The function of the artist that stands out most to me in Pygmalion, so far in the first and second act is "upsetting th status quo." Liza is a girl from the streets, struggling day by day and if lucky week by week. Henry Higgins is a very wealthy and smart man. Mr. Higgins studies phonetics which is the study of speech. Liza would never be allowed near buckingham palace because of her terrible horrible speech, but Mr. Higgins wants to challenge that. Liza is no where near speaking like a duchess. But in six months time Henry Higgins wants to change everything about Liza, turning her into a duchess. By doing this Mr. Higgins will be upsetting the status quo of Buckingham Place by pooving if enough work is put into it anyone can be transformed into royalty.
I think that Pygmallion has put into perspective for me what it is to live the life of a poor girl. Eliza Doolittle shows us how being a poor girl in a big city is extremely hard to do. She has to try to make enough money to support herself and her father. She also has to live with the ridicule of all of the other higher-class people who also live in London. She is a strong woman in some sense, but also very weak when you look at her situation. This information about Eliza showed me a whole new perspective, one of much despair and hard work.
