The "thank" letters are also a good way to show a celebrity that they are looked up to and influencing people, and I'm excited to write my letter and (hopefully) receive a reply!
I think that the letter project is a good way to teach how to send a formal letter to someone. It is a very useful skill to have later in life. Making it a project like this also puts a fun part to it on something that could happen out of it like all of the other students.
