One can learn a lot from a hippy; from a farmer; from a wrestler; from a drug-experimenter.
People like this could have very valuable things to say if you took the time to listen. Just because they have a different view on things than you do doesn’t mean that they are a terrible person, they could have just been said to be that way. Like a villain wrestler is only a bad guy on the screen. In reality they probably are way different than their character on the show. The same goes for good guys, they are probably not all good or stupid or weak as they are portrayed in the show. In the same way some of the rivalries are real like on the show. Most guys will go out their even if they are in pain, not because of their paycheck, but because of the respect they get from the fans that makes them feel good and like more than just an average person. That’s why they go out their and destroy their bodies little by little with every match. If you saw it from their point of view you would realize just that. The love of glory gives an immense stimulus.
Ovid (BC 43-AD 18) Roman poet.
A hippy may seem like just a colorful druggy, but in their perspective they are just expanding their horizons beyond what you can get from everyday life. They believe that the drugs that they do make them see the world in a new and more interesting way. They believe that it kind of slows time so that they can notice things that they have never seen before. I usually try new things all the time because I never really know what I actually do like until I try it. I also think that mcmurphy just wanted to expand his horizons beyond the work farm and that is why he pretended to be crazy. Chief Bromden on the other hand just wanted to be secluded from everyone else because he was scared, that’s why he went to the institution.

The statement I chose was number three. This statement is “One person can change an established, stable environment.” I believe that this statement is 100% true. Ken Kesey is trying to tell us this by introducing McMurphy to the ward. Within a week McMurphy already had Nurse Ratched lose her composure, showing that with a little push and a shove in the wrong direction, he can take down the system. On the other hand, however, he has McMurphy do something in the novel that symbolically shows that he cannot take down the system by himself. Kesey has McMurphy try and lift the very heavy, concrete control panel and throw it out the window. McMurphy is confident in his strength and believes that he can lift it himself, but he is unable to lift it by himself. Kesey uses this example to symbolize that without the other patients help, nothing will change in the ward.
There are many other examples of one single person changing a civilized, stable environment. Slavery is one of them. During Civil War times, the North and the South were divided. The North was very much anti-slavery while the South was completely pro-slavery. After a time of this, some of the slaves got sick of being beaten and over worked. A certain man named John Brown decided to do something about it. He got a group of slaves together and raided Harper’s Fairy, Virginia. He counted on the other slaves of Virginia to aid him in overturning Harper’s Fairy and end slavery in that area. The other slaves, however, were afraid of the consequences and unsure if their effort to end slavery would change anything or not. The other slaves decided not to aid John Brown and he was overrun by General Lee and the U.S. Army forces. Although this was a loss for John Brown and his band of slaves, this sparked rebellion all over the South to end slavery and eventually it started the Civil War which ended slavery and combined the North and South into the great country we know today.
Adolf Hitler, the greatest manipulator in history, once said, “Make the lie big, make it simple, keep saying it, and eventually they will believe it."
The statement I chose was number 3. “One person can change an established, stable environment.” This statement is saying that one person can have a major impact on a place they enter. If one person is very loud and obnoxious and enters a building, everyone in the room is going to notice. It may not always be a bad thing though. Sometimes places and people need change.
I can relate this to be life by talking about my brother. He was living with us and was causing many problems around our house. He was not listening to our father and always breaking rules. It was as if he was trying to be a rebel like McMurphy in the book. He would do anything he could to make a scene. He enjoyed the attention and thrived on it. As of this day, he lives with my mom because it was too much for me and my father to handle. We were getting stressed out worrying about where he was or who he was with and whether he was okay. Although it was tough to deal with, it helped us open up our eyes to the attention he needed and how things were different in his perspective.
In the novel McMurphy enters the ward to get out of having to do his work and the jail. He thinks that going to the ward is the easy way out. He causes many problems and makes big scenes to get what he wants. Like when he wanted to watch the World Series baseball games. He got the other patients to vote with him to be able to watch the games instead of clean at that particular time during the day. Even though McMurphy and all of the other patients agreed that they wanted to watch the games, Nurse Ratched would not allow it. She would shut off the television. But the patients wouldn’t stand for it. Instead of cleaning, they sat in front of the black screen and stared at it for hours. Trying to prove they would do what it takes to get what they want. Although, none of the patients would have had the guts to stand up against the nurse before McMurphy came along. McMurphy is changing the way the patients act and think.
Albert Einstein said “Setting an example is not the main means of influencing another, it’s the only means.”( http://thinkexist.com/quotes/with/keyword/setting/). Einstein had a similar idea as Kesey. He is stating that setting an example will show others that it is okay to break out of their shells and be who they are. That the way to show others how to be individuals is by doing that yourself. Setting an example or leading a group of people is the best way to get others to do the same.
Gay marriage should be allowed by each state in the union.
I chose this statement because I believe that gay marriage should be allowed and people should be able to marry whoever they want and love. There are two concepts about gay people, one they are born gay, and two they choose to be gay. I personally think that people are born gay, there is nothing they can do about it and that is ok. People always say if your gay it is a sin and you will go to hell for it. I dont think that is true because God made them who he wanted them to be and he obviously wanted them to be different. I dont think God would create them to be gay and then send them to hell for them being what he wanted them to be.
"Straight Americans need... an education of the heart and soul. They must understand - to begin with - how it can feel to spend years denying your own deepest truths, to sit silently through classes, meals, and church services while people you love toss off remarks that brutalize your soul." ~Bruce Bawer, The Advocate, 28 April 1998
Gay men and women are no different than anyone else. They are in our community, churches, and even our school. Some have come out and said they are gay and some are still hiding it. There should be no reason they feel they need to hide it, they should just be accepted as who they are. They are people just like everyone else and should be treated that way. It's not like it's hurting you by being gay, if you don't like it ignore them, but they don't need your constant criticism and put downs. They should be able to live a happy life just like the rest of us.
In the novel Harding is gay. He is married to a beautiful woman but this is just to hide the fact that he is gay from everyone cause he doesnt want to deal with the criticism. At the group therapy sessions Nurse likes to talk about it just to make him feel uncomfortable and to make everyone misbehave and pick on Harding. I think Harding could get better and be released but he is so scared of the outside world and what everyone thinks about him being gay that he would just rather stay in the hospital where he can hide and feel safe.

I believe some people simply never can/will change. Nurse Rached treats all of the patients like dirt.Maybe it's just simply because she was tramatized as a child and is scared to let people in her life. She just doesn't seem like she wants to change for anyone even if it were for herself.
I know alot of people that don't care to change themselves, if thats the way they want to live that's fine with me.It's none of my business anyway,I know one person very close to me that choooses alcohol instead of changing and forgetting the past. I do believe she feels bad for what she has done, however the guilt is too much for her to handle and that is where she goes to drinking to solve her problems. I think there are healthier ways of handling things maybe she has a mental disorder of some kind that I don't know of, or maybe alcholism runs heavily in her family. Although she does remind me of nurse Rached alot, I can't say that I really can relate to her and understand her as a person.
Just because someone doesn't want to change, doesn't neccessarily make them a bad person. I don't feel people should judge either unless if they really know what is going on. Even then a person needs to be careful and watch what they say because you never know how bad you could hurt someone and push them over the edge.

i feel like chief is reminiscing about the old days out on the prarie with his dad when he looks out the window and see's the dog and stuff. he sees these things and starts to remeber wut its like when your free, when you dont have a care in the world. but some people dont feel free, even in their own homes. some people just cant get away from everything they are going through and the people their around.
in my life i know some people who dont feel free no matter where they are or who theyre with. and thats not right, someone should always have a comfortable free space they can be in. if they cant be in it then there is something wrong in their life and they need to change it or be around different people. but some people dont like change so they change nothing.
and i think the novel shows that change can bring good things to all people. R.P.M. brings change to the ward and all it is is good, he loosens up the guys and gets the nurse mad, something no one else can do. this is quite an achievement and i think this is why chief looks up to him and is finally coming outta the fog.

I disagree with the statement, "Self-esteem is not very important in life." Self-esteem is EXTREMELY important in our lives for a multitude of reasons. I will go even further with my reasoning to say that self-esteem is a basic human need. Self-esteem allows us to respect ourselves, respect others, and overall survive in this world. If we do not respect ourselves, then who else will? (ex: no one watches out for themselves more than you do)
Additionally, self-esteem can be a critical factor in the grades that we as students earn, our relationships with our peers, and how we determine the rest of our lives. Self-esteem allows us to get out of bed every morning and make the most of each day. Self-esteem is what separates the students at BVHS from the character's in Kesey's book. Think about it. Some of the patients, including Harding, live inside of the ward voluntarily. They are too afraid of what others think to live their own lives. Harding and the rest of the patients in the ward have very little or no self-esteem, unlike McMurphy. McMurphy gives Chief self-esteem and allows him to see things normally again. Notice the different sides of Chief with and without self-esteem? He's either playing on a football team or he's letting a mop push him against a wall. I think you can put the two together.
McMurphy gives the patients exactly what Nurse Ratched tries to take away. Self-esteem. Self-importance. Self-worth. Etc. However, I agree that there can be an over-exaggeration of self-esteem. I'm talking about becoming haughty, cocky, hubris, arrogant, and so on. As long as one can find a moderation of self-esteem, they are set. I believe that moderation is the key to almost anything in life. Set your goals high, and strive for them. But how can one excel if they have no pride in themself?
Self-esteem will affect the way you play a certain sport or activity. If you believe that you cannot do something, you WILL NOT DO that something. It is never going to happen. Not without self-esteem. Self-esteem separates an NFL player from an embarrassed first grader. Self-esteem can win or lose a game, potentially. One will not go anywhere with effort, patience, and a belief in themself.
I am currently a member of the Boy's Varsity Soccer Team. I take pride in that. After last season, our team lost eleven starting seniors, including some of my close friends. At the beginning of this season, my coach told me that I would have to step up and play the center defender, or the "sweeper". I did not want to. I was scared, frightened, worried, alarmed, mortified, etc. Coach Chase noticed my doubt in myself. He told me he believed in me and that this was something I would have to face. What other player could potentially play in that spot? No one. This was up to me.
Currently, I still play as the center defender. I would not be anywhere without my team, coach, friends, family, or teachers. I also would not have been able to assist my team had it not been for the self-esteem from myself, my coach, and from my surrounding teammates. There are many other stories in the history of the world similar to mine. It is all in your head. WE CAN DO ANYTHING WE SET OUR MINDS TO.
"If I feel depressed I will sing. If I feel sad I will laugh. If I feel ill I will double my labor. If I feel fear I will plunge ahead. If I feel inferior I will wear new garments. If I feel uncertain I will raise my voice. If I feel poverty I will think of wealth to come. If I feel incompetent I will think of past success. If I feel insignificant I will remember my goals. Today I will be the master of my emotions."

Fiction can be made absolutly real by the readers imagination.
I believe that a persons imagination is so powerful and most people dont even realize it, especially as we grow older. I know this is true as an only child. You dont have a brother or sister to play with so you get creative so you dont feel so lonely. Some children create imaginary friends, because they get bored or they are shy and have trouble making other friends. But somethimes our imagination can work against us. Like when we get into bed on a stormy night and those shadows on the wall dont look like the branches they really are, we imagine them to be monsters that are coming to get us.I think that we need need to not forget about our imagination as we get older, you dont have to make it childish. Just keep an open mind, dont make things impossible.
I think this concept relates to Chief, he has the most real imagination. More real than most kids, even if they have an imaginary friend. But his works against him more often I think. He has illustions that seems so real to him, that he usually doesnt like. He believes in them, knows they are real, no matter what anyone says. Chief is convinced that the staff on the ward placed fog machines around the ward to confuse him. When really he makes it up, when he isnt feeling safe or doesnt want attention drawn to him. The most obvious proof of his extreme imagination is when he says, "Its the truth even if it didnt happen." He is telling you that he knows what he is seeing you wont believe. He doesnt expect us or anyone else to believe him. Maybe thats why he decided to make everyone think he is def, because he doesnt even want to bother telling peole what he thinks when he already knows they can not relate to him.

The Statement I choose is that Gay marriage should be allowed by each state in the union. I agree with this statement. I think that people are born gay. Being born gay was not a choice they had so they should be accepted just as much as a person who was born straight. What is it hurting anybody if everybody was allowed the same privilege of marrying their spouse even if they were the same gender. I believe in America everybody should have the right no matter which state they live in to marry whomever they want to because America is a free country. The people who look at this as wrong and are biased against gays should really think hard about what they would do if their child was gay. Would they abandon them or would they accept them for who there are? Some people say that being gay is a sin, but God is accepting of all people and so should everybody else.
In the novel Harding is forced to hide his secret of being gay so he is not picked on. He is living a lie by being married to a beautiful woman, but without his wife he would be criticized and picked on. The nurse I think has an idea that Harding is gay and like to bring up the topic in group therapy to pick on Harding and get the other men to pick on Harding and try to break him down. If Harding could get over that fact that he is gay and stand up to the criticisms of being gay I think he could recover and be released from the hospital.
“They are preserving the sanctity of marriage, so that two gay men who've been together for twenty-five years can't get married, but a guy can still get drunk in Vegas and marry a hooker at the Elvis chapel! The sanctity of marriage is saved!” ~ Lea DeLaria I choose this quote because it proves that fact that just because you are gay you can’t get married even though you have been together for a long time, but if you are straight you can marry whomever you would like, no matter the amount of time you have known this person or if you are not in the right state of mind at the time of the marriage.
People who are gay should not have to hide the fact that they are gay because they are worried about what people will think of them or what might happen to them because they are gay. Gay men and women are everywhere, they are in our lives daily even if we don’t know it. People should be more accepting and take people for who they are on the inside and not if they are gay or not. In life you may find that one of the nicest people you meet is gay, are you just not going to become friends with them because they are gay? If you chose that path you might miss out on a great friendship.
The statement I chose was “One person can change an established stable environment.” I completely agree with this statement because when my brother moved out the house, it became less hectic and crazy around the house. He made his presence noticeable by being loud, annoying, and constantly horsing around. You would always know that he was in the house because he would be singing as loud as he could and jamming to his music. Even though some of these things are annoying, his presence is missed around the house.
In the novel McMurphy makes a profound presence in the ward, he acts boisterous and obnoxious. When he walked out of the bathroom in his towel and white whale boxers he completely shocked and modified Miss. Ratched. McMurphy is trying to change the other patients, he wants them to have there own opinion and stand up for themselves against the nurse. When McMurphy wanted to watch the World Series he had to get a majority vote from the men and they were too afraid of what Miss. Ratched would say or do to them that they didn’t want to vote. When McMurphy punched his fist through the nurses station, that shows that one person can change an established stable environment. He shows that if someone else won’t make an effort to change things then he will. I believe that McMurphy is doing the right thing by showing the men that they can have the own opinion and that they can stand up against the nurse. He is the one that is helping them grow and become better and stronger individuals, not the nurse.
The quote that I found was from William Faulkner “Never be afraid to raise your voice for honesty and truth and compassion against injustice and lying and greed. If people all over the world…would do this, it would change the earth.” This quote is hundred percent true if people would voice their honesty opinion about something then the world would be changing. This quote is saying that if people would stand up for what is good then the world would be a better place.
The statement I chose was, “Gay marriage should be allowed by each state in the union”. I chose this statement because I strongly agree. I believe that everyone should be able to love and marry whomever he or she wants. I don’t think that it’s fair to make laws against gay marriage because some people are born gay and they can’t help whom they love while others chose to be gay, which doesn’t make it wrong, or any worse. I don’t think that it is wrong for men to love men or for women to love women. I believe that it is wrong for people to be told they cant marry the person they love because it is “wrong” in our society.
"And the LORD God said, 'It is not good that man should be alone; I will make him a helper comparable to him.' Out of the ground the LORD God formed every beast of the field and every bird of the air, and brought them to Adam to see what he would call them. And whatever Adam called each living creature, that was its name. So Adam gave names to all cattle, to the birds of the air, and to every beast of the field. But for Adam there was not found a helper comparable to him. And the LORD God caused a deep sleep to fall on Adam, and he slept; and He took one of his ribs, and closed up the flesh in its place. Then the rib which the LORD God had taken from man He made into a woman, and He brought her to the man. And Adam said: 'This is now bone of my bones And flesh of my flesh; She shall be called Woman, Because she was taken out of Man.' Therefore a man shall leave his father and mother and be joined to his wife, and they shall become one flesh. And they were both naked, the man and his wife, and were not ashamed."
—Genesis 2:18-25
Although the Bible states that men and women were made for each other and that parts of the bible say that gay marriage goes against the nature of God, many people believe that the Bible should not be followed to it’s full extent. Many people are not religious at all and making laws that go with what the Bible states, is unfair. What ever happened to the separation between church and state? I personally know people who are gay, and the laws against their marriage is hard for them because of the worry if one becomes ill. Because of the gay marriage laws, if one of them becomes seriously ill, the family has the right to decide what to do, before their partner. If they were allowed to get married, the other person could make the decision, just like if a husband was seriously ill, the wife had the decision about what to do and how to handle the situation. The same thing happens if one of them passed away, the other doesn’t have to right to make decisions, the family does, though their partner knows all of their wishes.
In the novel, Harding is gay, and is always criticized for it. At the meetings, nurse Ratchet always picks on him and gets the other patients to make fun of him and make him feel horrible for being gay. He can’t help being gay because he was born that way. Being gay does not make him a bad person. I think it’s horrible that he is married to a very attractive woman to try to cover up being gay. I think that he is ashamed, and shouldn’t be, because its just who he is and he should stand up for himself and not let the nurse and the other patients knock him down.
Everybody's journey is individual. If you fall in love with a boy, you fall in love with a boy. The fact that many Americans consider it a disease says more about them than it does about homosexuality.

Ashley's quote from Faulkner reminds of me of the John Mayer song "Waiting on the World to Change." You heard/like this song?
Yes I have heard this song and it is a good song.
I am choosing the statement: "One person can change an established, stable environment." I believe this statement is true because if you have an outgoing person enter a room your going to notice them and they will have some sort of impact on you. The statement of, "One person can change an established, stable environment", is telling us how much one person and their actions can change an environment. The change can be positive or it can also be negative. Sometimes it can be both.
I fully belive this statement because I have an uncle who has paranoid schizophrenia. I could tell all sorts of different stories of which i have been very uncomfortable due to my uncle and his outlandish behavior, but the one time I think that has had the greatest impact on my family so far is when he came up from Yankton this summer. My uncle came up from Yankton because he believed his house was being broken into and he thought someone was watching him. So, he hitched a rid up to Sioux Falls to my aunts trailer. At this time he was not taking his meds so he was extremely paranoid. He didnt trust my aunts locks on her trailer so he goes out and buys new locks and changes all of her locks. When my aunt asked him why he did that he told her that he did it to make sure that no one else would be able to access the trailer. My aunt knew then he was off his meds and thought that she would just play along with him until he left then she would switch the locks back. It wasnt untill later that night that she became afraid for her children's lives and her own life. My youngest cousin dean is sickly so he has to take pills before he goes to bed. My unlce being a paranoid schizophrenic doesnt trust medicine, so he yells at my aunt to not give Dean his medicine. My aunt tried to camly expalin to my uncle that Dean needed his medication or he would get really sick. She then started walking toward Dean to give his medicine to him. Dean saw her coming so he started going to her to get his medicine. My uncle flipped out and he got right in between my aunt and cousin and started yelling at my aunt and tried to get the medicine from her. During his yelling he swore and looked like he was attacking my aunt. Dean and his older brother Ethan watched the whole thing and are to this day still terrified of my uncle. My aunt ended up calling the police. But before they got their my uncle had already left. That experience my aunt had with my uncle has definantly made me more aware of whats going on around me when my uncle is visiting at my house.
In the novel, Kesey brings RPM into the ward. By bringing in RPM Kesey has given life and hope to all of the patients in the hospital. RPM inspires people to fight for what they want and what they deserve as human beings. With out really realizing what he is doing, RPM is helping the patients get better. If thats not an exapmle of how one person can change and established, stable environment; I dont know what is.
“To the world you may be just one person, but to one person you may be the world.”
- Brandi Snyder.
This quote is so true. It doesnt matter who you are, how old you are or ect, everything you do in your daily life effects someone else. People need to realize this. Especially the ones who think that thier life doesnt matter or that they wouldnt be missed if they were gone. Trust me YOU WILL be missed because just like the quote says, "...but to one person you may be the world."
I truely believe that the statemet, "One person can change an established, stable environment", is true. Anyone who doesnt agree with that statement should really think about it or pay more attention to others around them in their life.

I chose number 2 “All people are “crazy” to some extent.” Crazy what in terms is crazy I think crazy is well your opinion. Someone can say something is crazy but that is your opinion. Like my dad he used to tell stories to me and my two other brothers that would seem crazy to some people but to us it was just the normal. I don’t think he should be put in a loony bin just because he tells stories that were just a bit out there. He still tells some of those stories to his younger patients (He is a physical therapist). When I get older I want to tell some of those stories to my kids. The Nurse I think is crazy and should be in that ward more then some of the patients in the ward. She doesn’t want to get to know anyone in the ward. She just wants to see numbers. She needs to see the people for what they are People not just another number on the wall. Someone like Harding shouldn’t been in the ward. He is in the ward because people don’t want to deal with someone that is different then they are. So people just put him in the ward maybe not physically put him in the ward but, they did it none the less. They did because they didn’t like him or just didn’t want to deal with him.
“Most people treat the present moment as if it were an obstacle that they need to overcome. Since the present moment is Life itself, it is an insane way to live” Eckhart Tolle http://www.quotemonk.com/authors/eckhart-tolle/index.htm.
This is true a lot of people are like this they live life for the future and not what is happening now. I think its so crazy how people can say the world is going to end in 2012. Who cares? Really I mean just because you think the world may end then and if it does well then it does. You can’t control what either the Higher Power or just what Earth does. So you should stop trying to live in the future and live for the here and now and what is happening now. See that life is not your future or were you are going but were you are now that’s what life is all about the here and now.
The topic I chose on the anticipation guide is number nineteen, Gay marriage should be allowed by each state in the union. I completely agree with that statement. Gay men and women should be able to get married if its alright for a man who likes women or a women who likes men to get married why isn’t its ok for a man who likes a man and a women who likes a women to have that same privilege. I think its sad that there are people out in this country who are still against homosexuals.
I believe that the older generation is less excepting of gay people because they way there were raised. Most were taught being gay is wrong. Just because the bible imply marriage is between a man and a women some people fell that’s the only way too go. I do however think more people are beginning to accept it a lot more then they used too, buts its still not enough. There is men and women out in society who cant come out because they are scared about they way they will be treated. I respect the people who do come out it shows they don’t care and its awesome.
I believe people are born homosexual I don’t think they choose it. Because why would someone choose something that will no doubt get them made fun of. I think people should treat gay people the same way they would treat at straight person. I’m sure there are other people in our school who are gay and you would never guess it, because they “act” straight.. Just like Harding does in the novel, hides is gayness by marrying a beautiful women. The people who haven’t came out yet probably wont in high school because they see how the few openly gay people we have in our school get made fun of. I here some people talking about how this guy is gay I cant talk to him because he will try to get with me. That’s stupid because just because there gay doesn’t mean they automatically like you not all straight people like every man or women that’s walks by, it’s the same thing.
I again as I previously stated believe that no matter if you gay, straight, bi sexual you should be able to pick who you marry. No matter if you love a man or a women its still love and who is supposed too tell you that you cant make a commitment through marriage to that person. The government shouldn’t be able to limit who can and cannot get married. I hope in the next few years people will start too see that and expect change in the governments rules.
I also hope in the future people that are homosexual will be able too freely come out, not worry about not fitting in, being made fun of, or even physically hurt. I know that’s a lot too hope for, but if everyone just opens there eyes and see that gay people are just like you and me. Some guys may act different then the ideal “man” but that doesn’t mean there any less of a person. I liked these quotes: “Why is it that, as a culture, we are more comfortable seeing two men holding guns than holding hands?” “War. Rape. Murder. Poverty. Equal rights for gays. Guess which one the Southern Baptist Convention is protesting?”
Everybody's journey is individual. “If you fall in love with a boy, you fall in love with a boy. The fact that many Americans consider it a disease says more about them than it does about homosexuality.” James Baldwin
The statement I chose was number nineteen; "Gay marriage should be allowed by each state in the union. I belive that people should have the choice to marry whoever they want, and not have the government control who people love. Its something I belive people cant change and that there born with, why would people want to grow up and have people making fun of them because there gay? I dont think anyone wants that, if they could change it they would, I also believe its a wrongfull chemical imbalance in the brain. This kinda is like Cuckoo's Nest because Ms. Ratchet is trying to conform everybody to her ways and in today's society being gay is wrong to alot of people and it deals with conformity because people try to turn people stright and to be just like everyone else.
"Be who you are and say what you feel, because those who mind don't matter and those who matter don't mind."
Dr. Seuss
That quote is 100% true, it states that the people that are truley your friends shouldnt care if your gay or not, they'll be there for you anyway.
CJ WACHTER.
Self-esteem is not very important in life.
MY LIFE:
I strongly disagree with that!! Personally I need high self-esteem to get through all the hard times in my life. It's hard to go to school everyday when kids are mean, tease you, or make fun of you. However when everyone knows you and your popular it can sometimes be easier. Having high self-esteem can even help your grades. When you believe in yourself that you can do well on a test will make you do better then if you have no faith and dont study at all. Also high self-esteem can help you help people! You can help them be positive and get through their times of low self-esteem.
THE NOVEL:
From the novel we obviously know that many men in the ward have extremely low self-esteem! Chief is one of the main ones. Being huge like he is and feel extremely little and wanting to hide in the fog all the time says he has low self-esteem. Harding also has low self-esteem. He he has no faith in his wife and always thinks she cheats on him, which makes him sad and angry when they talk about it. On the other hang McMurphy comes in the novel showing the view of very high self-esteem. He feels good about himself, tries to make others laugh, and doesnt like the way the ward is treating the men. You can tell he feels highly of himself and is not afraid (at first) to make the Nurse explode! If more of the characters in the book felt good about themselves living live in the ward wouldn't be so bad. Also the little meetings that they have is basically to put all the men down, which lowers their self-esteem.
QUOTE:
"Low self-esteem is like driving through life with your hand-break on." Maxwell Maltz
His quote is so true. There is a big difference from riding your bike while holding your break or not holding your break down. Once again it is icredibly hard to get through tough times in life when you can even think positive about yourself. Thinking negative and people forcing you to think that way does nothing but weigh you down. Taking your "hand-break" off makes it so much easier! Or people being there for you, makeing you feel good about yourslef, and helping you through things is much better! To have positive self-esteem may mean you have to work harder and think about the positives but it makes life more fun and easier to live!!
I chose statement 2, "All people are 'crazy' to some extent." The reason I chose this statement is because I like how "crazy" is in quotations. This lets me describe the different types of crazy, instead of the crazy we associate with actually being insane and only insane. Being crazy relates to my life in many ways. For example: I am "crazy" about the Dave Matthews Band and John Mayer. It all depends on how you use the word crazy. You could also say you're "crazy" about somebody..meaning you like everything about that person so much you would do anything for them. So I agree that all people are crazy to some extent, it just depends on what they are crazy about..make sense? Like a person could be "crazy" about food, music, t.v., video games, reading, animals and so many other things. So I think all people are "crazy" to some extent.
In the novel, Nurse Ratched thinks almost all of the men are "crazy". What she does not realize is that most of the men are not crazy..they are mostly either just misunderstood or they could not find anyone that could relate to them in society; and the reason they could not find anyone like or accept them in society is because society is so CONFORMED and has the perfect "instructioin manual" (if you will) on how every person should turn out.
In the novel, McMurphy sees that these men are not crazy. They have just basically been brainwashed into thinking that they are by the way Nurse Ratched treats them. McMurphy acts on this when he tries to make changes around the ward. But at first, of course, the Nurse does not allow any changes. Eventually however, McMurphy starts gaining the trust of the other patients and they start agreeing with him and supporting him whenever he goes against something Nurse Ratched says. When all of the patients do these things, Nurse Ratched tries to blame it on the face that the men are "crazy" when in fact they now know that they really are not.
"You lift my feet off the ground, you spin me around...you make me crazier, crazier. It feels like I'm falling and I, I'm lost in your eyes you make me crazier, crazier, crazier."-Taylor Swift
These are lyrics about how love can make you "crazy".
"All stories must have conflicts to be worth reading"
I agree with this statement because nothing in our life goes without conflict, so why would we wish to read a story about a person who has the perfect life and nothing bad ever happens. Our lives revolve around the conflicts that can and will occur. Conflicts bring change that brings wither a joy or sadness. i believe without change from conflicts we would have no emotions. Emotions are cause by feeling but if you only ever experence one feeling of joy than how will you ever know anything different.
Stories also need to have conflict so make us feel better about our own lives. In the novel men are taken to the shock shop for doing something bad, if we were to read this after getting yelled at by our parents for a bad grade it would make us feel better because hey all our parents did was yell at us. we can find peace in knowing they didn't send us to get electricuted just to make us hopefully a little more controllable and perfect. Conflict in stories really puts our lives into perspective. "Sometimes you have to make things up, to tell truths that alter outcomes. Without the power of the imagination we lack the power to alter outcomes, so if we can't imagine better outcomes in a better world, we cannot act to acheive these."-Ruth Ozeki
No life comes without conflict, from sibling rivalry to boyfriend girlfriend tiffs, everyone deals with arguements and fights and other conflicts. Conflicts help shape our character and grow to become more civilized and help our community. without conflict the world would be lame and meaningless. If you sat and thought about conflict you would know that everything involves it. no careers would be availible because no one would beat eachother at football because that would cause conflict, no one would write a book or play about anything because it would need to have conflict to be worth anyone's time. no companyies would exsist because we would need the conflict of needing an item for a company to be needed to make that item.
conflict runs the world and without it there would be nothing. just as a book needs conflict to be worth the time to read and to a larger entent enjoy.
I chose statement 2 that says all people are “crazy” to some extent. I agree with this statement because we are all different and crazy in our own ways. The word crazy in the dictionary has about 13 meanings. It could mean that you are mentally ill, senseless, infatuated, intensely anxious, unusual, or wonderful. Being “crazy” doesn’t always mean that you should be put in a mental hospital.
Being “crazy” relates to my life because I am crazy about Taylor Swift. I know so many things about her and I love all of her songs. I could probably tell you every word to every song she has written, even the ones from when she was 12. In my situation being crazy is that you are maybe a little more infatuated with her than the average person. Does that make you crazy? Does that mean you are so different and belong in a hospital? I don’t think so. I think everybody is different and yet the same. We all conform but we none of us are exactly the same in every way.
The whole novel so far has been about the patients being “crazy.” The reason they are in there is for being “crazy.” But, are they really crazy? They all have differences that society didn’t want to accept. I don’t think that makes them crazy. They simply couldn’t find somebody in society that was just like them, which would be impossible. Nurse Ratched wants them to think they are crazy even though they aren’t. She uses this as another way to control them. Then, McMurphy comes to the hospital. He sees that the patients aren’t really crazy and that they are being tricked into thinking they are. I think he is going to get the patients to realize that the nurse is just tricking them and that they will fight back. The nurse is the one who is crazy for treating the patients this way every day, enjoying it (it seems), and getting paid for doing it.

"All people are "crazy" to some extent."
Life-
I believe that this statement is 100% correct. I go nuts whenever i think about hunting. Some people may think im "crazy" for killing animals or too obsessed with a hobby I love. I think people who are still adults who idolize imaginary people/thoughts like Harry potter and twilight are crazy myself. I BELIEVE that "conformity" and "crazy" are like peas and carrots. If you don't conform to what other people believe or think then you are going to be blamed as being "crazy". Just like conformity no matter what you do in life you will be crazy to someone else.
Novel-
This book is basically about the ideology of being crazy. Everyone in this book is crazy compared to the other. The patients in the ward think/thought that RPM is crazy for being "cool" and "rebellious". RPM thinks that Billy and some of the other acutes are crazy for being still in the ward when they aren't committed but are there "voluntarily". He can't wrap his mind around the fact that they are afraid of the world and don't think that they can adjust to the rules. The readers are supposed to feel that the nurse and themselves are crazy for forcing humans just like them into being scared to be themselves and have the ability to live like everyone else.
Quotes-
"You have to go on and be crazy. Craziness is like heaven."
-Jimi Hendrix
I like this quote because i feel like it is saying that if you are free and crazy you will feel like you are in heaven.
"I'm crazy, and I don't pretend to be anything else."
-Calvin Klein
This quote is great because someone somewhere is always going to think your crazy no matter what you do so why change yourself just to please them.
"You know, a long time ago being crazy meant something. Nowadays everybody's crazy."
-Charles Manson
This one says it all.
One can learn a lot from ahippy; from a farmer; from a wrestler; from a drug-experimenter. I believe aperson can learn from others. There are many things to learn in life, whomever it is from.
In my own expierence I have learned a lot from others. I have learned many things from my grandparents who were farmers. They taught me not only about some farming but other life expierences. I have also learned many things from my parents. They have taught me that even if I am pushed down to get back up and everything will be fine in the end. They also taught me the way I treat people is the way they will treat me. Also that no matter how hard things are they are there to cheer me on.
In the story "One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest" the characters have learned a lot from eachother. Before McMurphy arrived Chief was quiet and to himself and now he wants to do more things and is thinking about talking. Also before McMurphy arrived Cheswick was shy and to himself and now before he died hew was saying his feelings and more outgoing. Also in the story McMurphy has learned from the lifegaurd that being mean and disrespectful to Nurse Ratched will not get him out of the ward any faster. He has learned Ratched is the one who decides if you go to a different ward or completly out of the ward.
A quote from Franklin P. Adams says "I find that a great part of the information I have was acquired by looking something up and finding something else on the way." Meaning you may be trying to learn about someone or something but find something completly opposite that helps you in the long run. I believe that there is a lot to learn in life. No matter who or where you find it. Anything you learn makes you that much more smart.
I disagree with the statement Native Americans have been treated better than fairly by the U.S. government and citizens.
Native Americans have not been treated “better than fairly” from the start when we came to the U.S. and invaded their Territory. We ran them off of their land totally, taking the best for ourselves for farming and tore their land apart looking for gold. After we tore the land apart finding nothing, we moved on and relocated them. We hunted the buffalo just to leave them there to rot and by doing so we took away their most useful resource. The Natives would use every part of the buffalo: the bones, muscles, the hide and more to LIVE. We tried to make Natives white when we forced our beliefs on them. We forced them to go to school, learn our language, cut their hair, and wear our clothing. Also, we expected them to forget their beliefs and religious ways and take in ours. We have cheated them out of land, resources, culture and religion. Therefore we definitely haven’t treated them “better than fairly” but “worse than fairly”.
I have had first hand experience with seeing what we have left the Native Americans with, virtually nothing. My experiences spent on the Rosebud Indian Reservation have opened my eyes to how cruel we treated the Indians. The land that we designated for them is not fertile or fit for farming. Being the white person going to the Reservation I was not always welcomed by everyone, especially the older Native Americans. The children were more open to interaction with white people. We have taken away their ambition in trying to make them “white”.
In the psychiatric ward the patients aren’t being treated fairly just like the Native Americans. They are limited to what they can have like one pack of cigarettes a day. The Native Americans are limited to their land like the patients are limited to their building and space. The nurses and black boys treat the patients how we treat the Indians, with little to no respect and as if they are superior. McMurphy even though he is one of the patients, he is not only about himself but shows interest in other patients. In comparison, there are some white people that support and care about the Native Americans.

4. "Self-esteem is not very important in life."
Life-
I completely disagree with this statement. I believe having self-esteem is very important in life. If you don't have good self esteem people run you over. People with low self esteem can't stand up for what they believe in. Those people then conform to the world's beliefs. If you have high self esteem you can stand up for what you believe in and not conform. By having self esteem you will be less likely to follow the crowd if your friends are doing something dumb or dangerous. Also when you have high self esteem you are more likely to succeed in life. Having high self esteem helps me get good grades in high school because I believe I can do it. High self exteem gives you the confidence to try new things. In my life I had the confidence to try snowboarding and I'm now addicted to it. It also gives you the power to believe in yourself. When you respect yourself others will usually respect you as well.
Novel-
Chief Bromden is the first character that comes to mind when I think of self-esteem. Chief obviously does not have high self-esteem. He lets everyone push him around and they tell him what he can and cannot do. Chief probably was picked on as a child for being a large indian. That still affects him now as an adult. He doesn't even recognize himself in the mirror. McMurphy is showing Chief that he matters. Chief is slowly becoming more and more confident as the book progresses. McMurphy is a character that has an abundence of self esteem. He doesn't care what people think about him. He won't conform to the ways of the nurse and he stands up for what he believes is right. McMurphy is the backbone for the other patients by standing up for them during group meetings.
Quotes-
The song "Self-Esteem" by The Offspring talks about the singer not having self esteem and being pushed around by other people. This song tells you why you should have self esteem and why it is important in life.
"To be yourself in a world that is constantly trying to make you something else is the greatest accomplishment."
~ Ralph Waldo Emerson
I chose this quote becaue I agree with Emerson. I think you need to have the self-esteem to be who you are.
"Low self-esteem is like driving through life with your hand-break on.” Unknown Author
I like this quote because it tells of the importance of self-esteem. If you don't have self-esteem you won't get anywhere in life.
"A person's worth in this world is estimated according to the value they put on themselves."
Jean de la Bruyère
That pretty much sums up why self esteem is important.
Chelsea Mattson
I choose statement #2 that says all people are crazy to some extent. I do agree with it completely. When you think about it one person's idea of 'crazy' might be 'normal' to someone else who is thought of to be 'crazy' by yet another person. I know, it seems confusing but really it's quite simple, everyone has their own definition of the word crazy. Dictionary.com says that crazy can be an adjective, a noun, or an idiom, and people use it in each one of those contexts. Each and every person is going to have thier very own opinion on the matter. Us as americans might think the customs or religious beliefs of foreign countries are crazy, while they are thinking we are crazy for the things we do at the same time.
It's similar to the quote that says "beauty is in the eye of the beholder." Beauty, or beautiful, and crazy are both titles that can be placed on or used to describe most anything and everything In life. One persons view of beauty is going to be the polar opposite of the next persons view. Well crazy or crazyness is the same way, no two people have the exact same definition of either word.
As human beings we judge things very quickly, and it can sometimes be hard to change first impressions, Nurse Ratched judges people in Coo Coos Nest when she determines their level of crazy or 'sickness' in the ward, wheather to place them in disturbed, actues, chronics, or vegetables. Its a complete judgement that determines pretty much the rest of thier lives since they are too 'crazy' to know better than to do anything about it.
To be honest I have called others or myself crazy many times, not necessarily as a bad thing either, I tend to see the word crazy as meaning fun or ridiculous. I would describe some past experiences i've had as crazy simply becuase they were out of the ordinary occourence in my life. This novel has brought a completely different meaning to the word crazy though, becuase when i think about the book's version of crazy, mentally/physically crazy come to mind. In the book being crazy is a bad thing, its what gets you into the ward in the first place. Being crazy is also what gets a character into the novel, the crazier a patient is, like mcmurphy, the more he stands out. The book itself is crazy, defines crazy, and really makes you think about YOUR defintion of CRAZY.
crazyness is not necassarily a good or bad thing and I definitely think that all people are indeed 'crazy' to some extent.
"Insane people are always sure that they are fine. It is only the sane people who are willing to admit that they are crazy."
- Nora Ephron
I chose one can learn a lot from a hippy; from a farmer; from a wrestler; from a drug-experimenter. Many people think these lead to the negative instead of looking at the positive. One can learn from a hippy because they let the United States be freer and less strict. You can also learn from a farmer. Farmers help everyone from fuel to learning hard work. Wrestlers show you how to be strong, and you can learn from a drug-experimenter well they take you to a different world to expand your life.
A hippy changed this world in many different ways; with out them this country would be different. Woodstock and other movements helped us understand that we need to be freer and explore more.
Farmers are very dedicated; my parents both grew up on a farm so they know that you need to work hard in your life to get what you want. Since my parents worked on farms they share how hard and difficult it was. Now there is very less farming which I think is why some people think they should just get what they want handed to them. Farmers are on a schedule just like the ward in the book, they get up at 5:30am to begin their day. Do chores and crop until 10 at night then do it all over again. In the ward they do the same thing wake up at 6:30am then get their medicine, go through therapy and have they time then go to bed and do it all over again.
Drug experimenters are very interesting. Like Kesey they take you to another part of you to think. "I believe that with the advent of acid, we discovered a new way to think, and it has to do with piecing together new thoughts in your mind. Why is it that people think it's so evil? What is it about it that scares people so deeply, even the guy that invented it, what is it? Because they're afraid that there's more to reality than they have confronted. That there are doors that they're afraid to go in, and they don't want us to go in there either, because if we go in we might learn something that they don't know. And that makes us a little out of their control." By Ken Kesey himself. Quoted in the BBC documentary, "The Beyond Within: The Rise and Fall of LSD," 1987(http://www.alternativereel.com/includes/top-ten/display_review.php?id=00095) From people like him we great ideas out of them, like One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest. This makes you explore your mine just like drug experimenters.
Jordan Meyers p.5
I agree with the statement "all people are 'crazy' to some extent." There are all kinds of different theories about what "normal" is. I am considered an "emo kid" when i walk around in my skinny jeans and my long hair which is considered "crazy" by some people. “Insane people are always sure that they are fine. It is only the sane people who are willing to admit that they are crazy.” said Nora Ephron and this is true for everyone. The statement all people are "crazy" to some extent relates to the novel because very obviously McMurphy isn't "crazy" he is just very devious and knows how to get out of things very well. This is how the statement relates to my life, the novel, and the famous quote.
Jordan Meyers
I agree with the statement "all people are 'crazy' to some extent." There are all kinds of different theories about what "normal" is. I am considered an "emo kid" when I walk around in my skinny jeans and my long hair which is considered "crazy" by some people. “Insane people are always sure that they are fine. It is only the sane people who are willing to admit that they are crazy.” said Nora Ephron and this is true for everyone. Insane people may think that they are just fine, but people who are on the outside looking in they just see someone who is disturbed. Someone who is willing to admit that they are “crazy” (meaning that they like to just have fun awkwardly) can just deal with the fact of what other people think of them and live like they always have. I know that people tend to think that I am “crazy”, but I just like to be who I am and I really don’t care what other people tend to think. I wear what I want and I say what I want (which has gotten me into a little bit of trouble) and I like what I like, so love me or hate me I really don’t care.
The statement “all people are ‘crazy’ to some extent” relates to this novel because McMurphy isn’t “crazy” but is in the mental institution anyway. I know that he has been put in the mental hospital because he has pulled so many blinds over so many people’s faces that he has been fortunate to get into the mental ward and not being put into jail instead. I still don’t understand EXACTLY how he has done this but I am supposing that he did this just by “sweet” talking some of the people at the work camp or in the jail. This statement could also apply to Chief in the way that he is “crazy” but not as “crazy” the people in the novel seem to think that he is. I am just waiting for the moment when everyone on the ward realizes that Chief has the capabilities to speak and to hear what they have all been saying.
The third statement states that "All people are 'crazy' to some extent". I totally believe this. This is for the reason that one should ask themselves, "What is 'normal' anyways?". I can't think of a true definition for the word 'normal'. I mean, sure, sometimes there may be a vote taken and the majority of those people have something in common and there are always those few supposed 'outsiders'.
But really, everyone is different right? If you really got to know a lot of people, you will probably find that each person has something that seems totally weird or crazy about them. But since you do not know everyone, you can not know those crazy or weird characteristics about them. However, you could also not know how much they are like other people too, if you don't know them well. They could be very similar to many of the people that you are familiar with, therefore they would seem normal? If you knew them that is. For example, I am use to eating waffles for breakfast and breakfast only. When i hear about someone eating waffles for lunch or supper, I think that is totally weird. However, those who eat waffles at other times in the day, like lunch or supper, think that it is totally normal to eat them then. When they hear or find out about others eating waffles for lunch or supper, they connect with those people and think of them as normal, where as they might think me strange to not eat them at any other time.
Or, perhaps you define 'normal' as being more like yourself? Therefore, you would think that if anyone did something different than you, or in a different manner than you would do it in, then it would be considered crazy to you? Like, for instance, in the novel, One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest, the patients in the ward all find it normal to each other once they find out that each of themselves is terrified of Nurse Ratchet and likes to hide away, be quiet, and not stand up for themselves often. But then McMurphy comes along. He is not terrified of Nurse Ratchet, he stands up to her instead at first, he doesn't like to hide away, he doesn't like to be quiet, and he stands up for himself most of the time. The patients in the ward thought him to be crazy when he first arrived at the institution. Chief especially thought of him to be very foreign.
Nora Ephron explains this concept pretty well in her quote, "Insane people are always sure that they are fine. It is only the sane people who are willing to admit that they are crazy." Or this concept is also well explained in Robert Anton Wilson's quote, "The only normal people are the one's you don't know very well."
Hate is inherent to human nature. This simple statement defines why people do bad things. Revenge, jealousy, envy, fear, ignorance...there are many reasons one person can hate another. When we believe somebody has wronged us, we desire revenge. When we see our spose with another person alone, we become jealous. When we see somebody who is better, faster, or stronger than us we envy them. One may fear the power of authority and secretly move against that authority. A white man may hate a black man because he was told to do so by his racist neighbor.
"The price of hating other human beings is loving oneself less." This quote by Eldridge Cleaver states the truth about hate. You see something in them that you hate about yourself. The more hateful you become the more you lose yourself in the process. One cannot love until they have hated and one cannot hate until they have loved. Although hate is generally seen as a weakness, it can also be a strength. Sometimes, people will do bad things because they love somebody. A man has a wife and a family. One day he comes home to find that his family has been brutally murdered by a psychopathic serial killer. That man's love for his
family turns to rage and it will steadily consume him until he can fulfill his thirst for revenge.
Nurse Ratched is unhappy therefore nobody is happy. Nurse Ratched hates McMurphy when he is enjoying himself and encouraging the others to enjoy themselves. McMurphy hates Nurse Ratched because she is trying to enforce her belief that everybody should be unhappy. I believe the key to McMurphy's success is to make Nurse Ratched happy. If he can make her truly happy she may be a more caring and loving person.
I believe many people can learn a lot from a hippy; from a farmer; from a wrestler; from a drug-experimenter. I believe you can learn something from anybody you meet along the road. Every person has a different story or life lesson to tell you. Most stories have a theme you just have to dig for them.
In my life time I have come across many people, and have heard many stories. The one story in particular that always sticks out in my mind was from my grandfather. My grandfather was a very interesting character to say the least. He was a WWII vet. He would tell stories about how he partied on his nights off to try to forget the horrendous things he had seen. He would tell me all the mistakes he had made and how they made him who he is today. He would explain that people would literally try to stab him in the back yet he felt no hatred.
In the novel, I think that Kesey is trying to show us that things aren't always as they seem. He shows us that even if someone isn't 'normal' then it doesn’t mean that they don’t have adequate thoughts and ideas. Kesey shows us our own faults and how we treat other people. He makes us analyze why we do what we do. Kesey might have made some mistakes in his life but it doesn’t mean he was a bad person. As children we are told that you learn from your mistakes and others mistakes as well.
As Winston Churchill said, “All men make mistakes, but only wise men learn from their mistakes.”
I think this quote ties everything together. We learn a lot from our mistakes as well as others. It made Kesey who he was by the fact he was a farmer, and a drug user. He as taught me many lessons thus far in the book and I am sure there is more to come.
I agree with the statement, one can learn a lot from a hippy; from a farmer; from a wrestler; from a drug-experimenter. I choose this one because my grandpa is a farmer and has been his whole life. He always says to me “Katie you kids these days don’t know what hard work really is.” My grandpa dropped out of high school in 10th grade to work and save money to get a car and support his new future wife that was pregnant (my grandma), his parents just didn’t give him money he worked for everything he has to this day.
In the novel Ken Kesey shows that people are very different. He was a very successful writer and he was druggie. And in the book McMurphy does state that all of the Acutes are not nuts they may be a bit stranger than the average Joe on the street. But, they don’t have to be locked up in a hospital taken control of.
God has given you one face, and you make yourselves another.
-William Shakespeare
We must make the best of those ills which cannot be avoided.
-Alexander Hamilton
The question i wanted to divulge on is #12. Influence other people is something everyone should do and i agree with that. If you influence someone hopefully for the good you are leaving a mark on them which can either help them or hurt them in the future. Like how Mcmurphy has an impact on all of the patients at the institution it shows that even one person can make a difference in someone else's life. Mcmurphy shows them how to live and how bad their life is in the institution where he thinks they don't belong. He thinks they belong out in the real world instead of locked up in there where they have to follow someone else's rules.
If everyone influenced someone else in their life we would have a much better world. People would think better of themselves. We wouldn't have people who think they are not important because they'll have had someone influence them which shows how important they can be. One small deed like that can greatly benefit anyone in this world.
Influencing someone else's life will benefit them forever. Like my parents have influenced for good in many ways and they showed me how to be good and how to do the right things in my life. Their influence has shown me what to do and stayed with me and will stay with me for the rest of my life because of how it has benefited me. They make me believe in myself even when i think that no one cares, they show me otherwise. Something like that is what everyone should feel.
A famous quote i found is "leadership is influence" by John C. Maxwell. It tell like from the book how Mcmurphy's leadership has influence the rest of the patients to stand up to the nurse or "the establishment" and free themselves to be individuals in the world instead of mindless robots who don't have free will to think what they want. Mcmurphy's leadership is the essence of what a good influence can do on a person.
I chose the statement, "Gay marriage should be allowed by each state in the union." I strongly disagree with this statement and believe that God made man for woman and woman for man. I know that most people are more liberal and think it should be allowed. But I would hate to be living in a country that openly allows sin to be happening. The people in this world and our leaders seem to be turning away from the Lord's teachings.
In the novel, Harding is assumed being gay. He covers it up by having a very attractive wife. This confuses him and he ends up in the mental hospital. People back then tried to cover it up and now days; people are accepting it more so people are "coming out." In my opinion, they are "coming out" too strongly. They can have their own beliefs, but I do not want to live under a government that allows gays to marry.
The Bible clearly states that homosexuality is wrong. I have two quotes that support this.
"If a man lies with a man as one lies with a woman, both of them have done what is detestable. They must be put to death; their blood will be on their own heads."
-Leviticus 20:13
According to God this quote basically says that if you commit sexual acts with same gender, you shall be put to death.
"Do you not know that the wicked will not inherit the kingdom of God? Do not be deceived: Neither the sexually immoral nor idolaters nor adulterers nor male prostitutes nor homosexual offenders nor thieves nor greedy nor drunkards nor slanderers nor swindlers will inherit the kingdom of God."-1Corinthians 6:9-10
This quote is basically saying that homosexuals, as well as other sinful people, will not enter the kingdom of God. I believe that they can enter God's Kingdom one day if they repent and change their ways. I believe the entire Bible to be the truth, so there is no excuse for allowing what is wrong and calling it acceptable.
“The sixties was the worst decade in the history of the United States”
I definitely don’t think that the 60's was the worst decade. I think that in some ways, each decade can be considered the worst decade. The 60's were a very experimental decade with drugs but also with their beliefs and philosophies. People did a lot of drugs but I don’t think they necessarily knew the negative effects of the drugs. There are probably things that we do today that future generations will think are bad also.
I wasn’t alive in the 60's but I believe that people and events from that decade still affect us. Many great bands were around in the 60's including the Beach Boys, the Beatles, and the Rolling Stones. Also artists like Jimi Hendrix and Janis Joplin were huge in the 60's. I don’t think game like Rock Band and Guitar Hero would be so popular with teens if it weren’t for these artists. Many classic movies were also made in this decade like To Kill a Mockingbird, West Side Story, The Music Man, and The Sound of Music. Movies like The Graduate, Planet of the Apes, and The Pink Panther have even been remade from the original movies from the 60's.
In our book, we have learned about the cruel and inhuman treatment of the patients on Nurse Ratched’s ward. The nurses and workers have taken away most of their freedom and have brainwashed the men, grooming them for life in society. I believe that we have learned how to improve our views on mental hospitals and the treatment of mental wards since the 60's. People have now learned how to better prepare patients to live their own life. Mr. C’s dad is one of these people that has the patience and compassion to help these people out. I think we have come a long way in helping people with mental illnesses. Today, people have a much better chance of recovery.
“The Haight is just a place; the '60s was a spirit” - Ken Kesey. I liked this quote first of all because it was said by the author of Cuckoo’s Nest. I also liked it because I think it has a good meaning. Haight is referring to the Haight-Ashbury district in San Francisco. In the 60's it was a hot spot for hippies. It had the reputation of being the center of illegal drugs in the U.S. The quote also says that the Haight is just a place; meaning its just like any other place in the world. But the 60's was a spirit, meaning it will live on forever.
"All people are "crazy" to some extent"
Who can really say what crazy is? If you look up the definition it gives you a lot of choices to pick from: mentally deranged; insane; enthusiastic, eager, unusual, weak. So what makes a person crazy. You may look at someone in the hallways and say "oh that person is crazy." Are they crazy because they are handicapped or just crazy because they enjoy life and don't care what people think about them. I found a quote that has no author but i really like it- "You're not crazy, you're going sane in a crazy world!" No one is perfect in this world. We all have our crazy moments: with your friends. listening to music, or at a football game. I think people just need to let loose and have a little fun every once in awhile. Calvin Klein stated "I'm crazy, and I don't pretend to be anything else." Don't care what people will think about you, be yourself. What makes these people in the Novel crazy? Some of the guys like Billy Babbit don't seem "crazy" to me. He only has a stuttering problem. Does that make him crazy? "You know, a long time ago being crazy meant something. Nowadays everybody's crazy."
-Charles Manson. I think the people who act a littler "crazier" have more fun in life, and isn't that what life's about?
This quote that all people are crazy is very true I beleive. For me, I go crazy over cars. I love everything about cars, and u can do so many things to cars. When I am older I hope to know most if not everything there is to know about cars. If people dont like cars and dont want anything to do with them I think that they are crazy. Cars are used so much in everybodies life, if it wasnt for cars/truck there wouldnt be clothes shipped over because there wouldnt be a way to deliver them anywhere. If there werent any trucks to deliver, the only foods we would have would be the foods we can grow out of the ground.
The novel is all about crazy people, that is why they are in the ward. In the novel people beleive they are in fog so they can escape their life for a couple hours. Its crazy that the nurse controls the patients in the ward even though she knows its wrong, she controls their release dates, and what they do at every moment of everyday, they dont do anything for themselves.
“You know the world is going crazy when the best rapper is a white guy, the best golfer is a black guy, the tallest guy in the NBA is Chinese, the Swiss hold the America's Cup, France is accusing the U.S. of arrogance, Germany doesn't want to go to war, and the three most powerful men in America are named 'Bush', 'Dick', and 'Colon.' Need I say more?”
-Chris Rock
I like this quote because it is true and it lists everything that is considered crazy about the U.S., and they are all true.
"One can learn alot from a hippy; from a farmer; from a wrestler; from a drug-experimenter"
I agree with this statement because you can sit and listen to their point of view and know that what they are telling you is the truth. They can tell you what it is like, how times were, and how hard life is. If you weren't there, you can't really learn/experience what it was like, but you can get a main idea by listening to people. In my time, I have heard alot of stories about life on the farm by my grandmother. She has told me story about working with cows and chickens, told me about times walking to school in the dead of winter and what a struggle that was, and about the fun times her and her siblings had on that farm. And when we go to visit the farm she grew up that I can imagine what life was like for her. I heard stories from my grandfather about living and growing up in the Big Cities in his times and how they differ from now. I've heard about his buddies doing drugs and drinking alcohol and what is was like when he was around them.
For the novel, I think Kesey is trying to get us to see what its like through someone else's eyes, live life in their shoes, and experience being them for awhile and see what you can come out of it. While reading this I can understand the Chief is a big fellow who has seen alot in his day and is quite because he might be afraid to speak out for people might make fun of him. It makes you wonder what all he has seen that he isn't speaking about. And with McMurphy, you have heard what he has done, can learn about what is wrong and right from what he does, and can fell for the guy. Obviously he isn't "insane/crazy", just wants to get out of work. I'm pretty sure any hippy, farm, wrestler, and drug-experimenter could tell you at least of a couple times that he didn't want to work. I believe everyone could.
I have never in my life learned anything from any man who agreed with me. - Dudley Field Malone
I have choosen that quote because you can't learn for anyone who agrees with you. You guys think the same thing. But if you talk with someone who is completely opposite of you then, you will be able to learn something and tell other people what you know.
I chose the quote, "All people are 'crazy' to some extent". I believe this is true. Everyone has their own little habits or "pet peeves". Everyone has something that they like and admire more than anything in the world that other's may think is odd or abnormal. Even though people think what they will, they still love the thing they're crazy for regardless. I'm crazy about golf. I wish the weather would be nice everyday and that I could go out and golf everyday. If golf is on, I'll probably watch it. Preferably watching Tiger Woods though. A lot of people say that golf is one of the most boring sports there is. Even though people think that, I still love the game.
In the novel, everybody is literally crazy to some extent. All of them have something about them that makes them crazy. For most, it isn't the crazy that they're serial killers or anything. It's just that they have social problems or disorders that make them not able to be in the "outside world". Billy Bibbit is crazy because he was never able to grow up. He acts childish because that's what he knows. He hasn't been exposed to "normality". And when he had the opportunity his mother wouldn't let him experience that feeling. A man in the Disturbed ward thinks he plays for the Cleveland Browns and is recovering from an injury. He's been at the hospital for over 8 years! And yet, he still thinks that he'll be able to play once his "injury" heals. He also tackles nurses that walk by. Everyone there has their own type of crazy to them. Each one is different and unique.
"Insane people are always sure that they are fine. It is only the sane people who are willing to admit that they are crazy."
-Nora Ephron.
This quote is very interesting to me because what if an insane person admits that they are crazy. Does that mean that they are sane? If one can admit that they are crazy to some extent, it may make them comfortable with being that way. If one is confident that they are fine but other's think differently, does that make one feel worse about it? Being confident in one's beliefs is crucial in life. But some morals and/or beliefs aren't socially acceptable sometimes...
MELISSA BENDIXEN.
All people are "crazy" to some extent.
FAMOUS QUOTES.
"A question that sometimes drives me hazy, am I or are the others crazy?"- Albert Einstein
"Live life fully while you're here. Experience everything. Take care of yourself and your friends. Have fun, be CRAZY, be weird. Go out and screw up! You're going to anyway, so you might as well enjoy the process. Take the opportunity to learn from your mistakes: find the cause of your problem and eliminate it. Don;t try to be perfect; just be an excellent example of being human."- Anthony Robbins
MY LIFE.
There are many different types of crazy. There's the fun, enthusiastic crazy. There's the insane, mentally deranged crazy. And there's the unusual and weak crazy. Everybody IS crazy to some extent whether we want to admit it or not. But whatever the case may be, don't listen to what other people have to say about it. Be yourself as Anthony Robbins said and love everything you do. The people who try to bring you down are either jealous they're not as crazy as you or they are too scared to let people see they have a crazy side too. Doing/saying crazy things brings laughter and fun into your life, so let it out.
THE NOVEL.
I think McMurphy is crazy, but a different type of crazy than the rest. McMurphy is a fun crazy. He's always trying to get people to laugh and have some fun in the hell of a situation they're in. Harding, Bibbit, and most of the other acutes I believe are crazy simply because they WANT to be in that hospital. I'm sure they would consider me crazy to think otherwise. If those men are crazy, it's for a reason different than the one for why they're in the ward. It's not their fault people in their lives shut them down and the society didn't accept them. They may be different but that's never a reason to bring someone down. I think if they got out into a different crowd, they'd beable to be the crazy they want to be and not the crazy people label them to be.
I chose number 25 "One can learn a lot from a hippy; from a farmer; from a wrestler; from a drug-experimentor."
I agree with this completely because we learn through mistakes we have made ourselves or someone like a drug-experimentor has made. If people had time to listen to what everyone had to say instead of being racist or prejudice the world would be a lot more knowlegable. People choose to be stubborn and say things like "dont listen to that guy he's a dumb farmer." Thats just the american way though to make people feel smaller about themselves. If people weren't so stubborn they might find out that even the people they think of as screwups or druggies in our society have some knowledgable things to say. I think by Kesey writing this book that he has opened my eyes and I have not been prejudging people as much as I used to and feel that I have become a better person.
I believe the best place for people who have mental illnesses is not in an institution. I chose this statement because I can relate to it in my life and in this novel.
I have a cousin Patricia has Wolf Hirschhorn syndrome, which is a deletion of chromosome 4. She can understand what is going on around her for the most part. She can’t talk much but very little. Patricia is a petite girl and is now 19 years old. She has gone to school like all the other kids. She went to high school and they helped her with talking, manners, and communicating with other people. I believe it was good for Patricia to interact with people of her own age. This past spring she graduated with her class and she was so happy! She walked up the stage just clapping her hands high in the air congratulating herself for her accomplishment. Any sane person should see that she does deserve to be apart of society. What did she do to not be apart of it? Patricia is a person that makes people smile and helps as much as she can with everyday things.
Patricia is in many ways like the patients in the Cuckoos Nest: childish, and different. I believe people do have a heart to be kind to people like Cheswick. I believe there should not be mental institutions because all of those patients deserve a chance at society. Just because these people are different does not mean they should be banned from society. If one has a mental illness and can do something about it then go to a psychiatrist. Some people did not even get a choice to be the ward. I believe this is due to most of their childhood.
“We do not have to visit a madhouse to find disordered minds; our planet is the mental institution of the universe.” –Johann Wolfgang von Goethe
This quote tells me that you don’t need to go to a mental institution to see ‘different’ people. There are different people all around you. I definitely agree with what this quote reads.
"The best place for people who have mental illnesses is in an institution."
I completely disagree with this statement. Yes, people who are a danger to others or themselves should be involved with medical help and support. And yes, people who have mental illnesses can live a very normal life. Many people with ongoing mental illnesses such as depression, bipolar disorder, and OCD can and do lead very regular lives. The fact is that you CAN live with a mental disorder, most people who have them are forced to; but that doesn't mean that life is over for you. Treatment and recovery is possible. The trick is learning how do deal and cope with a mental disorder in a healthy way. Learning to live with your situation is the goal and once you have achieved that they say you are in 'recovery.' However recovery is a broad term, because some people believe that recovery is the state of being 'fixed' or 'cured' of a mental illness. Although in reality, recovery is the extended process at which you become mentally well, or mentally stronger and more able to cope with your disorder.
The idea that the best place for people with mental illnesses is NOT in an institution can be backed up by my life. For example, I know of multiple people who have suffered a mental disorder. They have gone to treatment in an inpatient institution and have discharged with a better grip on their life and their ability to cope with their problem. Even more personal, I personally went to treatment over the summer to get a grip on myself and my mental disorder. It helped me gain what I needed and the ammunition to keep working toward recovery. The reality is that your never completely free of a mental disorder, it will hang with you the rest of your life. All that you can do, and I can do, is try to prevent disordered behaviors from occurring but that will not always be the case, because recover is about two steps forward and one step back, there is no cookie cutter way for everyone to recover and no pace or time that recovery is due. Recovery is ongoing and because of that you cannot spend your life in an institution, you must go on with your life because the more normalized you can get your life, the easier it will be to get back on track and recover.
In the novel, I think that it also very much applies because 1) the medical psychology practices of that time period were much more primitive than they are today. 2) in Cuckoo's Nest, the patients are kept longer than is necessary. By staying too long in an institution you may get too comfortable with how things are going and stuck in a rut. Mental institutions are not meant to be a comfortable place, they are to an extent, but their goal is to push you to plow through what you have been to afraid to in the past, it's a time of enlightenment, and that's not always easy; it rarely is.
I love quotes to explain life and emotions I'm dealing with. They make me feel more understood and less alone. Here are some of my favorites:
"Recovery is a process, not an event."
-unknown source
"When there is no enemy within, the enemies outside cannot hurt you."
-African Proverb
"Let the world know you as you are, not as you think you should be."
-unknown source
"If I accept you as you are, I will make you worse; however, if I treat you as though you are what you are capable of becoming, I help you become that."

#14. “America forces men to act like, well, men.”
Life-
I believe that this is statement is absolutely correct. I see it in my own home and with the people around me. My brother and my boyfriend are two classic examples of people I know that are more emotional than any girl I have seen. My brother isn’t one to be in sports and lifting heavy weights. He would rather stay home and play on the computer and not really do anything, but gets emotional fast. My parents discipline my brother when he does cry because it isn’t what a boy should be doing, but if it was one of us girl’s crying we would be soothed. Same with my boyfriend, he can lift weights and do many things “men” do but he is also very creative. He likes to draw, but if you say something that may hurt him he will cry, but he will beat himself down because a man shouldn’t cry.
Novel-
The men in the novel are basically told to be a man. For example Harding he would like to make beautiful pictures with his hands and prance around happy. Harding knows that he can’t be who he wants to be because he has to be a “man”. Everyone in the novel are basically “better” if they can be a man and suck it up and be like everyone else around them.
Quotes-
“Take courage and be men, O Philistines, or you will become slaves to the Hebrews, as they have been slaves to you; therefore, be men and fight.” 1 Samuel 4:9
“Historically, society has told us that crying should be left to the fairer sex. Ever since men were little boys, they have been told that strong men don't cry.” http://www.encyclopedia.com/doc/1G1-21246884.html
I choose the statement number 4, ‘Self-esteem is not very important in life.’ The reason why I choose this statement is because I think it is very important to a person. Self-esteem is a favorable impression of oneself or self-respect, just plain respect for you. Self-esteem plays in my personal life well as the people around me. Self-esteem also plays a big role in our novel as well.
Life: In my life self-esteem has gotten me this far. I would have to thank my father for that. I was put down and rejected many times in the past 6-7 years. A long time ago, I started to give up on everything I do; I didn’t try hard in school and practices; I didn’t really care. My dad had to leave for weeks or months at a time for his job in the military, it was really hard to live with out him because he would always read to us at night and watch the Three Stooges almost every night. This is when I was a 4th grader my brother Tony was kindergarten, I had to cook supper for me and Tony a few nights because my mom wasn’t home, my dad would call asking why I was making supper and I just said “because mom isn’t here”. My mom couldn’t make it to my games in middle school; I would stay up and wait for her to come home so I could tell her all about it. She never showed. My dad eventually had to tell me to go to bed. I was and still am put down by her. I didn’t have any self-respect, if she didn’t respect me why should I respect my self. My dad boosted my self-esteem by being there for me. He is a good example of somebody who has great self-esteem.
Book: In our book, the patients in the institution do not have any self-esteem. They are rejected from society. Why should they respect themselves if others or society doesn’t respect them back. Their childhood could play a big part in why they don’t have self-esteem. But with the right treatment they could help raise their self esteem and be back and belong in society.
Quotes: I couldn’t decide on one quote, so I chose two.
- "If I am not for myself, who will be?" Pirke Avoth
This is a very true statement, one I agree because who are you really if you aren’t your self? Are you being true to you and the ones around you? Do people like you for who you’re trying to be, or would they accept you more if you are yourself? I think everyone should be themselves in ever situation no matter what, the true self in you will show, and you don’t want it to be surprising to others, you want them to know who you are. Don’t try to be like anyone else but yourself.
-"You yourself, as much as anybody in the entire universe, deserve your love & affection." Buddha
If you don’t have your own love and affection who else would? You need to respect yourself, so others can respect you. If you don’t respect yourself, you may think others don’t, but in reality they do. You need to find who you are, and where you belong will fall into place. Respecting yourself goes a long way.
I believe that all people are crazy to some extent. But what does being crazy mean? Everyone has a different opinion of what makes you crazy. In my life, I see that everyone is in some way. I am crazy about some things like music and running. Without music, I do not think I would be who I am today. I might also be crazy because of some of the things I do. Hot air ballooning is probably considered crazy to a lot of people, and maybe running is to. Often, people do not understand why running can be fun. There are many things that someone could be crazy about. You could be crazy about somebody, or you could be crazy for a certain food, activity, or hobby, but everyone has to be crazy to some extent.
In the novel, every person on the ward is supposed to be crazy because they are in a mental ward, but really I believe the crazy ones are the staff, especially Nurse Ratched. She thinks all of the men are crazy even though I believe the way she is running the ward is making them crazy and not helping their conditions at all. When McMurphy comes to the ward, he sees that the men are not really crazy. He helps them to realize they are not really crazy like they think they are in many ways. When he starts rebelling against Nurse Ratched, they are seeing something completely new and it opens their eyes. At first they do not know what to think, but they get used to it and start going along with it. Eventually, I think, they will also realize that Nurse Ratched has been tricking them all along and they are better off somewhere where she is not in control.
“A question that sometimes drives me hazy: am I or are the others crazy?” Albert Einstein
“You have to go on and be crazy. Craziness is like heaven.” Jimi Hendrix
“If you're going to be crazy, you have to get paid for it or else you're going to be locked up.” Hunter S. Thompson
“In other words, I wouldn't like to be an actor if I could only be real. I like to get wild, behaviorally wild, and it's crazy to think of any form where it's just one way.” Jack Nicholson
Self-esteem is not very important in life.
Life:
I strongly disagree with this statement. I think that self-esteem is one of the most important qualities a person should have. Self-esteem helps me get through friendships, relationships, and school. Having self-esteem helps me get up in the morning and go to school and be able to feel good about myself. It also helps me make friends with someone I just met. In school self-esteem helps you to get good grades and have confidence while taking tests. I believe I have a high self-esteem and it helps me to be a better person.
Quote:
"To wish you were someone else is to waste the person you are."
-Unknown author
This quote is very true because I think everyone should have self-esteem and be happy with who they are. Everyone was made differently for a reason and if everyone wanted to be the same the world would be boring. By trying to be someone else you are truly wasting the personality you were given. Having high self-esteem gives you the ability to not care what other people think of you. This is one of the best attitudes to have in life because you are living your life how you want to and not how someone else wants you to.
Novel:
In the novel, all the patients have low self-esteem except Mc Murphy. The Nurse has broke down these men so much that they all have a low self-esteem. I like how Mc Murphy has come in and is trying to help the other patients build their self-esteem. I see Chief's self-esteem growing slowly but surely with Mc Murphy's help. Having Mc Murphy there to build Chief’s self-esteem has allowed him to finally after all these years be able to talk to someone. Mc Murphy also helped Cheswick build self-esteem to stand up for him and the other patients in the therapeutic meeting. I think by the end of the novel Mc Murphy will have helped all the patients grow and build self-esteem that they can use in the outside world.
"Influencing other people is something everyone should try to do."
MY LIFE:I strongly believe in this because I feel like everyone has a certain quality to themselves that they should share. My family does foster care and i have learnt there is something special about every single person. Weither you know what your quality is or not, you should "shine". Even if you dont like someone or shun them for something, they still have something to say that could influence someone else. If you feel like you dont influence someone else you do. Little kids look up to older people, weither they know it or not. It isnt hard to give a person your time, just to listen, sometimes thats all someone needs, and that could eaisly influence them right off the bat. My favorite song is "something to say" by Matthew West, because it is so true. On his album cover he gives a huge list of people that have something to say, including the unborn baby. If babies have something to say then they can influence other people around them. It is important to give everyone a chance because you really never know what that person has to say. It could change your life forever. Give everyone a chance to influence you because you dont know what they have to say. Dont shun people because of what they say because it could change your out look on life.
THE NOVEL: I think this novel does a great job at showing that one person can influence anyone. McMurphy is the "influencer" he can even make Chief "not be deaf" anymore. McMurphy does a great job at getting to know everyone else, and then he is himself and it helps the other clients come out of their "shell" if you are being yourself and people shun you, then it should not bother who you are. You have something to say and it could influence what other people do or think about themselves. You never really know who is watching you.
QUOTE:"If you’re living,
If you’re breathing,
You got something to say."
It is lyrics to "Something to say." but I strongly believe that it gets the point across to what I am trying saying. If you are here then there is a reason that you are here. God put you here to influence others. If you think that you are here just to be here, then maybe you are just going through the motions and you dont realize that someone is watching you everyday. Some high schoolers dont realize how important they are, but elementary kids talk all the time about how they want to be like ... Most of the ...'s dont even know that that little kid is watching them all the time. Sometimes we lose track of who we really are and we need to step back and remember that we have something to say that could influence the next person in line.
Emily Gardner pd7
I chose the statement; All people are “crazy” to some extent. I totally agree with this statement because everyone is “crazy” in their own way. So what is the definition of crazy? Not everyone thinks alike; so one person’s opinion of crazy may not be the same as yours. Being “crazy” could mean insane, but could also mean being different. The definition of crazy is different every time it is used.
The novel is pretty much about being people who are “crazy”. The thing is that most of the patients aren’t even “crazy”. They just don’t think they have anything in common with the rest of society. So they feel like they are “crazy”. Being in that ward in my opinion is making the patients crazier. Being stuck on the ward with Nurse Ratched is not helping at all. When the patients are there I wonder if being conformed is ok with them? Do they like it because they start to feel like they are not the only “crazy” ones? When McMurphy comes he realizes that they are not crazy. He also feels that being here is making them crazy. He starts to show the patients that they are not crazy, that it is Ms. Ratched that is making them feel that way.
Yes I know I am crazy. I am crazy about Efron, McDreamy, and Miley. But am I crazy if I am not crazy about something else? I don’t think so. It’s just that people have different ideas of crazy. You could be crazy about many things; family, friends, movies, TV shows, singers, books, food. I found a couple of quotes that I believe are true.
“Insane people are always sure that they are fine. It is only the sane people who are willing to admit that they are crazy.”
Nora Ephron
“What sane person could live in this world and not be crazy?”
Ursula K. LeGuin
I agree with these because you have to be able to call yourself crazy. If admit that you are crazy, you are crazy. Not everyone can be sane. It is impossible to be sane. No matter how hard you may try not to be…everyone is crazy.
I chose to write about number 19. "Gay marriage should be allowed by each state in the union." Although personally I disagree with the idea of being attracted to someone of the same gender, I don’t think it is my choice or the government's choice to make. I know one of two people who are gay and they are good people. I don’t believe they should be treated any different then people who aren't gay. They are human just like you and me. They should be allowed to marry the man or woman they love.
I think Harding who is implied to be gay shouldn’t be told or implied that his sexual preference is wrong. He was either born being attracted to men or he simply chose to be, either way it’s his life. I think Nurse R. frowns upon anything that is out of the ordinary. This is why Harding is picked on by her. She wants him to be the conformed citizen, and a normal citizen wouldn’t like people of the same gender. They would be the typical man and woman.
“We don't want to be labeled, because being gay or black or a rapper or a redneck or alternative has only separated us, and those are labels previous generations have come up with, not us. We need to embrace our differences, not focus on them.”-anonymous
I think this quote is very true. It sais that no matter what group you fit into you shouldn't be labeled as the same as every other person in that group.
Just because someone is gay doesn’t mean he or she is the stereotypical gay. Someone who acts like the stereotypical gay isn't necessarily gay either. I think this is very important to remember. Just because you don’t agree with someone’s ideas or thoughts doesn’t give you the right to hate them. People who are gay deserve the respect of their peers and also the right to marry the person they choose.
"All people are 'crazy' to some extent."
MY LIFE: This statement pertains to my life because I agree with it. I think everyone has a crazy side. I also think if you do not have a crazy side then you are too reserved, you keep to yourself too much. Most people in society like when someone else acts crazy because then they do not feel so awkward when they decide to come out of their box. I also think that if you are not crazy at some point, then you are normal and normal people are boring and usually do not know how to have fun. Many people think crazy means like out of control, loud, obnoxious, etc. I strongly believe that everyone has their own definition of crazy and they can believe and do what they want as long as they have fun.
THE NOVEL: This statement definately pertains to the novel as well. With the setting in a mental hospital, most people would believe that all the patients are crazy. I think they are in their own way but not crazy to the point of insanity. I think the patients that are in the right mind, know what is happening around them but don't reall process it. They all have different types of disorders but that doesn't make them crazy. I think the patients would actually be considered less crazy than Nurse Ratched, the black boys, and the other nurses. Ratched and the others try their hardest to keep the patients in the hospital, what kind of crazy people would do that? They scare the patients out of going back into the real world when they should be encouraging them to do so.
QUOTE: "Insane people are always sure that they are fine. It is only the sane people who are willing to admit that they are crazy" (thinkexist.com, Nora Ephron quotes). This quote definately fits. If you think you're not crazy then you gotta be insane, because everyone has to have a little crazyness in them. Where would this world be if there was nothing crazy? I would hate to live in that world. It woulg be so boring.
"The more rules, the better."
I chose this because of many things. One of which is that, having rules though good, is not always the answer. Clearly having rules isnt bad, but sometimes its not "good". Some rules such as wear your seat belts-- good rule. Others such as dont wear high heels-- bad rule. (It's a law in a town in Georgia because some lady sued the city after getting her heel stuck in a grat) Some some rules, good, some bad. This relates to me becaus rules dont have to come by law, they can come by parents, which in a way is law. But some rules arnt good, like come home right after school... who is that protecting or doing anything good?
The book is full of rules. And most of them are rediculous. I feel bad for the people in the book, though fake, i still feel abd. They have rules to no end. They have to do EVERYTHING they are told to do. No ifs, ans, or buts about it. They have to take meds, and tattle on people. That is terrible.
“The only limit to our realization of tomorrow will be our doubts of today.” Is a quote from FDR
It partains to this because its saying "limits" it might not be in the exact ways as rules and regulatinos but all-in-all its saing there are limits. And if you doubt today, then tomorrow will be just as bad.

"Gay marriage should be allowed by each state in the union."
I have a hard time with this statement and deciding whether it's absolutely right or wrong. I, along with many other people commenting on this issue, believe that being homosexual is something you're born with. I've been taught to believe that marriage is meant to be shared between a man and a woman, but then should a gay man or woman be forced to live without ever experiencing true love? That's where I'm torn. I just can't believe someone would be 'damned' for the way they're born. Either way, no one should be shunned or ridiculed for their sexual orientation. People are so quick to criticize when something goes against what they've been taught all their lives but everyone should be treated with the same kindness and decency we all deserve as humans. Just because you may not accept the lifestyle, doesn't mean you can't learn to accept the person.
Harding is the 'ambiguously' homosexual character in the novel. He feels threatened and protects himself by marrying an extremely attractive woman and hiding away in a mental hospital. This is quite sad because he's not able to live life to the fullest out of fear for the way society will treat him if they ever found out. I'm sure things like this still go on today because of our society's lack of acceptance.
'We cannot change anything until we accept it. Condemnation does not liberate, it oppresses.'

All people are crazy in some sense. They all have sick, twisted, or weird thoughts that they all think from time to time, but they would never admit it. Not only that but if you look further into a persons behavior, they all do something that's not exactly "normal." They have their own ticks or ways of doing things. And some will never realize it until someone points it out to them.
I personally think it's great that everyone is crazy in some sense of another, because it makes life more interesting. Even conformists are individuals in their minds and actions. You can't make a mind conform, it's too free and flowing to trap it, put a collar or tag on it and make it the same as everyone elses. People think differently about at the very least one thing. Whether it's music, life, government or something else. And if someone tries to say otherwise I'd say they are full of it.
People's minds are one of the biggest mysteries on Earth. One can't ALWAYS explain why they think that way or why they feel so strongly about something that it makes them "crazy." That itself is enough to prove that one is crazy. Say,for example, that someone mentions abortion, and somebody flips out and goes off about how it's either wrong or right, then later apologize for spazzing out and say "That topic just makes me go crazy." They are just admitting that they are crazy. Or if someone mentions that they do something different of 'weird' and they get self conscious, they are admitting to themselves that it's crazy to do it that way. Or they will think that the other person is crazy because they don't do it the way they do it. Which is crazy in itself because they are talking to themselves about how crazy it is. In which both parties are guilty of being crazy.
I chose that hate is inherent to humnan nature.
I think this because if you go up to anyone and ask them what they hate, they will respond in either a food, a class or more common a person. For example look at today's most popular t.v shows in some way or another past the pretty faces and expensive clothes it all revolves around drama filled hatred. People strive off of these shows, books and movies as a way of entertainment. Yes it's true some people are amused when they see hatred played out in front of them in their living room.
I also think that we are born to hate but to love as well. Hate is just something that is in our blood. Looking back at history most German soldiers hated the Jewish people. Why? Well it was in their heritage to blame them for their wrong doings, the easy way out.
Using the word hate is some peoples easy road to get out of a fight or to not deal with things. I am not ashamed of hating certian things like cleaning my room or doing chores. In the halls of any school you see more and more if some group of people hate a certain thing or another group of people, you tend to see that others soon to follow even if being they don't agree. Maybe just to conform and fit it.
I chose influencing other people is something everyone should try to do.
My life: I think it is important that people try their best to make a positive influence on other people's lives as much as possible. I feel that people should constantly be trying to make each other grow by complimenting them and making them feel good about their lives instead of shrinking them. I have a friend who struggles with her self esteem and has told me numerous times that she can't take her life anymore and feels that she doesn't deserve to live. So everyday I try and put forth an effort to try and make her feel good about her self. Even the smallest of compliments can make a person feel huge.
The novel: In the novel I think the most influential character is McMurphy. He is constantly trying to push the other patients out of their comfort zone. Every patient looks up to him in someway and I think that he will truly help them find a cure to some of their problems by the end of the novel. Even Chief, who hadn't spoken in years, wanted to talk to McMurphy this shows how much of an influence McMurphy truly has on them.
Quote: "You don't have to be a 'person of influence' to be influential. In fact, the most influential people in my life are probably not even aware of the things they've taught me. -Scott Adams.
I Chose: All people are "crazy" to some extent.
I agree with this statement very much. First of all, there are actual 'mentally crazy' people out there. People usually only think they're crazy, no one else. There are actually many many more types of crazy people.
One example would be people 'crazy' enough to do certain activities. For example, when someone wants to skydive, people usually respond to them by saying, "You're crazy!". Not necessarily meaning that they are messed up in the head, but that they are daring, and are trying things you would never want to try! Another way to view someone as "crazy" is that if they are outgoing. Everyone has their wild moments. I definately have those days where I just want to act "crazy", but it doesn't mean I need to be admitted into a hospital for it. Most people like to have fun, and by having fun some people would call others "crazy". You could also say that crazy means that your "crazy in love" with someone/something. The way I think of that phrase is that your head-over-heels in love with someone/something.
Again, none of these meanings would force you to be treated at a mental institute, although crazy usually is used with that situation. In the novel, "crazy" is mainly used as a mental illness. "Crazy" people are usually a little messed up in the head. They believe in things that aren't really happening (hallucinations, flashbacks, etc). Everyone is either a little crazy, or so crazy that they can't be helped. They can be harmful to society, but all they need to treatment for a little while until they're ready to be in the world with all the other "crazy" people.
So, if your "crazy wild", "crazy in love", or "crazy mentally", everyone is crazy in some ways even if some won't admit it, we all have our crazy days.
QUOTE--"Sometimes it's to your advantage for people to think you're crazy"
--Thelonious Monk.
That quote means to me that don't worry about what others are thinking, if they think you're crazy, let them. It doesn't discourage you to keep doing what you're doing.

One person can change an established, stable environment.
My life: I agree with this statement mainly for the fact of what I'm in the process of doing... the other day, Sunday, a poor lady was shopping at Hyvee, where I work, and she suffered a massive heart attack and died on the floor in Hyvee. For myself to agree with the statement, I have decided that I want, and I will change Hyvee so that they will be able to react properly to that type of situation. No one knew what to do except myself and one other lady. With agreeing with this statement, I will be able to change an established, stable environment.
The Novel: When McMurphy shows up at the hospital, he is wild and not good for the ward. He somhow contorts most the entire ward to speak out against the Big Nurse. McMurphy changes the STABLE environment at the 'perfect' ward.
"It's pretty incredible to look back 30 years to when Microsoft was starting and realize how work has been transformed." -Bill Gates. This quote is very symbolic to the statement. Bill Gates changed the world so quickly that it seems almost illogical. he changed the stable environment to a 'not so stable one' if you look at the perspective of the all the bad things created since Bill changed the world.
All people are “crazy” to some extent.
I chose this statement because it proves that nothing in existence can separate who is crazy and who is not. Craziness is only determined by another person’s opinion. Some are called crazy because they claim that they see aliens, some are called crazy for liking country music, and some are called crazy for dreaming of what they want to do in life. Crazy is just a word but how you define it is what really matters. If you find crazy in the dictionary, you will find definitions like this, “mentally deranged; demented; insane; senseless; impractical” (dictionary.com). In many cases this is true but we do not always use the word correctly when we use it in everyday life.
Crazy is often misused. We often use it lightly and carelessly, as we do with words like, “love” and “hate”. When we describe something, someone or an action of some type, if we do not agree or understand, we call it crazy. My friends call me crazy because I am not afraid or ashamed to dance in front of people. I call girls who wear heels and short skirts in the dead of winter crazy. Boys who want to risk their lives everyday are crazy. It seems that if we do not understand or agree with what others like/dislike, we consider them as crazy.
In One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest, all of the patients are convinced that they are crazy and could never get along in society. For some patients, like the “vegetables”, that may be true, but then there are other patients that could possibly get along out in the world. It would not be easy but people in the ward like Billy Bibbit, Hardling, and Chief Bromben, if they were willing to try they could live a different and maybe better life. Nurse Ratched, however, wants to convince the patients of the ward that not knowing is safer than trying, and in a way it is. You would have to be crazy to try anything. McMurphy tries to show that you have to at least try when he attempts to lift the control panel and fails. If you do not try, you will never know.
“Live life fully while you're here. Experience everything. Take care of yourself and your friends. Have fun, be crazy, be weird. Go out and screw up! You're going to anyway, so you might as well enjoy the process. Take the opportunity to learn from your mistakes: find the cause of your problem and eliminate it. Don't try to be perfect; just be an excellent example of being human.” This is a quote by Anthony Robbins, a famous writer and professional speaker. The meaning of this quote is in perfect contrast to the theme and meaning of the book One Flew Over the Cuckcoo’s Nest. While the quote encourages us to take chances, try and fail and try again, the book show the process of attempting to change human into robots.
Nurse Ratched is determined to turn the living, breathing, feeling, “crazy called” men, into cold, non-thinking robots. She wants them to play it safe in life; not take any risk and keep things exactly the way they are. Then McMurphy shows up and begins to teach the men how to be a little rebellious and break a few rules. He wants to hear laughter and chaos and freedom. Nurse Ratchet is repulsed by the thought of it. She considers everything that is not her way crazy. It is true that crazy can be defined in words, but the true meaning of the word is based on the emotion and opinion of the person.

I chose the statement "All people are 'crazy' to some extent."
That statement applies to my life because everyone i know, including me, is "crazy" in their own little way. People wouldn't be nearly as fun to be around, or nearly as interesting if they weren't crazy.
The statement appleis to the novel because if everyone wasn't crazy, we'd all be "robots" succumbing to the "big Combine" which is what Cheif thinks is happening in the novel. The universe would be perfect, there'd be no crimes, people'd help the government, there'd be absolutely no passion, and that world sounds absolutely boring and I wouldn't want to be apart of it. No passion equals zhombies in my opinion.
The famous quote I chose was said by Giuseppe Ghiaroni, "Everybody is crazy. The secret consists of finding the right pavilion."
One person can change an established, stable environment.
I agree with this statement. I think in other words it means one person can change conformity. In life, students come to school (which is an established, stable environment) and act obnoxious. Other kids follow their lead and start to act the same way. A quiet room of studious teens can turn into a room with screaming kids acting like monkeys. Another example is when a team is prepping for a game and one teammate plays around. Then the intensity or focus is lost the team becomes unstable. That one single person changed the whole warm-up. It could happen anywhere.
In the novel, McMurphy comes to the ward and shows the other men there are other options then always following the rules Nurse Ratched made. He proves to them that in their stable environment there is fun and it doesn’t have to be so boring. He changes the boring ward into a fun area with gambling, games, and no work. They change from doing their every day chores to watching the game. Their views change because of his input.
Martin Luther King Jr. was a famous man who changed everyone’s life. America thought their country was an established, stable environment. The Blacks would just go on their way sitting in the back of the bus, drinking out of water fountains that were not as good as the “White water fountains”, and living in run down homes. King and many other Civil Rights Leaders changed how Blacks thought by voicing their opinions. After his speech Blacks rebelled and didn’t follow the separation rules that their environment wanted. He changed their establishment and spoke up because he didn’t believe it was right. He said, “Our lives begin to end the day we become silent about things that matter.” I love this quote because I think that the men in the ward were silent and didn’t ever speak up if they didn’t like anything until McMurphy came. In a way McMurphy is like their Martin Luther King Jr., he is changing the way the patients live just like King changed the way the Blacks lived.
Self-esteem is not very important in life.
This statement can be either a right or a wrong one. It all depends on the point of view of the person that is reading it. It is an inaccurate statement to me, though. A person's self-esteem can completely affect how the live their lifes. If a person as a good self-esteem than they probably love living. If a person is always teased or picked on then they might not like living so much and want to die. I know that in my life if somebody is picking on me or teasing me or talking about me behind my back I just want to hit them or leave so I don't have to be near them. In the novel, the patients are trying to get better but Nurse Ratched is just putting them down and hurting their self-esteem's by have the group meetings(pecking party). She also puts them down by have them write down in her log book and "ratting" somebody out on something that they did wrong, or what they think is wrong. By doing this, she is making them feel worse than they already do. She is also getting them to have them feel like them is no hope for them to get better. If the patients never get better they also will never get their self-esteem's up. I think that Nurse Ratched's goal in life is to have her "patients" feel as bad as she does. She probably feels bad about her "chest" size. She tries to conseal it but she can't. She wants them to feel just as bad as she does because no matter what she does she will never get rid of her problem. "Nothing profits more than self-esteem, grounded on what is just and right." -John Milton. This quote is true. If something is funny to you it might not be funny to somebody else. It all depends on your own point of view.
Justin Gabbert
The statement I chose was "Influencing other people is something everyone should try to do". The reason I decided to pick this statement is because it is something that I truely believe in. This statement referes to me, the novel, and other people throughout the world.
Everyone is influenced by another at some point in there life. In fact people influence others everyday without even trying. When i was a freshman, I considered the seniors to be the kings of the world, and i was a simple pesant. Whatever the seniors did I thought I had to do as well. It didn't matter what it was or even if it was immoral. They influenced me without me even being aware of it. I just did whatever they told me to do. There are nothing but good influences, because even if something bad happens due to the actions of someone else it just shows someone how not to do that. The seniors allways looked after me for no reason, why; I believe it was because that is what the seniors before them did as well. Everyone is looking for a place to belong, and we get to that place do to the influence of others.
The main sorce of influence in the novel is McMurphy. He gives the patients hope and life. He is this vile man that is rude and cruel. Yet we find ourselves cheering for this character. We believe that he means good in his heart but in order to do something right, he must act uncivilized. There is a scene in the novel where McMurphy tries to move something unmovable. He ends up cutting himself trying to move this massive object and for a split second, all the patients believed he could. McMurphy gave hope and a message of life for the patients that he barely knows. Due to the power of influence, people can be capable of just about anything. We fight to make our way in this world, all because that is what the people before us did. We fight for the world of tomorrow, because we are influenced to succeed and prove how important we are to the world.
The quote I thought best fit for this topic is, "We all take different paths in life, but no matter where we go, we take a little of each other everywhere."
The statement that i chose to do is "self esteem is not very important". I completely disagree with this statement. To me self esteem is one of the most important factors that influence one's life. Many people's lives are ruined because they have low self esteem and they allow themselves to think that they aren't worth anything better. Self esteem is aquired or lost by your peers and family encouranging or discouraging you in the things you do or don't do. In my life I have gone through both stages of low and high self esteem. I had lower self esteem in middle school when I went to a different school and I was put down and made to feel like I did not have a choice about how to act. I felt this way because when i tried to be different i was made fun of and people talked bad about me behind my back.
In the novel the we are shown that self esteem is very important when cheswick feels so important when he has McMurphy supporting him and when he loses that support he gets depressed and gives up on everything and commits suicide.
A third point that helps me to put self esteem as a more important part of life is that others have thought about it as well. A quote from the founder of the forth largest religion in the world, Buddhism, is "You yourself, as much as anybody in the entire universe, deserve your love and affection" as well as "The mind is everything. What you think you become.” And the Buddha was not the only person to believe in this self importance. A quote from Confucius that has this sense of self importance would be, "Respect yourself and others will respect you." I think that all three of these quotes say that thinking well of yourself is important and that if you think well of yourself will help others think well of you as well... as long as you don't develope an obnoxious ego. haha
The quote I picked is number two. "All people are "crazy" to some extent." I totally agree with this statement. For example, if you are with your friends and are doing something crazy like playing on the playground at the park this could be considered crazy. Everyone interprets crazy a little differently, but I think being crazy is a good thing. It shows we are human and can be crazy and fun sometimes. This relates to my life when I'm with my friends just having a good time. If you like something that someone else doesn't, then they might say you are crazy. Everyone thinks someone else is crazy at some point which is human and normal.
This relates to the novel in that the patients are considered "crazy" and "abnormal" by Nurse Ratched. I think she puts them down and gives them the idea that they couldn't be outside the ward because they are too crazy. I don't think they are any different than us. Just because they have a mental illness doesn't make them anymore crazy then us. There are people that go to our school who have mental illnesses and they do fine. As long as the patients in the novel were willing to try, they could survive outside the ward.
"What sane person could live in this world and not be crazy?"
-Ursula K. LeGuin
The statement I chose was "One can learn a lot from a hippy; from a farmer; from a wrestler; from a drug-experimenter."
The reason i chose this particular one is because it is true. You could learn so much from any one of these types of people because they have been through or experimented things that none of us have. For example a drug experimenter would know a lot more about a certain type of drug than anyone else. Why? Because they have had the first hand experiences with the drug that we have not had. Unlike you who would hopefully would never do such a thing? Even a hippie could teach you a thing or two. My grandpa was a hippie back in his day and still is. He has long hair always in a ponytail and a tattoo of a unicorn on his left arm. He tells me stories from back in the day when it was cool to be a hippie. Saying how all he used to do was live the life he wanted and he says he is still doing it. That may sound weird to most people because of our stereo typical look at old people. Most people think of old people as grumpy and wrinkly with there pants hiked up to there chest.
Anyone can learn something from anybody if they just listen. Every person in the world has had different experiences than each other also different views on certain subjects like this one. I bet Chief Bromben never thought he would learn anything from that big, loud, red headed freak named McMurphy. But he did he learned how to almost control his fog. he feels less scared and worried now that he is there. I think that McMurphy will learn something from the Chief as well.
"Discipline is absolutely necessary in most settings"
I dont necessarily agree with this statement. Parents should show their kids some discipline because it teaches them a lesson and shows them that they care. Without discipline, people would go crazy and have no control. I appreciate my parents having some discipline in my life or else I wouldn't be the considerate person that I am today. Without discipline, I'd think that all the wrong doings that I have done would be okay to do and its not. Parents or authority should have discipline but how much control should authority have? If parents or other authority are too strict kids or other people being controlled would feel rebellious because they feel they’ve being tied down for so long.
In the book, Nurse Ratched obviously has taken a lot of control towards the patients but not all of it is healthy for them. They want to experience the world just as much as normal people do but Nurse Ratched tries to scare them and show them that the outside world is scary and hopeless. The patients should be able to do as much as they can to feel alive and well. McMurphy is someone who's definitely changed the opinion's on life to the patients. He's helped Bromden feel like he's wanted and that he should speak his mind. McMurphy has also shown the patients that the outside world is not so bad. McMurphy seems to be more fun and outgoing because he's NOT following most of the discipline. Discipline should be held but shouldn't be as strict as how Ratched upholds it. The patients should have limitations but not as many as they have.
Marie Chapian's quote, "Lack of discipline leads to frustration and self-loathing" shows, I think, that she is trying to say that without discipline, one can go crazy and be out of control BUT with too much discipline there is too much control and is not good either.
I chose the quote (#2) "All people are 'crazy' to some extent" I definately agree with this. I also think that this statement is very vague..almost too vague. "Crazy" is in quotations..so they're not really being very specific. People can be considered "crazy" for basicalley anything. You could be "crazy" because you jumped off a bridge, or for just getting your toungue pierced. You could be "crazy" about someone, or because you have a mental illness. Everyone is "crazy" in their own way. It also shows you alot about that person.
In the novel the patients are considered "crazy". I think that keeping some of those patients in the ward just makes them worse. Just becuase they aren't like us..doesnt mean they're not "crazy" like us. I think if some of these patients were willing to try..they could try living in this "crazy" world with us.
“Show me a sane man and I will cure him for you.”
-Carl Gustav Jung
This quote is basically saying that noone should not be "crazy". Being "crazy" shows you what kind of person you are.
The statement i chose was number 14. “America forces men to act like, well, men”. I think this statement is true because men are supposed to be the leaders in their own way. And men are supposed to do what’s right all the time, and if they don’t they might be looked at as someone different, or unimportant. Or like when someone gets hurt doing something and say he starts to cry because it hurts so badly, he might get picked on because “he is not MAN enough”.
I can relate to this because when I broke my collarbone in 5th grade, and the day after I went to school and kept complaining about how badly it hurt, and my classmates were making fun of me because I was acting tough enough and they picked on me till my collarbone healed. And kind of like Cheswick from the book because he acts like he is a young child and is treated differently among the other patients because of how he acts. He is constantly told to shut up when he repeats himself like a young child when he speaks. This statement I chose also reminds me of a little kid named Alex. Every Sunday my family and I go to their friend’s house to watch football. Alex’s father expects him to be a man about every situation. Well one Sunday when we were over their, Alex was getting picked on, and pushed around over his weight. He tried to stand up for himself but he didn’t know what to do, and they would not stop so he started to cry. I went in side and told his father about what just happened, and his father just started laughing and he to started picking on Alex, and was calling him a “wimp” and a “cry baby” and said to him “when are u going to learn to man up?” and Alex shrugged his shoulders and his dad said “Unbelievable”, and walked away upset. I could not believe that a seven year old was already expected to act like a grown adult. "If a man does his best, what else is there?" - General George S. Patton (1885-1945). What I think this quote means is that if a man tries his best at something, than that is the best we will get because no man is perfect and will not always act like a man when expected.
I picked number 7. hate is inherent to human nature. I believe this statement is true. No matter who you are there is some level of hate in you whether it is big or small it is there. Even though we don’t like to admit it there is someone or something that you don’t like you hate it why well sometimes we don’t know we just do. “In time we hate that which we often fear” William Shakespeare.
Everyone has hate in them. They hate someone or something sometimes for good reason sometimes because it’s different sometimes just because we do. Some people don’t like to believe that they could hate anything but more than likely if they truly think about it and be completely honest with themselves they do.
In my life personally I have seen proof that hate is inherent to human nature. If you just flip through the news I guarantee you will always find some proof that hate exists. You will always find somewhere someone is killing somebody else for no good reason other than maybe the fact that they are different “We have just enough religion to make us hate, but not enough to make us love one another” Jonathan Swift.
You can see that hate is present in the novel too. In the novel Nurse Ratchet has a hatred for the patients. She really has no reason to hate them they have done nothing to her and yet she still treats them so poorly. The only thing the patients have done wrong is that they have problems that won’t let them function in society.
I think all of these reasons prove that hate is inherent to human nature. I don’t believe that there is really and proof to deny this fact. Now granted that there are little signs that give hope for humanity I don’t believe it is possible at least not yet. Now I’m not a pessimist I think I’m and just willing to open my eyes and accept the facts around me. And I hope one day humanity will overcome our difference and all our hate before it is too late. But I’m not going to hold my breath.

The statement I chose is "In most stories, the plot gets complicated- Something happens to make solving the problem even more difficult than it appeared at the beginning". How many times can you look at a problem (a real problem) and easily think of a good solution. Poul Anderson once said "I have yet to see any problem, however complicated, which, when looked at in the right way did not become still more complicated."
A great example of this is politics. And what the leaders of our country decide to do affects my life and many others as well. We as a nation have so many problems (recession, poverty, homelessnes, federal debt, health insurance, violence, drugs, social security, International relationships, the war in Iraq, Terrorists, G-bay etc.) that there is no way we could solve all of them. To chose which ones to attempt to solve first is a problem. And in each debate there are at least two sides arguing against each other. Each side arguing to what benefits them but it doesn't solve the whole problem. For example, Obama is trying to fix the health care problme with a government run system. But that system in itself brings up as many problems as it solves.
In the book, Mcmurphy's problem is a lot more complicated than he thought. He has to upset the established order (Ratched) without getting sent to Disturbed. Later it gets more complicated when he learns he has to stay there as long Ratched wants him to. The only solutions he has are ones he does not want to do. He can give in, conform, and let Ratched win. Or he can rebel/resist with all his might and end up staying there longer than he wants to. Neither of which is a full/complete solution to his problem. Is there ever a complete solution? Where all parties involved can get what they want. If there is I don't know what it is.
I chose the statement, “Influencing other people is something everyone should try to do.”
My Life: I really agree with this statement because everyone is different in a way and has their own qualities than anyone else that they share with other people. When I work with kids either at my job or babysitting that every child has something special about them that they share with me or other people that they know and are friends with. In school kids are always getting influenced by their friends or by teachers. It doesn’t matter if you are friends with a person that you dislike or best friends with, you influence people in some sort of way. Even if you don’t think you influenced them you probably did by your reactions and what you say to that other person. Little kids look up to older people because we are their role models no matter if we know them or not. They still look up to us because some day they will want to be the same as we are. Sometimes to influence someone is just to take time out of your way to listen to them and see what they have to say and give them your advice on a situation that they have. If someone asks you for advice and your influence on something it’s a good thing that you do it because you never know how much longer they will be around since you never know what will happen tomorrow or next week or months from now. Your words can really touch some ones heart so everyone should let other people a chance because you don’t know what they have to say because it could be beneficial. Also let other people influence you because really they don’t know what they will tell you. You never know it could change your whole lifestyle and perspective on life. That’s why people shouldn’t shun other people on what they say or what they wear because it could bring them down and it would change who you are. Treat other people they way you want to be treated because little things can change the way you are, plus your out look on life. If people were influencing each other all the time they would think better of themselves. Then we wouldn’t have people think they aren’t that important because someone didn’t influence them in some sort of action. Influencing someone can make you a better person in yourself and other people will notice that and maybe come talk to you because they know you will try to be there for them when they are in need.
The Novel: I think the novel does a very good job at showing how another person can influence another person. The person that shows the most influence is McMurphy, he makes Chief “not deaf” anymore. McMurphy also does a good job on getting to know other people that are in the hospital but also himself. He helps them come out from “behind the door” with their past and listens to them while giving them advice. If he has something to say he will say it because it changes them way they think about themselves. You never know who is watching what you do or say, but if you don’t have nice words to influence someone then don’t say them because it could really hurt them more then you think it will.
Quote: The famous quote I chose was, “Think twice before you speak, because your words and influence will plant the seed of either success or failure in the mind of another.” This famous quote is by Napoleon Hill. I agree with this quote because the words that you give a person for inspiration will probably be kept in mind for quit some time. The words that you say can be very helpful to another person even though you may not think they are that important. But maybe to the person you are telling it to may be important and they will remember that for the rest of their life because the seed is planted in them.
I chose number seven. Hate is inherent to the human race. I agree that hate is inherent to the human race because nobody is perfect and not everyone is going to get along. There are always conflicts in the world and in your everyday life. Disagreements are inevitable. Also we are influenced by our parents, peers, and the media everyday. We have an image of how people are supposed to look and act and if you don't you don't fit in which causes drama and conflicts. It is impossible to have no hate in the world we live in.
For example, in the world today and in the past people were influenced by and influenced others to hate blacks or gays. That in my opinion is wrong. During the Holocaust the Germans were programed to hate the jews. In my life, I am a pretty open minded person about most things. I can't name a group of individuals, a race, a personal belief, or a sexuality that I hate. I think perople should think for themselves. Everyone is eqaual and human, but there will always be those groups or individuals that have hate for other groups or individuals that are different from them. No matter who you are how big or how small the situation everyone hates at some point or another. It's the way we have been brought up and influenced. “It is easy to hate and it is difficult to love. This is how the whole scheme of things works. All good things are difficult to achieve; and bad things are very easy to get.” - Rene Descartes.
In the novel you see hate in many different people and situations. Nurse Ratchet has hate towards the patients and McMurphy. The patients do everything she tells them, she has no reason to hate them. McMurphy has hate for Nurse Ratchet also and tries to get under her skin and "crack" her. Hate can be recognized in different ways too. I'm sure Chief hates having to lie at times and not have the power to speak his mind. He wants to hide and likes being a fly on the wall in a sense, but who wouldn't want a change. Who wouldn't want to break free and voice their opinion once and a while. I'm sure Billy Bibbit hates having a stutter. Who wouldn't. That would suck, but he doesn't have much control over it. There is alot of hate represented in the book that is easily sensed as the reader. In a perfect world humanity would settle differences let go of the little things, even the big things and move on. Learn to love, not hate. That won't happen though, the world isn't perfect. The human race is not perfect.
The statement that mostly stood out to me was "Self-esteem is not very immportant in life." I strongly disagree with this statement as many of us would. Self-esteem is one of the key factors in our life. Without it, you don't respect yourself and neither will your peers. One of the biggest times in your life that self-esteem is required would be high school. First off, self esteem is a factor in your grades, if you dont have confidence before a test, the test may not turn out the way you want it too. Also self-esteem plays a big roll in the social life of high school. People that go around and attempt to shut other people down typically have a low self-esteem them selves and are trying to cover that up.
One of the first things you notice in Kesey's book is the fact that all but one patient (McMurphy) has little to no self-esteem due primarily on the way they are treated from the nurse. As the novel continues you start to see the patients follow McMurphy and develop A self-esteem of their own.
"They may forget what you said, but they will never forget how you made them feel."
-Carl W. Buechner
"To wish you were someone else is to waste the parson you are."
This quote pretty much sums it up: If you ency others, and have no faithe in yourself, you will never fulfill your potential in life.
"All people are 'crazy' to some extent."
I definitely agree with this statement because who are we to decide what is normal and what is crazy? To some third party outsiders my family seems crazy nuts but to us we are just one big happy family. This also goes with our way of living and our cultural habits. Just because we don't believe something or do something the same way as people in China do it doesn't necessarily means we are crazy. Difference makes us unique and individuals. God purposely made us all different for a reason; to excell and be our own person, to see how we react and not being able to rely on someone else every time.
In the novel the men on the ward seem crazy to McMurphy because he isn't familiar with their type of behavior, but to them McMurphy is the crazy one. McMurphy seems to be some superficial human that isn't scared to be who he wants to be. He isn't going to conform to the nurse just because she defines his normality as crazy.
Don't try to be perfect; just be an excellent example of being human.”-Anthony Robbins I love this quote because it makes you realize that being crazy is a part of being human and being yourself. The quote is the perfect exampe of live life to the fullest no matter who is watching!
I'm choosing the statement Fiction can be made absolutely real by the reader's imagination.
Your imagination is all you really have that people can't take from you and can't judge you for. Your imagination makes things come more alive and real if your reading a book or if your listening to someone talk. If people didnt have an imagination what would people actually picture when doing those thigs. We all need an imagination because if you dont have alot of support in your family or friends you make up an "IMAGINARY" friend that will alway's be there for you when times are hard. Our imagination's as a kid were fun and kept us going and made everything more exciting and real to us. I remember playing "guns" around my house with some of my friends that i still hang out with but now our imaginations have evolved from that to more useful things. We've all had out "BAD" imaginations when we pictured something worse or scarier then what was actually there. So don't ever quit imaging things cause everyone, young, old needs one.
this topic most relates the Chief, because he has the most indepth imagination even tho it is most often they aren't the most helpful. He has a better imagination then most kids in the world might have and thats a good thing but he just imagaines the bad things that can happen. He really thinks highly of his imagainations because he doesn't care if we understand or relate to wat he is trying to say or show us.
Imagination has brought mankind through the dark ages to its present state of civilization. Imagination led Columbus to dizcover America. Imagination led Franklin to dizcover electricity. L. Frank Baum
All people are "crazy" to some extent.
To me, this quote is beautiful. I love this quote. I also love being called crazy. I don't care what kind of crazy people are calling me. Call me insane.. fine. I'm being myself. I actually have a text in my phone right now "your crazy", and I like it. I'm personally crazy about my boyfriend as young as I may be to some people. There's just something about when you see someone you CANNOT help but smile and that happens to me every single time. It makes my crazy and happy in a good way. I'm crazy about a lot of things, such as music and movies. Friends and family can make you crazy in good ways and bad ways and that applies to everyones life. I agree with this quote because it represents many different types of people and different types of crazy. You can be crazy in love with someone, where even when you think about them it hurts, but a good hurt. When you know you are really feeling something. Crazy in love. There is a song that comes to mind instantly when I think of being crazy in love. That is "Crazy" by KC and JoJo.
"I'm going crazy crazy crazy Just from thinking about you lately (crazy, babe) I'm going crazy crazy crazy Just from thinking about you baby (I don't know what to do, ooh) I'm going crazy crazy crazy crazy Thinking about you lately (crazy, crazy, crazy) I'm going crazy crazy (crazy crazy) When I can't touch you Crazy crazy (I'm going crazy) When I can't hold you Crazy crazy (I'm goin crazy) When I can't see you again."
This is so true and beautiful. Love is when you can share confidences and trust someone with all your heart. Love could even be similar to feeling hunger and thirst. You can want it more than anything it can literally make you crazy. I have honestly read that studies have shown through brain scans that a person infatuated with love can display resemblance to those with a mental illness.
Another form of "crazy" would be someone that likes to try news things and does things they have never done. Wild and fun people are probably used to being called crazy, or have been. Who hasn't tried new things? Who hasn't gone outside their comfort zone, even if it was only once or twice. We all have. That's daring, and crazy. If a person gets a piercing in their nose or does something no one expects them to do, they will probably be categorized as crazy. A song that reminds me of this type of crazy is "Let's Get Crazy" by Hannah Montana, a personal favorite artist of mine (I'm crazy about her).
''Let's get crazy, Get up and dance, Take a swing, Do your thing, it's worth taking a chance Let's get crazy yeah just kick off your heels don't miss out, time to shout Always keeping it real Let's get crazy! Crazy!"
Just kick off your heels. Do something you wouldn't normally do and relax Hannah is saying. I like this kind of crazy. I think everyone is this kind of crazy to some extent.
Lastly, there is mentally ill "crazy." When people do things and we don't understand why or how. These people can be harmful to society if they are not sure how to act. That is why they get help from facilities until they are ready to come out and work in the real world with everyone else. These people are people to which some don't realize. Such as Nurse Ratched. Nurse Ratched believes that all the men in her ward are "crazy." In my observations, I've realized maybe some are, but a majority are not. They are crazy to me because they want to stay in the ward, but the reason for that is because they could not find a the gear to mesh into another similar gear in our "perfect" society. The standard that society has set is not one they feel they can fit into. Chief is a bit crazy, but he is manageable. McMurphy can see that some of these men are just too scared of Big Nurse to leave or reach out for help. This is why he acts out. I believe that he wants to help these guys. The more that the men act out and start to state their own opinions the more they seem like real men to me. They are saying what they truly feel. They are feeling something. They are letting out steam of exhaust from doing the same things everyday and they are expanding their horizons through McMurphy. Nurse Ratched had these men convinced they were messed up in the head for being how they are, and she doesn't hesitate to tell them that. Slowly but surely something in the ward is beginning to change.
"My friends and I are crazy. That's what keeps us sane." - Matt Schucker.
I like this quote. "My friends and I" reminds me of how McMurphy befriends all the patients so i believe that quote relates to the book in a way.
So whether you are crazy in love, crazy as in daring and wild, or mentally ill, I believe everyone has their moments.

I chose number 2, “All people are “crazy” to some extent.” I agree with this because I think it’s completely true. However, everyone’s definition of crazy differs from person to person. For instance, when it comes to me I think that being thrown off a horse or riding a bull sounds like fun. I have been thrown off and kicked by horses so many times I lost count. Yet I continue to ride and work with young horses that throw me off from time to time. Most people might call me crazy because there is a good chance that when I get thrown or even when I go out riding that something could go wrong and I could get hurt. It doesn’t faze me though it’s always in the back of my mind but never present enough to make me not want to ride, and to some that might be crazy, yet to me it’s completely normal.
When it comes to the novel society thinks that the unfit such as Chief, Harding, Cheswick, Ellis and many others are a type of “crazy”, they don’t directly say that but they wouldn’t be in the hospital if they weren’t different or threatening to the smooth function of society. They are frightened of them because they don’t know what to expect of them, they don’t know how to process who they are. It especially is clear to me when Chief is in his fog and sees Colonel Matterson float by saying how the ocean is the night and night is the ocean. Chief understands what he means for the first time. He doesn’t see him as an old chronic sitting mumbling nonsense anymore. He realizes Mexico is like a walnut, America is a watermelon, and the ocean is the night. He realizes the old man is making sense. However to anyone else such as Nurse, black boys, or anyone else in society would think that he is just mumbling on and on, they wouldn’t think to think deeper about what he is actually saying.
“Our society is run by insane people for insane objectives. I think we're being run by maniacs for maniacal ends and I think I'm liable to be put away as insane for expressing that. That's what's insane about it.”
John Lennon
The statment that self-esteem is not important to life is a statment that I disagree with. Self esteem affects almost everything that we do in our lives. It affects how we deal with family and friends. Self-esteem affects how we do in and out of school. Evan though we don't realize it we are affecting peoples self-esteem with everything we do.
If we have a great amount of self-esteem people tend to be more out going and the leaders in out community. Nurse ratchet for instance has to have a very high level of self-esteem. For her to be in charge of so many men in her ward she has to be confident with what she is doing and be happy for the people she is in charge of. When people have a high amount of self-esteem you will be more confident and be one of the leaders in a class room, community, or work place. When you have that confidence and self-esteem people want to be around you and be with you. witch feeds the self-esteem that you have. When people have the high amount of self-esteem they seem to achieve more and better things than people without it.
Self-esteem affects how we do in school. We we are happy to be here and have that high self-esteem that we all should have we achieve more and are more willing to do homework and study for tests. From my personal expiernce when I have self-esteem that isnt high I just want to take myself and be secluded for the world I dont worry about homework or tests. When we have the confidence and happiness we are more willing to perform for our teachers and ourselves.
Evan though we may not realize it everything we do affects how people think about them everyday. That extra Hey! or hi how are you? shows people that we are interested and want to listen. That connection improves self-esteem and could lead to something great. When we do ingnore someone or say something rude obviously it doesnt help somebodies self-esteem. Doing the little things for people will go a long way to help them grow as a person and help you too but the greatest thing it will do is boost your and their self-esteem.
Self-esteem is one of the best things in life to have plenty of. It shows people you are happy to be someplace or be with someone. It affects our daily lives and is probably one of the huge contributers to who we are as people. Most people care about other peoples feelings and self-esteem and that is great because it makes so many peoples lives better and someday it will come back to pay you far great things.
"Low self-esteem is like driving through life with your hand-break on."
Maxwell Maltz
I chose this qoute because emphises the fact that when people have low self-esteem they are held back from the great possibilities of life and other people affect everyones self-esteem
I chose my statement about how America forces men to act like, well, men. I agree that America does force men to act like men cause such as war like the draft when they forced men to fight for their country without having a say if they even want to go. Alot of young 18 year olds were force to give up their lives to fight in the vietnam war and its wrong. Yeah i think we need to like men but going to war is not becoming a man its becoming a blood thirsty savage.
I think to america a man is a rich, white, athletic, selfish jerk. Cause if your a nobody and you dont fit the system then your S.O.L. in this country. I'd like to make a reference to the Eminem song "white America" where in his song he strongly raps about rich white people and the horrific system that is around in this country. This connects to the statement america forces men to act like, well, men in a way how america wants a man to be. Rich for power, white for popularity, and athletically educationally for self arrogance. Sometimes i don't feel as if i even fit the standards of an american man. I'm not rich i'm not the most carsmatic person. I believe its right to a certain exent to act like men in a civilized way but the american way seems more savagely then what it should be. I mean the system really?? Truely america can't force someone to be a righteous man but only a arrogant one.
Sam Seydel
All people are crazy to a certain extent...Without the inner crazy person inside us we would almost be alike in many ways..We would all be conformists if we didnt have an inner crazy. In my eyes the crazy side of a person is the side that everyone should see because why try to impress everyone by being good and not showing your crazy side. It's better to just show your crazy side right off the bat then be well behaved and nice and then the person you were fake in front of finds out later just how crazy you are or can be
brannan_5
"All people are crazy to a certain extent"....Have u ever heard the expression "First expressions are always lasting" well I think people use this expression wayyy too much. This expression makes people conform into something someone meeting you for the first time would find acceptable. Well this still doesn't show us the true person within because the are trying to IMPRESS that person or persons they are meeting and try to act like an average acceptable human being? Which in my opinion nobody is. Everyone has their distinct characteristics about them and like this quote is saying everyone has a crazy side to them. I believe this crazy side is actually what normalcy is supposed to be. It shows us the true person behind the face and soul. I try to show my true side right off the bat because I used to go by the first impression saying and I soon found out that people need to know who you are and what you stand for in life. This is how McMurphy acts when he first comes on to the ward he shows his true self and what he stands for. No rules and an easy life.
I believe that "All people are 'crazy' to some extent".
Life: Every other summer my family and some friends go down to Mountain Home, Arkansas. When we go down there we go scuba diving, boating, tubing, and cliff jumping. My favorite things that we do are tubing and cliff jumping. Though it is really fun to go tubing you can get hurt. Especially if you are not carefully with some of the stunts you pull of. Like falling off the tube and your land in the water with your arms and head behind your back. It really hurts. Sometimes it takes a couple of times before you decide to go tubibg the right way so you and your partner do not get hurt. When cliff jumping you need to know where to jump off and when to know you are going to high. This summer I jumped from 25ft (I almost went off the 50ft high cliff). But my parents said no. There are no close hospitals to be taken to if we do something stupid when we jump.
Novel: I think that because of how long some of the men are in the mental hospital really can make you crazy. But Mcmurphy goes right on in and decides to do some crazy stunts to humiliate the big Nurse. After a while though with talking to some of the guys there he decides to calm down. He found out that some of them have been in there way longer than they were supposed to. Well that brought some of the men out. Before Mcmurphy had stood up for and with them to get what they deserved. Though sometimes not for the write reason.
Quotes: "The willingness to accept responsibility for one's own life is the source from which self-respect springs". -Joan Didion
"The privilege of a lifetime is to be yourself". -Joseph Campbell
"Our own lifeis the instrument with which we experiment with the truth". -Thich Nhat Hanh
"All people are 'crazy' to some extent."
This statement is very easy for me to agree with. Do people honestly think that when they see someone at school, they're seeing the same behavior from that person as if they were alone or with close friends? Of course not; we all know how it is because we're all like that.
I'm not saying this being "crazy" is a bad thing. It definately isn't. I would say it's that certain edge that everyone's got; for the most part, it's completely individual. If everyone didn't have a little bit of this "crazy" gene in 'em, we might as well not converse with each other at all. But then again, what if everyone was exactly the same and someone a little different showed up on the earth? Hmm, maybe it would be just like McMurphy in Cuckoo's Nest. I doubt humanity would know how to handle it; the person may be praised, or end up beaten to death with a stick.
I would have to define my craziness as having simple fun. I don't always need the biggest, best things in life to be amused. Hell, often times I'll choose to play my Super Nintendo over the PS3 I have sitting in my room. It's little things like that that make me who I am. I also have no problem with a good headbanging session mid-conversation. I have no intention to stop doing these things until I get bored of them, if that ever happens. "Why should we change if we're on stage? We're not trying to be something big and fancy; it's just us doing what we do. We'll keep it that way". That's a quote from the legendary bassist known as Cliff Burton from early Metallica. No question, everyone should live out their lives by those kind of words.
It would be interesting if some day, everyone came to school in a trance where egos and popularity had no effect on their behavior. I would like it to say the least. Getting to know people for who they really are sounds good to me. Sadly, I doubt that will happen any time soon, and we'll just have to keep dealing with these parts of life the way they've been given to us.
The statement i chose to talk about is the more rules, the better. This is true in some ways but is also false in different ways. In order to stay sane this statement must be kinda true and kinda false.
If it were true all the time we would feel like we were chained down all the time without any personal freedoms. It would also make it extremely difficult to express ourselves as individuals and make us feel like "robots". In the novel, Nurse Ratshed makes the patients feel like machines since they are too intimidated to express themselves freely.
If it were false then the world would turn into an uncivilized riot and everything would be out of control. Most of society thinks of rules to be "bad" and "uncool", but without them we'd feel like wild animals. In school, if we had no rules, nothing would get accomplished and there would be no point to go to school. “He who cannot obey himself will be commanded. That is the nature of living creatures.” said by Friedrich Nietzsche, is a good quote dealing with rules. I believe he is trying to say that people who obey rules have the intelligence to help themselves, and people who cant follow will be naturally helped along.
One person can change an established, stable environment.
I believe this is completely true. It is extremely prevalent in this novel and is easy to see in the world we live in today. It's not so much about the person that is attempting to change the environment but more about the people who are in the established environment already. The more willing those people are to change is how successful the person that is attempting to change will be. If the established people of the Ward would not want to change anything about how they live (which some don't) than they would have no reason to try and disrupt the Nurse and her daily going-abouts. Since McMurphy had Cheswick he was able to get other people in the Ward to believe in what he was saying. Think of it as a classroom with a student who is loud, obnoxious and disrespectful to everyone in the room. He takes away time of the teacher and of the students learning in order to be disciplined. If that student soon finds other kids to join the way he acts and thinks about a certain teacher or just about school in general then he will eventually over power the teacher with so many kids that the teacher would not be able to discipline all of the kids that were acting up. Randall Patrick McMurphy started out with that theory in the beginning i believe but as he went on he realized that the worst she could do to him was not bad at all. So as he went on i believe he started to be ok with acting on his own until he found out that he was the only committed on to the ward and could only be released by the Nurse whenever she felt ready. He then started to calm down and everything has gone back to order for now. So it's not hard to see that one person really can chance an established, stable environment.
I chose number 2 which states “All people are “crazy” to some extent”. This statement is obviously true since without a little bit of insanity, the world would be an abnormally dull and monotonous place. “Therefore, everyone is crazy because balance exists only in goodness, calm, patience and wisdom, while the biggest part of our population is very nervous, cruel, indifferent, intolerant and ignorant, because it lives under the influence of the wild anti-conscience. Craziness can easily increase, since it already exists inside everyone's psychic sphere.” This quote, from Charles Darwin, states that everyone is crazy, so it must be true.
For example, one weekend, one of my friends, named Zach, and I decide to break free from our same old boring routine of doing nothing on the weekends and came to the conclusion we had to do something worth while. We spent multiple weeks devising the perfect weekend, to our abilities, which was very limited since we were 11. Eventually it came to us; we would go to Minneapolis and go to the Mall of America, since we hadn’t been there yet. We begged and pleaded to go, and eventually got our way. Just as we expected, that weekend was phenomenal! We spent so much of our parent’s money; you might have thought we were rich! It was well worth all the planning and begging.
In One Flew over the Cuckoo’s Nest, Ken Kesey shows us how we are all a little crazy by when he introduces a perfectly “sane” person into an insane asylum. When McMurphy first steps on the ward, he is a perfectly “normal” person, but after spending some time on the ward, he eventually realizes the residents of this asylum aren’t as crazy as he first thought. He also brings about some craziness when he pokes the bear, the bear being Nurse Ratched. He brings hope and “new” actions about the ward, which is a direct result of his “crazy” actions.
Through all of these examples, it’s obvious that everyone is a little crazy, no matter how normal they act. Without crazy people though, life just wouldn’t be the same.
"All people are crazy to some extent."
I agree with this statement completely. In some way or another, everyone has some "craziness" about them, whether its the fact that they're obesessed with something, or just have something about them that makes them stand out from the crowd like McMurphy. I personally am crazy about black gospel music. Some people think me crazy for even liking it. I also am crazy about dancing. I've gotten weird looks from many people because I seem to dance everywhere I go. Also, when I'm with my friends we can be quite loud. You can almost tell that every adult we walk by is just thinking, "those crazy highschool girls." Crazy is different to every person. What might seem normal to me (dancing everywhere, blasting black gospel in my car) might be considered crazy to someone else while I might consider their idea of normal crazy. It just depends on who you talk to.
In the novel, all the patients are supposedly "crazy" but then McMurphy comes in and is completely wild, making him seem crazy, though he probably doesn't have any mental illness at all. Through his loud, rambunctious ways he helps the other men of the ward realize that some changes need to take place, and maybe that they're not so crazy after all.
"No one can drive you crazy unless we give them the keys." -Doug Horton
"What sane person can live in this world and not be crazy?" -Urula K. LeGuin
"All of us are crazy in one way or another." -Yiddish Proverb
The statement i chose was statement number 14. Statement 14 is the one that say "America forces men to act like, well, men. I believe this to be incredibly true. Alot of the stories/tv shows/ and movies that have men as their lead role portay them as MEN. In the book that we are reading now McMurphy is a man in everysense. He drinks, gambles, swears, and hooks up with hot chicks (hopefully). In most of the tv shows you watch nowadays is about a family with a very stereotypical male as the father who works the 9-5 likes to drink with his buddies and watch the game at a bar, and often gets in fights with his wife about not respecting her as a person.. a perfect example of this would be "According to Jim" that used to air on ABC. In alot of action movies that are ever so popular these days the male is often a hunky bad apple thats knows how to muscle his way out of almost every situation.
In america we outcast people other boys/men for not doing the typical man things like womanize girls, play rought physical sports like football, and basketball. Men that are gay or are thought to be gay are harrassed so much because they do not fit our mold of a "man." In cuckoos nest dale harding is often the one getting pecked at the pecking parties, because everyone believes him to be gay, and he can not satisfy his beautiful wife so he is not living up to "manly" standards. If a person doesnt wanna play the typical manly sports like football, basketball, and baseball. they will most often be picked on. I myself was basically harassed into playing football in fourth grade i played soccer for four straight years and loved but, but got made fun of alot for not being like the other "men" playing football. So i made the switch, im glad i did, but it was one way for me personally that american forced me to act like, well, a man. America also forces men to act like men with how we pick our jobs, if as a man you do not choose to go into a stereotypical manly field you will be questioned.. When men decide to major in "women" dominated jobs they are often looked at as kind of queer a big example is nursing, nursing is seen as a womens jobs for a few reasons: 1.) one it was started by a women, 2.) nurses are directly under doctors, and 3.) they are often seen as the caring ppl who comfort you by your bedside in the hospital. The quote to back up my beliefe that america forces men to act like men is from Margaret Mead, who is an american anthropologist, anthropology is the study of human beings everywhere and throughout time, so she might know a little bit about this subject. Mrs Mead said "Many societies have educated their male children on the simple device of teaching them not to be women." She supports my state ten fold with this! America in alot of ways primarily teaches and shows young boys that the only way they can be successful is to go into a traditional male dominated field like medicine, law, and business. This leads to all the conformity in the world. With that being said those were just some of the MANY ways america forces men to act like, well, men!
8. The best place for people who have mental illnesses is an institution.
I disagree with this statement. One of my older sisters sova has cerebral palsy and is severely mentally impaired, she is 24 years old. My brother and one of my older sisters a few years ago begged my parents to have my sister sova sent away to an institute, it made me cry and cry the thought that they were ashamed of her and tried to hide her from the world. As if she wasnt a human being, my father did not want to send her away and neither did my mom neither did i or my sister renuka. I argued and fought with my siblings that she isnt going anywhere i was terrified if she went to one of those institutes or homes that the nurses or helpers wouldnt do the little things sova likes things like give her soda when she wants one or give her magazines when she wants to flip through them and look at the pictures or let her watch tv, gosh that was one of my worst memories just the struggle within my family. Im glad that sova did not go to a home or an institute she is still living with us. There are people whom are severely mentally impaired that could never function in society you know have a job or anything like that my sister is like that but hell i would never send her aways as if she was a burden never i refuse hell no i wont. There are families that cannot find the means to pay for medical supplies or facilitate an impaired family member, there is nothing wrong if they have to put said family member in a home or institute. Not all mentally impaired people belong in homes or institutions no. I dont have a really tangible reason why i disagree but i just cant stand that thought. I cant really find a statement persay in the novel but the way chief describes the ward at the beggining and throughout the novel, Its like the patients are sheep being herded and the fruit and color of life is non existent on the ward. Its probably really just a crappy blog statement because i had no logic to back up my standing on this issue but i disagree and for my quote: "Fiction reveals truth that reality obscures".

I agree with the statement “ Discipline is absolutely necessary in most settings”. If there weren’t any discipline, the world would be very chaotic. People would be doing what they wanted, when they wanted to, and where they wanted to, even if it was wrong and hurt others. For example, if there were no discipline in school, kids would be acting out and throwing things and teachers wouldn’t be able to control them. discipline should be a part of the school. Love and care is necessary towards a child for their development. But, at the same time, one should be disciplined for breaking the laid down rules of the school. As the old saying goes – ‘No one is above the law’, it is very much the same for the schools and students. They should be punished for their bad behaviors and untidiness; I agree that there are better ways of giving punishments than beating a child, students can be warned, their parents can be called, they can be suspended, etc. After all, teachers are society builders, they have to be strong enough to lay down the rules the school systems create and expect everyone to follow.
An example, in my life, why I believe in discipline is on the road. If everybody chose to drive at their own speed and never got in trouble, there would be many more accidents and could affect my life greatly.
In the novel, I agree with nurse Ratchet, that there should be rules that need to be followed. If the patients didn’t have a set schedule, they could get out of line and there would be chaos.

I chose number twenty-five because if you were to sit down with a hippy, farmer, wrestler, or drug experimenter you would learn a lot. Just by listening to what they have to say about what they've experienced; you could learn morals, what not to do in life, how life can be free and awesome, and how much work you must do everyday to accomplish your goal.
A hippy lives their life how they want too with no rules. Why should rules stop a person from doing what they want to do with their life, I mean it is their life right? Not the governments? Some people say they should follow the rules to keep them safe but than they're basically like robots that the government is controlling, not fun, not free. I think personally a person should be able to do what they want whatever it is, nothing should have to hold them back, especially rules.
A farmer, they work everyday all day, keeping their crops and cattle, if any, in shape and up to standards so there are no problems. Problems only cost more time and/or money depending on the situation. Being a farmer is tough, up early in the mornings to feed cattle, being in a tractor moving stuff or doing chores. Farmers have chores everyday so when a teenager likes to complain about chores, point them in a farmers direction and they're bound to have a news flash. A person could/would learn a lot from just hanging with a farmer once, I've done it and it's hard work and time consuming, you have to do it no matter what. You want to make a living and be somewhat happy, than do your work on time. If you choose not too, than your life is going to be an active bomb.
A wrestler, what do you think they go through everyday? They have to be in shape, stay strong, and practice their maneuvers just about everyday. They do have time to spend with family and to do things they want, but they also have to stay on time with stuff and cant move it to a later time. Being a wrestler would take major determination and dedication. Just imagine yourself being a wrestler and working out on a daily bases, practicing daily, and keeping up on your health. Doesn't sound hard, but try it and we'll see what you say. Sit down with one and see what they say about it, your mouth is going to drop like a deer after it was smoked by a semi-truck.
Personally I think talking with a drug-experimenter would be fascinating because they know so much about it all and could teach you a world load of information. They've probably tried it and/or had someone or something try it and watched the effects it had. Drugs are a wonderful thing to some people, but drugs will do stuff to your body, mind, and physic ability. It's not a good side effect and that's why drugs are not a good thing, thus them being illegal. Yet, people still do them and try them to get that one time feeling of wow, because they want to feel like they're on top of the world. Personally I have tried a drug and yea i felt amazing, but yet i knew it was bad and that's why I've never done it again. I don't want to look down the road fifteen to twenty years and see myself sitting in a camper by the river looking like crud, so not cool! A drug-experimenter could teach you a lot and show you what it will do to your body and how it's not a good thing to do or have in your system.
Sitting down and talking with all these kinds of people would be an interesting experience and I wouldn't mind doing it. For now though, I'll imagine what they go through everyday and just be amazed, because they're helping our world become a better place even if you don't realize it. I would recommend trying to talk with those that have lived the life or is living the life and just become informed on what they have to say. Maybe you can relay it onto your friends and it'll spread like the plague.
I agreed with this statement because of all the reasons i listed about and explanations i gave for them. This is a good statement and everyone should have agreed with it, but that's my opinion, if you disagreed I would love to know why and a in depth explanation too please.

“Native Americans have been treated better than fairly by the US government and citizens.”
I don’t believe that Native Americans have been treated fairly; in fact, they have been treated worse than African-Americans and Hispanics. Since white settlers started moving west, Native American tribes have taken the most sacrifices to please the whites. Then, when they were forced off of their sacred homelands to distant territories, and were told they could not leave that land – “reservations.” Finally, in the last few years, the Native Americans have been given back some of their rights and have been helped by the individual state and local governments to make their lives better, but nothing could replace the emotion and relief of setting foot on the ground that was home for hundreds of years.
In my life, I have seen and heard about the hazardous conditions on the reservations. From the astronomically high suicide rate to the number of convicted felons and drunks on the reservation, I have seen the numbers and traveled through the reservations, and nothing I have seen can compare to how terrible the conditions are there. When I went to Boy’s State, I roomed with a gentleman from Buffalo, SD. He is a Native American, living with foster parents to keep him from being another statistic in the books. I heard some of the most interesting stories and some of the most heart wrenching truths about first-hand experiences on the reservation through the eyes of a then 10 or 11 year old. There were parties where even the reservation police came and drank with the partiers. The life of Natives on the reservations is a terrible and unpredictable one. But some good news lately is that the Federal government gave Pine Ridge $25 million to rebuild their jail. I know it’s a jail, but anything new is a massive bust in morale for these unfortunate people. “For a short time we lived quietly. But this could not last. White men had found gold in the mountains around the land of winding water,” Chief Joseph. “I was hostile to the white man...we preferred hunting to a life of idleness on our reservations. At times we did not get enough to eat and we were not allowed to hunt,” Chief Crazy Horse.
In the novel, One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest, Chief Bromden recalls his time at home on the reservation near the falls. When he was younger, government agents came to his reservation and wanted to talk to his father, the real Chief. After a few months of the government pushing and persuading Chief’s father, the government bought the reservation and the Natives that were there were left with no place to go. Never did Chief’s father have a chance at saving the reservation. The government wanted the land to develop the nearing town upon and they were willing to go as far and spend as much as was needed to get rid of the Native Americans and eliminate the reservation.
I think that gay marriage should be allowed by each state in the union. Just because of someone's sex preference they are discriminated agaist? They didn't kill anyone, rob a bank, or threaten anyone by being gay. Gay is just a preference nothing more. Such as how people prefer neutral colors over neon ones, nothing is wrong with one or the other. If society is more accepting of gay marriages then how society thinks will also change drastically. Society wouldn't be so judgemental to new ideas, change, or even consistancy. Keeping an open mind could make society that much better than every other country, and our country loves to be in control so starting with allowing gay marriage could change society alot.
Gay marriage has definately effected my personal views. I have friends who prefere the same sex, and to be honest they are some of the happeiest people I've ever met. One day they too will want to be married to their sole mate and deserve as much of the right to be married as I do.
In the novel Harding is looked upon as being gay. Which I think he is. It's a perfect example of how Harding is married, but completely unhappy around his wife, and wants to show his true affection, but unsure how to do so without being discriminated against even in the institution. Why should Harding suffer for how he feels? If gay marriage was allowed and accepted he could be himself and truely happy. Maybe he would be stronger and not put down by his wife. His life could be totally different like, not even being in the institution but in the real world.
One quote I found was: "It is our steadfast belief that Love, not law, is the basis and the foundation of marriage. We also believe that no government should be allowed to legislate for or agianst any person based upon their gender, race, sexual orientation or religious belief." by First Nation Church of April 2007.
Gay marriage is just a preference and no one should be discriminated against because of it. That's why gay marriage should be allowed by each state in the union.

I choose the self-esteem is not very important in life. Self-esteem is indeed very important to one’s life and one’s character. In my thought you need self-esteem to survive and to live a happy human life. I personally believe that self-esteem is a necessity of life. Everything impacts self-esteem, such as; grades, friends, sports, family, work, school, and sleep. When someone feels good about something that they have done or accomplished the self-esteem level rises and they are happy. When a person is put down or made to feel inferior the self-esteem level drops and can lead to depression or just being blunt and unhappy.
Personal appearance can also affect self-esteem, someone who won the genetic lottery is more likely to feel higher self-esteem than a person who believes he or she is ugly or unwanted. Self –esteem gives character because there is a link between one’s mood and their self-esteem level. A person with a higher self-esteem is more likely to be an energetic, luminous and lively person than someone with a low self-esteem. People want to be around others with the same self-esteem level or higher than themselves because it makes them feel better when they around such people.
In the novel One Flew over the Cuckoo’s Nest, McMurphy gives the patients a little self-esteem, which Nurse Ratched takes away, he gets them to loosen up. Before the days of McMurphy everything in the ward was dull, established, unoriginal and repeating. McMurphy brings the patients hope and something to look forward to. McMurphy stands for much more than just one man, or a patient but something for the other patients to look up to and to strive for, he upends the establishment and the nurse by getting the patients on his side. McMurphy brightens up the patient’s lives and that is why they like him so much, to them he is a savior, a new beginning.

“All people are crazy to some extent.” I agree strongly with this statement because no matter what we judge to be “crazy” someone else will find it completely normal. And what some may see as normal, others will view as crazy. No matter who you are, you indeed have something crazy about you. Be it a crazy obsession, thought, or idea…you are crazy to someone out there. For example, I am obsessed with weird food combinations and trying new ones all the time. I eat peanut butter on my cheeseburgers, grape jelly on macaroni and cheese, apple sauce on lasagna, and American cheese on banana bread…just to name a few. I also am obsessed with Whitney Houston. Her voice is amazing although many have never heard of her, or refuse to except her music and call me “crazy” for liking it. People say that the patients in the mental hospital at crazy, when some of them may not be all that abnormal. They are just so beaten down by society that the only safe place they have lies within the institution. Take McMurphy; his acting out, gambling, smoking, and obsession with women may be viewed as crazy. I feel that he is just trying to liven up the hospital. Being who you are and not acting fake does not make you a crazy person. I often dance and sing all by myself in the car. I get some very strange looks sometimes, but it makes me happy to act that way. I can just feel the glares saying, “Look at that hopeless girl all alone dancing and singing like no one else is around. She needs help; the girl is insane!”
In the novel people judge the patients based on the fact that they are simply admitted to the hospital. In fact, most of them are voluntarily admitted! They can leave whenever they so choose. Harding just can’t bare the burden of having an overly attractive wife, and needs the ego boost of being around so many other “hopeless” men to feel better. Chief is viewed as “crazy” because he does not speak; is it so crazy to be silent when after so many years you’ve been ignored? Sefelt simply has seizures due to epilepsy. He can’t even help it!
Harding says on page 238, “Never before did I realize that mental illness could have the aspect of power, power. Think of it: perhaps the more insane a man is, the more powerful he could become.” I think there is a lot of truth in this that we should all think about. Albert Einstein also once said, “A question that sometimes drives me hazy; am I or are the others crazy?” Jimi Hendrix embraced being craziness saying, “You have to go on and be crazy. Craziness is like heaven.”
"All people are "crazy" to some extent."
I trully believe this statement is true because i have lived it, seen it, and will always be in me. This statement becomes real in a person when a indiviual reaches his\her exploding point or also knowen as the changin point.Like water has freezing point and also boiling point, people also have there point that they change there personatally, mood, and other characteristics of them selves. But the most importante of there changing point is what causes that change to happen. Sometimes is the surrondings, the problems, or what/who they admire.
In the novel MacMurphy want to find Nurse Rached changin point before she finds his. Nurse Rached aka. Big Nurse is a calm strict nurse that has never changed her mood in her career being the head of the ward. But thats about to change when MacMurphy trys to influece the other patients to make her go "crazy". MacMurphy is gona try the imposible to make her "crazy", because if Nurse Ratched become insane the ward is gone be diffrent, meaning better for the patients and for the employees.
My life experient about "crazy" is that people say and know me as being calm but i also have a boilling point, and after they pass me through that boilling point they dont want to be close to me anymore cause i turn into a beast like the Hulk. Iam calm just to temp me. Everyone has a "crazy" beast inside them, just that they dont want that to show or reflect on them.
Also some people arnt "crazy" they just are "missunderstood" like the song by the singer Lil Wayne(Dwayne Carter)he is talking about how the goverment take his people by being "crazy". Many people are taken as being "crazy" but the real things is that people dont really know them or they mistreat them the way they are, because they are diffrent.
I agree with the statement "One person can change an established, stable environment." This statement is completely true. If you took this statement to the extreme, lets say one person decides to rob a bank, this person would demolish the environment of the bank they are in. If a new kid moves into a school district then the school social structure must eventually accomidate the new child, and that is a form of changing a stable environment.
In the novel, when McMurphy arrives to the ward and takes the bet, he will, in time, change the environment of the ward. Many of the patients will look to him and not to Nurse Ratched as their leader. His arriving to the ward also completely shattered the stable environment of Cheswick, by McMurphy's tweaking of Ratched's nose he influenced Cheswick to do the same, but when McMurphy removed his support Cheswick couldn't take the change back to normal ways. Another way McMurphy changed a Stable environment would be his effect upon Chief Bromden. McMurphy gradually draws Chief out of his fog and gets him to open up to McMurphy. When McMurphy gets the doctor to try and change things he is, yet again, changing the environment of things in the ward.
A quote that I believe accurately describes this statement would have to be "Ten people who speak make more noise than ten thousand who are silent." by Napoleon Bonaparte. How I interpret this quote is that a few people can change something if they speak up. Where as if many people don't say anything, nothing will be changed.
I personally am a rule follower. I don't try to stick out or cause a scene by breaking rules, but I have noticed that there are people in this world that get a kick out of doing just that. Breaking the rules. Some people are told something and choose to do opposite. I think that rules are great to an extent but can easily be misused to cause serious havoc. This is why I do not believe that the more rules there are, the better off everything and everyone will be.
Bill Cosby was quoted once saying, "Civilization had too many rules for me, so I did my best to rewrite them." I believe there could be a hundred million other people in this world thinking the same way. People that are sick of being controlled by the government, schools, family members, or in McMurphy and the rest of the patient's case, the Machine. The machine that says the radio cannot be turned down in the day room. These type of rules can be altered to make it easier on everyone, instead of sticking to what the machine says is right and have "fit hitting the shan."
The rule that you couldn't chew gum in middle school didn't keep kids from chewing gum. It tempted us to be rebels, to live on the edge a little. To see how good our teachers were at spotting it in our mouths. It was a game to us. But I do understand rules that are needed. Like terrorism. Its against the "rules" to commit terroristic attacks against other countries. Although, this "rule" has been broken about everyday some places so someone can feel like a rebel. In the minds of some....rules are ment to be broken.
I'm tired...
Austin Sumner
“Fiction can be absolutely real by the reader’s imagination.” I believe this statement is extremely accurate and applies to all in life. A story is as real as the reader and his or her imagination dreams it to be. In the novel One Flew over a Cuckoo’s Nest Chief Bromden has paranoid schizophrenia. He has insane dreams about machines and factories killing other patients and sees fog quite often. None of these things are real to others but they are extremely real to him. I think that all people must have paranoid schizophrenia because at some point in life we all have dreams that feel real or see or feel things that are not real to others.
I feel I am a lot like Chief because I feel that this novel is real. Every feeling and action that happens I can see and feel the emotions he must have felt. The novel brings you into the plot with all of the characters. How can you be there when the whole novel is fiction and none of it happened? I see it and it feels real to me as it does to Chief. But Chief is not real he is in my mind and the minds of all others who read One Flew over the Cuckoo’s Nest. This novel in my imagination is real.
“You can often measure a person by the size of his dream.” This quote is a good example of how Chief Bromden must feel. He is an extremely large man but he feels extremely small. Chief feels a little bigger when he goes into his fog or begins to dream about when he was a child. Everybody feels small at some point and when you dream and take your mind off it all you feel a little bigger and a little stronger. Sometimes dreams are better than reality. Everybody is always going to have some of those days that everything seems to go wrong and you just wish you could sleep for a week straight because life is better in your dreams. To some extent you can create and control your dreams. You can take yourself back to a time when life was better which is exactly what Chief does in the novel. He can take himself back to when he didn’t feel small and unimportant. Back to a time when he was stronger than the Nurse and stronger then the disease he is now burdened with. Everybody needs a little imagination and a dream to take them away when the going gets tough.
"All people are "crazy" to some extent."
I definantly believe that this is true. I am pretty sure everyone has used the word crazy many times to describe anything. So if you are describing "anything" as crazy then isn't anything the same as "to some extent." There are definantly many times that I have used the word crazy for sure. "Man this test is going to be crazy!" for example, but that is different then a person being crazy is it not? If you see someone running down the hall you usually say something like, "you are crazy" or something along those lines. But when people say crazy, do they really mean it? I think they do. I think that because what that person is doing is out of the "norm" it is concidered crazy. You can do anything really and be concidered crazy, to some extent. Anyone can be, even some of the shy people that like to read? Yes, we all know them, and to some people and I, we think that it is "crazy" for someone to read all the time. Why? Because it is out of the "norm" we are used to.
This also compares to the book in the way that, EVERYONE IN THIS BOOK IS CRAZY! And alot of them to different extents! I think that Mcmurphy is honestly not that crazy. He is actually one of the sane ones in my eyes. And not to sound bad, if it does, but I think so far, Cheswick is the craziest. It would have to take someone that is super crazy to be able to shove their fingers into something and get them stuck and commit suicide in that way. But he is not the only crazy one. Chief is also very crazy. He thinks everything is mechanical and that everything and everybody is out to get him. I mean this whole story shows crazy people constantly. And all the people can be concidered crazy too. Give me an example of someone someday and I will find something that could be classified as crazy about them. EVERYONE has a crazy side or some crazieness (real word?) in them.
“Being normal isn’t one of my strengths.”
-could this go with the theme of crazy? i wasnt sure exactly what kind of quotes to look up. (http://www.postcardsfromthefunnyfarm.com/crazy-quotes/)
“Some days it’s not worth gnawing through the straps.”
-same website as the one listed about
“My psychiatrist told me I was crazy and I said I want a second opinion. He said okay, you’re ugly too.”
Rodney Dangerfield
“You expect to break me? Impossible! You broke me years ago. You killed me years ago....”-Charles Manson(i put this because it kind of goes with what we talk about with cookoo's nest alot)
-DAN NELSON
(random funny quote i thought mr. c might like that i found while looking for a good quote- “Ever wonder if illiterate people get the full effect of alphabet soup?”.-lol sweet)
“Tabula Rasa” the famous quote by the philosopher John Locke states that we are born with a “clean slate” or that everyone is born free of knowledge, therefore they are shaped from life's experiences. This statement indicates that we are born innocent of preconceived notions like love and hate. Even though some teach that we are born evil and hateful. However, I don’t believe that hate is inherent to human nature and we can see this through how people are influenced by their environment. Through life hate is forced upon us, hate is taught, and hate is fostered by ignorance.
First, I believe that we are constantly being forced to hate. In “One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest” Billy Bibbit gets forced to despise and hate himself, because of his less than manly tendencies. This hate is being forced upon him by the other patients and his so called “friends” during their pecking parties. Also in life there are circumstances where we are forced to hate ourselves, like when our peers and even our “friends” expect us to act and look a certain way. Society also reinforces this by saying that we should be beautiful or wealthy and if we cannot live up to these ridiculous expectations that we are defective and worthless.
Also, I believe that hate is persistently taught throughout our lives in many ways by our families, the media, and the Government. When we are young we learn through the examples of our parents and often times we inherit their biases and hate towards other people and cultures. The media also teaches us to hate by always showing us a negative viewpoint of certain races or cultures. Governments furthermore teach people hate by showing that their country is superior to all others, or that certain countries and people are of less value.
Finally, hate is fostered by ignorance. In “One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest” Chief Bromdon is discriminated against his entire life, because people think that just because he is Indian he is incapable of being intelligent. In many circumstances we hate because we think that if someone is a different color or religion means that they are different or somehow less human, but in reality we are all human beings regardless of color and religious preference. Like in WWII when we as a culture dehumanized the Japanese people and treated them as second class citizens, because of our ignorance towards them.
In conclusion, I don’t believe that we are born with hate or that hate is inherent to human nature, but that we are continually bombarded by it our entire lives. I also believe that we do have the capability to be without hate if we can reach past our ignorance and see each person’s individual worth instead of their differences.

I chose the statement: The best place for people who have mental illnesses is in an institution.
I chose this statement because I disagree with it one-hundred percent. I believe that people who have mental illnesses and disabilities should be a part of society like everyone else. We can learn a lot from people who have mental illnesses. Two of my cousins, Katie and Peter, were born with autism. They cannot communicate and interact socially with other people very well. Since Katie and Peter cannot talk they will sometimes pull on peoples hair and clothing to get attention. It sometimes gets frustrating because they do not fully understand what they are doing sometimes hurts, but they have taught me to be more patient. My aunt and uncle have to constantly be watching the kids; it is easy to see that it is very tiring and difficult for them. Watching my aunt and uncle take care of the kids has taught me another thing, I have learned to be more caring and considerate and less judgemental towards others because I do not know what they go through when they are at home.
In the novel "One Flew Over The Cuckoo's Nest" I think McMurphy is learning from the other patients who reside in the ward. I think McMurphy is learning that the people in the ward are just as normal as other people, but they have just been forced to believe that they are "crazy". He is also learning how to care about others. McMurphy does not think that patients actually belong in the ward.
“The statistics on sanity are that one out of every four Americans is suffering from some form of mental illness. Think of your three best friends. If they're okay, then it's you.”
-Ralph Waldo Emerson

I disagree with the “Self-esteem is not very important in life.” I think is one of the most important things to have a high self-esteem to have a healthy life style. Self-esteem is a big part of who you are. It influences how you react in stressful situations, how you conduct yourself in front of people. You can see a person with a low esteem. They will
A man with a very low self-esteem, Chief, will shelter himself out of reality. Chief always gets nervous and feels a cloud of fog hover over him so nothing can get him. And some of the patients stay they voluntarily because they are afraid to live there life. Harding doesn’t have the self-esteem to say what he truly thinks about his sexuality and just hides with the norm of what people “should” like.
I have a high self-esteem; I hang out with my friends and do things that I feel are enjoyable and I feel proud to be who I am. I feel good about the simple things I do day by day and don’t get frustrated with myself and always think to myself to just try my hardest. Like in school, if your peers don’t think they can do a class and consistently be negative about it, it may affect the grade you get.
“Self-love, my liege, is not so vile a sin as self-neglecting.”- William Shakespeare. I believe he means that if you love yourself, and think proudly about you, is not as bad as being harmful to yourself.
Im going to choose the one about more rules, the better. It is true in some ways but also a false statement.
For some ways the more rules the better. It keeps this world sane and makes people stay in shape and think about what they are going to do or say before they do it. For then they know the consiquences of there actions. It can also be bad due to, to many rules. And that can give people no freedom whats so ever. And make them want to break those rules so they feel free.

I decided to choose number twenty five on the anticipation guide. One can definitely learn a lot from a hippy, a farmer, and a drug-experimenter. In my opinion, i believe that you can gather information from anybody. It may not be the correct information, but a lot of it may be true.
One of my best friends mom was a hippy back in the day. She did almsot everything imaginable a hippy did. She was the person who taught me and my brother about drugs and alcohol when we were little, which my mother wasn't very happy about, and how bad they are. The reason my mom was mad was because she smoked cigarettes quite a bit. Thanks to my friends mom, we convinced our mom and dad to quit smoking.
I strongly agree that you can learn a lot from a farmer. They have to know a lot about the land and animals to be able to even be a farmer, or they are "screwed". Therefore if a farmer knows all of that, he can teach you all of that and you then gain knowlege. As Edward Daglberg said, "Writing is conscience, scruple, and the farming of our ancestors".
Drug-experimenters can also teach you all about what drug is good with another drug. This is of course a terrible thing, but you can still learn of all the unnecessary details of drugs. Like in the book, Fredrickson would just take the pills that Sefelt was supposed to be taking because he thought that he needed more.
You can learn many things from just about anybody. Every person has different experiences that can teach others to learn from their mistakes. Although drug experimentors or hippies may not be the ideal people to learn from, they can always offer some sort of advice. Farmers can offer the knowledge of the true meaning of hard work. It is the responsibility of each person to take this knowledge and apply it to everyday life.
