting his point across. He clearly feels that Rice was let off easy, whereas Sterling was punished to the full extent possible.
The author establishes Logos by confidently persuading his viewpoint by presenting facts, not opinions. He explains what each man did, and the repercussions of such. He then talks about the reactions that the nation had towards each man, asking if they were just. Jonathan Zimmerman knew what he was talking about.
Zimmerman also uses Pathos effectively to sway the reader towards his desired viewpoint. He makes the audience feel guilty of sorts, because they embrace a wife beater while they hate a man who holds an opinion that many others may hold as well. Well both men were wrong, Zimmerman pulls a bit more on the strings of the audiences’ hearts on the matter of domestic abuse, leading them to feel that Ray Rice is worser than Donald Sterling.
Finally, Ethos is used often by Zimmerman to relay his message. He states that the nation obviously is against racial prejudice, now they must learn not to favor those who are performing domestic violence against their spouses. Ray Rice was praised as he entered team camp, little time after all the ruckus of his actions died down. The author follows this information with a paragraph about the problems of domestic abuse, allowing the reader to realize why Rice should be seen in a bad light.

https://sites.google.com/site/xevanxbrownx/Home/a-p-e-n-g-l-i-s-h-/compare--contrast/todays-fashion-to-the-roaring-20s-fashion-redo
I found this essay interesting because it compares and contrasts the fashion changes from the 20’s after World War 1, to the styles and looks of today. Fashion is something that I have always been interested in, and it has been something I have found very appealing. It is quite amazing to see the transformations of clothing throughout history. I always find it amazing how much this generations style differs now compared to our grandparents or even our parents style when they were our age. To see what they would have worn back in the day to school or out to a party compared to what we wear now is completely different. Back in the 1920’s, or also called “The Roaring Twenties”, fashion had completely changed. Before then, men and especially women were defined to one look. No one had the guts to break the barrier of what is known as the fashion code, but after the war, society started to open up to new fashions, hairstyles, and makeup. Brighter colors were being used, hair and skirts were becoming shorter and shorter, and the author states that even a more masculine look for women was taking over. I guess looking like a flattened piece of wood with short hair was in. Style these days is completely different from then. The author states that only a few fashion statements and trends were in back then, but now there are an abundant amount of fashion friezes and crazes. No one is defined to one look anymore. Everyone can have their own look and can add their own personal touches to a style that is considered “in”. Everyone is free to express who they are or who they would like to be just like they started to do back in the 1920’s. The author does a great job of using ethos, pathos, and logos in this writing. The logos, which is the logic, are used quite a bit in this explanatory writing. The author uses multiple facts and claims that support what this writing is all about. It really seemed is if the author really knew what he was talking about. The ethos, which are the credibility, was used also. At the bottom of the essay, you can see the many references used to make this document as accurate as it could be. These references are used so that the author can get a clear picture of this topic from more than one person or site, and so that he can help the readers have a full understanding of what is being read. Pathos, also known as the emotional part of an essay, is found as well. You can tell that the author was really into what was being written, explained, and defined. It may not have been the most emotional essay to have ever been written, but it was full of facts and details that are quite interesting.

http://www.antiessays.com/free-essays/Baseball-Vs-Softball-336382.html
Baseball vs. Softball—they have many comparisons yet are very different at the same time. Both sports have the same end all goal—Hit the ball far, run, and then keep turning left until you return to the same place where you hit it. Both sports have the same amount of players on the field. They both have the same number of bases. They actually share quite a bit of similarities in fact. However the game has many differences as well. This is including: base distance, ball size, grass on the infield for baseball and dirt for softball, girls play with medal bats, and boys play with wooden bats. There are also obvious differences like boys play baseball and girls play softball.
The Logos (logical) in this essay is built up by the author continuing to throw out statistics and facts about softball and baseball. This helps the reader believe that the author knows what he is talking about even if he doesn’t. This is due to his “facts” that he could have just looked online.
This essay is lacking the Pathos (Emotional) aspect of it a little bit. The author does a good job talking directly to the reader which makes them feel involved. This encourages them to continue reading to learn more about a topic they can’t really relate with or don’t care about. But besides this there isn’t much else in this essay that is really emotional.
The Ethos (credibility) in this essay is tied pretty closely with the logos in this essay. The author never states who he truly is—if he is a coach or player or not? So we are unaware how credible he is. However, he does state a lot of facts and statistics so that makes him sound pretty credible.

This article discussed some of the benefits of holistic medicine over conventional medicine. Ethos is credibility, and this is established immediately simply by looking at the article. There is a short biography of the author in a column and shows him to be an accredited family physician who has been in practice for many years. Pathos is the emotional factor. This is shown in the first part of the article, where it talks about unconditional love being life's powerful healer. This is one of the fundamental beliefs in holistic medicine. Logos is persuading by reasoning. This is used when the facts, treatment options, and statistics are laid out for both holistic and conventional medicine, showing that there are many benefits and drawbacks to both. Logically we should reason that the one with more benefits and less drawbacks is the better form of medicine.

http://www.carsdirect.com/car-buying/should-i-buy-a-foreign-or-an-american-car
I read an interesting article comparing and contrasting the advantages and disadvantages of buying Foreign or American made cars. This topic was interesting to me because I have always had a love for cars and the argument over which type of car is better is always a juicy one to step into. The article tested vehicles on four major topics; Quality, Styling, Price and Fuel Economy. After the test were conducted, the author wrote a short summary and explained which type of car he thought was better for a person to own and drive. Overall he said that it didn’t matter what the title of the car was. He said the best car to buy was the one that fitted your lifestyle and needs the most.
Three common terms used to describe comparison and contrasting essays are Logos, Ethos, and Pathos. Logos are the common goals of argumentative papers. The goal in an argumentative essay is to persuade the reader to a certain side of the argument. In this article of persuading the reader on which car to buy, neither side really won. The author told the reader that the best policy to follow was your stomach. This means that when it comes to car buying you need to base your decision on which car fits your wants and needs the best. Ethos are the author or articles credibility. It is hard to persuade a reader if you don’t have any credibility in the subject you are trying to be persuasive about. This article was credible because the research was conducted by a professional company, named Cars Direct, which takes commonly asked automobile questions, puts them to the test, and finds a result for the general public to use in their car buying decision. Pathos are the emotional part of the persuasive tool. Pathos are used to connect a reader emotionally with whatever topic they are reading about. This article connected emotionally with the reader because it can impact a major money transaction or even investment opportunity in someone’s life. Buying a car is a big financial step in a person’s life so they would want to make sure it is a good, sound decision.

http://www.foxnews.com/slideshow/travel/2011/09/05/7-ways-air-travel-changed-after-11/#slide=1
This article compares and contrasts the level of airport security before and after the events that occurred on September 11th, 2001. I was interested in this article because I am 1) passionate about all things aviation related, and 2) this was an emotional time for many Americans. I was curious to see what was done as a result of this tragedy.
We tend to respect, or at least listen to, those people who work for the press. The ethos, or the credibility, of this article is that the Associated Press from Fox News was the entity that authored it; we as a nation tend to rely on the press for credible information, therefore this article would be taken as bring credible due to its nature. Also, 9/11 was an extremely well known event; not only the United States, but also the majority of the world heard about the tragic events with the Twin Towers and the other two aircraft. Since this occurrence is so well known, there is heightened credibility, or ethos.
Being about 9/11, this article strongly appeals to people’s emotions, especially Americans’. 9/11 is something that a large number of people were affected by, and it was certainly a tragic event. This article would appeal to those people who were involved because they would be interested to see what had been done to prevent something like the September 11th attacks from happening again. This is the pathos, or emotional attachment behind the article.
The logos, or logical reasoning, behind this article is that security changed for a strong purpose. As a result of the events that occurred on 9/11, certain security measures were put into place by the nation so that there would not be a repeat. Airports had to become standardized, the Transportation Security Administration was born, and many restrictions were placed upon passengers of commercial airlines. Logic was clearly the motivator behind the occurrence of the security measures.
In summary, ethos was created by the widespread awareness of the events that happened on 9/11 and by the credibility of the source. Pathos was inherently added to this article because of its subject—an extremely tragic event that affected many people. Finally, the logos of this article was the logic behind the security put into place as a result of 9/11.

Large Leap
http://www.humber.ca/liberalarts/sites/default/files/COMPARE%20AND%20CONTRAST%20ESSAY.pdf
This essay entitled “Large Leap” centered around the transition between high school and college along with the challenges that such a drastic change presents. It showed similarities between the high school and college experiences while highlighting some key differences that make each venture distinctly unique. The three uses of Ethos, Logos, and Pathos were all present. Some were just used more intensely due to the subject matter of the essay itself.
The author’s use of Ethos was very noticeable throughout this essay. The repetitive use of confidently presented statistical examples makes the reader feel as though the author commands intellectual authority and expertise over this issue. The author cites an immediate and glaringly obvious difference between high school and post-secondary education as being one of economical expenditures--money. The author goes on to state the cost of many different aspects of university life including annual tuition, residences fees, and learning expenditures (such as textbooks). Although the author’s informed nature about the differing economic costs of high school and college takes a very logical stance, I believe that it lends credibility to the author as someone who we can trust with the dissemination of such information.
The author also commands authority over the usage of Logos. As was previously stated, the author assumes a very logical method of going about explaining the distinctions between high school and college life. I believe that this logic most evidently comes to fruition when she explains the similarities and differences between each institution’s respective and expected workloads. The author explains that although workload in high school generally increases as the years go on, there is a dramatic shift in the amount of work that you are expected to complete once you adjust into a university setting. The author explains that work ethic is exposed through the increased workload of college life. A student becomes inundated with shock when they realize that the time it usually took them to complete all of their high school coursework, was devoted to only one college assignment. Even with the incredulity of such a statement, the author commands the information with logical poise and confidence.
The area least emphasized is Pathos. The reason for this could quite possibly be that the subject matter is not as emotionally impacting as other more affecting topics. The best example of Ethos in this essay is when the author is highlighting the differences between both high school and college social scenes. The author says that no matter who you are there is essentially a virtual guarantee that you will find a club or social sphere fitting to you. This is based in the wider variation of the collegiate student body’s cultural heritage and interests. To the reader, this is the point in the essay where emotions are drawn upon. The feeling of inclusion and acceptance is displayed which simultaneously makes the reader feel more internally invested and intrigued towards the larger topic.

In summary of a very interesting essay I read, "Material And Non-Material Factors of Happiness", the essay is a comparison and contrast essay between material and non-material factors for happiness. The author goes on to state that happiness is the most common value adding complement to an item; he states that happiness can drive the price over 10 times as much as the production cost. The author believes that material and non-material goods can both bring happiness, however, he also says that the happiness that is achieved with the material good is temporary while non-material goods have a more permanent effect on a person. He contrasts material goods and non-material goods by stating that the rate at which you attain or lose either is different. He states that material goods are easily gained, but easily lost as well, whereas non-material goods are harder to receive, but they are near impossible to lose. The author is fairly persuasive through ethos. He visits a few different opinions on the subject as well as references different people such as Jean Baudrillard, a French philosopher who believed an item is not defined by the price of a product, but the symbolically added value. The logos, or the logical reasoning, is seen through his use of speaking about how society currently is. He talks about how we do enjoy materialistic goods and then turn around saying that non-material factors are what truly matter. He then goes on to state that material goods can obviously make our lives easier. The pathos, or the emotional reasoning, is seen through the author trying to connect with the reader. He tries to connect with our emotional state of mind when talking about symbols and how we price them, which impacts the cost of an item. He goes on to conclude that we would be foolish to try and connect our happiness to material goods.

http://academichelp.net/samples/essays/compare-contrast/cognitive-behavioral-therapy.html
In this comparison-contrast essay, I read about two different counselling approaches; the Client-Centered, and Cognitive Behavioral Therapy. In the essay, the described that Client-Centered Therapy is when the client speaks and the counselor listens and does not interrupt. Cognitive Behavioral Therapy is when the counselor is constantly asking the client questions and making interruptions. One difference that the writer mentions is that Client-Centered therapy may take longer because the therapist has to encourage the client to open and they have to remain neutral and sincere. The Cognitive Behavioral Therapy is said to take a shorter amount of time because the therapist is challenging the client and creating a active conversation. The writer did a good job with their use of ethos, pathos and logos. From the beginning you gain a respect for the author and thus giving the essay a good ethos. They speak with an in-depth knowledge that makes you sure that they know what they are talking about and took the time to make everything correct. They used pathos to create a light tone and stayed consistent throughout the essay so to not pick a side. The essay is especially full of logos in the sense that is full of logic. They look in-depth at how involved the therapist is with a positive outcome and how much it is reliant on the patient using their logic to talk about everything and to come to their own conclusion. They supported their thesis throughout their essay by pointing out the differences and also their effectiveness. The writer also use logic when they are describing the types of therapies and how they are used and what you gain from each of the different approaches. They reason that every therapist should be equipped to use each approach at any point depending on what is needed for each patient.

In this example of comparison-contrast writing, the author compares and contrasts two restaurants in a town in Tennessee, McDonalds and Fox’s Diner. McDonalds is a franchise while Fox’s Diner is a small town restaurant. I thought the author did a very good job of being descriptive about both restaurants and highlighting all of their differences.
Logos is the logic, facts, and statistics used to support a claim or argument. In this example essay, the author gave facts about both places, such as the organization and how much technology each place uses. Everyone knows about McDonalds, so the author was able to spend less time explaining what it looked like and simply point out the similarities and differences between it and Fox’s Diner. It is a fact that their color schemes are different and they are located in different parts of the town. It is also a fact that Fox’s Diner has a jukebox while McDonalds plays the country music station on the television.
Pathos is the emotion and sensory details in the work. Throughout the essay, the author describes the feeling a customer gets walking into one of these restaurants. A little bit biased, the author made it appear that he preferred Fox’s Diner over McDonalds. Many detailed descriptions were used for both restaurants, even the type of music playing at each. While Fox’s Diner is more old fashioned and classic, McDonalds is ever-changing and up to date.
Finally, ethos is the source’s credibility or authority. The author of this piece talks about the owner of Fox’s Diner running it since before the author was born. This alludes to the fact that the author grew up in this town and had plenty of time to observe the differences between them. There is also no question in the author’s wording. He uses authority and gives descriptions as facts.

This essay that I found really helps me get the jist of what a comparison and contrast essay should be like. It interested me, because I love sports especially basketball and have always wondered if Michael would have been good in this era or not. The essay is about is Michael Jordan would have starred in todays NBA world or not. If he would have been able to compete with the or better than the Lebron Jame’s and the Kobe’s of this era. The essay starts off by using Logos to state the obvious about the game of basketball, like back then they used a ball, played for the same amount of time, and had five men on the court at a time. He then goes on to use a lot of Ethos. I say this because the author seems to know a lot about the sport of basketball back then and even now. He knows about how different the playing styles were, how different the defense was and how physical the game was then and now. He talks about how different the plays were then and now and all the different rules that have been changed, added, and taken away. The Pathos part of the essay comes when he is talking about the difficulties Michael had to face back then and how hard it was for him to compete back then compared to today. He talks about how physical and enduring it would have been on him and it makes the reader sympathize, yet become excited by how good Michael must have really been. Making us wish we could have watched him in person. In all, this essay helped me see how to compare and contrast certain parts of my essay and how to use Ethos, Pathos, and Logos for my benefit in my essay.

The piece of writing I choose to read about was the differences and similarities between The Senate and The House of Representatives. I choose to read this article, because I do not know much about government and I am in government class right now. The author of this writing did a good job of explaining the differences between the Senate and the House of Representatives. The author explained how many people were in the Senate and then he explained how many people were in the House of Representatives the next sentence, so you could see the differences. Also, the author explained similarities by giving facts, such as how they are both made up of men and women, and how they both have the same goal. The one thing that this essay was lacking, was something in the essay to keep the writing interesting.
Ethos- The author seems to know the government very well. He starts off the essay by talking about the three branches of government and where the Senate and the House of Representatives fit into the government. The writer makes the reader believe that his essay is very credible.
Pathos- This essay is lacking pathos, because it did not appeal to my emotions. There was nothing in the writing that gave me an emotional response. The essay was mainly facts and it did not connect to the reader.
Logos- This essay has very clear intentions, to explain to the reader the differences and similarities between the Senate and the House of Representatives. It does a good job of using logos, because it gives the reader many facts about the Senate and the House of Representatives. It does not try to persuade you to like one more than the other, and it does not convince you that one is better than the other.

http://3arabkom.blogspot.com/2013/07/compare-and-contrast-essay-high-school.html
This assignment seemed to have helped me figure out the transition between college and high school. It was not just this essay that I read but all the other ones that helped too. There are many contrasting points with very few comparisons between high school and college. The author states many of the mental differences of high school to college such as not really caring about the drama that once existed in our high school lives. The biggest change will be physical aspects. Instead of a standard schedule where you go to school for seven hours a day, you might expect three to five hour days with classes but you will have to study for a few hours a day. In high school you could expect homework about everyday. In college you might have a lot of readings but your final grade might be considered with a few tests.
Pathos-I could feel an emotional part about this essay. At the end, he says how he would not want to go back to high school because of the drama and mandatory attendance. He likes the freedom it has to offer. He also states he likes how college makes you think critically and how if you want to succeed in college, you will have to attend classes through ambition and hard work.
Ethos-Even though I have never met this guy, I could feel I respected him. His beliefs were very similar to mine. He believed hard work and ambition will get you somewhere. He also believed that the biggest difference between college and high school students is the maturity level. I can already tell a maturity level from freshmen to seniors in high school.
Logos-The author used many logical facts for both sides. He presented both sides evenly for you to decide which one you think is better. He compared them and he also contrasted them

This article was about the differences in taking a vacation on the beach or in the city. I found it interesting because I have vacationed in both places. I thought at first that I would think the beach is the best but they both have their pros. Taking many vacations to many different places has taught me that both are enjoyable. The city is busy but has a lot of cultural aspects where the beach is so relaxing. You can find calming places at both but the city is more difficult because of the amount of people in a city. At the beach it is so big and spacious. Another difference is the amount of clothing you need to bring. At a beach you can handle with just a swimming suit, shorts, and short-sleeved shirts. When you go a city you need more walking attire and fancy clothes for plays or nice restaurants.. It could be unpredictable at both places but that is just a chance you have to take. I personally enjoy the cities more. Oddly I can not stand a lot of people but I need to be moving and have different things to catch my mind. Sitting at a beach all day gets old fast for me. This author uses ethos because what she says makes sense and seems real. It is logical. The author also uses logos because she uses logical reasons. In the end, this article is a start but definitely needs more reasons. Each vacation is different and someone’s dream could be another person’s nightmare. I enjoy plays and stores so the city is the best for me but my mom on the other hand does not like a lot of people. She would be happy with a relaxing beach. It is not all about the place either. It has to do with who you go with. The beach pleases a crowd more relax and not on a schedule ,whereas, the city needs planning and patience for a crowd or things changing.

http://eslbee.com/contrast_eating_fresh_or_canned_foods.htm
In this essay sample, the author is comparing canned food to fresh food. While reading the essay you get the feeling that the author is more of a fresh food person than and canned food person. The author states the health benefits of the fresh vegetables over the negatives of the canned vegetables. The feeling that the reader gets for the authors opinion is called ethos. Ethos shows us the authors personal opinion. The author also uses another term called logos in the beginning to help the reader understand the differences between canned and fresh by stating the facts of both. The logos is the firm proof that one item is better than another; not opinion based. Some of the facts about the canned food was that it is not as healthy as fresh food. The canned food loses nutrients and flavor over time, so in order to fix this problem the canners have to add coloring and preservatives to try and keep the food to appear in a normal state. In contrast the fresh food is all natural, and full of nutrients. Next term that the author implies is, pathos. Pathos is the way an audience reacts. This can sometimes be altered by the ethos of the author. If the author promotes an object, your reaction will usually be in favor of the object, but if the author talks negatively about the object you will not be prone to like it either. The author definitely uses pathos in the essay by talking about how bad canned food is. The power of pathos helps us to determine what we like and do not like. I now feel very informed about the comparison of canned food to fresh food after reading this example essay. The author did a great job using the terms, pathos, ethos, and logos to teach and inform readers about canned food in comparison to fresh food.

This article was about comparing and contacting reptiles and amphibians. The article uses pathos. It appealed to my emotions and interests in many ways. I personally found the article very interesting because I love reptiles and love learning about them. In fact, I have pet lizard. The article also taught me multiple facts about frogs. The article used logos. It is basically made up of facts. The article had a few facts that everybody generally knew about reptiles and amphibians, but it also had a few comparisons that some people might not have even thought about. The article also has Ethos. I feel that it is a trusted site. I have read a few articles in the past from this site. Just to make sure the site is not a bunch of junk, I read through the “about wiseGEEK” and learned that the site is made by researchers, writers, and editors. They should be qualified to talk about their subjects… especially about something as simple as comparing reptiles to amphibians.

http://eslbee.com/contrast_vacation_beach_or_city.htm
The author in this essay compares and contrasts two types of vacations. The two types are either going to a big city for vacation or going to the beach. The biggest difference between the two is the pace of the two places. When you go to a beach it will be very relaxing and calm while if you go to a city, you will be doing a variety of activities on a schedule.
The ethos is the credibility and the authority of the author. In this essay, you can tell that the author has been on both types of vacations because he knows multiple differences. He also knows that both vacations will be interesting and exciting. He knows that if you are looking for a peaceful vacation you should not go to a big city and if you are looking to do adventurous new things you should not go to the beach.
The logos is the logic to support the claim. In this comparison-contrast essay, he used explicit details. He said what activities you will be doing on each vacation type and even what type of clothes you would need to bring. He also gives details on what equipment you will need to bring on the two different types of vacations.
The pathos is the motivational and emotional connections the author has to their essay. For the vacation essay, the author gets into detail on how relaxed you would be on a beach vacation. In the city, he says that you will have a great time because you will always be busy doing different activities. He can relate to these things because he has done them before and it probably brings back memories of when he was on these vacations. He is emotionally attached to his writing because he can connect to it.

This essay compares Michael Jordan to Lebron James and the feats they have accomplished. This essay helped me picture a way in which I could set up my own personal essay. The author used ethos to show us his opinion on the topic. He seemed to know his basketball and provide accurate information over the topic. In this essay, the author favors Michael as being the overall greatest of all time. With his stats and championships its hard not to. Lebron is a physical specimen that nobody is like. He is a incredible basketball player. This is the pathos kicking in. Pathos are the way the reader reacts influenced by the ethos. He gives his personal beliefs in a way that draws the audience in and keeps their attention while maybe even persuading them towards his side. The pathos for me is that I have bought Jordan being the greatest overall after seeing stats and what he accomplished. The logos or facts in this essay were evident as well. It clearly states the two career numbers. They are almost equal so those end up being towards a toss up. The way he describes the two athletes makes you chose one or the other. Do you chose the high flying Lebron or the court dominator Jordan? After seeing them, I wish I could have seen Jordan play in person instead of just highlights. The way the author of the article makes the reader believe Jordan could do whatever he wanted on the court is evident. He clearly states Jordan is more famous because of the clothing line and the championships. Between the two it certainly is a toss up. The logos, pathos, and ethos are used for other NBA greats such as Wilt and Bill Russel. Maybe they are considered the greatest. The author ends up on Jordan's side but proves willing and believable evidence toward the others like the 100 point game and what not.

http://www.studymode.com/essays/Compare-And-Contrast-High-School-Vs-717794.html
As a young woman transitioning from the adolescent girl in high school, to the responsible lady going into highschool, I have many questions. Some of these retain to the differences I am going to face. The scale of these differences varies anywhere from a miniscule difference, all the way to the region I live in. The essay I reviewed was a piece of writing explaining the most notable differences between high school and college. They compared the attitudes of students and teaches, the rules, and the amount of work expected.
In the explanation of this topic, the part that struck me most was the attitudes of the students. Although they are given the freedom of whether or not to attend class, most become more studious than ever before. The work gets done in a timely manner, and with minimal problems. They use pathos here in ways that made me feel like I need to start working harder in order to be prepared. After this, the author went on to talk about the rules of college. In college, the students are allowed to eat in class, and even use their cell phones. At this point in the essay, they used the the mean of persuasion known as ethos. They used this by naming some examples of rules that actually apply in college. The last thing mentioned in this compare and contrast essay was the amount of work put in by the students and teachers. In college, all are considered adults, which makes it logical that they are treated like one. The author uses logos, or logic on this one. They state that since the transition happened, college attendees are expected to do things without the push that high schoolers need. This article has really opened my eyes and helped me see some of the more obvious differences that still may come as a surprise. From what I read, I realized that everyone has to learn these lessons on their own.

I chose this article to read because it was a topic that I enjoy and often find myself comparing. The article compares the NBA to the WNBA, which can become a bit of a controversial topic to some. But when it comes to Ethos, or the credibility of the writing, with this article I would say it is a mostly opinion based piece of writing with a few facts holding the arguer's point of view up. It is hard to find a completely unbiased writing on this topic solely due to the fact of what is at stake when comparing the two. There was one section where the article talked about funding for the leagues, both for teams and for players that I found to be very interesting and correct. The Pathos is the way the writer appeals to the reader, and in the writing is much the same to the Ethos- when you read the article you can tell how the writer feels on the topic. But in this case I don’t mind, because I actually enjoy reading how others feel about this topic and I hope i can do the same with my essay. Also the author was really good about keeping the reader’s attention during the article, making it interesting, and leaving you wanting to read more. This writings Logos was quite clear. Logos is the overall message and it’s “logical appeal”. When you're writing a topic like this one you must be careful to stick to the facts and not let your personal beliefs sway the direction of your writing. In this particular writing, the writer was simply stating what they thought of the two leagues and how they differed. Which is okay too! They backed it up with facts and kept the essay rolling. The writer had the same attitude all the way through and made their point very clear, something I hope to convey in my writing.

Freshman Year Vs. Senior Year
http://archbishopryanreview.com/355/opinion/freshman-year-vs-senior-year/
This essay on the Ryan Review explains the difference between a freshman high school student and a senior high school student. I was really interested in this article because high school is a big part of growing up and has helped me mature into the person I am today. I remember how scared I was the first day of my freshman year, compared to how comfortable I am now with my school and fellow classmates. I am interested to write about this topic and reflect on how high school can change someone and help them grow.
Logos, Ethos and Pathos are three terms that are used to describe comparison and contrast essays. “Logos” is a term that means persuasion with the use of reasoning. “Ethos” generally means convincing the reader through the author’s character. “Pathos” means persuading by appealing to the reader’s emotions.
The logo used in this essay is used by persuading the reader how exciting becoming a senior really is. In High school, seniors have so many more advantages than the freshman because they are respected more by their teachers and have gained their trust from them. Being a senior basically just feels so much better because you know that you’re almost done with high school and almost off to college.
The Ethos in this essay is the author’s personal experience in high school. The author has obviously had their own high school experience so they know how high school works. They also used quotes from current freshman and their experiences they had on the first day of school.
The pathos is used in this essay because the people reading it have most likely gone through high school, or are currently in high school while reading it. We all know how high school is and how much it can change a person throughout the four years; from freshman to senior year.

http://eslbee.com/contrast_eating_fresh_or_canned_foods.htm
The article I have chosen, called "Eating Fresh Foods or Canned Foods," compares and contrasts two different meal choices. In this essay, the author takes into consideration differing flavors, costs, and prices. I chose this essay because nearly everyone is able to relate to these two different types of foods. Also, recently, there has been much debate about healthy eating. While reading the essay, I noted that the author utilized all of Aristotle's appeals: ethos, pathos, and logos.
To begin with, the author seems knowledgeable about their topic. The essay is easy to read, yet still very sophisticated and scholarly. This allows for the reader to become connected with the author and to also gain respect for the author. Also, the writer does not degrade either one of the choices. By keeping an open-mind, they may easily gain the audiences interest and respect. By doing this, the author is using an ethos, or credibility, appeal.
The second appeal is pathos. This persuades people by using their emotions. While people do not generally become emotional over canned foods or fresh foods, the writer found a different way to appeal to the readers emotions. The author suggests the health effects that each type of food may present. Often times, people are afraid of the health issues certain foods may cause. This will persuade many people when making choices about their daily meals.
Lastly, the writer exercised logos within their essay. They did this effectively by stating facts about the similarities and differences of canned foods and fresh foods. Since logos appeals to the reader through logic and reasoning, the author stated a variety of facts about their topic to show the scientific facts about each of the different types of cuisines. For example, the writer states that "It is logical that the fresh foods will have a greater taste and flavor when consumed just because of the time in which they have been prepared." This shows how the writer is trying to appeal to the readers logic and show them the differences between the two food types.
In conclusion, this comparison and contrast essay as effective because of its use of ethos, pathos, and logos. Also, it was interesting to read. This topic is heavily debated over the differing health benefits of each food. However, the author did a good job stating their main points and not becoming muddled in the small health details. Not only was this essay interesting, but it was also a wonderful example of a comparison and contrast essay and I hope that my essay will utilize these same persuasive tools in such an effective way.

“Differences Between Football and Basketball”
The Article I chose described the many differences between the sports Basketball and Football. When thinking of 2 of the most physical sports in the United States, it’s sometimes difficult to notice some of the many differences. Upon further inspection, its quite evident that there are almost complete opposites! In Basketball, the only way to move about the playing field, or basketball court, is by dribbling. Dribbling is repeatedly throwing the basketball on the floor whereas in football this would be considered a fumble which would most often result in a turnover. The Author uses somewhat of a comedic approach which therefore makes the essay all the more interesting. Ethos, describes the credibility of an author. People are much more inclined to agree with an argument if the composer is credible. In this case, the author was a blogger from the college of Kentucky. Therefore, people will most likely not take into account his ethical appeal. Pathos describes the emotional appeal. Being as this was a very straight-forward essay, there was little of this but some from his comedic approach. By invoking comedy, he allows the reader to evoke happy emotions which makes for a more delightful essay. “Basketball players compete mostly unarmored, where football players have enough gear on to impress a medieval knight.” This is a prime example of his humor in the essay. Logos, stemming from the word logic, gives an essay more credibility if its logical. In this essay, he used logos minimally, but it was still used. For example, he put together logical reasoning of the opposites of the sports. Logos was used when describing the differences such as how Basketball is played at preferable conditions, where in Football you are still on the field even if it is very cold. Unfortunately, I didn’t find any similarities within his essay which could’ve made it more enjoyable to see both sides of the equation.

Did you know that in 2012 ford sold around 214,222 vehicles in December alone? Following that Toyota sold 178,131 vehicles in 2012 in the month of December. If you were to go around your house do you believe that the majority of your belongings would not be made in America. If you own a ford car there is one item to add to that list. Toyota cars are made across the ocean in a complete different country, along with almost every other object in your house.
Ethos: Ethos otherwise know as credibility, which I believe Ford has shown there have rarely been accidents involving manufacture mistakes. The Ford car is solid it doesn't bring up any questions and is a credible motor company to ensure your confidence in. Toyota is a foreign company, now I am not saying that Toyota is bad, but they have had vehicular problems due to manufacturing mistakes.
Pathos: Pathos also know as emotional, is connected by the car itself. If one was to get into a car accident when driving a Toyota due to the brakes not working. Lives could be lost due to the fact that the car wasn't working the way it was supposed to and then getting sued for that reason. Do you have an emotional attachment to your car? It might seem kind of weird but some people have emotional attachments to their cars. Joyful events could have happened to them in their car or really bad events like getting into an accident or getting a speeding ticket and then not wanting to drive that car anymore.
Logos: Logic and reasoning isn't the way everyone thinks. Some people have quick impulses and other people take a long time to make decisions. When choosing a car, logic and reason come into play. A person wants a attractive, safe car. They want things a, certain way and they need to have heated seats or a nice radio, otherwise they will not be purchasing anything from that company.

http://www.foxnews.com/tech/2011/09/30/comparing-apples-and-fire-ipad-vs-kindle/
In this article, the author is comparing and contrasting the IPad 2 and the Kindle Fire tablet. On this topic, it does not seem like the author has a preference to one or the other gadgets. The author doesn’t start right off using technology terms, she starts with the cost. The author uses techniques like ethos, pathos, and logos to help persuade the audience. A pathos is an appeal to emotion to persuade the reader. An example of a pathos in this essay is when the author appeals to laughter. She uses puns about the Amazon tablet killing the Apple with its new release, Fire. Other than that, there are no other appeals to emotion. There isn’t much use of ethos in this essay. Ethos is an appeal to ethics, and tries to convince someone of the character or credibility of the persuader. The only time the author mentions herself is when she is stating which one she would buy; the IPad 2. We don’t know from the article how reliable this author is because she doesn’t try to claim to be all-knowing. Logos, an appeal to logic, are used throughout the whole argument. She gives the reader a breakdown of the capabilities of both tablets. An example would be how the Fire has only 8 gigabytes of storage while the IPad has 16GB of storage. She goes on to compare the screen sizes, battery life, wifi, and other apps these can have. This essay persuades the audience by using reason and logic before buying a new tablet. After reading the essay, I would say that the Ipad 2 definitely sounds like a better tablet but the Fire is much cheaper and is used purely for entertainment. The author persuaded me to the Ipad’s side by using the hard facts of the differences between the two gadgets.

In this essay example, the author is comparing orchestra to band. I was interested in this topic because I enjoy both band and orchestra. In this essay, the author focuses on three main points of music- repertoire, instruments, and their goals. The most contrasting part between band and orchestra is the repertoire. Unlike the modern concert bands, many orchestras play music dating much further back in history than band music. Concert bands tend to play more modern, fresh music straying away from the old, overplayed music. According to the article, another difference between a band and an orchestra is the instruments involved. Orchestras are known for string instruments such as the violin which tend to be sharp in sound. Bands are known for their woodwinds and brass sections which date all the way back to armies in battle. The last point the author brings up is goals. Band and orchestra both have different goals but both always have the same goal to create emotion to a person through their interpretation of a piece of music.
Three things the author uses in this article are ethos, pathos, and logos. Logos are the facts and statistics used to support a claim. The author's great use of the logos in this article clearly shows me that the author precisely knows what he is talking about. The author sets up the article with an intriguing thesis statement and continues to build upon that thesis until the very end of the article. He states credible facts to compare and contrast the difference between an orchestra and a band. The author seems very knowledgeable about these topics. Ethos is the ethical appeal or the source's credibility. I believe the author knew what he was talking about. I didn’t, for one minute, believe any of it wasn’t true. He keeps the reader wanting more with his word choice. Lastly, pathos is the emotions and vivid details. I believe this article lacks in this category. It simply informs the reader of facts rather than tugging at our emotions.

There are many ways to persuade someone. The three most common, and most utilized, happen to be logos, ethos, and pathos. Each different type of persuasion plays on a different human trait. For example, logos is the appeal to a higher logic. It simply means that, because “x” situation is more logical than “y” situation, “x” situation is better. Ethos, on the other hand, is the appeal to emotion. The notion follows that because “a” situation evokes happiness, and “b” situation provokes anger, “a” situation is a more pleasing outcome. Finally, pathos appeals to humans larger sense of authority. According to pathos, which ever outcome best pleases your superiors is the best outcome of all. However, that doesn’t mean that each one of these can’t be twisted to work for many, both good and bad, bodies of thought.
This sample essay uses logos, ethos, and pathos in many different ways. For example, logos is the use of the reader’s own logic capabilities as a persuasion tactic. The sample essay does this by stating that children will no longer have a single classroom, and as such, need lockers, a “welcome rite of passage.” This appeal to the logical question of “Where will the children store their supplies?” is answered with lockers, and concluded with the statement that many kids want lockers, making it seem like middle school is a better place, filled with things students need and want. The essay appeals to ethos in stating that the transition from elementary to middle school is scary, but it is completely necessary, and will eventually become fun. The essay appeals to pathos by stating that the kids will now have many new teachers, each one an expert on their own field, allowing the students to learn from the best.

http://www.holsmanpt.com/physical-therapy-clifton-nj/the-difference-between-physical-therapy-and-occupational-therapy.html
I decided to choose an article that explains the similarities and differences between Physical and Occupational Therapy. This article is of great interest to me because I am interning with Physical Therapists this semester. A Physical Therapist works to improve alignment, decrease pain, and increase function of the body in every patient. An Occupational Therapist, on the other hand, works to improve daily activities such as cooking, getting dressed, and writing. Both Physical and Occupational Therapists work in a variety of settings such as hospitals, nursing homes, and schools. The two types of therapists often collaborate together when they are working with the same patient so that the patient can receive the most effective treatment.
The author uses logos throughout the whole essay by explaining the exact areas of the body that each type of therapist treats. He also gives examples of the different kinds of activities that a patient will be able to perform after seeing both a Physical and an Occupational Therapist. The entire article is very easy to understand and the author is consistent with his claims about each type of therapist. The author uses ethos by explaining the difference between a licensed Physical Therapist and a licensed Physical Therapist Assistant. He also includes the particular branches of Physical Therapy that a therapist may specialize in. On the Occupational Therapy side, the author gives examples of different adaptive equipment that the therapist may recommend for his or her patients. The article itself is from a specific clinic that specializes in Physical Therapy and Rehabilitation which shows that the article is a credible source. The article did seem to be lacking pathos because it is meant to be an informational article. The author does not wish to appeal to the reader’s emotional side. The main purpose of the article is to explain each profession and the differences between each so a person can decide if Physical or Occupational Therapy would be beneficial to them.

I chose an essay called “Elementary School and Middle School: The Differences and Similarities.” Although this essay is a sample paper in a Times For Kids addition, I believe it’s simplicity was very helpful when analyzing a Comparison-Contrast essay type. Also, the author did a great job in using the components of Ethos, Pathos, and Logos within the writing example. I found the essay credible in relation to Ethos, the ethical appeal, due to the author stating right away that they had experienced the transition from elementary school to middle school himself. Knowing this fact helps create a trust for the reader and allows them to believe that what the author is going to say in the following statements is accurate. “Having experienced both, I can tell you that there are plenty of similarities as well as some very big differences from the two types of schools.” is an exact citation from this essay showing how the author used Ethos. As well as using Ethos appropriately, the author did a fine job with the use of Pathos, the emotional appeal when writing. The writer presented multiple examples to explain why elementary school is both similar and different to middle school and why the transitioner shouldn’t be afraid. This allowed for an emotional comfort and understanding. A direct example from the sample paper states “Making the move from elementary school to middle may seem scary, but knowing what to expect can really help.” Lastly, along with this their use of Logos, the reasoning and logical components of writing, was used appropriately as well. Due to the preciseness and clarity of the essay it would easily be understood by the younger audience the author is trying to reach. In addition to this, the author used various illustrations when both comparing and contrasting making the writing rational. An example of their use of Logos includes the following statement; “Typically, both are open five days a week for a set number of hours each day.” The list of similarities and comparisons to help support this remark continue in the essay.

http://www.eslbee.com/contrast_industrial_engineer_and_administrator.htm
Although this piece is very short, it contains correct information and is still thorough in explanation. The author uses ethos very well. They know exactly what they are talking about when it comes to comparing and contrasting getting a job in engineering to getting a job in administration. Examples include ideas such as what previous knowledge will be needed to take into each career. For example, the author explains that the engineer can have a wide plethora of jobs to go to, but the administrator will always have a "specialized" job to remain with. Another example is of which classes they will have to go through, such as math and physics for engineering, and the understanding of economics for administration.
In my opinion, the essay fully lacks in the use of pathos. There is not a way for the reader that is not interested in either of these careers to fully want to keep reading after the first paragraph. There is no “picture language” as I call it, and it is very plain. It is not inviting to the eye. There is no connection, emotions, or pounding energy, thus failing to completely persuade me to be fully engaged in reading it (although I happen to like the reading anyway).
As far as logos goes, the author does a great job in backing up their claims through specific examples. The comparison that both jobs are in the same field is backed up through examples such as the one where they talk about the knowledge of all sorts of math for engineering, but a broader, more "social perspective" for the administrator job. Another example includes classifying engineering into manufacturing a product, and administrating into producing said product. It helps to put the two into perspective of each other. It also goes further into explaining what careers they are limited to. This good use of logos could, however be expanded upon, but either way, is still shown.

http://eslbee.com/contrast_stick_shift_or_automatic.htm
The article I have chosen “Stick Shift or Automatic” compares and contrasts why people like to drive stick shifts and why they like to drive automatics. The article states the pros and cons of each type of car. The Ethos or the credibility in this article is that the author knows what they are talking about and all of the facts about each car to compare them. Just
their knowledge of the topic makes the reader respect them more for knowing all about the topic. The article is written neatly and clearly so the reader can understand it. The Pathos or the emotional part of the article isn’t so much emotion of the person because you don’t really have emotions about stickshifts and automatics. Instead though the author uses the article to appeal to us and to let us know about stickshifts and automatics. The author also uses the pathos to persuade us to like either the stick shift or the automatic. Finally the Logos or the logic of the article. The author is very knowledgeable about the topics. The author states real facts about stickshifts and automatics. Both similarities and differences are stated to help persuade the reader to think about which one is better. The author of this article did a very good job bringing the article together. To sum up the article it states facts about both kinds of vehicles. It states both the good things and bad things about each. In conclusion they remind us that no matter which kind of car a stick shift or a automatic you should “always remember to drive safely and buckle up!”

Ethos, Pathos, and Logos are the three categories of persuasion according to Aristotle. Ethos refers to the credibility of the author, whether by tone or reputation. Logos refers to the logical arguments made in the essay. Pathos refers to the emotional appeals to the reader that the essay makes. The essay linked above compared the two greatest soccer players in the world that are still playing: those players being Lionel Messi of Argentina and Cristiano Ronaldo of Portugal. This article does a good job of splitting up the aspects of each player and comparing them. As far as Ethos goes, I've never heard of the writer of this article before, which doesn't help its credibility. However, the author does speak authoritatively on the subject and doesn't seem to have any gaps in their knowledge, which does lead one to believe they are credible. There is very little Pathos in this essay. The subject doesn't really lend itself to an emotional evaluation. While there are a lot of emotions that are tied to sports, the author chose not to use them in this article, possibly to appear more unbiased and rational. The area this essay tries to persuade the most in is Logos. Each players' abilities in a certain area are examined and compared. The author does their best to appear as if they are just presenting facts. The writer even gives them a numeric rating, further appealing to a sense of logic. Of course, what would an essay about sports be without stats? The article compares the number of games played and goals and assists made by each player, allowing a curious reader to use their own reasoning skills to draw a conclusion. Looking at this essay carefully, one sees that its main focus is Logos, with some Ethos, and almost no Pathos.

The article that I chose compared and contrasted rural and urban Americans. I chose this article because it is a current US issue that has really shown up in out political system. The article I chose talks a lot about those differences. The author does a good job of being logos in the way that he starts explaining the stereotypical small American town of El Dorado Springs, MO to the massive Kansas City only a few hundred miles north. It is obvious that he has been to both places because he easily explains the best restaurant in El Dorado Springs won't even serve alcohol so as not to upset the local pastor. All of the facts that he presents also help give him credit as an author who really knows what he is talking about. The author also shows good pathos in the way that he relates something we all know about to compare the types of counties that voted in the last presidential election. He called counties voting Democrat "Whole Foods counties" since Democrats are more well known for eating healthier, organic food. He then called the Republican counties "Cracker Barrel counties" since it is a classic, old school restaurant "featuring chicken n' dumplings." I found this to be humorous and therefore it used the pathos method of persuasion. Perhaps the best way that the author used to persuade was Logos. The article I found was loaded with facts and even had quotes from people he interviewed about the issue who were from both places. The author also had pictures to go along with the article that proved without a doubt that he had visited these places and done his research on the subject. Since the essay focused a lot on political issues between rural and urban American's, the author also presented graphs that showed political party voting based on counties. the graphs he created matched what he was trying to compare and they were clean and easy to read.

http://www.buzzle.com/articles/frozen-yogurt-vs-ice-cream.html
In this article, it talks of since so many people are starting to become more calorie conscious with food that many have switched from ice cream to frozen yogurt. Ice cream has always been a wonderful snack to have at night before bed, on a hot day, or if you just want something tasty to eat. The one thing you may not know about ice cream is that its levels of fat and sugar are extremely higher than frozen yogurt. There is also more protein and calcium in frozen yogurt than there is in ice cream. The facts are shown and many can guess who’s ahead of who but other facts bring surprises.
The author used ethos in this article by roping the reader in with jumping straight to the topic of ice cream and frozen yogurt. We are able to see his credibility because they show us the facts between frozen yogurt and ice cream right away. This makes it simple for the audience to see which snack is healthier for you. This wraps the reader immediately into the article and makes them wish to keep reading.
The author shows Pathos by using imagery describing the ice cream and frozen yogurt. They talk of the variety of toppings and as you are reading all of your favorite toppings are flying through your mind. Not forgetting the multiple flavors of frozen yogurt as you walk down the distribution line.
The logical part of the article is when they take the facts of what they show us and why frozen yogurt is a healthier option than ice cream. The facts of the lactose intolerant people are able to consume frozen yogurt without worrying about how their body will respond to it is a nice comfort to have in your mind.
The author did a great job showing the the different sides of ice cream and frozen yogurt.

The article chosen for my comparison and contrast essay was, "The Supergenres of Action, RPGs and Adventure Games." I will be comparing and contrasting Action-Rpg games and Action-Adventure games. The Ethos of this article, credibility, is obvious throughout. The writer of this article even had to go back to do more research just to ensure that the information was credible. The Pathos, emotion, in this article is clearly displayed. The author states a few opinions to clarify certain ideals only an expert so passionate towards gaming could understand. The best part is that the passion for perfection in this article is noticed when mentioned about the reedits of this document. Even more noticeable is that the author tries to help the reader decide their own path of understanding towards if action-adventure and action-rpg really should even be a sub category and how to differentiate the two if the reader deems it necessary. The Logos, or logic, of this article is clearly seen. Similarities are expressed along with the key components that make rpg's and adventure games different. The author uses simple reason along with confirmed research to how each category should be separated. In the end he expresses how this is a guide to understanding the two types of action games.

The comparison-contrast essay I decided to use is by Kenji. In this essay Kenji compares and contrast cows and whales. The essay shows that cows and whales are similar in many ways. For example, they are both eaten by humans. But opposite to that, whale can roam free in the ocean while cows are kept in captive to later be slaughtered for human consumption. The author points out that whale meat may only be a viable food source to island nations while beef is eaten throughout the world. Whales also have a large difference from cows it is seen as less ethical since their numbers have been diminishing there have been laws prohibiting or at least only allowing a select amount of whales from being hunted. These are Kenji’s most dominate points in this essay. Some ethos in this essay are that the author points out that the United Nations have protection laws for wales. Also pointing out that whales are more intelligent than cows and are much more difficult to breed unlike cows. Pathos in this essay are a little less easy to find or come across. In this essay the author points out that that to people in larger countries that the hunting of whales looks violent and is wounded hunting. But also pointing out that we don’t really care about all the cows being slaughtered everyday for beef. As far as I could could tell the amount of Logos are scarce to none. The author does bring up a few facts like the one recently mentioned the United Nations protection laws and also that most the world eats beef compared to whale. Overall the author brought these two articles together showing similarities and differences that I would have never of thought of; the comparison and contrast of cows and whales.

I listen to music on a daily basis so finding an essay comparing rap music to country music was an easy decision. The author of this essay uses a lot of pathos and not very many logos. Most of this essay is fed by emotion or pathos. The writer claims that rap music can send a very wrong message and easily turn people to crime while country music sends a positive message and promotes the good in life. The author tries to convince the reader that rap music can influence people in a negative way and turn them into criminals. This idea is completely fed by the author’s emotion and the author is trying to get you to feel the same way. The author also claims that listening to rap music makes people very violent and causes them to hurt other people. The author wants you to feel emotion over this and he wants this emotion to influence whether you the reader listens to rap music or to country music. These are examples of pathos in this essay. I have to admit the author does make some good emotional points in this essay. The author does make a few good logos in this essay as well just not as many. The author says that a boy beat up his cousin after listening to hardcore rap music which is a true event and therefore a logos. The writer also uses ethos so the readers will trust what he is saying to be true. He does this by saying that he grew up listening to rap music and later in life switched over to country music which the author claims helped him to become a better person because of the positive messages in country music. The author wants you to think of him as a good person and trust him.

Aerobic Training vs Anaerobic Training
This essay is about the differences and similarities between aerobic and anaerobic training. The author describes each training is used to achieve different goals. They then list different ways to use these training regimes effectively. They then resume to describing the condition and feeling of their body after each workout. The logos used in this essay are consistent and is clarified throughout the essay. The message is put across that not only is aerobic training a form of exercise, but also is anaerobic. The reasons for the particular training show which training is best fit for you and your fitness goals. The reasoning of making yourself healthy is reason enough to make anyone try out either of these training regimes. The ethos used in this essay convinces me that the author not only knows a lot about this topic, but also performs these exercises weekly. The benefits of the training exercises listed show the creditability of the author’s knowledge of this particular field. I know this because they describe the feeling of each exercise in depth. The pathos used in this essay persuades me to try out aerobic or anaerobic training to tone my body. It tells in depth on how each training regime will affect your body. This helps persuade readers to follow the regime and decide which one is better for their lifestyle. The interesting facts on the topic solidify the author’s credibility. The essay also relates to the authors real life because he/she does these training regimes on a regular basis. This also gives credibility to her essay. Knowing the benefits of these two types of training will help you decide on which one will fit you the best. The author chose a good topic for their field and showed exemplary knowledge in the differences and similarities between aerobic and anaerobic training.

2. A common theme in real life compare and contrast writings is the adaptation of books into movies. One of my favorite novels, “Pride and Prejudice” by Jane Austen, was adapted into a film in 2005. An anonymous blogger gave her opinion on the comparison between the two. (https://sites.psu.edu/comparingbooktomovie/2014/03/19/week-5-pride-prejudice/) Although this writing is more analytic than persuasive (likely because of the rare occurrence of an impossibility in the choice of superiority between the film and novel), logos, ethos, and pathos are all discernibly used to substantiate his/her opinion. At the start, ethos is used to convince us of the author’s knowledgeability about their subject, quoting the years of release for both the book and movie, mentioning previous cinematic adaptations, and referencing the movie director and book author. The blogger further uses ethos to show his/her knowledge of the meat of the subject: the story. A quick overview of the plot to remind those who have read the book, and provide a foundation for neophytes in terms of the classic reading. Logos refers to logical reasoning to back the author’s writing. This is evident when the blogger compares and contrasts the basic plot and character differences between the two storytelling mediums, using definitive examples. For example, s/he contrasts Elizabeth’s characteristics, citing specific scenarios. Elizabeth was frustrated with her family in both, although her movie character keeps secrets, unlike the easily readable character from the book. Finally, Pathos appeals to the emotions of the reader. A subtle encouragement to both watch the movie and read the novel is found at the end of the blog post. The blogger also references that they read “Pride and Prejudice” as a school project, and thoroughly enjoyed it, perhaps sniffing disdainfully at those who refuse to acknowledge the merit of a book if it is a “forced” read during an English class. Feeling similarly, this segment amused me and caused me to come to the conclusion of the post smiling and agreeing with the author.

http://www.diffen.com/difference/LeBron_James_vs_Michael_Jordan
In the article that I read a relatively unbiased writer compared and contrasted LeBron James and Michael Jordan. I say relatively unbiased because while reading this piece I found that he said praise worthy actions by both athletes but he from the tone of his writing you could interpret that he favored Michael over LeBron. Throughout LeBron's career he has been hyped up to be this outstanding player and was set “understood” goals by sports fans, teammates, coaches, and news casters. LeBron has been set to these standards because he was drafted into the NBA at an earlier age than Michael. LeBron was drafted into the NBA right out of high school where as Michael Jordan played for North Carolina for three years then as drafted into the NBA. When drafted, LeBron as a first round pick where as Michael Jordan as a third round pick. The author used ethos by understanding both sides of the argument, the game of basketball, and really researching the statistics about each individual player. The author also used pathos by pulling on some emotional strings. The author talked about the controversies each player endured. Michael Jordan was only faced with controversy once in 1993 for gambling before a game in Atlantic City. The NBA athlete confessed to losing over $50,000. Whereas Lebron’s careers has been faced with many controversies on and off the court. Lebron has been named the most hated athlete in the NBA. LeBron is constantly broadcasted on TV weather they are accomplishments or disappointments. LeBron has been singled out the most out of any other NBA athlete player. Lastly, the author uses a great deal of logos. The author persuaded us in use of reasoning by stating all the statistics of each player. LeBron and Michael come head to head in statistics meaning that LeBron surpasses Michael in some categories but Michael also outweighs LeBron in some categories. The comparisons and contrasts between these two could go on forever because of statistics. In my opinion, it will truly come down to opinions. Statistics will state statistics but someone somewhere will always have a counter argument on why one is better than the other.
New York = Kneuwe Yourck
In this essay Brian Troutman compares something that almost everyone is affected by or participates in everyday, religion and sports. Troutman begins by saying that sports is seen as a lesser importance than religion, but on the contrary it is treated just as well and sometimes is followed more closely than religion. He first speaks about how religion is the start of many violent upbringings such as Israel and Pakistan conflicts and Northern Ireland conflicts. He than relates sports to it by saying that it too can be the start of riots or violent events. It is very common in Europe and Latin America for a soccer game to start a riot because one team did not fell that it got a fair game. He also points out that sports also rally people in groups that support each other just like religions do. He also talks about how religion is used in sports such as before game prayers and how old Greece athletes would call on the Gods to help them in the Olympics. Troutman also talks about how religion and sports lay particular rules for its players and followers to be guided by.
Troutman than talks about how the intensity of religion and sports can also be different. Even though some sports can cause riots, they do not match the intense warfare that religion can sometimes cause. Also, unlike religion, sports does not have a heaven or a set place or position to obtain in order to gain peace.
Ethos: Troutman has very good grammar and seems to know a lot about the topic at hand. He also cites three different sources and formats it perfectly in MLA showing he is not totally new to writing essays.
Pathos: He gains emotional attention and opinion right away by comparing something that is important to a lot of peoples lives, religion, to something that is only usually seen as for entertainment purposes and not to be as anywhere near as important as religion. He also gives many metaphors such as bible is just a player's rule book that gains emotional attention.
Logos: He gives many logical explanations of things and examples of his comparisons such as fighting in both religion and sports. This is why I like his essay, he gives very good examples of each logical statement he makes which further makes his Ethos look better.

I created this spelling of the word social by sounding it out. The “p” at the beginning is silent as it is in “psychology.” The “c” is social is replaced by the “ti” to give that “sh” sound like it is in the word “patience.” The last part of the word, the “el” sound was simply replaced with an “ell.” The last “l” was silent like many second of double letters in the English language.
http://www.manrepeller.com/2013/12/the-great-debate-flats-vs-heels.html
Aristotle, a Greek philosopher, divided persuasive writing appeals into three categories: logos, ethos, and pathos. Logos is the logical appeal, or persuading by using logical reasoning. Ethos is the ethical appeal which is a method of persuading that is based on the author’s credibility. Emotional appeal -- Pathos -- is used to draw the reader in by appealing to their emotions. Logos, Ethos and Pathos have a Greek root. Logos is Greek for “word”, Ethos is “character”, and Pathos is “suffering” or “experience.” I was drawn to an article called “The Great Debate: Flats vs. Heels” because I’ve constantly been at debate with myself about whether I can, or should, wear heels despite my height. From the very first sentence of the article, I was able to connect with the author due to her use of Pathos, or emotional appeal. The author began talking about her childhood and her favorite heels that her mom owned. When I was younger, my mom gave me her wedding shoes as “play shoes” and they instantly became my favorite. From that moment as a little girl, heels became a secret love of mine. The author used the Logos appeal when she criticized her high school self for insisting on wearing heels every day despite long walking distances and taking public transportation. At the author’s witty mention of growing “5 inches taller faster than Tyson Chandler must have as a pubescent boy,” she portrayed Ethos, or her credibility. Her credibility is portrayed through the use of Ethos because her knowledge of Tyson Chandler, a 7’1” basketball player, shows that she is aware of her surrounding world and capable of connecting to all types of audiences, male or female. The style in which the author wrote her article is in that of comparison/contrast form. Her ingenious use of appeals and clever word phrases makes her article one to model when writing a comparison/contrast essay.

http://www.123helpme.com/compare-and-contrast-essay-online-shopping-vs-in-store-shopping-view.asp?id=230563
The essay that I read was comparing and contrasting online shopping and internet shopping. It was very interesting because it showed me all the disadvantages and advantages each one has over the other.
I found a good amount of examples for ethos in the essay. Logos is the appeal to logic and convincing the audience. The author has a lot of experience with both topics due to the fact that he wrote many examples for both. Every time the author wrote a disadvantage or advantage I always agreed with the statement in my mind because it was all true. The writer really emphasized the good and the bad of each topic, which made it really stick.
Ethos is the appeal to ethics or the credibility of the persuader, which is evident in this essay. The author show ethos by talking about real life situations, so that makes him have more credibility towards the topic. The writer seems very appealing to everyone because the essay is not gravitating to a certain type of person, it could be for anyone. Most people have bought things online and most certainly in a store.
Pathos is an appeal to emotional response and there were a few times where I saw pathos in the essay. The author writes about how he always researches products beforehand and that he’s had many times where the product was shipped to him broken, late or not at all. I can directly relate to that because I love to research and find good deals before I make a purchase. I've also had incidents where my order was messed up, so I did not receive it.
The author really makes the reader see that you should actually do both on-line and in-store shopping. His reasoning behind it is that both have their ups and downs. For instance, he said you should never buy clothes online because you cannot try them on. For in-store he said you may not get a good of a deal if you were to buy it online. The essay actually interested me very much and I really enjoying viewing it more intensely than I usually view and essay.

http://academichelp.net/samples/essays/compare-contrast/medicine.html
There are countless different kinds of medicine. When you broaden the subject you will find two main types: Conventional and Alternative. Conventional medicine is a lot of western medicinal techniques and it is a lot of what you will see in hospitals. Alternative medicine you would have to go to a separate business to find some help. Conventional medicine looks at the symptoms and the factors of the disease; they then try to cure those to cure the problem. Conventional medicine is a better choice during critical situations and makes for a quick-fix. Alternative medicine looks at the body as a whole and observes the environment around it when they look to find cures, they tend to be more stable and long lasting so people generally use them on chronic diseases. Alternative medicine looks at health like a life-long process, so to maintain that health you have to eat healthy, exercise, and take care of yourself. They both include different kinds of remedies; conventional medicine usually looks to surgery and chemically synthesized drugs as the answer, and alternative medicine looks at acupuncture, meditation, yoga, lifestyle changes, massage, and breathing techniques. When people have to pay so much for surgeries after surgeries they start to look at alternative ways to help cure them because it is much more cost effective. The ethos in this writing essay were not the most vivid because it does not say who the author is so we do not know if there is much authority or credibility to them. I do still believe what was said, though, because of the little background knowledge I already had of the subject. There were a lot of logos used in this writing because it was always comparing the two subjects and using facts and information about each to contrast them. There were not very many pathos in this essay because it was more of an informative writing and it did not need an emotional factor for us to understand.

In this article, they are comparing and contrasting alligators and crocodiles and establishing the differences that most people do not recognize. The shapes of the heads of crocodiles and alligators is the main difference between the two. The crocodile has a narrower and longer skull than that of the alligator. On both of the animals, the fourth tooth on either side is much longer and more protruding than any other tooth. This helps distinguish whether it is a alligator or crocodile because in the crocodile, the teeth stay protruding even when its mouth is closed whereas in an alligator, its teeth become way less visible. The teeth of the crocodile, however, are very much like the teeth of a shark. They will never run out of teeth and have an abundance of teeth in their jaw. Their skin is very similar because they are both rough and bumpy, but the alligator tends to be darker than a crocodile. Alligators can be grayish black and crocodiles are usually tan or brown. Their habitat is one thing that really sets the two reptiles apart. Alligators live in freshwater such as lakes, rivers, and swamps. Crocodiles prefer salt water and more coastal areas. Ethos is the ethical appeal. It means that one believes who he respects. The ethos aspect is used in the article when it talks about the state and federal laws. Pathos is the emotional appeal. The pathos aspect is used when it talks about the endangered species. It appeals to the emotions of the reader. Logos is the appeal by reason. By giving credible and factual information,it helps persuade the reader. The logos aspect is used throughout the whole essay with the facts about the differences between the two giant reptiles.

In the essay I have read, the author compares and contrasts speeches given by Abraham Lincoln and Frederick Douglas. The author makes the argument that both speakers used powerful diction and tone to convey their messages. He also makes the argument that even though both speakers speak on the same topic, they try to get different points across. Both of the speakers spoke on the issue of slavery. The arguments that each person made on slavery differed. Douglas spoke on the immorals of slavery and attempted to aid the abolitionist movement. Lincoln spoke on how slavery was necessary to eliminate in order to save the Union.
The author of this essay demonstrates exceptional use and understanding of logos, ethos, and pathos. Logos is the logical appeal of the essay. The logos asks the question of does the arguments the author uses logically make sense. The answer to this question would be yes. The author gives many descriptive details about how each speaker spoke and the content of some of their speeches. The author also did historical research to prove his points even further. The author shows that he also has an understanding of the ethos as well. The ethos is the credibility of the author. In the introduction paragraph, the author shows that he has a clear understanding of both of the speakers and the time period in which they spoke in. If an author does not have a solid credibility, it would be difficult for the reader to believe what the author has to say about the topic. Throughout this essay, the author also shows that he has a clear understanding of the pathos. The pathos is the emotional appeal that the author gives an audience. In this essay, the author picked two important historical figures that some people are very passionate about. The topic that these speakers spoke on is also a very emotional one as well. By comparing Lincoln’s and Douglas’s arguments on slavery, the author is able to draw emotion from his audience. Slavery as a topic usually draws a lot of emotion from the fact that it harmed so many people in the past.

I like this essay because I am a huge fan of history and its importance to things now a days. This essay also shows me a good example of what a compare and contrast essay should look like and sound.
The Ethos, ethnic appeal, in this essay would be pretty small and hard to notice in this essay in my opinion. The only connect I could find was when they talk about world war two and the obvious lack ethics behind the holocaust. The holocaust was a horrible event were about 6 million Jews were killed solely for the fact they were a Jew. The man who lead this holocaust was Adolf Hitler. He was the leader of Germany at the time and he used Jews as a scapegoat to explain all the bad things that had happened to Germany since the end of World War I. The killing of Jews was obviously unethical, but the way they were killed is even worse. They were poisoned by gases, worked to death, burned, shot, starved, and many other terrible ways to die. All of these bring this unethical event to a new level of evil.
The Logos, logical appeal, of the essay was that World War II was a very deadly war(even when compared to World War I). World War I took many lives both from bullets and disease. The death rate was so high during World War I because of some of the stupid strategies used by both sides during the war. Many times during the war defenseless troops were ordered to charge a position

The death rate was so high during World War I because of some of the stupid strategies used by both sides during the war. Many times during the war defenseless troops were ordered to charge a position that was dug in and waiting for them with machine guns. The enemy would be just waited behind concrete or dirt protective barriers as the enemy got close enough to be mowed down. Wave after wave of men were killed and injured with having almost no chance of defending themselves against the enemy shooting at them. World War I was deadly, but World War II was just us deadly if not worse. World War II say a lot of new technology that was used for deadly purposes. Russia alone had more deaths than all of the holocaust victims did by the end of the war. Many Russian civilians were killed because there was a lot of fighting that occurred on Russian soil. Many Russian soldiers were also killed because they were not all equipped to protect their selves like they should have been.
The pathos, emotional appeal, of the essay almost nonexistent. This essay was a nonfiction essay and was more facts than trying to emotionally connect to the reader. I guess you could say that when it talks about the holocaust it could be trying to emotional appeal to your ethics and conscious.
The word I have created is farmbesskie which is pronounced as pharmacy where the b and k are silent. Ethos, pathos and Logos are terms regarding persuasive writing and the style of writing used by the author when it comes to convincing the reader about a certain subject to feel one way or the other by the choice of the author. Ethos is like credibility in the way that the author speaks in a tone of wisdom to a sense. The reader will naturally believe what the author is saying to be true based on how the author speaks. Pathos deals with appealing to the readers emotions like trying to find sympathy in what the author rights just so the reader takes the authors side and point of view. Finally Logos is more statistical meaning the author persuades the reader through logical reasoning like data and specific examples or occurrences. They try and make very good and specific points that lead the reader to join their side. I noticed, in this article I read regarding the comparing of forwards and defenders in soccer and which one is more important, that the author never necisarilly took sides, he wasn’t trying to say one side is better than the other. He simply stated that neither is better and both are just as important as the other. He used more logos writing than anything by stating that forwards can’t score if they don’t have possession of the ball if defenders can’t do their job and steel the ball from the opposing team. Though in the same respect the team cannot win by scoring if they do not have any players who can get around a defender to make the shot that counts because a defender can’t run the length of the field to do so. Overall this author did a good job of explaining and convincing me that these players are both very essential to the game of soccer.

I chose to read an article comparing Mcdonalds and Burger king. This articles compares everything from prices, calories, breakfast’s, and salads. The author blatantly states what is being compared at the beginning of the article which eliminates any confusion on what is being compared. You may have never really gave it much thought but have you ever noticed that where you find a Mcdonalds you can always find a Burger King. For people that eat fast food often or on a regular basis this article is quite interesting, it enlightens you on everything you need to know about the two very successful franchises.
Ethos: The author wrote convincingly that they really knew what they were talking about (which they probably do). The author had a lot of reliable sources and included many facts. The author also stated that he or she has a lot of experience with fast food restaurants.
Pathos: The author used selective word choice that obviously has to deal with food, eating, and fast food restaurants. Being hungry helped keep my focus because it was an article on my favorite food, burgers, but it it was also the intelligent and exciting word choice. The author states all the good and bad qualities of the food of each restaurant.
Logos: The author was very consistent in the article. He or she would compare the same meal or menu item of both restaurants in the same paragraph in chronological order and wouldn’t jump from breakfast items straight to dinner. If the author stated a negative fact about an item of Burger King, they would state another one on Mcdonalds right after that. Vice versa with all of the positive facts. The author does a good job on not taking any sides of either of the restaurants.

This article discussed some of the benefits of holistic medicine over conventional medicine. Ethos is credibility, and this is established immediately simply by looking at the article. There is a short biography of the author in a column and shows him to be an accredited family physician who has been in practice for many years. This article is also clearly backed by several large and respected organizations, such as the American Board of Integrative Holistic Medicine and the American Holistic Medical Association. Pathos is the emotional factor in a work of writing. This is shown in the first part of the article, where it talks about unconditional love being life's powerful healer. This is one of the fundamental beliefs in holistic medicine. The article says that the most distinguished feature of holistic medicine is that it is “based on the believe that unconditional love is life’s most powerful healer.” Logos is persuading by reasoning. This is used when the facts, treatment options, and statistics are laid out for both holistic and conventional medicine, showing that there are many benefits and drawbacks to both. Logically we should reason that the one with more benefits and less drawbacks is the better form of medicine. I found this article to be very interesting. I’m very interested in alternative forms of medicine and am always looking for ways to treat illness without chemicals or pharmaceutical medicines. For example, I know that personally, if my stomach hurts or if I am feeling nauseous, chamomile tea will almost always treat/cure this. Chamomile tea also relieves heartburn. There are of course many forms of medicine that you can buy for these, like Tums or Pepto Bismol, but I see no point in that if a more natural relief is available. I prefer to eat a teaspoon of pure honey as opposed to drinking cough syrup; it works just as well, it costs less, and it is better for your body. I wish more faith was placed in holistic medicine; my family alone has seen that it truly can work wonders.

I chose to read an article that compared and contrasted cows to whales. The author states in the article that there are multiple similarities between the two, but there are also a few differences. Both cows and whales have meat that people use as food. Whereas cow's meat is more popular than whales, mostly because whales are now protected by law. The article also comments on how cows are raised to be slaughtered and are not free animals, but whales are free and have more of a future than cows. Ethos is the credibility of the author and the article. The author of this article shows that they have done their research. The author includes the name of the law that protects whales, and goes into some depth as to what exactly that law does to protect the whales. Logos is the logic of the author, and this author seems to have a good understanding of their topic. Pathos is the emotional aspect of the writing, and I think the author did well in this field. The author plays on the fact that although whales are protected against slaughters, cows are bred for that exact reason. The author humanizes the cows by claiming they have no future whatsoever, and I think the author did so to try and get a more emotional reaction from their readers.
1) Phycie: Pronounced “fish” using the “ph” sound as in “phenomena,” the “y” sound as in “myth,” and the “cie” sound as in “species.”
2) The piece of writing I analyzed for a compare-contrast work was on the topic of cheer and dance. Right off the bat, the author began to speak about her personal experience with both of these subjects. I believe this qualifies under the category of ethos. The writer uses ethos through demonstrating her vast knowledge of both topics. Her credibility was gained by giving personal examples that pertained to her arguments. As a dancer, I recognized the points she stated and wholly agreed with them. Having dancers and cheerleaders agree upon the topics in her essay gives her credibility, also known as ethos.
The author primarily used pathos as the form for argumentation in her essay. She used her writing to give personal examples in which she felt a certain emotion. These experiences she shared in turn created an emotional response in me. One example of her use of logos involves her experience with cheerleading. The author states that when she was a cheerleader she often felt insecure due to the nature of the sport. Her self-consciousness was caused by her fellow cheerleaders. She explained that in cheerleading, it was always a competition for the coaches attention. For the girls she interacted with, cheerleading was always a task of showing-off. Due to the competitiveness of the sport, the girls often turned on each other in jealousy. These unhealthy interactions also led to pointing fingers when an error occurred. The author stated that cheerleading led to a lot of broken friendships. On the contrast, she said that dancing improved her mood drastically. The atmosphere of a dance studio was far different and the writer shared a personal situation of when she was in a dance class. In the dance class, the dancers were going across the floor executing tricks as typical across-the-floor procedure. When the author performed her skill she executed it flawlessly and was elated as she had been working hard on the skill for weeks. Her fellow dancers cheered wildly and proceeded to pat her on the back for her hard work. This instilled a completely different emotion in the author than her prior experience in cheerleading. Both the experiences she shared pertain to pathos.
The author used less logos than pathos, but I found examples of logos in her writing nonetheless. The author used pathos examples to compare the performances of cheer and dance. She stated that the performance of cheerleading was only about trick and flips that could be executed. This is a statement that is reasonably true due to the way cheerleading is scored (score sheets often include many categories for tricks and difficulty but not many for entertainment or performance value). This statement is also shown to be true by the fact that cheerleaders almost never just do performances; they almost always only participate in competitions. The author contrasted cheerleading performance by showing that dancing has a deeper purpose. Dancers’ main purpose is not to execute tricks, but rather instill an emotion in the audience and to entertain.

http://academichelp.net/samples/essays/compare-contrast/happiness-factors.html
I read an article about happiness and the illusion of happiness that consumerism brings. in the article, the author appeals to the ethos with the phrase “According to famous French postmodernist philosopher Jean Baudrillard, the consumerist choice today is defined mostly not by the price of a certain product, but by its symbolically added value.” By starting off their essay with a quote from a specialist in the field of philosophy, it already adds much more credibility and persuasion.
The author uses the phrase “it is easier to pay money for an item which symbolizes, for example, self-confidence, than to make efforts to develop this quality in oneself; material goods stimulate people to seek easy decisions. At the same time, the non-material factors (or the so-called intangible benefits) of happiness—joy, friendship, a sense of beauty, a sense of humor, calmness—do not have an estimated price and are true, compared to their simulations; thus, one cannot buy them, but only learn, which makes them difficult and discouraging to obtain.” as pathos by appealing to the emotions in showing that genuine human emotions are deeper and much more meaningful than the small joys that may come from material objects.
The author uses logos to appeal rationally to the reader with the paragraph: “Even though material things can make our everyday lives easier and help us organize our time and efforts rationally, the feeling of satisfaction which material goods can provide a person with is temporary, and in most cases lasts for a relatively short period of time. One of the reasons why this happens is that since products are endowed with certain values by their vendors, as soon as other more “valuable” items appear on the market, individuals may feel inferior because of possessing “less advanced” goods (Limbo). This causes them to bend over backwards to purchase the latest possible products that in their turn will become outdated rather soon; this creates a vicious cycle of consumption. In their turn, intangible benefits remind of habits; once developed, they remain with an individual for the rest of their lives, increasing its quality. Buddhist monks make the best possible example for this thesis; while having almost nothing in possession they remain one of the most peaceful-minded and fulfilled people in the world.” The paragraph explains the cycle of consumerism and the why the happiness from it is short lived.
I view this article as persuasive and I feel that the author has done a decent job of convincing using the ethos, pathos, and logos.

In this speech, widely regarded as one of the greatest ever given, Nineteenth Century Politician William Jennings Bryan addresses the Democratic Convention in Chicago. Bryan effectively used passion to convey pathos, used reason to deliver a sense of logos, but relied very little on ethos, as he was rather inexperienced.
This speech, referred to as the “Cross of Gold” speech, relied heavily on Bryan’s charisma. It resonated well with other politicians. It rang so soundly that even Democrats with opposing viewpoints on the main topic of Bryan’s speech, the use of a silver standard for American currency, were parading around the Chicago Stadium, singing his praises. Bryan’s speech was passionate, to the point where his speech guaranteed him the Democratic nomination for presidential candidate. Word choice within Bryan’s speech made him be seen as an accessible individual, as he spoke directly to the working man American with consistent use of the phrase “my friends”. He also spoke frequently as though he were speaking directly to you, personally.
The focus of the Cross of Gold speech was the issue of the gold standard. The gold standard was the use of gold as a way to guarantee the value of paper currency, by backing each note up as a portable representation of an amount of gold. The difficulty of this was that the value of gold would often change as more gold was added to the market. This means the value of a dollar bill could be reduced if a large vein of gold was found. This disproportionately affected the poor, as they often had fewer dollars to lose. The Populist party, of which William Jennings Bryan was a member, campaigned for the working man, advocating a state-run railroad, direct election of senators, an income tax, and the use of silver as the standard for currency. All of these reforms, if implemented, be an attempt to level the playing field between the poor and the rich. Because the Populist party was so popular among the working class, Bryan was given a chance to speak at the Democratic Convention. In Bryan’s speech, his logos was the addressing of the situation of the gold standard. He spoke about other countries becoming bimetallists, where both silver and gold are used as a standard, becoming the driving force behind then President William McKinley’s inability to support the poor. McKinley was unwilling to change the country to a silver standard, as we campaigned on a strict gold standard maintenance platform, and wanted to wait to make the US a bimetallist country until an international agreement could be signed. Bryan argued that McKinley was unwilling to change the gold standard because McKinley was supported by big businesses, who thrived under the gold standard. Bryan also said that the President should not wait for other countries to sign a treaty to change to a bi-metal standard.
William Jennings Bryan’s best move was the use of biblical symbolism. His speech is called the Cross of Gold because he equated the working man to Jesus Christ. He ended his speech with “[Y]ou shall not press down upon the brow of labor this crown of thorns. You shall not crucify mankind upon a cross of gold.”
Bryan's effective use of symbolism is something that many writers need to work on. The effectiveness of his shorter sentences should also be noted.

The essay I read compared and contrasted two restaurants in Lake City, Tennessee, Fox’s Diner and McDonald’s.It was composed by William Gipson. Mr. Gipson appeals to the logos, the logical parts of his essay, of the reader by stating that “Studies show that loud colors like red and yellow increase customer turnover.” when he is talking about how McDonald’s is formatted to increase productivity and customer spending. By stating facts he gives his essay a logical and realistic feel to it. He adds credit to his work. He appeals to pathos, the emotional response in the reader, when he talks about the diner. He uses such colorful and descriptive vocabulary so as to invoke an emotional response in the reader. He says that the gamblers will get a ‘dull look’ in their eyes as they spend their money and that ‘the same people have worked here since before I was born.” This has the reader feel like they too have known the employees their entire life. It is hard to live with the same people and not feel some emotional attachment to them. Then there is the appeal to ethos in his essay. Ethos is an appeal to the ethics of the reader or the convincing of the credibility of his essay to the reader. He adds this credibility by saying that because McDonald’s is so productiful, many other large food chains have used their business plan. He convinces the reader that McDonald’s is not just some ‘big box’ food chain but also an intelligent one.
Overall, I enjoyed his essay. I felt like I really got to know the people that frequent the diner and McDonald’s. It also made me feel more of an attachment to the people of the diner over the people of McDonald’s. This surprised me as I thought that the language he used when describing the diner seemed to give it a drab feel. Perhaps this was adding to the ‘home-town’ feel of the small diner.

2) Already having a slight case of senioritis, I am anxious to move on to college. This essay helps explains the differences between college and high school helping to ease the gap of misunderstanding that some high schoolers have of what college really consists of.
Logos is the logic, the way the author persuades the reader by the use of reasoning. This author does a good job of using logic to reason ideas out about the differences between high school and college. The author reasons, through her own experience and that of others, that the reason so many people enjoy college is the lack of a definite daily schedule. College students get more freedom in the choice of the classes they attend and the time they attend those classes, and they do not even have to go to class if they do not feel like it. But the author also points out that if the college student does not attend class they are wasting their own money or their parents’ which is just pointless. Why would you pay for school and then not attend it? Ethos is the ethical side; the convincing that is done by the character of the author that the reader can perceive. In this article, the author does not reveal much of their character. The essay consists mostly of facts, but the author has good grammar choices with few mistakes. Pathos is the passion or feeling side; it is appealing to the reader’s emotions. Considering I am a senior, I find this article to be very appealing to me and very relatable because I am interested in the transition that will take place in my life next year. Other high school students will be able to relate to this as well because they are probably looking forward to college and ready to be done with “the cheap melodrama and pathetic mandatory attendance” that high school consists of.

The article I read about is comparing and contrasting living in the united states, as well as living at home and at college. I chose this essay because it is two things I want to do. I already have senioritis, but it is my dream to see different aspects of this world. The essay gives the reverse viewpoint of an American that has lived their whole life in this country. The essay gave reasons (logos) as to why she did not want to be at home any more. With the freedom of being at college and across an ocean she had more choice. She did not have to put up with nagging parents and annoying siblings(the normal teenage reaction). But with freedom she gained many more responsibilities; such as doing her own laundry, cooking, and time management. Pathos is present when she explains how nice it was to have her family when she was stressed out and needed help. For example her mother would make her favorite cake or cookies when she was having a hard time. Her father would help her with the other side, like homework when she did not understand it. Her siblings would always find ways to cheer her up when she was in a mood (even though they were annoying). She goes on to say that she misses them most of time when she is at college because no one can be there for her like her family. She also talks about the culture change(ethos) that she had to cope with the first time she was in America. How her family supported her learning the language, mannerisms and different cultures of Americans. It was hard for her to actually make friends the first time she moved to America, and then how hard it was to move away from all she accomplished. She ends the essay saying she is thankful for all she has learned in her experiences.

2.) http://ardhendude.blogspot.com/2011/03/difference-between-classical-greek.html
My article was focused on the similarities and differences between a Shakespearean tragedy and a Greek tragedy. Along with being riveting, the article also enlightened me to many of the differences between these two writing styles that along with hindsight bias seem quite obvious. The author’s thoughts flowed very well together and his transitions along with the compare, contrast style he used made him seem very knowledgeable on the subject. The way he speaks of the Shakespearean and Greek plays implies a sense of familiarity and overall confidence on the subject matter. This gives the reader a great sense ethos from the writer. In other words the reader feels confident that the writer is reliable and has a deep understanding of the subject matter. Another great quality of this particular writer is his detailed explanations. When he compares or contrasts a subject he uses very particular and specific examples from both Shakespeare’s plays and Greek tragedies. For example, he states that a major difference is Shakespeare’s tragedies center on man being his own downfall. Greek tragedies on the other hand usually involve some twist of fate--something totally out of the hero’s hands-- that leads to the hero’s downfall. The author then goes on to give various examples of this such as Romeo and Juliet being their own fault and Odysseus’ predicament being more of a god’s revenge. These relatable examples give the reader a sense logos; the idea they receive is that a piece is logical and clear. The author you can tell is a scholar, but does a great job relating to the reader. He pulls in examples and then clearly explains them, making the pathos for the reader much stronger. The emotional connection is not strong because the writer is comparing two classic literature styles, but the use of familiar titles and references helps the reader to connect.

This essay is a comparing and contrasting Kickboxing and Brazilian Jiu Jitsu. The writer focused on the topic of Kickboxing being an offensive and striking art. While Brazilian Jiu Jitsu was a defensive grappling art. I enjoyed how the writer did the comparisons and contrasts by putting the fighters into a hypothetical fight, then explaining what each would do differently. The author of the essay touches on the argument of patience and wisdom, out beating the feats of speed and strength. He says that a strictly Brazilian Jiu Jitsu trained fighter out matches the Kickboxer. However this goes back to the idea stated in the introduction, when the author says “The superiority of one art form over another can be easily argued”. This is a statement I strongly agree with; in the unpredictability of fighting it is easy to argue the superiority of one art to another at any time however a fight can always prove you wrong making the competition much more engaging, There is an ethos pathos, and logos in this essay. The ethos is the credibility of the essay, and what makes the author believable. In the essay the author claims to have participated in both martial arts; this gives the author credibility. They pathos is the emotion in the essay used to persuade us via emotions. This essay’s pathos is demonstrated when the author refers to Brazilian Jiu Jitsu having “supremacy” over kickboxing. The author conveys this thought also by insinuating that BJJ (Brazilian Jiu Jitsu) is the more technical of the two arts. Lastly, is the logos, the logic of the essay; logos is demonstrated by stated facts giving reason. In this essay the logos is shown by giving the background to the essay with all historical facts. Overall,l I enjoyed this essay although it is blatantly one-sided in the comparison.

I was reading this essay thinking, "Huh, what would it be like to see what people think about the two most renowned fandoms in the world. I came across this essay thinking it was going to show how much better the Empire was going to be compared to the Federation. As a Trekkie myself, I was expecting the worst. This essay compared the USS Enterprise-A and the Imperial Starship Destroyer. The essay included the fact that if it were later ships in the Star Trek series, that it would be a better outcome for the Federation. As you would suspect the over powered ISD would be able to blow the Enterprise out of space but there you are wrong. The author talked how the shielding of the Enterprise would be able to withstand the attacks from the TIE fighters and be able to hold its own when fighting the ISD head on. The author gave different scenarios on how the Enterprise would be able to out maneuver around the ISD and be able to lose it with a warp space jump. The author tried to combine the emotional fact of both fandoms and gave specific examples of the technology used in both universes. The weaponry has always been over powered when it came to the Empire but everyone knows that. For my essay I hope that I will be able to give everyone a clear imagine in their mind on how the differences of classic and modern rock can also be tied together as Star Wars and Star Trek are slightly similar. I will need to use compelling arguments when describing both of these topics and I will also need to continue to be listening to both to help create a finite description on the sounds and rhythms used in both.

As I was scrolling through the numerous sample essays, this particular one caught my eye. The topic is over Creation or Evolution. With such a controversial topic I was compelled to read it. The author begins defining what Creationism is (the belief that God created everything) and Evolution (all species and life evolved over time). I found it to be quite interesting that the author never really favors one side over the other. With every valid point they brought up with one side, they shot it down with another valid point from the other side making the reader really think about what they believe in. The author then goes on at the end introducing the idea that perhaps God simply created life but species do indeed evolve over time and that the two work hand in hand together. Possibly neither side is correct and it is a waste to even argue such a diverse topic. The ethos is the credibility of the author. At the end of the essay the author has reliable sources attached and they seemed to know a lot about both sides. Both sides were very convincing with their arguments showing that they took their time to research this topic. The pathos, emotional appeal, is the belief that God indeed does exist. The author goes into detail about how Creationists believe that all life was created by God and that He controls everything. The faith for someone to fully believe that this is how all life was created through God is the emotional aspect. The logos, logical appeal, of this essay would be that Evolution is the more logical choice. Students are taught about Evolution in school. The author also had very convincing scientific information in the essay whereas the main argument for Creationism is the Bible.

In this essay Tom Brady of the New England Patriots is being compared to Peyton Manning of the Denver Broncos to debate who is the best quarterback in the league.. Both players are in a league of their own and put in countless hours of film watching and hard work to help their team and themselves improve. Both quarterbacks are also the most decorated quarterbacks in the league. Between them they have four super bowl wins and three super bowl MVPs. They both also have the first and third best winning percentages in the league. Manning has better overall stats being second to Farve in touchdowns thrown, passing yards and total victories although Brady has beaten Manning ten out of fourteen times. The essay compares how the two quarterbacks have the amazing gift of placing a ball through the smallest window to beat the defense and how both quarterbacks know exactly what the defense is going to do in just about every situation. When looking at both quarterback stats in the postseason Brady outweighs Manning with a postseason record of eighteen and seven to ten and eleven respectively. Brady also beats Manning in Super Bowl wins with three to Mannings one. The essay then comes to an end by explaining that both quarterbacks are amazing and one is not better than the other, also that both will be going to the Hall of Fame by the end of their careers. In this essay the use of a patho is when they talk about Manning’s neck surgery that sidelined him for a couple of year and when they spoke about Brady being drafted 122nd overall. Another use of pathos is when they told how Brady was lacking receivers to throw to because of injuries or other causes. Use of ethos in the essay are when the author explains how Brady and Manning will both be inducted into the Hall of Fame at the end of their careers or when the author talks about how Manning and Brady are some of the best quarterbacks in football history. Lastly this essay uses the use of logos in the essay are when the author tells of Manning and Brady’s giftedness on the field.

The comparison-contrast article I read was comparing and contrasting the Nintendo 3DS and the Playstation Vita. In this article they compare the hardware, software, and many other things about these two products. As an avid videogame player this essay really spoke to me. I consider myself a solely Nintendo player, so the thought of a system possibly being better than the 3DS seems absurd to me, but after reading this essay I might have to reconsider being a Nintendo guy.
The Playstation Vita has a higher resolution screen, and a faster and stronger core processor. The Nintendo 3DS has better game selection, and better portability. Both of these systems are portable and meant to be on-the-go systems that can be played anywhere. They have about the same battery life and are both very new systems with some kinks to work out.
This essay focuses mostly on its logos; it uses logic and reasoning to compare the two items. Since they are treating you as a prospective buyer, appealing to logos would be the best way to go about it, giving a person facts about the two products they are comparing, instead of trying to use their opinions to attempt to influence readers.
The fact that they focus so much on logos and facts, rather than their opinions, boosts the ethos of the essay. They generate respect as an author by not bashing one product or by not allowing their personal experiences with the product influence their opinion, except in places where voicing an opinion is appropriate.
Because this essay is basically a product review, comparing two different products, it does not have much in the way of pathos. This I believe was a great choice, because the items being compared and the manner in which they are compared do not lend themselves well to emotional appeal.

Ethos: The narrator never really bothers to label himself as ethical or not; however, he does bring up a good point about happiness lying more in oneself and not in material things, which I suppose could be translated into an ethos piece if you really wanted it to be.
Pathos: This essay clearly appeals to human emotions - it is all about happiness, and finding happiness from non-material things, not material things. It discusses how people strive to be happy, and how they will do anything that seems legitimate, in order to be happy.
Logos: People buy things because they think those things will make them happy. In order to stay happy, they keep buying more and more things, but essentially, are never quite completely content with the materials or themselves. This bit is vaguely the most logical.

Great Beginnings
An object can be defined under multiple names and characteristics, all varying slightly or completely diverse. The saying, “It’s like comparing apples to oranges”, is a commonly used saying, even though most people have never compared apples and oranges in depth. Apples and oranges are both fruits, but have very different characteristics.
Logos has the base of “log”, in which the word logic has a correlating base. In any speech the author or orator will try to convince the audience to think in a certain way. Logos is using logic and wit to try to woo the audience to think how you want them to think. An example of this logos in an essay would be to support your claim or idea with facts and statistics, but do be careful not to overuse these facts. The audience will not believe you if you ramble off with an endless amount of facts. Instead combine other writing and speaking techniques to try and win your audience.
How boring would a blog task be if it was full of just facts, no word flow, and a bad title? Pathos refers to the use of emotion to evoke the audience, and it is a very effective strategy in both writing and public speaking. The power of pathos is sometimes not used for the improvement of society, an example of this is Hitler. Hitler used powerful emotions to evoke large crowds of emancipated, poor germans to follow his plans. This led to the start of World War II in which after a few years allowed for Hitler to begin the “Final Solution”. Pathos can also be used for the best, like wtih Franklin Delanor Roosevelt. Roosevelt used powerful speeches to help Americans through the Great Depression and almost through World War II. Pathos and Logos are extraordinary ways to convey an audience, but the audience will not listen to a fool.
If a random man with no prominent features walks up to stage, and tries to teach an audience about electromagnetic physics. Chances are that the audience will have a tough time trying to follow this unknown man, and also because electromagnetic physics is unknown to most people. Now if a man like Johnny Manziel walks up to a stage and talks about his college party career, many people will not be able to relate to the partying, but will be able to relate to this Johnny Manziel figure. Ethos is the credibility, this is like the citations within a research paper. Most people now discredit wikipedia as a credible source, even though the information on the website is completely credible. Giving the audience the idea that you have background in a subject will automatically gain their attention if you also you Logos and Pathos.

This author compared and contrasted cows and whales. The author started off by giving obvious examples of similarities and differences between the two. The first paragraphs’ examples were later used as the main ideas behind the body paragraphs. I wish the author would have used more similarities between the two subjects instead of using the body paragraphs for only differences. The author does explain the differences in whole while keeping the ideas of each whale and cow equal. They did not just say that cows live on land and whales do not. The essay would not be a very good one if they did decide to write like that. The author also decided to compare and contrast the subjects back and forth instead of using multiple paragraphs for each.
Logos: The author was not trying to persuade a thought as a main goal. He/She seemed to be siding more with cows and their usage. The whales were not as used in detail when describing their lives.
Ethos: This author seemed to be on a neutral side when it came to ethical passages. I think the author feels bad for animals that are destined to be slaughtered for their meat and other useful components. He also mentions cows are fenced up and waiting to be slaughtered. I feel he does not like the idea of a life destined for death that is not natural.
Pathos: The author seems to be upset for cows. “They don't have any future.” The author could have left this sentence out of the essay unless he or she felt it had to be stated. He goes onto say that whales have an open future for themselves as long as they do not get got caught by whalers.

Ghoti + foam + knight = ghoakn
In order to make the “f” sound, the “ph” is replaced with “gh”, like it is used and pronounced in the word “ghoti”(aka fish) or “tough”. “Oa”, from the word “foam”, replaces the long sounding “o”. Lastly, to form the “n” sound, “ne” is replaced with “kn” from the word “knight”. Specific sounds used from these three words form the word “ghoakn”; more commonly pronounced as “phone”.
http://softball.isport.com/softball-guides/the-difference-between-baseball-softball
This comparative writing was an extreme relief for me personally. In the writing, all of the differences between softball and baseball are stated. As a softball player, I find it to be a nuisance when others refer to it as baseball. Softball and baseball are two completely different games although there share the same idea: hit the ball and score runs. Similarities between the two sports however, are also stated. From bats, pitching distances, and lead-offs, all of the differences are clearly explained. A logo is simply just logic that explains the writers claim or it can be facts that back the claim up. This particular article uses plenty of facts to support the claim: softball is different than baseball. Numbers for different weights and lengths of bats are used multiple times. Along with that, distances from the pitching mound to home plate and from one base to another are also given. Technique is a huge part of almost every sport and the writer of this article does an extremely good job in explaining the differences. I could go on and on listing different facts that were in the writing but that would be boring and redundant. An etho is the sources credibility. The source that I chose to use is credible because most of the facts that are stated about softball I know from personal experience, because of playing softball for the majority of my life. Along with that, the way they speak through their writing is intelligent sounding. Pathos are vivid language used within the article. This comparative writing uses a lot of language that would appeal to either softball or baseball players. As a softball player, this entire piece of writing appeals to me. Others may not find it quite as interesting as I do. The terminology of the game gets me hooked all on its own. Overall this essay does a phenomenal job of differentiating softball and baseball in order to eliminate any confusion.
