The topic I chose to research and write about is why social media leads to a decrease in happiness. I have been researching how social media leads to mental health issues, lack of sleep, human disconnection, low self-esteem, and addiction. So far, I have only fully researched and written about the mental health issues that prevail with the use of social media. From that research, I have learned a lot more about social anxiety and depression and different symptoms that come along with each of those issues. I have read different articles and posts about the other effects social media has but I have yet fully research each one on its own. I was also planning on conducting a survey for one of my citations about some of the statistics that I have found to see if they are true within our class. At first, I had trouble finding my inspiration and research methods for my causal essay but now, I feel like I am on a roll. I now know what I am trying to talk about in my essay and I have found good websites on the topics I have chosen. I do find this essay somewhat fun but it is laborious in finding all of the research that can stand with your topic chosen.
I chose to research about the Northern Lights. They have always something I'd love to see, and I still hope to see them one day. I've always been curious about how they appear I mean like they are bright streaks of lights in the sky at night, that something that most people would wonder about. It is fun to research it because I actually see how they are created and I've also found out that there are also "northern lights" in the south and guess what they are called? Southern Lights. They appear in New Zealand, Australia, and Antarctica and places like that. I feel like my topic research is easy enough that I can find a lot of information on it. When I go to Alaska in August, even though Northern Lights are seen more in the fall-spring, I hope to get lucky ad see them.
The discussion I chose to write about is why people watch sports. I am no stranger to sports and started the essay with a solid understanding and base knowledge of the sports world. I also have ideas on what the general content in the essay will be; however, there is plenty of research to be done. Although I am in the very early stages of my essay, I have already done a fair amount of research on sports. I have researched the origins of sports, how and why sports started, and the magnitude of the sports industry today for the introduction paragraph. In general, I am not a fan of researching. Personally, it requires a topic that I am very interested in for myself to genuinely enjoy researching. Although I would not describe it as fun, this topic particularly does interest me I have not minded researching it thus far in my essay.
I chose to research if personality traits are passed down through genetics. This is something I have always thought about, it has actually kept me up at night. I have already pursued in this topic a little. Last summer I listened to a book about this topic. I learned a lot during the book but it was mainly theory. I'm doing more research and its promising. I don't think I will have any problems finding information to support my claim. Geneticist have been doing research containing this information for years. They are finding new information all the time and are nearing the answer. This is really exciting, I really love learning about genetics and I want to pursue a career in it. I hope doing this research will open my eyes to new doors to education and also understanding myself. I hope those who read my essay will experience this too because I feel that learning about genetics and your genes is very important.
I am researching the topic of why humans keep pets. I think this topic is absolutely fascinating, and I love researching this. The hardest part of research is narrowing down the information. With a book, there are over one hundred pages to choose from and picking the right sections can be challenging at times. Other than narrowing stuff down, I’m actually enjoying the research. When researching something you enjoy and can be invested in, it can be really fun. Learning about the psychology behind why humans keep pets is interesting. As a pet owner, learning about why we keep pets is intriguing. Pets somewhat resemble babies in the fact that they are cute, so as humans, we instinctively want to take care of them. Also, they can provide companionship and fulfill the need people have to feel loved. When we do not feel accepted by society, we always know that our pets will be there for us. Dogs are really good at responding to human emotions and can tell when we are sad or distressed.
I have chosen to research and write about why people find nature as a good therapy tool. I chose to write about nature therapy because it is something I am very interested in and something I use to relax. I am in the early stages of my essay but have started to do some research on the topic. I have started finding some very interesting information on how people are starting to use this type of therapy more and more rather than conventional therapy techniques. Overall, I am enjoying researching this topic because it interests me and I use it. It might be somewhat difficult to write about this though because I am not completely familiarized with the whole concept yet. I would not call the research fun, I would rather call it interesting and informative. This essay is the most difficult for me so far because I need to actually research the topic because I am not completely educated on it yet, but soon I will be.
So far, I haven’t learned very much about my topic because I have barely started researching at all. I just decided on what my topic is going to be and I haven’t had enough time to research much about it. I have learned that there are two main factors that can cause a supernova to appear. They are specific to the size of the star that is dying. The first is for large stars that run out of fuel and inevitably collapse under their own gravity which causes large explosions to occur over the surface of the rest of the star. The second possible cause is that of a smaller star or dwarf star. They don’t have much fuel themselves but they can take mass from other stars which could cause them to collapse similar to the larger stars. I still have much more to research for my essay and I think it could turn out to be an intriguing assignment. This topic is more interesting than I had predicted.
For my essay, I chose to do the topic of bullying. I just started researching today and I have learned more than I previously knew, and I'm guessing that's a good sign. I do. not know if I would consider researching this topic fun but it definitely is interesting and spikes my interest more on how I can help people. I just finished my thesis statement and the first page of my essay. So far I have learned that a majority of bullies are school aged children; I found this kind of interesting because I feel like I see a lot of bullying among older men and women trying to compete with eachother. I am not someone who gets bullied, but I do not believe that we have a huge bullying problem in our school–considering other schools–at least that I can see on a daily basis. Based on my research so far, the most interesting piece of information I have learned is that 39% of high school students don't speak out when they are bullied; I find this ridiculous because I would be on someones butt so fast if I saw them being mean to someone else. My topic so far, although, is pretty interesting.
For my causal essay, I decided to compose “Why do Colleges Value and Award a High ACT Score? I learned so far that it forces takers to handle stress and think fast. That not all stress is bad and that there are some positive outcomes. Stress makes you more alert and it shows that you care about that certain task. Stress is used alongside fast decision making in professions like lawyers and health care providers. I also learned that the ACT encourages you to create a study habit. Making time to plan and study every day helps lower stress and prepares you for your next test or exam. It is great to get into a studying habit in grade school, so it makes it easier to carry that over in college and later in life. I wouldn't say that this is fun–maybe because I am researching stress and the ACT– it is interesting learning how to deal with stress.
I have chosen to write about why people have phobias. A phobia is an excessive and irrational fear reaction. The "fear" can be triggered by a certain place, person or situation. I chose this topic just out of curiosity but haven't done much research on it yet. I have looked up some basic information on some of the most popular phobias among people nowadays. Some of the common phobias include Acrophobia- fear of heights, Pteromerhanophobia- fear of flying, and Claustrophobia -fear of having no escape. It was very interesting to see the many different phobias people have. Many of the phobias I discovered during my research was really surprising because I would have never thought people feared those things. I think this topic will be very easy and fun to do research on.
I choose to write my causal essay on why America transformed from a small isolationist nation to a huge global superpower. During my research, I learned about the many factors that influenced America's growth. I studied how the country underwent a huge period of industrialization, revolutionizing its economy and opening it up to the world stage. The inventions of innovative American scientists flooded the markets, putting the United States on the map. I researched how the world wars impacted America's growth, with a focus on how its devastation ended European dominance. Through this, I saw how world conflict reshaped the world and opened it up for a new global leader. Finally, I saw how America's desire for expansion, beginning with its push west and ending with its quest for colonies, grew the country's spheres of influence and made it into the huge nation it is today. In the end, I found this research project to be very enlightening and interesting, and I enjoy creating the essay that I am putting together.
In the world today, there are no phenomena more discussed than the importance of climate change. As such, I found this the perfect topic to examine for my casual essay. So far, I have explored numerous unexpected causes of this pernicious problem. From natural sources such as volcanos and El Niño to those originating from humans, I have arduously explored the massive amount of data available. Using this information, I was able to compose a variety of questions that I have sent to five US colleges in the hope of receiving a valuable response. Throughout this process, I have thoroughly enjoyed spending my time researching. I am a neophile; since I was young, I have always loved learning new things. In fact, I was even willing to spend six-weeks in California doing biochemical research for a college last summer. In essence, I find this expository writing much more enjoyable than creative writing.
The topic I chose to write about is the main causes and psychological reasoning behind murder. This topic has interested me more and more as I continue my research. Seeing the many reasons that someone decides to commit this awful crime is intense. I have learned that majority of murder cases are done because the person involved has some sort of mental and psychological issue. When these issues are not taken care of, this is the result. I have also learned that most of the time, the person behind the murder has some sort of past that involves a struggling childhood. For example, one case that I read was about a man who grew up in a divorced house, and his father had been abusive towards him and was also an alcoholic. Pasts like these trigger some types of behavior later on in their lives. While I have been researching and writing this paper, I have learned a lot, and I am enjoying what I am learning about this topic.
I decided to research why Beatlemania was such a big thing and why the Beatles blew up the way they did. I enjoy Beatles songs and am interested in the topic. I also wanted to research something less serious and more silly for this essay to give myself a bit of a break from serious school subjects. In the past few years, I have found that I really enjoy researching, especially when researching a topic that I care greatly about or am interested in. Taking in knowledge and learning cool facts about different subjects is something that I enjoy a lot. I wish more school projects were geared towards things that I enjoy researching. It would make it a lot easier to do those projects if they were. I am grateful that this class allows me to write about topics I am more passionate about because I procrastinate less and don't dread writing my essays.
I am researching how Generation Z is affected by anxiety and depression more than previous generations. I think this is an interesting topic to research because it is about something that affects people in our school everyday. I have learned that most teens are stressed due to stress from school, loneliness, and relationships. 70% of teens report being depressed or knowing someone that has depression.
I think that researching can be fun-- especially when learning about a topic that interests you. When you are conversing with someone it feels good to know what you are talking about. Being able to make well-educated responses makes people respect your opinion more. Sometimes researching is not fun. Researching things that do not interest you is boring and no one wants to do it. I think that the thing that is the worst about researching is having to cite your sources. I totally get that plagiarism is not good; nevertheless, there are so many different rules with citations that it overwhelms me.
To be quite frank, researching on a topic of my choice and gaining other's perspectives on something that interests me is quite enjoyable. Why we listen to music is my topic dealing with the reasoning as to what motivates people to listen to music. So far, the only reason that I have been able to fully research has been the need to listen to music to regulate the mood of a person. The mood is a very vast subject—dealing with multitudes of emotions and factors that can affect lives as adolescents, adults, and in-between. My research supports my prediction that music is very dependent on the individual listening; in fact, I have found the one of the main reasons behind listening to music has to deal with personality and the enjoyment that one receives from listening to music. I enjoy learning new things, but I also enjoy expanding my knowledge on topics that interest me. Both are currently happening during the crafting of this essay because I am definitely a dedicated listener of music, but I didn't know all of the facts that have to deal with reasoning as to why we listen to music. Overall, this essay has been quite informative for me—seeing as that the topic that I have chosen to write about is something that I relish, I feel that I will appreciate this essay and gain great knowledge on the subject that I have chosen.
I choose to write and research about why are teens addicted to social media for my causal essay topic. I choose this topic because I feel it is rather easy to write about. I have grown up with technology and or social media my whole life. My generation is one of the generations targeted saying that we are too addicted to our phones. I am in the beginning stages of my essay and I have just now started research about my topic. So far in my research I found out some reasons why people use and get addicted to social media. I have also found charts showing the percentages of what age groups use certain apps on social media. I would not say that the research for my topic is fun, as there is so much that needs to be done like getting multiple amounts of sources such as books, websites, emails, and surveys. But the research has proved to be very interesting and also very informative.
I chose to do my Causal essay on why we set expectations and/or why we have them. I believe that anything that we choose to write or talk about no matter what it is can have a fun aspect to it if we have a good attitude. I have enjoyed researching for this essay because I am gaining knowledge I didn't previously have. The human mind is a very interesting thing. It is very complex and performs functions for us all the time. Without it, we literally would not be able to function. I have learned that expectations are premeditated. Meaning that we don't have to set them, we choose to set them. I have also learned that just because you set an expectation for yourself doesn't necessarily mean you will reach or make that expectation happen/come true. In children, sometimes they can't distinguish the difference between reality and their expectations. Even from a young age, we are already putting some form of pressure on ourselves. I have also learned that we tend to set our hopes and our happiness on fulfilled expectations. Though this isn't necessarily negative, we shouldn't rely on expectations to make us happy. Expectations are something that we don't need in society but they have shaped how people behave and think.
I chose to write my causal essay on what drives people to play sports. I believe that it is a topic I have a great interest in and find it easy for me to write about. Sports are a big part of my life and I love playing most. Some people think that they are played just for fun, however. While this is true, it is not the only reason people play. I am going to dig deeper into the psychological reasons for playing sports. What drives athletes to devote so much time into a game. I like this topic because I have thought about it before. I want to uncover the real purpose of it. With the research I have done, I have found that the biggest reasons people play are unexpected. The psychological aspect of it plays a way bigger role. I have found that most players don't even like the sport they are in. The research has been easier than I expected and I am finding good information about my topic. It helps when you care about the topic and are not writing about some old book or author you have no interest in. All in all, I am confident about going further into this topic.
I have chosen to write my essay on the topic of what we call “shower thoughts”. From this research, I found out that the reason we feel most inspired and our greatest ideas come to us while we're in the shower is because of the chemicals that our brain releases when we are relaxed. Specifically the chemical dopamine. Being in the shower creates a very relaxed environment, which allows our brain to thrive and make what we could call insightful connections or rather shower thoughts. Being in the shower has a routine that our brains do not require much to follow, which allows our mind to wander off and come up with these creative and innovative ideas that normally we take hours trying to think of. Showering also can be considered a distraction for our brains, therefore they become more active since they are not focused on a specific topic. I have enjoyed researching this topic a lot so far and I am also excited to keep researching and finding out more.
I decided to write my causal essay on the topic pertaining to why humans perceive color in the manner they do. Upon my research, I was easily able to state what may seem to be the obvious scientific background and genetic makeup of the human eye. Besides the obvious, I chose three main points of color in literature, color in nature, and color in the psychological aspect of colors affecting or relating to current emotions we may experience. Delving deeper into the subject has allowed me to study the anatomy of the brain and eye along with how sociological manners can be added for more benefits. I wanted to explore color in literature as there are many instances in which colors have been mixed or changed from how we see them today. For example, the parting of the Red Sea. Even though this was a literary error, what if it wasn't and was supposed to be interpreted as red. Were all the colors able to be perceived? Was there no name for the color blue? This ties into the question of how blue is not naturally occurring in nature, so is this why blue is the hardest color to be able to determine? All together the questions can form into another one of the psychological aspects of how color is perceived. How did authors come to the conclusion of a red sea? A violet sheep? Did their emotions affect their writing and how things in nature or general items become distorted in color? These questions leave me wanting the answer as to just how humans and species alike are able to see seven, if not more colors.
I have decided to write about what makes some people an introvert while others an extrovert. I have not done as much research as I was hoping to have done by now due to my inability to make a decision on what I wanted to write about. However, now knowing what I want to write my essay over, I have done a little bit of research to start. Most of the information I am finding so far is information that I have already known. This is most probably due to the fact that this is a topic that I have had an interest for in the past and previously had done research on it to learn more about. I found this topic very interesting because I have changed from one extreme to the other. In the past, I used to be a very shy and introverted kid that did not like talking much; however, now I enjoy talking to others and am a much more outgoing person. I look forward to seeing where this essay goes and being able to do more research on a topic that I can relate to personally.
I chose to write about why people feel the need to buy name-brand clothes. I decided to write about this because I always find myself wanting to have the most expensive things. I recently realized that just because it is more expensive doesn't mean that it is better. Name-brand clothing can look "cool" but I am starting to wonder why it is such a big deal. After researching my topic I have come to the conclusion that buying name-brand clothing is completely and utterly pointless. The main reason people buy name-brand clothes is that they feel the need to "fit in" or look "popular". Researching this topic has lead me to come up with the idea that people buy expensive things because they are concerned about what others think about them. After writing this essay I have learned that what we think is important is actually the complete opposite once you grow older. Having name-brand stuff does not define you as a person and it is completely pointless.
I chose to write a partner essay with Abby Erkonen. We decided that it would be interesting to write about why there is a rise in anxiety and depression in Generation Z. We chose to write about this because it is something we are both very interested in. There are many things that I found fascinating while researching these mental illnesses. I have learned that anxiety is the most common mental disorder that people have and have read that one in every eight kids between the ages of 13-18 has dealt with anxiety at some point in their life. I also learned that more than half the people that are diagnosed with depression and/or anxiety are not receiving treatment. This surprised me because I do not think that mental health is something to take lightly. As we write our essay, we mention that the anxiety and depression that people are facing could be due to academic stress, loneliness, and social media. I do enjoy researching for my essay because this topic is very interesting to me since I know many people that struggle with these mental disorders. Over the next week, I am excited to keep researching in order to grow my knowledge in this area.
I chose to write my essay on Deja Vu. The reason for choosing this topic was the mysteries behind it. I haven't done much research prior to this essay so picking it made me learn a lot more about the unknown topic. Deja vu is something that almost everyone has had in their lifetime and is one of the biggest mysterious with no real answer behind why we get it. Many people try to explain deja vu but there is not one true explanation rather it is what you believe it is. Some define it as there is a split-second delay in transferring information from one side of the brain to the other. There is strong backed evidence in this explanation which is why I want to continue to research to find a clear way to explain the mystery. I find this topic fun to research because every site brings different explanations and I am learning a totally bizarre subject. With every website brings new knowledge to me.
I chose to write my essay on why people love dogs so much. Loving and being attracted to dogs, especially the cute and cuddly dogs, is very common. You don't meet many people who don't like dogs. My research methods so far have been to conduct a survey and send it out to as many of my peers and family members as I can. The survey asks the subjects questions about if they have dogs, if they like dogs, why they like dogs, which kind of dogs they prefer and so on. I have enjoyed the surveying process because it helps connect the facts I present in my essay to what people I know say. I am currently trying to find a book on why humans have such a special bond with dogs. If I can't find a book that specific, I will try to find another that explains our attraction to pets or just the general explanation of our relationship with animals.
In my life, I find myself constantly analyzing society and questioning it. For instance, why do we base our social status off of materialistic items, such as expensive cars, name-brand clothing, and the latest iPhone? Why are "likes" and comments so important to us on our social media posts? The research I have been putting in is actually very informative and very entertaining. I was very happy to already have a reply from an SDSU professor. Unfortunately, my questions were a little bit vague at first so I needed to clarify. The professor was very professional and it was nerve-wracking trying to send a professional email back that had no errors. I learned a lot of things during my research. I learned that if people have high self-esteem they do not fear rejection. Another thing I learned is how vulnerable we are when we are constantly seeking the approval of others. I am not done researching but I am wondering if one resolution to society's insecurity lies in parents, role models, and teachers.
I chose to write my essay about what types of events trigger serial killers. I chose to write about this because this is a topic that interests me and I have always loved watching TV shows about the analyzation of serial killers like Criminal Minds. I have only just begun my research for my essay but I have found out that many disastrous events can trigger serial killers like death (especially of loved ones), abuse, neglect, depression, divorce, disease, etc. More than one of these things would have to happen to an unimaginable extent for someone to be converted into a serial killer. The actual cause of the question of why serial killers kill is still up in the air. There is no definitive answer but there are many ideas that have been thrown around as to why they do. The research portion of the essay is fun because it is something that is outside of the box and something that we have yet to do in this class thus far. I have had some struggles finding information regarding my topic but it is still fun digging into the internet to find statistics about a subject that I love.
As of right now, I haven’t decided on my causal essay topic but I’ve narrowed it down to about two options. Both are psychology based questions, which is what I’m most interested in, so the research hasn't been too stressful. Being someone that enjoys learning about how people and their brains work, I’d like to go more in-depth with a prompt that allows me to do as such. There have been a few questions I’ve waffled on just because I was able to relate my own experiences to them, but then again finding a topic that I don't know a whole lot about would be fun to research as well. So far, the majority of articles that I have read have been about mental health issues and the factors that contribute to certain mental illnesses so there is a decent chance that my essay will be about something along those lines. Whatever I end up writing about, my main goal is to just learn more about something that’s intriguing.
The topic I have chosen for this research essay is "Why people commit murder". I have always enjoyed watching shows like Criminal Minds and find the study of serial killers and murderers to be somewhat fascinating. I believe that being able to determine why people kill can help prevent the deaths of others. So far, I have done a bit of research on a few specific cases. These will help back up a few of my different motives. I currently have emailed a few professors about the topic and I am looking forward to hearing what they have to say in response. Each of the professors has a doctorate in criminology and psychology and has done studies on serial killers. Currently, I have discovered a lot of new motives that murderers have other than just mental illness. A few of the motives I have encountered are different types of financial greed, lust, and power. Once I discovered these different categories I was able to place a few commonly known murders into each category.
It took me a while to really decide what I wanted to write about and research. It was either between "Why do people like spicy food? or "Why do people enjoy gambling so much?" Ultimately I decided to write about why people enjoy gambling because I felt like there would be more information out there for me to find, as well as is more interesting to me. I think that getting all the requirements for this essay is going to be somewhat of a challenge. I have created a survey. It was hard to know which questions I should ask to use in my essay. I also think that finding an actual book to use for a source might be difficult as well. I do not know where to start with that. Maybe I should look further into getting myself a library card so I could actually go get a book. So far, it has been entertaining to learn the facts and psychology behind why people like to gamble. I would like to know what it would be like to be inside the mind of a gambler. I also really enjoy the statistics behind it all, and it will be enjoyable to learn more.
The freedom of this essay is very enjoyable for me. Since we are allowed to decide on a topic based on anything that interests us, the possibilities are endless. It was difficult for me to chose a topic for my essay because there are so many different paths I could go with my essay. For my casual essay topic, I chose to write about the many reasons that people lie. Lying is something that most people are faced with at least one time in a single day. People lie for a wide variety of reasons and I think my topic is something that I can go into definite detail with throughout the extensiveness of my essay. I have started some research on my own and it has been very interesting. I have emailed a professor from the University of Minnesota that has interests and studies in lie detection; I am eager to read the feedback I receive. Getting a different perspective from a professor will help me immensely when constructing my essay.
I decided to write my causal essay about the fears of public speaking. As for the research, I have found very interesting information about general fears in society due to a phobia known as glossophobia: the fear of public speaking. In my search for answers, I am looking for why many people are afraid of public speaking, why they are scared, and why people tend to rush and stutter along during presentations in front of other people. I have emailed a communications professor from Augustana University in Rock Island, Illinois. I am still waiting for a response from Professor Donna Hare. I chose this topic due to myself's outdated irrational fear of public speaking. In my experience, the only way to conquer this fear is to actually do this. I have joined Oral Interpretation and am now on the road to successfully speaking in front of people and overcoming my glossophobia. I am honestly on a search to find out more about where this fear originates from and if there is a way to start without these fears.
I decided to write this casual essay with a partner, Kylie Felderman. We decided to write about why people feel the need to buy name-brand clothing. We both really love having expensive clothing and we like the name brands that are on the clothes but are starting to wonder what's the big deal about them. After researching, we found out that some main reasons that people buy name-brand clothing are because they want to fit in, look cool, or because it is trendy in today's society. After learning the main reasons that people buy this clothing, I have come to the conclusion that buying expensive clothes with a brand on it, when you can get the same clothing without the brand, it not important. I feel like as we are younger, everyone thinks that you have to have nicer clothes otherwise you will get made fun of. As people grow older, I feel like they grow out of that stage and just don't care what people think about them, as much as they did in high school. Another reason people pay for expensive clothing is just that they have money, and have nothing else to spend it on. I haven't researched that much about my topic, but I hope to find out more about my topic and add that into my essay.
I chose to write about why the sky is blue. Since I know modern science has already answered this question, my essay will instead focus on what ancient cultures had for answers. I only recently chose this topic, so I haven’t been able to do any research on it quite yet. I expect the ancient people’s answers will have something to do with the gods they worshipped or some sort of other myth. Personally, I don’t like writing or researching, so this assignment is not fun for me. I find both very boring and hard to do because I have no passion for writing. Since writing is boring to me, it also goes very slowly because I would rather do anything else at that moment, and oftentimes, I do.
I have not learned very much from my researching. My topic is why we watch tragedies in movies and books. This is always something I have wondered and had a question about and I really want to dig deep into why we even bother watching something that makes us sad and depressed. The main problem I am having with my essay is I can not determine where to get my sources from. A lot of websites online have blogs on why we have tragedy. But blogs aren’t really something you can rely on and trust. I think my topic would be a fun one to cover and it is something I have always wanted to know. However, finding the cites I need is proving to be very difficult and is leaving me very frustrated. I know I can email some colleges and ask some English professors but I can not figure out where to get all my other sources. I think once I overcome this obstacle my essay will become a lot easier to compose.
I chose to write a causal essay with a partner, Madi Albertson. We are researching the underlying reasons people commit crimes. There are the obvious reasons like drug addiction or poverty. We are trying to find the deeper reasons crime occurs. So far we have come up with three reasons: selfishness, apathy, and some have no other option. I have enjoyed the freedom of this essay because it gives you the opportunity to research something that interests you and I am able to learn more about this topic. I have emailed professors that study criminology and psychology. I have received one response but sadly it was the professor saying he is unable to answer my questions to his commitment to a project he is working on. I am hoping to get more responses back because I feel this will give a good insight into a criminal's mind. One thing Madi and I have struggled with are finding reliable sources that give strong statistics about criminals.
I chose to research the purpose people still hunt in today's society. I have been looking into what satisfaction hunting brings to people and why society as a whole is full of hunters. These main points that I am researching are the following: the alone time that people desire, earning their meals (conquering nature), and fitting into society. So far, I have learned that a large percentage of the United States hunts, and the largest percentage of hunting is deer. Deer hunting is often done alone and that is one of the main points I am making. I have yet to continue my research on the other two topics as well as more on this one. I am also going to conduct a survey in the school to get a more personal example of hunting because there are a lot of hunters in our school and area. It took me a while to find the right topic to type about, but now that I do, I will be able to find the appropriate resources to back my claims up. I do find this researching fun because I enjoy the subject I chose and I am learning stuff that I didn't know about before.
Overall this causal essay has made me think outside the box. In Law class, we have been learning the reasons each might commit a crime, but it's the obvious reasons, so it made Jenna and I have to dig deeper into more profound ideas/facts. Obviously, people commit crimes because of their environment, social class, and their upbringing. The unobvious reasons we found behind criminal activity were because of fewer options, personal gain, and apathy. I think exploring this topic on a different level has opened my eyes to the deeper thoughts of criminals and their emotions when committing a crime. Crime has always been very interesting to me and as of now I plan to minor in that in college so learning the why behind criminal activity is riveting. Crime will never go away because people will always be interested in devious activities for their own personal benefit or just straight boredom. This paper forces me to dig deeper and I have learned so much because of it.
Considering how often car crashes affect people's lives and cause more deaths than anything in the world, I decided to make an essay on underlining causes of car crashes. We all understand that drunk driving and driving without a license can be very dangerous for everyone around us. This is a very difficult essay because we never actually hear about any other reasons why car crashes occur. Finding information and getting sources is my main concern with this topic. What other ways cause crashes that we don't know about? The only thing we know for sure is that most car crashes we hear about were preventable. So, I decided to do some digging and figure out other car crashes that occur that aren't preventable. It's a very interesting topic, especially with how this information could change how our country's driving could change and make us, the people, more intellectual about what could go wrong.
I chose to research how screens are beneficial to us humans. It is easy for people to say screens are bad for our health and most people focus on how bad they are. Instead of molding into society's beliefs, I am writing my paper on why computers are very beneficial to us and how the positives greatly outweigh the negatives. As I start my research, I am very interested in learning how increased screentime affects humans. Although we are told many reasons by parents, teachers, and other kids, I am excited to read about the proven, scientific reasons why we should limit our screentime. I will most likely compose an antithesis paragraph with all of this information. I recently chose my topic so I have not been able to do any deep research but I am excited to go to the library today and check out a book I will be able to use. Whether I will do a poll, email a professor, or interview I do not know. Now that I know my topic I will be able to easily start writing.
The topic I chose is one that every teenager can relate to, vaping. Every teen has at some point encountered this before. I am writing this not only to learn more about what is relevant to us but to show others why it can be detrimental and how the habits get picked up. There has been one thing that I have found interesting so far during my research. I have seen that vaping today is being compared to smoking in the '60s. Not much background research had gone into smoking at the time, but today we know that smoking is very bad for you and can cause many health problems if you have been doing it for a while, and we might be able to make that same connection with vaping. I am excited to begin more research as to why people do it and how the companies manage to appeal to the audience of younger people.
I am writing my essay over why teens/youth decide to commit suicide. I chose this topic because I think that it is sadly becoming more prominent in today's generation and the reasonings behind why someone might decide to commit suicide can be seen as being very broad. I have been researching how both mental and environmental factors can have an impact on suicidal thoughts in teens. Through a study, I found that broken homes and a lack of structure while at home can spark teens to start having suicidal ideas. I hope to find more information about how genetics and hormones can play a part in how susceptible the youth are to depression and suicide. My topic is, of course, not a very fun thing to write about but I did have a previous interest in the psychological side of suicide and mental illnesses while trying to further prevention awareness. Even though trying to get the essay started has been difficult, I am sure that I will be able to compose an essay that will help people understand why this is such an issue today.
I chose to research and write about bullying. I have always wondered why people chose the path of being mean to others rather than just simply being kind. I do not understand how an individual's first instinct is to put someone down rather than build them up. I came into this essay knowing that bullying is a very common occurrence and that there can be verbal, cyber, and physical bullying. I did not know that every one in two people are bullied before they reach the age of twenty. The most common reasons for bullying are for a sense of power, purpose, and control over someone. I found out that if you are bullied you become twice as likely to become a bully yourself. When someone is bullied they try to conceal what makes them unique thinking that they are the problem but no one ever thinks about what is wrong with the bully to make them act this way. I think researching this is fun and I am learning a lot about the mind of a bully.
Most people who know me know that I like to ask a lot of questions. I always wonder about things and want to know why a lot of things are the way that they are or why people do things that they do. This causal essay is perfect for me to explore a topic that I've always wondered about. I have decided to choose the question of "Why do people fall in love?" Some people may have an answer to this question and think that it's obvious but I want to know more about the psychological reasons that humans fall in love with a significant other. So far my research has only been about reasons we fall in love that are pretty well known. Such as physical attraction, similarities in personality, and so on. I have learned something that interested me which is that the more a person wants a relationship, the lower their self-esteem is, and the more likely they are to fall in love. I have a lot more research to do but it is fun for me to learn about.
From my research, I have learned more about how the most important and intimate part of communication can also be the most difficult. Maintain eye contact can have multiple meanings. If you lock eyes for too long, it may seem creepy and make you feel anxious or uneasy. If you don't make any eye contact at all, you may come off as disrespectful and immature. One thing that I have found really interesting is how some people don't make eye contact because they feel vulnerable and feel as if they are really small. This may happen to someone who is talking to another who is of high position or larger statue. I have found this essay very fun and interesting because the topic I am writing about is something I experience personally. I am trying to find more sources of the psychological part of maintaining eye contact and how it affects our daily lives.
My partner, Grant Gunderson, and I have decided to write and research about how some people can be naturally gifted in English subjects and struggle with mathematics and vice versa. We are putting together a survey for all of the classes to see whether students have a preference in either subject and if there is a direct correlation between those results and the genders of the students. Other research that we have conducted has been challenging because you have to dive into what you are really asking of the information. Though we may know the direction that we want to take our essay, you have to find a way to phrase your questions in a way that could be answered by a professor, author, student, or other reading materials. We have found that the phenomenon that we are inquisitive upon is something others also ask themselves, but the scientifical evidence behind the reasoning of it is yet to be fool-proof. We will continue working hard to answer these questions for ourselves and put together a sublime, well-written essay!
Lights, camera, action. Places. These are all words used within the acting career. I decided to write and research on a topic having to do with the very word 'places'. I am choosing to write about the very well known musical, "Waitress." Waitress is a Broadway musical about a girl and her terrible life. She finds out that she is pregnant with her abusive husband's kid, and she feels trapped. She wants to enter a pie-baking contest to try to win enough money to free her from her husband; however, it doesn't work out for her. She has an affair and thinks her life is over. When she has her baby, she divorces her husband and ends her affair. She then inherits the cafe she works at and her life turns around for the better. This musical is a whirlwind of emotions, and I think that people like it for that very reason. I like the musicals that make me feel all the emotions. I love to feel sad and happy. I fall in love with the characters as the story develops. I wanted to do my research to see why that is. I wanted to know if others felt that way too. I have not done a lot of research yet, but I hope to do a ton very soon. I plan to interview a recent USD musical theater graduate to listen to her thoughts on why musicals like Waitress become phenomenons. This is a very cool essay topic, and I am super excited to write about it.
While I was originally going to and was mid-research of the Multiverse and parallel universes, I remember the original topic that I wanted to do, the Polish Winged Hussars. Based on the limited research that I have completed as of right now, the Hussars were successful in a variety of battle across the centuries, in WW2 the polish cavalry successfully charged Germany Panzer tanks, and in early centuries were responsible for keeping the Ottomans from continuing conquering the rest of Europe in the battle of Vienna. Beyond that the winged hussars many more victories before they got rotated out due to the increasing power of firearms and of Napolean era tactics getting rotated out in favor of the guerilla warfare that was popularised in the success of the American revolution. So even as they were rotated into a more scouting and "parade" based unit to raise morale, they still accomplished so much within history even if they should have not won (like the German tanks).
My causal essay topic is why do people have phobias. This topic was intriguing to me since I do have many phobias that haunt me, as well as other people. There are phobias about everything from the most common like spiders to the oddest like the feeling of peanut butter in someone's mouth. Anyone and everyone can develop a phobia, also about anything. Recognizing new phobias is common as young children or medical patients who have ongoing conditions or after brain-related injuries. It is most common to develop a phobia in childhood, teenage, and early adult years. This usually stops around the age of 30. Besides some medical conditions, many can be formed due to a stressful impact that has happened to your life. With time, patience, and even medical treatment these phobias can be treated in different ways. One common treatment plan is being gradually exposed to the phobia, this is called desensitization or self-exposure therapy. I am thrilled to learn more about a topic that is very usual among all people.
I have decided to write about why teens are more likely to be rebellious. The reasons that I have gone more in-depth with is because they want to fit in, get attention from parents and friends, boredom, and the brain is not fully developed. I have only done research about why they want to fit in and about the attention they crave. I have only gotten research from websites, but I am excited to see what professors think. I have learned that kids try to fit in as early as first grade and it continues all through life. In order to fit in, teenagers are often pressured by peer pressure. Teenagers with not as many friends are more likely to be influenced because they do not want to lose the few friends they have. Also, younger teens that hang out with older teens are more likely to be influenced because they want to prove themselves. About attention, I have learned that negative actions get attention more easily than positive actions. I have not found this fun. I think it is because I picked a random topic that I am not super interested in.
I have decided to write this essay with a partner. The topic that we chose to write about, and research is "Why people internalize their emotions." I am very familiar with this topic because I have been able to help a lot of influential people in my life who have struggled with internalizing their emotions. Internalizing my own emotions is something I occasionally struggle with, as well. Mainly I have researched the causes and different reasoning behind why people internalize their feelings instead of talking about them or reaching out to someone for help. For the most part, the things I have read are things that I knew and have already been educated on. I would like to learn more about the significant psychological causes and the possibility of past experiences/events affecting them. I still have a lot of research to do, but I am finding it very fascinating and beneficial learning about something I have struggled with before. This will give me a further understanding of why people may bottle up their feelings and emotions. I hope that it helps me know what questions to ask and where to begin when helping people.
I choose to write and research the English Language. I was curious why the words we use every day were created and the grammar we try so hard to learn is formed. I have always been curious about why everyone speaks a different language instead of having a universal language. English, the primary language of the world, is also one of the hardest languages to learn. I have found it is so hard to learn because it is a combination of about ten different languages from the European continent. Its roots are from germanic tribes, and has since evolved as it spread across the world. I have found researching the English Language fun. I have enjoyed learning about something that I have never really liked before. It has made a new interest in English. I have never enjoyed english as much as I have in this class
I have decided to write about Disney and why it is considered to be the "Happiest Place on Earth." While by many there will always be those who have had a traumatic or unfortunate experience at Disney. Envision Main Street, U.S.A. The buildings on either side surrounding the street leading you deeper into the park. At the end of the road, you see a statue of Walter Elias Disney holding Mickey's hand. The statue helps to lead to the magic of the parks. This is because it is idealistic showing that reality and fiction can mingle. Disney employees go through extensive training before interacting with guests. In fact, Disney employees are given training on how to live themselves by Walt Disney's Visions when working. There are multiple stories on the web on how employee(s) changed someone's whole experience at the parks. A great example of this deals with pin trading. Little kids go around the parks wearing lanyards with Disney trading pins. Sometimes the backs fall off of the pins and you lose a pin. Teya once lost a pin and started crying–she was really little. Suddenly she was bombarded with three nearby cast members who showed her their pins and gave her one. You can also see stranger trading pins. Some people even walk right up to kids and ask them if they like any pins and want to trade for them. People desire for everyone to have a good day at the happiest place on earth. This is what makes Disney work. People going out of their way to be generous to others making sure they have a fantastic time. Personally, I have seen examples of ordinary people performing acts of magic(kindness) and seen 1st hand the effect these simple acts of kindness have.
I am writing about why people enjoy spicy food so much? My original thought was, why would someone want to put themselves through pain just to eat something that may put you through the pain. I have learned quite a lot of information from my research, my main goal was to do a lot of research quite a bit before I started my essay. It's actually quite interesting really, a lot of it from what I have found is the fact that it was one of the only spices that they could add to their food. I'm talking specifically about South America, and specifically Mexico. A lot of my research has told me that South America is the origin of spicy food. The main ingredient in spicy food seems to be the chili pepper which is originated in South America. This lone vegetable may be the very start of spicy food as we know it today, finding it in all sorts of food such as chili, tacos, burritos, may even be found in some Asian dishes.
I have always wondered why people choose one college over another. There are so many colleges out there and it is hard to distinguish what is better between certain colleges. Since I am now looking for a college to attend, it has been hard for me to find which college I like best. For my research, I am going to write about why people choose a certain college. People usually decide on what college they want based on the size, location, and what majors are held at the college. I found that some people will choose a college because it is has a good academic reputation and it will get good jobs after college. I also found that people will choose a certain college because of its size and location whether it is close to home or far from home. The final thing that I found was that people will choose a college because of its graduation percentage. This research paper is fun because I get to see why people choose a certain college. It is fun to see their stories about college and why they choose it.
The topic I have chosen for my causal essay is the Cross Race Effect. This effect describes the difficulty people have with identifying people from other races, and how it is easier for people to recognize people they are familiar with (tending to be people of their own race). I have enjoyed learning more about this effect and how it affects people today; especially in criminal cases of facial recognition, but I dislike having to use research for essays. The distaste I have for research papers stems from citing my sources. Using websites, books, videos, authors, etc., is very convenient and can be very useful when learning new things. Although I like to learn more about this topic, I do not like citing what I use to learn more. The different rules to cite different things have always confused me. Using my computer to find information on intriguing topics is something I greatly appreciate, but when I have to cite what I use I tend to get very frusturated.
I decided to write about a mental disease called Schizophrenia. I learned about it last year during psychology and it was the one disease that really intrigued me. I have always been curious about the brain and what caused Schizophrenia and how it all works so I decided to take this time to learn about it and write an essay. I knew the basics of Schizophrenia that if you have it you hear voices or see things that are not true. However, I did not realize how new Schizophrenia was compared to other mental diseases. It started to show up in the 19th century and it was called many different things such as démence précoce, adolescent insanity, and hebephrenia because many doctors did not know what was going on or what the causes were. I also learned so far that one cause of Schizophrenia is in the brain having problems with the neurotransmitters dopamine and glutamate. There is still much to learn and even doctors do not know how it all works, but it very interesting to learn about Schizophrenia and how it affects people.
When this essay was introduced to the class, I immediately knew that I wanted to write about something related to sports. After a lot of thought, I could not seem to find the right topic. Instead, I decided to write about “How Pets Increase Happiness.” I chose this because I have had pets my whole life. Whether its dogs, cats, fish or any other animal, these companions evoke special emotions only pet owners would understand. I have not been able to do any research yet, but I am excited to start. I’m curious to learn about the effects a pet has on a person's happiness. I am also interested in learning if there is any correlation between not owning a pet and depression. I plan on emailing a professor to hear their views. Writing is not usually very fun for me, but I think writing this essay will be very beneficial and fun.
My topic is why Esports, other known as televised gaming, is becoming popular and the changes it will cause to the world. Through researching, I have found out that many of the reasons why esports are becoming such a hit are because of streamers and the number of teenagers who play video games has drastically increased. Streamers are bringing massive amounts of attention to the video game world by racking in thousands of viewers per stream. This has caught the attention of news outlets like CNN and Fox News. These outlets are then making articles and videos about these people causing more popularity to come to that streamer. In return, bringing them more views and money. A year to two years ago when the massive battle royal game Fortnite was at its prime, the streamer NInja, would rack in millions of views per stream. This in return made him one of the richest internet "stars" alive at this current time. The attention gaming reviewed from this not only boosted the number of people playing games but it also normalized gaming. Overall, I have had fun finding research about this topic.
When writing this essay I learned that there are a lot more reasons why people go fishing. In that research, I decided to email 5 professors from Georgia as well as 1 professor from Oregon State, all of those professors were involved in fish or fishing in some way or another. Before receiving those responses I had thought that fishing provided only a source of relaxation and that it was a hobby. But, the email response that I got from Dr. Robert Bringolf and he showed me that fishing offers a source of fulfillment, pleasure, and a feeling that you conquered nature. I was struggling coming up with a topic in the beginning so I asked Coach C what I should do and he said why do people fish. Instantly I thought I can do that because that is something that I am passionate about and I know a lot about the topic. Also with the help of a few college professors, I think that I will be able to have fun completing the rest of this causal essay.
I have chosen to write about the various causes of criminal behavior. I did not initially know what I wanted to write about until I looked up ideas and this one stuck out to me. I have learned that there are numerous causes of crime which is because there are so many different types of crimes and it can not be brought down to just a few, but the various causes mostly stem from the environments that people live in and the experiences a person has. For example in urban areas like big cities crime rates are much higher and after researching I believe that is because statistically there are more people hence, more chances that there will be crime. I am interested to see what other factors cause crimes for example what drives people to the point of killing or if mental illness plays a part in crimes like shootings and such. Crime is such a vast topic with so many different factors and I find researching and learning about it to be very interesting.
The topic I chose to write about is why people use social media. I chose this topic because I did not have a topic yet, so this was a bit generic, but also intriguing as it is a part of nearly everyone's daily routine, or sometimes it is their entire lives. So far through a survey I have conducted as of today, Most of the data has proven the point that people use social media to talk with friends. Those friends are probably their close friends they see in person, which might defeat the purpose of networking outside of their already close group. I have also learned that social media has technically been around since nineteen ninety-five with the creation of Classmates.com. Social media has risen much more in the early 2010 decade with smartphones. I need to research about how people use it for entertainment and using social media as a news outlet.
The topic I have chosen regards to why people listen to certain genres of music. At first, I wanted to write about why people listen to music, but then I realized it is too vague and I decided to write about a more specific topic. I listen to music all the time and I listen to a lot of different genres of music. There are some days where I do not want to listen to a certain style of music and others where it is all I want to listen to. I then asked the question, "Why do I want to listen to this music and not that music?" So I have done some research and the majority of the answers have something to do with the listener's personality. Past experiences and experiences they desire have a drastic effect on what people want to listen to. I found it very interesting that a reason for people to listen to a certain type of music is to fit in. Why would anyone want to listen to something they do not like but do it anyway just so they can fit into a certain group? I have many questions about this topic and I hope I can find out as much as I can to make my essay well written.
I have decided to write my causal essay on the topic of art. I chose to write about art because I have always wondered what the purpose of it is, how it can help people, and why so many people enjoy it. In class, somebody said that patients with Alzheimer's disease use art to help them communicate with others. I found that very intriguing and decided to look further into it. I found out that there is more than one kind of memory. There are memories of feelings, sensibilities, unverbalized moral codes, and intuitions. Those kinds of memories are located in the right hemisphere of the brain and they remain intact much longer than memories in the verbal left brain. When patients with Alzheimer's are given art supplies, they are able to illustrate memories located in the right hemisphere of the brain. So far, that is all the research I have done and I have enjoyed it. Researching on the topic of "why art?" has been a fun experience for me because I have learned something new and it is a topic that intrigues me that I want to learn more about.
I have chosen to write my causal essay on why we have memories that we do, and why we forget other things. I find memory and neuroscience in general very interesting, but the psychological aspect of memory also intrigues me. I am also going to explore the topics of genetic memories and PTSD in my essay because they are interesting to me. I am also going to do a survey that shows that some of our memories can seem trivial at times, and point out the differences between long-term and short-term memory. So far, it's been pretty fun to read articles of people trying to give scientific explanations for an intangible thing like memory, and I think it will be a fun challenge to write about this topic myself. I also like that there is a lot of information and point-of-views on this topic, and I enjoy piecing the information together to get a coherent piece. It has been difficult to find a book about memory that isn't a work of fiction and is covering the same topic that I am writing about.
The topic I have chosen to write about relates to music. I'm talking about how Metallica is among the best bands in the history of music, regardless of genre. I'm going to be emailing someone, I don't know who yet, that will help explain my question as to why Metallica is among the greatest. Lyrically, their music is very compelling, with lyrics that relate to the listener. In my opinion, they are up there with Queen and The Beatles. While they may be classified as a totally different genre compared to Queen or The Beatles, they have adapted over time. During the '90s, thrash metal was dying down, and glam and grunge metal were rising. Metallica had to adapt because of the reason mentioned above. Some believe they sold out because they went mainstream but in reality, they adapted to gain a new audience, which they did. Many Metallica fans today listened to their music because it was radio-friendly; this is the reason why I listen to them. There are many other components I'll discuss in my essay as to why Metallica is among the best bands in the history of music.
I think that the research process has been more fun than I thought it would be so far. I am doing a lot of research before I even begin to write my essay, that way I have as much experience as I can before I start to write. I am writing on why people fear certain things and for what reasons. So far I have learned that anxiety leads to fear, and fear also leads to anxiety. They are hand in hand. You also have certain reactions for fearing something, like avoiding things or even sweating too much. I have learned that people tend to fear things often times for no reasons, but just because it can make them feel safer by doing so. If you are afraid of fire, you are going to stay away from it, therefore keeping you "safer" and less likely to get injured or killed in a fire related accident.
I have not started my essay (I am aware a rough draft is due tomorrow) for multiple reasons. One reason that I have not started is pending confirmation on my topic. I am very excited to start my essay because I want to write about Diabetes. My mother and my older brother deal with Diabetes and I want to learn more about it. I also want to know the differences and causes between Type 1 and Type 2 because social steryotypes are not correct. Many people think that Type 2 diabetes is caused by overeating but that is not exactly true. I have dug into some research to use for my sources and they are hard to understand. Regardless of the challenge, I want to understand what my family members deal with, to explain Diabetes to those who ask, and to write about something I do not know too many details about. I like to attempt challenging things, so I am excited to write this essay (whereas the topic is allowed).
For most, researching a topic is not much fun. Most times that is true for me as well. The times when I have the most fun with researching and writing are when I am researching a topic that I am interested in. This is why I chose to do the topic of "why do people travel?" This is interesting to me because when I am older I wish to travel the world. My dream job would be to be a travel photographer. I would travel the world, not only for pleasure but also to experience different cultures and to meet new people. I do wish to be able to go to some nice places where I will be able to relax from time to time, however. Throughout my research, I have found many different points that will help me with my essay. For example, most people travel in order to see a family member or loved one from time to time. But why? Why do we move far away so that it is required to travel long distances to see these people? Questions like these are what I am going to be answering in my essay. I enjoy researching when it comes to topics that I am interested in, such as this one.
I have chosen to write my essay about the causes of cancer. Through research, I have found that hereditary disposition, exposure to toxic or radioactive environments, and random chance are the three main reasons people can get cancer. Something interesting I learned was that 5 out of 10 cases of cancer are linked to genetics. Genetic changes that cause cancer can be passed down to offspring by the parents' germ cells (sperm or egg). This means that if your parent or somebody in your family is diagnosed with a specific type of cancer, you should get yourself checked for that same cancer. Also, another thing I learned is that cancer is everywhere. Not literally tumors laying around outside, but cancer-causing agents like the sun, pollution, processed foods, and for some, cigarettes are apart of our everyday lives. Meaning that cancer is almost entirely just a roll of the dice because you can get cancer from so many unavoidable factors. The one thing that can be avoided easily is cigarettes or other types of tobacco products. There are 3,800 chemicals in cigarettes and 40 of them have cancer-causing agents. I still have a lot more to learn but I think I have some very interesting points to be made in my essay.
In the beginning, I planned to write my causal essay on why there is a general fear of singing in front of others. It seems as though so many people don't want to sing and share how their voice sounds with others. However, I decided to broaden the topic and write on why there is a general fear of performing. Quickly after starting research, I found out some important information. There is actually a phobia of public speaking. This is Glossophobia, or in other words, speech anxiety. This can be tied to social anxiety as well. While I don’t think most people that fear public speaking and/or performing have social anxiety, I think it is good to note. The novel that I checked out from the library today also taught me that the feeling many people get from this action would be considered acute stress. This is when your adrenaline, heart rate, and other things along these lines increase for a short period of time and do not end up affecting people long term. I find this all fairly interesting and enjoy learning about it since performance anxiety is something I deal with even though performing is what I do quite often.
I decided to write about why people are indecisive. Actually, I was indecisive so that is why I ended up writing about it. After doing some research, I found out that one of the biggest reasons why people tend to be indecisive is because of social pressure. People are afraid to make choices because they are afraid that if they choose wrong, they will be shamed. Also, many people fear that their decisions might hurt someone else's feelings. Therefore, people choose not to make decisions because they would rather be indecisive than wrong or hurtful. Another huge cause of indecisiveness is the fact the people like to fit into society's "norm". We like to be like others so they accept us so we try not to be decisive because making choices shows your individuality. Many people like to be in a group and be independent, so they don't make decisions for themselves.
I chose to write my essay about why people lie and what leads them to. There is no doubt that people lie every day, whether they tell a white lie to a friend, or lie about their location the night before to their parents. In fact, through research, I have found that people lie on average of once or twice a day. When under pressure or in a situation I am nervous in, I will often find myself lying over something so unimportant just because of nerves. Through only a small amount of research, I have learned so much about the psychological reasons for lying. I found that most people lie when under pressure or simply searching for a reason to please others. Although, there are mental disorders that cause compulsive behavior and create a pathological liar. I am looking forward to researching further on this topic as well as further compose my essay.
I chose to write my essay about why people commit crimes. It seems that crime fills the headlines in today's news so I want to find out why. It turns out, that there are multiple reasons why people commit crimes and varies based on the person, circumstance, and many other factors that go all the way back to that person's childhood. I have found that the main reason people commit crimes is that they are either desperate, due to poverty or addictions to drugs and alcohol, they were neglected at a young age, or they have low self-esteem, while others do it for the sheer thrill of it, which I find very odd. And as it turns out, more people then you'd think have committed a crime. Whether it's something as minor as stealing a candy bar as a kid from the gas station or as major as robbing a bank. Researching this topic has been very interesting and fun. I have learned so much and have found that with each article I read, I see a new perspective in this debate.
While researching for my topic, I have found that it is very difficult to find things on Siouxland Library. There are many resources that give me better information and more information. It is much easier to write about my topic when I am given more information. Another thing I am finding difficult is getting a professor to respond to me. I have sent emails to a few different school’s sociology departments, and I am yet to get a response. Using good sites on the web, I have gotten some good information that is helping me make my essay much more accurate and factual. I have learned that there are even more aspects of bullying that I had never had a perspective on. I think reading other people’s blogs is helpful to get another perspective, but not good for writing, as I am trying to have my paper be more factual than opinionated.
I am writing my essay about why people love to travel. From my research, I have learned that are countless reasons people choose to travel. People use travel to get away from the chaotic work life and rewind in exotic places. People also travel to places of solitude where they can clear their minds and be with their spouses. I have also learned that if you like the topic you are researching, it goes a lot faster and you enjoy yourself a lot more. People that travel more seem to be happier and get the most out of life compared to the people who don't or can't travel as much. This helps when it comes to writing my paper because I enjoy what I am writing. The topic of traveling is very relevant to my life because I have traveled a lot in my life. That also makes it an easier/fun topic to research because I can use my own experience to relate to the topic.
The topic of my causal essay is the appeal of video games and why people play them. Video games have been one of my favorite hobbies for the longest time. I know the reason why I play them but what are other people’s reasoning. Researching the subject has not been entirely difficult as there plenty of articles of people listing their different evidence on why people play games. Reasons could be that video games are a form of escapism for people with harsher lives or it could simply be a fun way to spend time with friends. Finding a book that covers my topic I think will be the hardest part of my research. Will I have found some online PDFs that have not been that useful. Overall much of the information regarding why people play video games I already knew or suspected beforehand. So I mainly just have to find credible articles that provide substantial evidence for these reasons.

I am doing a partner essay about intelligence and whether it is inherited or acquired. Also, we are asking why some people excel in certain areas but not others. What I have learned from researching thus far is that the answer is not set in stone. With such a complex concept as intelligence, it can't be defined by just a black and white answer. What I can say for sure is that genetics does play a role, not the whole role but some. The main differentiation that I am finding whilst researching is how much of a role do genetics play. All in all, I do believe this essay is fun. I had no idea about this topic and it's actually incredibly interesting to read about. I know, at least for me, that I am incredibly curious to learn the answer. Again, I am not sure if I'll find the answer, but it will be good to at least be informed on the subject of intelligence.
For my causal essay topic, I am researching attraction. I recently have focused on researching why we as humans are attracted both platonically and romantically to other people. I have emailed one professor from the University of Colorado Boulder from the psychology unit. This professor had a large interest in human interaction and behavior. I am hoping to hear back for another perspective on the topic. I have also researched through online sources. Through some of my research, I learned that many times we can be attracted to someone whom we spend a lot of time with. They are someone we have gotten to know and spent lots of time with. This attraction is created through the sprouting emotional bond you slowly create with each other. I have so far found this topic quite interesting as it has grasped my attention by learning about the psychology behind a basic principle of life, attraction.
Any research-based essay or article is a unique combination of information—the first of that combo in existence. I think the idea of emailing professors is kind of fun because they are handing you information one-on-one, and if you rephrase it the right way your reader can feel that same connection with you, instead of feeling like a member of your larger audience. It also builds connections by networking; if you end up going to the college that the professor teaches at, they might remember you, especially if they teach in your field of study. My own essay is looking for the answer as to why we look for answers, which I believe is mostly in the field of philosophy, so I emailed a few philosophy professors from SDSU. I plan to email professors from other universities, too, in hopes of accumulating many ideas and perspectives. I have one response telling me ideas and phenomenons to research and write about. I am excited to see where this takes me.
I chose to research why people are so addicted to social media. Researching this topic has been quite easy since there are a lot of articles and studies out there about how being on our phones so much affects our daily lives and how we eat, sleep, and breathe. It's obvious that what we see and do on social media can influence our daily mood and how we react to everything around us, but I wanted to find out more as to why we are so attracted to social media, even if we know it can be bad for us. I emailed 5 professors–two from the University of Lincoln, Nebraska, one from the University of Anchorage, Alaska, and two from San Diego State University. So far, I have gotten two replies. The first was from a professor at SDSU, stating, "Thanks for your email. I will have more time to respond to it this weekend. Your questions sound very interesting!" I had another response from the other professor from SDSU stating how she thought the topic was very interesting and very applicable to my peers. She also linked several interview videos of sociologists that were asked questions about the effects of social media. She requested for me to send hr my essay when it is complete.
For the causal essay, I have been doing a significant amount of research on my topic. I am writing about why people participate in sports. I have noticed that in my research it is particularly difficult to find exactly what I am looking for. You cannot just look up your topic and click on the first link, you have to do some digging. Though it is a little difficult, I have found enjoyment in learning more about why people participate in sports. I have learned that it is not just about winning or getting a work out, but there is a psychological side to it as well. In doing my research I have found it is also hard to find exact sources to back up my points. For one of my sources, I conducted a survey for all of the comp classes to complete. I really enjoyed making it and seeing the answers from my classmates. It will help me tremendously and I will continue to do more research to further improve my causal essay.
I have formed an alliance with a partner to research if people are addicted to social media and if so why that is. So far from our research, we have conducted a survey that says all of our peers (who have taken it) have at least one social media account. From the survey, the main uses of social media have been, staying in touch with others, entertainment and just having nothing better to do. We also learned that fifty percent of people spend over two hours a day on social media yet, only twenty-five percent consider themselves addicted to social media. We have also received an email from a professor at San Diego State who thought our topic was interesting and pointed us towards some helpful articles on the internet and told us that we should look into if people are addicted on their own or if the platforms have methods to keep users coming back and staying for longer times. We still have much to learn.
For the causal essay, I have enjoyed researching my topic much more than I had originally thought I would. I am researching and composing about why Sioux Falls continues to grow extremely fast and why its economy is so good. I have learned a lot about Sioux Falls and it is very cool to learn about what is going on in Sioux Falls. Sioux Falls is a lot bigger and more important than anyone would expect. For example, Raven Industries located in downtown Sioux Falls builds a Macy's Day Parade balloon every year. Also, Sioux Falls is filled with many people willing to donate their money in order to better their town. Along with T. Denny Sanford, who has donated well over a billion dollars, there are many people willing to chip in and do their part. I have learned that Sioux Falls started as an agricultural town to a credit card capital of the world to a medical powerhouse all whilst surrounded by fields of corn and soybeans.
The topic I have chosen to research is why do people overthink. I decided to choose this topic because I personally am an overthinker and worry about unnecessary things. This is a tough topic to decipher, yet many people undergo this characteristic, which piques my interest in researching it. Through research, I have learned of many reasons why people overthink. Some of these reasons include a person being insecure, wanting to change reality, being put in an uncomfortable situation, and pressure. There are also many other items I have been learning through research. Personally, I only enjoy researching when it is about something I am very interested in. Luckily, this topic suits that. I am looking forward to continuing to extend my knowledge on this topic.
The most interesting thing I have been learning from my research is everyone's personal experiences on my Google Form. While writing about why dogs make people happy I asked if there was a situation where a dog had made you feel safer or happier and many of the responses were very touching and showed how much people love their pets. Everyone who owns a dog had said that it has made them feel better at some point. Many mentioned how they were crying and their dog licked away their tears. Some said that they had a bad day at school and seeing their dog so excited to see them when they got home made them happy and made them feel like someone was always there for them. Another question that I asked was if they had to experience putting a dog down or not and how it changed their home life. This question was a bit more saddening because everyone felt like something was missing from their home that they couldn't get back. But its comforting to know that many people have experienced the same things and you are not always the only person feeling sad about something.
For the casual essay, my topic is why people spend so much money on clothes. I have been researching why the culture of expensive cloths exists. This to me is truly fascinating and continues to peek my interests within the topic. More research led to why humans associate better quality products at higher prices. The idea that these two things exist together was brought upon by societal changes from hundreds to thousands of years ago and continues today. The idea of clout culture with clothing has also interested me. Higher priced clothing also offers more clout which can be used to show that one is more superior because of the clothing being worn. This also can be dated far back in history, represented by kings and queens. Although it has the same functionality as other pieces of clothing. I think research is gratifying and fun. The more you learn about the topic the more interesting it becomes with that new knowledge. So the research compounds learning with interest creating a great time learning about your topic!
I chose to write on the topic and question, why do people watch sports? This is a subject that I was curious about, because I know I enjoy watching sports for various reasons. For football, I will watch a game due to the social aspect of it, and it can be a fun time in the crowd. I will watch a variety of other sports and activities to support friends. This can include baseball, football, track, and even a musical performance. It doesn’t matter if I enjoy the sport or activity, but I will be there to support no matter what. Another reason will be to learn more about the sport, which is mostly for my benefit. This is usually soccer, the sport I am going to be going to college for. After sending out a survey I found out that most kids watch sports/activities they don’t usually play, the majority being football, cheerleading, dance, and band. The others will watch for the purpose of learning, such as how a player will watch their film or a professional game on tv.
For my essay, I have chosen to write about how adult coloring books and drawing can be therapeutic for people. While doing my research I have learned a lot about this topic and it is really interesting for me. I like researching topics that I am interested in because it makes it easier for me to compose. I chose this topic because I like to draw and I thought it would be interesting to find out more about this topic. Also, adult coloring books are therapeutic for me in a way. So far, I have learned that drawing and coloring books can be very therapeutic for people and it takes their anxiety levels down. Research has shown that taking their mind off of negative thoughts and putting it towards creativity, or deciding what colors they want to use, can significantly reduce the amount of anxiety and depression someone may feel.
I have decided to write this essay with a partner. The topic that we chose to write about, and research is "Why people internalize their emotions." I am not very familiar with this topic but I am looking forward to the research so I know how I can help people out that struggle with Internalizing their emotions. Internalizing someone's emotions is always a thing I would ponder on why someone would do that to themselves. The research that I have done so far has been about the causes and effects. Says mainly how in the long run the emotions can hit quick and hard and even to the point of contemplating suicide. All this information is new to me and never knew people struggled this much. I would like to learn more about the significant psychological causes and the possibility of past experiences/events affecting them.I still have a lot of research to do but im going to have a blast doing it. I hope after doing this research I will have more sympathy for people that do this because I know where they will be coming from
For my essay, I chose to write about something that has always been very fascinating to me which is the weather. What causes certain events, how tornados form, and cold fronts (as nerdy as it sounds) has always been very interesting to me. But I chose to dive into a certain phenomenon, thundersnow. I have learned a lot about what makes this certain odd thing occur. Essentially it is due to snowstorms having such hot air at higher elevations and cold air at the lower elevations, the fronts energy combines and kaboom lighting. With the storm I learned that there is a 95 percent chance that the area the thundersnow occurred in, will likely have 6 plus inches of snow after the thundersnow occurred. What I also learned is that during our snowstorm in 2017 (Winter storm Xanto to be exact) we had an occurrence of thundersnow and during that time, 7 inches of snow fell! I am rambling. Anyway, researching this topic has been so much fun. Not only am I able to dive into a topic that I find very interesting, but I am also able to learn more about it!
The topic that I chose is "Why do people cry?" The reason I chose this because everyone cries but there are many different reasons for crying. I learned that whenever your body is feeling an overly amount of any type of emotion, a hormone gets sent to a certain part of your brain that triggers the tears ducts in your eyes to turn on and to start producing tears. I learned that there is three different types of tears that people can cry. Another thing that I learned is that when people do release tears from their eyes that in the tears there are hormones and depending on why they or crying or what they are feeling when they are crying there could be different amounts or types of hormones in the tears. So far I think that this essay is fun and interesting to do because the human brain interests me and the reason behind things is also a very interesting thing to me. Crying is such a small thing that no one really puts much thought into but behind the scenes, there is so much that happens in your body when you produce tear when you feel those different types of emotions.
For my causal essay, I chose to research and write about" why people are so attached to their phones or smart devices?". I chose to write about this because the topic is extremely relative to today's society. I want to know if there is anything deeper to always feeling like I need my phone rather than the obvious, is that I want to be on my phone. What sparked me to research this was a notification on my phone that told me how many hours I have been on my phone that week. I get these notifications every Sunday. I have an iPhone with the most recent IOS updates and I am almost certain that everyone with an I phone can use this perk if they would like to. I think the results are fascinating. The feature goes as far as telling how much time you have spent per app! I will be creating a survey asking those who are willing to check and see if they can find out how many hours they have spent on their phones and what app they have spent the most on. This survey's data will go straight into my essay. I have started other research on the topic and I have had great luck finding many different articles. I think the reason my findings are so great because this topic is so relevant to today's society.
I am currently writing my causal essay on why marathons are increasing in popularity. I chose this topic because it truly fascinates me and I have always wanted to run a marathon myself. My research, so far, is going surprisingly well. There are so many articles about different kinds of people with different skill levels completing the daunting twenty-six-point-two mile task of running a marathon. I have read about Eliud Kipchoge proving the impossible by running a sub-two-hour marathon this past Saturday. On a different website, I read about an Iowan woman setting the world record for being the heaviest woman to ever complete a marathon. At 346 pounds, she finished the marathon slightly under her goal of twelve hours, crossing the line at eleven hours and fifty minutes. It has been really fun reading about all of these people from different walks of life challenging themselves through marathons. This all goes to show how anyone, no matter your age, weight, or speed, has the ability to go the distance and run marathons. Last night, I interviewed my cross country and track and field coach, Tony Thoreson. He is an avid runner, so I am excited to put his vast knowledge into my essay. Besides all of that, I still have some research to do and a book source to find.
My essay is all about the phenomenon of reverse psychology and why humans have the tendency to fall for it. I emailed Professor Martin, a professor of psychology at South Dakota State University. I haven't heard back from her yet, but I sure hope to. Reverse psychology has always interested me. Through my research, I have learned that there are three main reasons for people to fall for this mind trick. Number one was that humans tend to need control and freedom. As someone is trying to say something to make you do another thing, you tend to want to contradict them because you need to be in control of your own life. The second reason is that we love to be competitive. As humans, we always need to be getting better and smarter. It feels good when we can figure out when someone is trying to trick you into doing or believing something. The third reason is that most humans have at least some of the same personality traits. IF you tend to be a people pleaser and an agreeable person, you might fall for reverse psychology even more because you feel the need to make people happy. This topic is overall very fun to learn about and it makes it easier to compose this essay when it is something I care about.
The topic that I decided to write about was why people would murder. In my research, I have found out many different things. For example, the reason behind the murder is hardly ever as straight forward and is many times due to sever trama in the persons past that will cause them to break and act out in such a way that they may never do before and lose themselves in their trama and when they return may have done the unthinkable and may have killed. Another example would be that people may also lose control of themselves if they are in use of a substance that may numb the feeling in their body and slow down critical thinking and may cause them to get more easily agitated and act out in a fit of rage and if also adding a relationship gone south, the user of said substance may comply lose themselves and kill. Lastly, and the most horrendous, is that people may enjoy killing, it may give the person a rush and fulfill them to do such a thing to people that are often chosen at random.
I am so excited about this new essay. I have already begun my research and cannot wait to share my information about something I love with everyone; however, I am finding it frustrating to contact my professors. No one is answering me. I have so far emailed three different professors both locally and far away and no one has responded to me yet. I am also having difficulty find a physical book that contains the information I desire. I also find my essay to be an interesting topic that I like. I also think that considering this essay is about something that is in my future career fields, I think it will be able to give me some insight into what I would like to do as a job. Many of my other peers have very interesting topics and some are similar to mine. I might ask them what resources they used to find valuable information about the fashion world and all of its peculiarities.
I decided to write about music and why it is important. Many people don't consider music as an anomaly. The more I have researched, the more I can see that music is almost entirely a human ability. I found it really fun that songbirds, which we have come to associate with music, can differentiate between different melodies almost perfectly, but as soon as you move the melody an octave up, songbirds completely fail to recognize the tunes. Another fun fact involves monkies. even our closest relatives, chimpanzees, cannot recognize music. Some kinds of monkeys can respond to a beat but have no sense of pitch. Other monkeys can recognize octave equivalence, but cannot feel rhythm. The human ability to combine pitch, rhythm, and harmony has no concrete reason. It is theorized that it was used to help attract a mate, but there is no progression over time, which is almost always indicative of such traits. I find it all fascinating.
I decided to write about why young men statistically commit more crimes than any other age group or even women. It was a question proposed to me in my 5th period Street Law class. There are a couple of answers I theorize could be the reason why this is. But I didn't have any actual proof to back up my reasoning until I started doing research. There definitely is an intense discussion on the internet about why this is. Diving into theories on why people deviate away from normal expected behavior into someone that gets them in trouble with the law. It's an interesting subject material and a question that's bigger than myself. If there a finite answer I think we would've figured it out by now and society could be a lot different from it. I think at the end of all realize there isn’t one simple answer and that unfortunately while we can do our best to maintain crime and deviant behavior from those in society. There isn’t a perfect solution for this problem. This definitely is more of a fun essay to write. It helps that it’s about something we’re genuinely curious about and want answers to. I’m excited to see what results I’ll come up with.
