"My Fair Lady": Stimulating or Stale?

Are you finding the lyrics stimulating? Yes or no? (You must fill the margins with your thinking. Don't forget to mention and highlight 5 movies, 2 books, 2 historical events, and 2 pieces of important art within your response to these lyrics. This exercise is designed to get you to interact in an academic fashion with a major work from the canon [canon = the "best" of a genre; in this case the genre is drama]. It is due Friday, September 26, and is worth 200 points.)
Remember to type your class period number before your comment.

Mr. C did you want us to blog our annotations or simply write them on the lyrics you handed to us?

Mr. Matt Christensen said...

Just write them on the handout. You could blog them if you feel like showing other students a scholarly example, though, Thanh!

I find some of the lyrics stimulating. My favorite lyric is "With a little bit of luck", because it's catchy and funny. The one lyric where I found it very annoying was the one where Eliza is too excited to go to bed. She just kept going on and on, and I wish it wasn't so long and annoying.

I don't like any of the songs in this musical because they are all long and are too repetitive. The rhythm of "With a little bit of luck" was the only one I remembered. Like Mal said, it's catchy and funny; overall, the lyrics are annoying.

I find it kind of difficult to annotate these lyrics because for me they are explained better when they are performed in the play. Although, there are some songs that I can somewhat relate to but its very difficult to connect it with artwork and historical events. There have been a couple of lyrics that do, however, stimulate my mind.

Any specific examples of lyrics that "work" and those that "don't work" for you?

I don't agree with the lyrics in the song "With a Little Bit O' Luck" when Alfred says, "With a little bit of luck, someone else'll do the blinkin' work!" because he thinks he is lucky when he doesn't have to work and moocheds off of others. I think he is lucky to have a job, especially in his state of poverty. He should be happy to have a job when there are other people who really want a job but can't get one and would spend the money on important things, not just getting drunk.

I don't think he has a regular job. He might show up at a site randomly, but not regularly. He's happy to beg constantly, because he's happy to be undeserving poor.

He's a dustman, cleaning the chimneys of London. A miserably filthy job. I bet he works when he feels like it, which is not often indeed.

I am going to have to agree with Dani when she said that some of the lyrics are hard to compare with artwork and historical events. I don't know much about artwork and these songs are way too simple to be compared to something as wonderful and popular as artwork. I don't like having to mention the movies, books, historical events and artwork, but other than that the songs are really easy to understand.

I definitely think the lyrics are stimulating. They are so clever and imaginative. I like the delightful rhyming in the lyrics as well. The songs are easy to interpret and provide a sense of amusement. I have found many things I can relate them too so it makes it simple to understand. The actors demonstrated good vocal cords also.

5 I think the lyrics to the songs make sense. With the movie they make sense , and with the book. When Eliza found that she could speak correctly she also sang much better. Her pitch and everything was very very good. I really like musicals and plays , so i enjoyed this movie.

I thought that the lyrics were very stimulating and interesting. I especially remembered that song with the lyrics "just you wait" and Eliza is talking about how she wants "Enry Iggins" dead and how she hates him so much. I also like the song "with a little bit" because it was catchy and reminded me of Will and how Mr. Doolittle actually does little with his life until he inherits a large sum from an American man.

The story was less imaginative than the actual movie. Only due to a couple of reasons: visual characteristics (the way they dressed, spoke, acted) and the setting (U.K. 1900's) these are the main characteristics that appealed to me. Each character had its own style in which was absolutely awful, such as: ignorance, poverty, pity, high~class, superiority, etc. I find it funny how people create an image of themselves and go from there rather than their personality. But lets face it, if you go to New York today, the only judging you will see is the way you look and what/where you work. To me...this story/movie was pretty good. The ending didn't necessarily, "threw me off" but it left me "hangin". If there was someone who asked me about the book or the movie, I would tell them to read/watch it and find out for yourselves. I give is a 3.5 out of 5
