Today, during class, you have three options. You must do two of the three options today. You must type 40 minutes worth. Here are your options: (1) You are Nurse Ratched. Type using first person. Become her. What are your thoughts of McMurphy? What is your home like? What is your life like outside the mental institution? (2) Have you been programmed to think, believe, hate, love something? Who programmed you? How have you been programmed? (3) Who are the enforcers of conformity in our school? At social events? At games? At work? Is it possible to be a nonconformist? Do you conform, entirely or slightly? Intentionally? Remember to type your class period number in front of your comment.

So basically this assignment is being worked on during the 45 out of the 50 minute in class. We are also in the computer lab Monday Oct/13/2008 to work on this, right? We have to choose and blog about one of the 3 topics you have listed in a first person point of view.
Or
Is this an "at home" assignment in which you need to type a 45 minute worth assignment/an assignment as long as 45 minutes, on 1 of 3 topics?
This one will be done in class on Monday. Good clarification.

I think that in society today, everyone is programmed to do certain things in an everyday life. In this country alone we learn as children about American pride, what is accepted in the real world, what to be judgmental about, and what others think on what is "right and wrong." This country presses Christianity as what is the "right" religion for an average American. Therefore, we look upon other religions as being "wrong" in a sense that they cause the people to be lower in society then an average Christian American. 90% of our wars throughout history is/was over just that, religion. We also frown upon others who drop out of high school, dress in "offensive" clothing, or even listen to different music. We are programmed to believe that they are "wrong" and that if you do something against the norm you will end up in a horrible situation. We age programmed to think this is by our parents for sure, our peers, government, teachers, etc. In general anyone in society is programmed to think one thing or another. It's part of being human and having an opinion.
Who enforces conformity? I think everyone who is oblivious to the conformity supports the conformity. I think the conformity is "run" or enforces by those who frown on the nonconformist. The large the conformity is the weaker it is. If you have everyone in it that agrees to it, it isn't conformity. You need nonconformists to have conformity. Conformity is everywhere, work, school, games etc. Anywhere with a group of people, you could more then likely find an average amount of people with the same style, religion, anything. I don't believe that I am a total conformist. I like toe believe that I have a choice and I get to choose. I try not to let others choose what I wear, believe, or anything like that. I like to keep an open mind and not judge anyone if they are "going against the grain."
It is extremely sad for me to admit, but I was a powerful enforcer of conformity when I was in high school, the place where people "grow up" together--and learn to embrace conformity at least on some level. I would enjoyably yet disgustingly mock people who could not run fast, dress "cool," or socialize well. I am ashamed, again, to admit this. People should not be judged for the uncontrollable: skin color, economic situation, height, weight (in some cases), eye shape, and so on. People should only be judged for the controllable: actions, behavior, work ethic (though these are not always as controllable as many people think. (Still today, as a teacher and coach, I enforce conformity all the time, admittedly. It's one of the main parts of my job as a defensive coach--I must condition/program players to play and run harder than they would have without me. I take my job as seriously as Nurse Ratched, but I hope I have a positive impact on people's lives while she decidedly does not.)
Abstract, critical, and aware, Nicole! Excellent.
I like to think having an open mind is possible, but I'm not so sure sometimes. Sometimes, I think we have been so "worked over" by advertising, media, news, parents, peers, and so on, that we can never truly, really think for ourselves. Or, maybe that is "thinking for ourselves": when we take all the input and accept or reject bits of it to create our own notions? Fun to ponder.
"Offensive" is a relative term, indeed. And religion can be made into a form of oppression, undoubtedly. Hypocrisy can abound when we get didactic!
If we learn about being nonjudgmental and not hateful, then how/why do we continue to be judgmental and hateful? I see it in my classroom and in the hallways, in the commons and at games. Are we that flawed, as human beings, that we cannot overcome our need to pre-judge and mock and even hate? I thought we were sophisticated intellectuals? Or, maybe we're just savages or sheep?

(2) Growing up with my family, I was "programmed" to think that all democrats are horrible people who lie and cheat and don't deserve any rights, and that republicans are are the best people who ever walked the Earth. But when I was about twelve or so, I realized that neither of the parties are completely honest and lie all the time. When I moved from my mom's house in 8th grade, my dad and step mom tried to program me that democrats were the best people to walk the Earth, and that republicans were the cheating lieing ones. When I told them how I felt about the whole deal, I was pretty much shunned and became the black sheep of the family. When my younger sister Megan figured out that politics is all a big lie, she was shunned and became the other black sheep of the family. At least I don't have to be alone in believing that politics are a load of crap. Our parents are still trying to get us to vote democrat, and tell us that if we do, our lives will get better and things will become more easy. When they told me that all I had to say was that "No matter who you elect into office, your life will only get worse, the only person who can make your life better is yourself." After I said that, they will try to convince me, and they get frustrated and mad when I "don't see things their way". So basically, my parents tried to program me in opposite ways to believe that the government can only make your life better, and not believing so can only make your life worse. I could go on and on about how my parents have tried to progam me, but I have to answer another question.
(3) It is completely impossible to be a non-conformist. If you don't conform to something, someone else will start "non-conforming" and in turn, make "non-conforming" conforming. In our school, the "enforcers of conformity" are the teachers, the staff, pretty much anyone who isn't a student. They try and make you do things, even tho they're "good things", and try and get you to stay that way throughout the time you're in school. They started programming us to conform in pre-k, or kindergarten, depending on when you started school. You stay that way, whether you like to admit it or not. You wake up around six-thirty seven o'clock, you come to school. You sit and pay attention, get assignments, leave the room when the bell rings, get to your next class before the next bell rings, sit and pay attention, get assignments, leave when the bell rings, and so on and so forth. You go to lunch, sit at "your table" with "your friends" and eat the food that the school feeds you. Than you repeat the process again with however many classes you have for the rest of the day. Than you go home, do your homework (in some cases) eat food, go to sleep, and repeat the process. It's pretty much the same with social events, games, and work. You always have someone who's "above you". Even tho at work, I'd hardly call someone who's in their thirtys, running a restaurant for the rest of their lives, above someone who's in high school who has a part time job. Anyway you look at it, you conform more than you'd like to admit, all the "non-conformists" are on crack. It is impossible to not conform.
Period 1
I believe that we are all programmed by society. We are taught at a young age to want certain things from life, to love a certain way, to hate certain things and to do what we are told. Our parents are the biggest part of our programming, society teaches them what they should believe and they pass it on to us. We learn a large part of what we know now, we learned best when we were in our earliest years. From about age one to about age three or four I learned what was ok to do and what wasn’t ok, the definition of what is good or bad is programmed into us by society. We follow laws made up by society, that they deem appropriate for us, and when something isn’t ok we get ridiculed or put into jail or a mental institution. Our parents are the “Middle Men” in the programming, they take what they are told is right or wrong and teach us that, most parents teach their children the same things they were taught, and all children grow up with some sense of what is ok or not ok in the society they grow up in. Every society is different, you can go from Europe and back to the U.S and you will find that there are a few similarities, but also many differences on how we raise our children. You can try to program someone when they are older but it is much harder to change what they have been taught over time. Once we are taught certain values, or morals it is most likely that we will keep these and disregard anything someone says if they are trying to change our view on the morals or values we have.
The enforcers at school are the administration and the teachers and principals. They enforce the different rules that we have, they teach us that we have to get homework in on time, and it’s not ok to fight in school, and being tardy isn’t ok, and just simple things. We get a lot of rules that show us how to be a good citizen, and worker and be just like everyone else around us. At social events it’s our peers and parents, if something isn’t deemed appropriate they make us realize it and change what we are doing to make it alright. At games it’s parents and school administration who make sure we are doing what we are supposed to be doing and monitor us to make sure we are being responsible and doing what is right. At work it is our fellow co-workers and our bosses, they monitor us and make sure we are doing our jobs correctly. You can be a non-conformist but only to a certain extent, there are many regulations on how far you can go with this. If you take it too far you can be put in jail or in to a mental facility. You can be different and not dress like everyone else, or do something that makes you stand out, but if you take this too far then you may be looking at your life being a “failure”. We follow the rules and laws society picks out for us so we can be good citizens and make a decent life for ourselves, we follow what we know to be right and good and we eventually end up making a decent salary, living in a middle class house, and living the middle class life. That is all we strive for, no one wants to go out of the “lines” and end up being poor, and having a life that is a “failure” by what society teaches us is. We don’t conform intentionally we just conform because it’s what we are taught to do; you can only not conform so much before you are out casted. We try to be individuals and try to do our own thing, but it is hard not to do what you know and what you perceive is right by what you are taught.
Period 1
Yes, I have been programmed to love God and hate the Devil. All my life I have been taught that God is good and the Devil is bad. The only proof I have of this knowledge is the lessons the pastor or my sunday school teacher has taught me. That is the only thing i know, I know that God is the good guy and the Devil is the bad guy. Lets say that someone were to try and convince me that it was the other way around. I wouldnt believe them because it has been crammed into my head my whole life that God is the good guy and that the Devil will try to tempt you into believeing that he is the good guy. Therefore I know not to believe it when someone tells me that the devil is good. It has been programmed in my mind to believe otherwise. My parents have also contributed to this belief in me. They have sent me to church and sunday school and confirmation, all are places where they teach that God is good. I am programmed to love God and hate the Devil.
The enforcers of conformity in our school would have to be the students and the teachers. All the students dress in the same type of style, if anyone dresses differently they are automatically considered different. The teachers also try to conform us by trying to get us all to think the same way, but ide have to say the students are the biggest enforcers. At the dances usually the only "cool" way to dance is to grind. If anyone dances any other way people look at them weird and think they are weird people. At work the managers are the enforcers. They expect us all to know how to do everything within a few days of being trained. Sometimes if we make a mistake they get really upset and they compare us to one of the better workers and say we should be like them and they brag about how good they are and make you feel like you have to compete with them and be just like them. They try to conform us to all be amazing at the job.
I conform slightly, I try to be in with the crowd instead of outside of it. However, I dont go to extreme levels to try to fit in. If I dont want to do something that is considered "cool" then I'm not going to do it. I sometimes conform by accident, not attentionially. Sometimes I see someone wearing a cute outfit so I try to go and find something like it, not realizing that I am trying to conform and look like everyone else. It is possible to be a nonconformist, alot of people are their own person and don't care what others think. Whatever is considered "normal" they do the opposite. They dont want to conform, they want to be different, they like it.
Period:1
I am nurse Ratched I work at a hospital for mentally ill patients. Mr. McMurphy is quite the young fellow. He seems like he may be pretending to have a worse case then he is actually is diagnosed. Sometimes he may just sits back and watches other times he has to be the top dog. He thinks he is in charge of everything but I am the real one in charge of this hospital ward. My home is much quieter than my life at the hospital. I don’t get to boss people around and run things my way. My home is very quiet I live by myself in an old run down house. After I get off work I go home eat supper and kind of just lay around. I don’t have company come over to often. Many people I invite say they already have plans. I wonder to myself sometimes do I actually have friends outside or work. Or do I have friends at all. This is why I like to have things done my way at the hospital.
I think we are programmed a little to believe in certain things that our parents believe in. When you are living with your parents you live by there rules and what they say go. And u believes the things they tell you to. Anything from what religion to what sports team is the best. I wouldn’t say we are programmed to love something because I would say I love my way and not anyone else’s way. I think you are programmed by your parents and all your adults you keep in touch with in a regular day; your teachers, your principles, or maybe your coaches. You are programmed by just everyday of the same thing over and over.
Are cheerleaders actually brainwashers? (Convincing us to do and say precisely as they do and say?) Whoa. Maybe we all have reason to believe there is a Combine that exists...

(2) In my opinion I believe that everyone in some time of their life has been "programed" to think, hate, or love something. Throughout life there's always gonna be someone influencing you and your beliefs or trying to change them. Like for example, I'm sure everyone's parents has tried to change their childs opinion or create one for them. Parents influence us quite a bit whether it's our beliefs, or our dislikes and likes. Also, friends try to program you. Your friends opinions may even mean more to you than your parents do, which will make their opinions influence you even more. It's very hard these days to not be programmed to like certain things. There's a ton of people out there who are trying to program you everyday; such as teachers, political figures, or even your pastor. Sometimes it's even their job to program you. Anyone could try to program you, but it's you that has to let them inorder to be programmed. I believe that I have been programmed before; numerous times in fact. There's people who attempt to program me everyday. It's something that happens so often you don't even really notice it anymore.
(3) I think the enforcers of conformity in our school are the school officials. They give us a dress code which we have to abide by everyday or we get in trouble. At social events or games I believe that our friends conform us to either cheer for our team, dress up, or even to sit in a certain section of the stands. At work our managers or boss will conform us to wear uniforms or dress nice. With all the conformities today it makes it almost impossible to be a nonconformist, but some people find a way to nonconform. These people choose not to let others influence them in either the way the dress or the way they think. I believe that I conform slightly. I wear certain clothing, but I choose to do this because I like the brand of clothing I purchase. My opinions and beliefs on subjects usually aren't my own; they're usually someones elses that I just agree with. I don't conform intentionally most of the time. I'm happy with what I believe in. Sometimes, I will admit, I do conform or agree with the other person just to make them happy; to satisfy. In my opinion I think we all conform slightly, even when we don't know it.
Is it depressing to admit that we're programmable, like cell phones or alarm clocks? I don't want to admit that I'm a device, but I do get programmed--by Dr. Talcott, by Coach Garrow, by my parents, by my wife, by my daughter--to instantly behave and respond certain ways that they want me to. For instance, I am programmed to wash the dishes and take out the trash in a precise, automatic fashion. I do these tasks entirely mindlessly (well, not entirely--I do try to listen to some music while I wash the dishes, which helps me stay sane).
Pd. 1
(2)
I think I have been programmed to think and do things a certain way. I think everyone has whether they think so or not. I've been influenced by my friends, family, and people in my life to think and act the way I do. I work in the middle of the poorer district in Sioux Falls and because of some of the customers that come into the store, I believe all those types of people act that way; thats not right, and if I had the choice I wouldn't want to think that way, but society and the people themselves have made me think that way. In certain ways though, I haven't been programmed. People always say I should be in football because I'm a bigger kid, and I tried it out for a year and it just wasn't my thing. So I think that the more influence a person or thing has on your life the more you will think and act like them.
(3)
I think it is impossible to be a complete nonconformist, because if you are trying to go against somebody or something there are bound to be people who think that same way, therefore you are a conformist. I think everybody is an enforcer in nonconformity, teacheers, students, family, and friends all try to make us conform to what the believe in and what they do. At games cheerleaders are the enforcers of conformity. They want people all to have school spirit and cheer along with everyone else. I think that in some ways I'm a nonconformist, because I do things and think things that no one else does. I like to make people think about things that people usually don't think about, so in a way I'm an enforcer in conformity also. I think I intentionally am a nonconformist because I don't like how everyone else feels about a lot of things and I don't want to think like that. So, in a way I'm also a conformist, because I'm sure that there are plenty of people out there that believe in the same morals and think the same ways as I do. Maybe it shouldn't be up to us or not to say if we are conforming or not. Maybe it should be the people who try to make us conform that say if we are nonconformists or conformists.

I, have tried to be programmed into believing god is real. Didn’t work. For the rest of the world, good job with the book jeebus, but im not falling for it. The only reason people believe in it is because they cant handle everything in their life, they have to look upon a fake(or in their eyes real)god/friend to talk to. This is dictionary programming, the way everyone just conforms and believes, just because everyone else does, and if everyone else does, then it must be real... right? I myself am not programmed like the rest of the world around this "GOD" character, nothing in that book is true and its just a book. Evidently a majority of people believe everything they read. The enforcers of conformity are Talcot and Thorson. They dont want us to be exactly alike, but we do have some conformity, including coming to school on a day when no other school in a 30 mile radius doesn’t have school today, for the very racist native American day. If i were a Native American i would hate to have a day devoted to me, it just reminds people that the native Americans do exist, which gives people a reason to hate. I am a non conformist by not believing. Not believing what everybody says, because most of the time people don’t know what the _ _ _ _ they are talking about. They just ramble on about how this girl is a skank or how this guy just uses girls, spreading rumors that conform people into believing anything they read, hear, or see. People conform everyday by just getting up for school and attending day after day after day. It is unintentional, but you have to, its a law, you must attend school or else you are classified as a bad kid. But when you learn more outside of school then when you are in it kind of sends a message about the school. About how the things the school might be telling you is not true, like how the lunch actually costs the school 2.50, bull _ _ _ _, no way does the lunch cost that much, they overcharge and they are mean about it when you ask how much things cost. So this year i am not conforming, i dont have a lunch and i dont have to put up with the schools bull _ _ _ _ lunch price. Another thing, we are all conforming at this very moment by even doing this assignment, all of us tricked into doing this.
Would Nurse take herself home to be plugged in all night? Would she peel her skin off to reveal a steel endoskeleton? Would she have to recharge like a cell phone? Or, would she/it go into a "hibernate" mode? Surely, she is not married and has no children, right? Surely, she has no sould, right? Does she go to church? Does she have friends? Is she bitter like Miss Havisham, and therefore wants to exact revenge on men? Was she mistreated during a date in high school and jaded for life? Were her parents good to her?
(Period 1)
(3) The enforcers in this school you could easily say are the jocks and the people who hang out with the jocks. That goes for social events and games. I am definitely not a enforcer at work, that is my boss's job. Yes, it is possible to be a non-conformist. I am just myself either way. I dont try to fall under a conformist but you could probably see that i am is my guess. I just like to hang out with my friends and have a good time by now being seniors i dont think we try to conform. Maybe i did as a freshmen to act cool but now no. Are senior class as i see it is really close actually most people get along and we all have fun with each other. You can tell who the non-conformists are and i see them as weird. But once i get to know them i like them because they are usually really nice.

My life i know my parents have taught me to believe some things and taught me whats right and also whats wrong. Also i have just followed their beliefs and what they believe. Like believing on the Republican side. Also being a conservatist. My dad i dont know has programmed me to work, but he is a hard worker besides school kind of like me. He is sucessful because he has worked at the same job since he was 19 and has just moved up on the ranks at UPS. When i was a kid he even worked the night shift so i hardley ever got to see him. My mom is the same right out of college she has been a case manager at Sioux Valley in the intensive care unit. She also can work more than eight hour days and she goes under a lot of stress working with premature babies who need help. Sometimes the babies are just to sick and cant make it so it is really stressful for her. So they have taught me to work hard and you can have what we have all the time. "You can be successful in life if you want to." My parents have taught me to also just when you can have fun. You cant be always making money to do nothing with it. You have a job to spend some of it and have fun. I have 2 brothers and recently i just got a sister. She is around 3 months old. My parents have showed me i dont know about teach but how to love your child. Me and my parents, especially my dad have a relationship that cant be beat. I want that same relationship with my child when i get one of course. They have taught me alot i dont know about programmed me becuase im not a machine but they have taught me alot and showed me alot. I know i want to be like them to an extent but also i would add some things in there i would do that they dont do.
My name is Nurse Ratched; well that’s what I’m called at my work. My work is very interesting and very strict. I work with patients that need my special help; they are what you would call helpless. Everyday I go to my work early in the morning and don’t leave until very late at night. I’m the head boss here everyone listens to what I have to say and never disagrees with me, I like it that way. My patients also listen to me very well, we have a very strict schedule here and everyone has to follow without any complaints. I have never in my work life have ever had a problem with any patient until one certain patient McMurphy. He is a very interesting patient; it seems to me he likes to get my temper up. He tries very hard but won’t succeed, because it’s my way or you wouldn’t want to know the other way. I wonder if he really needs help or is psycho at all. He seems very normal and he gets along with everyone a little too well. He even gets along with Chief and Chief likes him, which is very strange to me. I wonder why McMurphy really wants to be here, what’s his purpose, and does he know he has to stay here as long as I want him to be here. This battle he has going on between me and him wont last very long because in the end I’m always the one that wins no one disobeys me, well the don’t dare to. That’s who it was until McMurphy came now everyone seems to think they can go against me without any worries. Jus wait McMurphy you think you have just about everyone wrapped around your finger, well just wait. Anyways my life is very in order for like for my house. I live in a nice home, one bedroom, one bathroom, a nice big living room, and nice kitchen. It’s all on one level the way I like it, I would hate to have it all mixed up not in order on two different levels. All my walls are white, right when you walk in you come into my living on the right and to your left my kitchen. My living room has a couch and a love seat that’s it, they are both white also. I have just a big enough TV for me, which I hardly ever watch it. Thiers a coffee table and carpet under it, also I have this very unique chandler in my living room. In my kitchen it’s not very big but big enough for me, theirs a descent size table enough for four but I never have quest I like being alone. The kitchen is also white with these tiles around all the shelves, where I put all my dishes and sliver ware. I really don’t care much for my kitchen I hardly spend time here anyways. Then you walk down the hallway off to the kitchen there is my bathroom then at the end my bedroom. My bedroom is my favorite place. Right when you walk in you see this huge white bed. Right when you see it, it’s like a big cloud look so comfy you almost want to jump on it but don’t. I have a huge window in my bedroom facing the backyard, which there is nothing back their really just a big tree that has probably been here on earth forever. The curtains I choose for my choice for my windows are very interesting. I choose white slick, so when you touch them it just makes you want to pull them down and fall asleep with like a kid would with his favorite blanket. There is nothing more really to my room that is interesting just a simple plain dresser where my unwanted jewelry just sits because I never wear them, but just keep them just incase. Then my nightstand with my alarm clock also this tiny little lamp that you hardly get light from. Then there is my closet which I really only need for my work clothes because I hardly ever go out, so I really don’t need other clothes just some. Outside of my work I really don’t have a life. Well I do but to some they wouldn’t call it a life, but I like it this way. I usually just go home cook myself a meal sit relax listen to music and then usually either watch TV or just get ready for bed. Really my life is devoted to my work I take it very seriously and love my job. Who wouldn’t love a job that everyone listens and follows you, also who fears me so they will listen? My fear is now the patient McMurphy is here in my ward, I have this feeling things are going to change and I’m not going to like it one bit. So I just have to stay strong and win this battle with this McMurphy. In time I will have him the way I want him, he will listen to me.
I'd rather believe that I was created by "god" than made from a monkey. Even tho, in turn that means that we're marrying and "doing other stuff" with our long distance cousins. Which in turn, isn't comforting. Either way, we lose.

the enforcers of conformity are the people that everybody talks about, wants to be like, wants to be friends with. this isn't true in all cases but typically people want to look and act and be like the "popular kids". at work people want to be like the manager and get more money and be more noticed in their work so they try their hardest to be that way.
it is very possible to be a nonconformist. manyyy people are themselves and only themselves. they dont want to be anybody but who they are. those kind of people are the people that show their own style and stick out like a sore thumb because many others around them are all conformed. Unfortunately i do conform. i dont want to conform and some days i want to be like the people that dont conform but isnt that conforming anyways? trying to be like the nonconformists...? i would say i am slightly conformed... i think... its definitely not intentional. i would much rather prefer to be me and only me.

i have been programmed to be the best i can be. my mother taught me this. she is not the type to push me or yell or force me to do my best she just taught me in the beginnning to think the way i want to think, believe in myself, hate no one, and love everything and everyone. i was "programmed" this way because my mom showed me the way to do these things and i just followed in her footsteps. in someways i dont like how much she didnt push me to be my best because if she would have maybe i would have been involved in more activities or have strait A's in school. but then again i have alot less stress then most kids because they do have parents that do that to them. they are also the kids that i was talking about in the 1st part of this blog. the ones people conform to be like. i guess i really dont want to be like those people. they might be the types to not get along with their parents. or they like to rebel and do illegal things. i would never want to be like that. people may think im a "goody good" but.. i guess im proud of that. i do get along with my parents, i dont rebel, i love simple things in life that come naturally. im definitely not perfect; im FAR from it. but i do like to think of my life as perfect. there are definitely days that i dont show that i feel that way but thats probably because i worry the minute something doesnt go right, or doesnt go the way i wanted it to go. this is one of my MAJOR faults and i know this but i try to think more positive about it.

1. I am cold. McMurphy is trying to destroy my ward. I despise McMurphy and am not going to let him ruin my ward. I live in a small, very neat and very organized apartment. My apartment is very quiet and cold and lonely. I rarely leave this apartment, except to go to work. I have no social life, my work is my life. I feel very small outside of the mental institution, i liek the sense of control running the mental institution gives me.
3. The enforcers of conformity at our school would be the principles and teachers. They provide the rules and the guidelines. At social events, i would say the people at the social event. Alot of people follow what other people are doing. Like at a party, people face peer pressure, which i think is an example of conforming. At work, the enforcers of conformity would be your boss/ company that give you a certain uniform or dress code. They give you guidelines on how to approach a customer. I think also at certain jobs you follow some habits that other employees that you work with have. You see alot of employees, that work at a fast food restaurant, after their break, take "smoke breaks",i am sure most of employees have started that bad habit after seeing/being with another employee that had done it at the time they had started the job. I think we are all conformists slightly because it is unreal to rebel against everything. There are people that like to dress a certain way, or have a different hairstyle, but they are still conforming in one way or the other. I conform, i follow the rules but i also am an individual, i think most of us do it intentionally to fit in.
Period 1
(question 2)
In today's society we as people have indeed become programmed to walk, talk, dress, and even think a certain way. I think this is bad because it leads towards conformity and likeness. I try to think my own way but my views are blurred by those around us. Everyone around you has an impact on how you live whether you believe it or not. I am a victim of conformity I would say because I admit I do like things because other people like them and speak a certain way that im "programmed" to. I have been programmed through propaganda, TV, video games, music, clothes, people (most of all), and school. I think school influences us greatly because they burn into you brain that you have to graduate, you have to go to college, you need a good job to live well, and you must behave. People who don't abide by these rules are usually thought by us programmed people to be cast-outs or failures and in the computer programming world they would get deleted ; here they are just not talked to or made fun of. Another gathered thought of the hive brain (society) people different from you should be shunned or kept away. Preserving our perfect little balance of the "norm". Many people hate change or they are afraid of it so when new people come around they don't even give them the chance to get to know them, they would rather just toss them away and forget about that "new weird thing" they just met. I can touch on this personally because whenever I go to church there are always angry stares at me from the elder people and because I am of a different race they don't want to get used to the "new way" of people being treated the same which disgusts me.
(question 3)
I would say that I conform slightly in a way that I feel that I am not like everyone else but if im not like everyone else than aren't I just conforming to noncorming? I would say that the enforcers are you peers mostly because they judge you withing five seconds of seeing you and what you wear and how you speak. This idea scares people into wearing the same type of programmed clothes. I would have to say that the idea of popularity is one of the leading factors in enforcing kids to wear certain things as well. Because if they don't then no one will remember them or remember being as just that "weird kid with a nose ring". I do believe that I have been intentionally enforced to do something everytime someone says "get your homework done" or "pull your pants up". and other times I haven't been intentionally enforced for instance when people say "do how you please" or "do whatever you want". Lastly the world in very manipulative and ordering so if you are just floating through life you will get sucked in and spit out a finely tuned program awaiting an order.
This assignment is conforming! Karn is right! Isn't it worth the effort, though? Maybe some conforming is good for us. I hope this class is good for you. Conforming has been good to me and good to my brother, who was the definite anti-establishment leader in our high school.
pd. 1
Everyone has been "programmed" to think or believe a certain way. Society is our programmer. We have to conform not just in our actions but also at times our thoughts to what is socially acceptable. They’re people that challenge their programming and go against what society says is right. These people more often then not get thrown in jail or a mental hospital like McMurphy.
If you compare society to the big nurse playing the role of programmer, you could then compare the black boys to the media. The media enforces a societies views just like the black boy enforce nurse Ratched's unjust rules. The media enforces a society’s view by not reporting on things that challenge it, by condemning people or organizations that go against what is socially expectable. Religion is also a programmer (which has great influence on a society). Religion programs its followers into exactly that people that follow. Religion trains people to think a certain way, trains them to think what is right and what is wrong. Even within the same religion there are different views and different beliefs that their members are so loyal to. This loyalty causes people to fight over their own "right" views that religion has programmed into them. Programming is not all a bad, at times it's necessary. If the big nurse’s ward had no "Ward Policy" the patients would run all over her and her staff just as McMurphy had done. The only thing that causes him to stop is the threat of being moved up to disturbed, and when he learns he has been committed to the ward. McMurphy knows that because he has been committed he only gets out of the ward when the big nurse says. This is the only programming that’s going to work on McMurphy.
2). In a way, I believe that all people are somewhat programmed to think a certain way, or to believe in something specific, or even to love or hate something. I believe this occurs because of the way you are raised, and the environment in which you are brought up in. Society also plays a big role in these things. There are things everywhere that tell you that you need to think this or you’re not cool; or you need to believe this or your not right; even loving something or hating something can be skewed do to people wanting to fit in. I think society plays way to big of a role in the way kids are brought up.
3). There are multiple enforcers of conformity in our school. Every day we have to do something a certain way, and if it’s not done like the “higher ups” want it, there is potential to get into trouble. No matter where you go there will always be people trying to reach total conformity. At social events you have parents and police, at games you have those who believe every single chant or everything said is unethical and therefore unsportsmanlike. At work everyone has their boss, and if you don’t do what your boss wants you get in trouble or even fired. I believe it is impossible to become a non-conformist, because no matter how you try to get away from conformity you will always be conforming to something else. I don’t think anyone ever conforms intentionally, but it happens just because of society. It all goes back to number two; society plays way to big of a roll in what is done and said in our lives.
Pd.1
(3).Tanner and Jake are enforcers of conformity in our school. They make fun of people in our school who aren't cool. You pretty much have to be a jock to be cool. Marso and Talcott are the enforcers at games, cause if you cheer too obnoxiously they will kick you out! Also, if you don't cheer you will be made fun of by the people that do cheer loud. My boss, Troy Timmons, is the enforcer of me at work. He treats me like a slave because I do what I'm told. I think it is possible to be a nonconformist; people that don't care to cheer or stand up during games just sit down and ignore people. I conform almost all the time except when I'm tired of watching the volleyball team lose, I sit down when everybody else is standing. I intentionally do this because I get bored of watching our team lose. Thorsten likes to enforce bad kids in school. For example, he takes kids into his office at school to scream and yell at them for doing something they shouldn't have in the hallway. I remember I got in trouble for throwing food down the hallway and nailing a girl in the back. He was very upset with me. I was even more upset when he was done with me in the office! Sometimes I get tired at school and instead of conforming with everybody else I fall asleep. But for some reason it's my last year in school, and I try harder and I know I could make it to college and succeed. My mom enforces me to not go hunting all the time. Instead, she tells me to get some hoemwork done or cook on the grill. Because she never cooks for me so I always have to do it myself! I conform with everybody at parties during the weekend; the people that don't come out and conform, are the people who sit at home and play videos and don't have lives. Chase Douglass is an enforcer at our school. For example, if a little kid is walking down the hall Chase will boss him around and enforce him to do stomething stupid. Chase is an intimidating figure during school! Shane Micheal Hauge is an enforcer of conformity outside of school because when were hunting I will blow the duck call and he will always have to out blow me at the Power Hen. So, he enforces me to call in it a different way and get a different pitch out of the acrylic, $140 duck call. Chris Pacilik enforces Joey Brannan and other people in our school to go hunting and be cool, so people conform and go with him to hunting adventures. It is a fun time to endure but he sure enforces everybody to conform in these social events during the weekends. Mr. C is a good enforcer during class because he gives us a goal to accomplish everyday and he betters ourself of getting things done! I think it is almost impossible to be a complete noncomforist because you have all probably been to a game and conformed with everbody else or have done homework and gone to class and conformed with everyone during class instead of dazing off and not paying attention. (1). McMurphy is really starting to tick me off! It feels like if he is almost taking over the ward. It's hard to control him because he has convinced the other patients in the ward to conform with McMurphy in the decision making. I like my home I do what I want. I don't want McMurphy around anymore, he makes me very mad at times. I wish I could blow him up with a bomb. My life outside the mental institution is fine; if McMurphy was out of the ward my life would be better in and out of the ward. Chief Bromben is deaf, and he is even starting to turn towards McMurphy. I cannot control McMurphy anymore; he is definitely taking over the ward. I'm starting to lose it.
pd. 1
1.) Mr. McMurphy is ruining my ward. He thinks he can come in and run the place, but I am not going to let him. I'm sure he has talked the patients into going against me. I infered this because of the TV episode when I did not allow them to watch the World Series, but they went against me and sat and watched a blank screen while I sat behind the glass in my nurse's office. I try to stay calm and act rational in these circumstances but sometimes I just can't control my emotions. I get so angry that I want to burst. I love things being my way or the highway. Things around the ward must be in order and precise. This is how things at the home used to be. My mother would not let me play until the entire house was clean. If I would ever talk back or resist the cleaning, I would get a beating by my dad. I grew up with violence and very little respect from them. My father had gone to jail numerous times for stealing and other petty crimes. He was always watched when he was at home with my mother and me. My mother was a nice lady only to her friends and our relatives. I think I was the child they never wanted. I had a peculiar body; I dealt with large breasts that were disproportionate to my body. I was never pretty. My hair, my body, my personality were never perfect enough it seemed like to my parents. I was a neglected child. Working in the ward gives me a sense of accomplishment and I don't feel like an outcast anymore. All these patients have diseases and things wrong with them and I feel bigger than them. For once I can take control and organize things they way I want them to since I didn't get the chance as a child. I don't have a nice home and I live by myself. I like my freedom but I go through life wishing some man would sweep me off my feet and take me somewhere far far away. But my life isn't like that and I'm doing my job to mechanize and instruct my patients.
3.) Enforcers are a big part of our school. Without them things would be unorganized and chaotic. Mr. Talcott, Mr. Thorson, and Mr. Marso are the biggest enforcers of our school. All three of them take control at social events to. They keep things in order. Our school can be compared to the combine in a way. We do have rules that make us seem like a mechanized school, but yet we have our freedoms. The principles give guidelines to the teachers so it's like they are followers of the school. We all have our duties that we are expected to carryout. So is their room for conformity?? Conformity is good so we can follow a set of rules so we behave properly. There are plenty of students that misbehave to make a statement not to conform. I try to listen and follow the rules I'm given so I don't get in trouble. But I love wearing the type of clothes I want to wear which shows a way that I like to stand out. I don't entirely conform but I don't slightly conform either. I'm in between. There are times when conformity at school is frustrating because I don't approve of the way things are run. For example, when there are only certain things we can cheer at games, that's a little strict I think. But I suppose I should just accept the rules because there's nothing I can do about it. Conformity is good and bad at the same time.
Period 1
(Subject 2: Programmed?)
In a way, everyone here at BVHS, and most students in general, have all been "programmed" to some extent to believe certain ideas and follow certain "rules". Our parents and family do their best to teach us right from wrong, while many peers aren't so concerned about the right from wrong. It seems as if most high school students are only concerned about their image and how they are seen by their friends and classmates. Too many people follow this following trend. I don't think that we are programmed to love or hate anything specific, but there is always influence to follow whatever is cool at the time.
I would have to say that I have also been "programmed", to some extent. If not for my friends, I probably would not do some of the things I do, like watching an infinite amount of sports, dressing a certain way, or follow other ideas/actions. I would not say that everyone at BVHS is a follower, but the influence is there. Everyone is programmed to act a certain way, just not directly.
(Subject 3: Enforcers of Conformity)
There are numerous enforcers of comformity at our school. For the most part, they consist of the more popular kids. Example: A popular kid goes out and gets a tattoo, some of his friends are more likely to go out and get a tattoo. Most students want to be cool, so they do their best to mimic "cooler" kids.
Another key contributor to comformity at school would be Mr. Talcott. I am not saying everyone wants to mimic him, but he sets a tone for the entire school. He is a good enforcer of the rules that him and the board set, and students must conform to his beliefs. Douglas is huge.
1st
(Question 2)
I believe everyone has been somewhat programmed to think the way they do in their lives. We all have different personalities and have grown up in different cultures and live by different rules from our parents, so everyone will be programmed different. For example, all my relatives and paretns have grown up in Minnesota so they are all huge Vikings, Twins, and Timberwolves fans. So when I was born I really didn't have choice from the beginning to decide who I would like because they started giving my all the fan gear early and constantly telling me that they were the best team. The same way that my parents and relatives programmed me to love Minnesota teams is the same way they programmed me to hate the Green Bay Packers. They would always tell me when I was young how they were terrible and no one liked them, and whenever they played each other everyone would yell at the tv screen a little louder. The reason I think they hated them so much is that the Packers are usually a good team most years and the games between them and the Vikings are good ones. Another example is how Americans feel towards Mexicans. We look at them as being less than us and illegal immigrants who probably hopped over the border and swam the river just to get here. A lot of Americans are lazy too, and we look at Mexicans to do all the hard or dirty jobs us Americans don't want to do. The American culture has made us think this way towards Mexicans because we see them as low down dirty workers.
I believe that most people are programmed from either their parents or their friends. When growing up, your parents teach you what is right or wrong and their likes and dislikes somewhat rub off on you. Also, when you get older your friends tend to influence what you do and what kind of activities you get involved in. The people who are closest to you make you act the way you do most times.
(Question 3)
In our school we have many different enforcers of conformity and many different types of conformity to follow. For example, Dr. Talcott and all the teachers in the school see to it that the students behave and get their homework done and graduate. It's like the school system is an assembly line bringing kids in and putting the parts together and then shipping them out into the real world with their education. At social events, I would say your friends determine if your conformed or not depending on if you follow what the group is doing or if you act against it and want to do something different. Your friends will let you know if they think what your doing is weird and stupid or if they think its cool. At sporting games, we must conform to the supervisors rules like Marso, Talcott, and Thorson even though all the students believe we should be aloud to do more cheers that our advisors
feel are "inappropriate." I believe it is possible to be a nonconformist
period 1
1)Every day I walk into this mental institution, doing same stuff everday. I run this hospital with total dominance and nothing stops me from what I want to do. I try to keep my patience with the patients in this institution, but this Mr.McMurphy is really pushing it. The moment he walked into this place I knew he was going to be a problem. He is ruining all my meetings and starting to make people rebel with him, but since he is causing all this trouble I'm going to to do my best to keep him here as long as I can. When I go home I try to just forget of all the stuff that happends at work. My house is small but it is very taken care of, not a spot of dirt anywhere. Every now and then when work gets too crazy, I'll go to the bar and suck a few down. It helps a lot, especially since Mr.McMurphy came to the institution.
2) The enforcers of conformity are the jocks, for example, Chase Douglas. At social events it all depends who you hang out with. At games It would be the people who are friends with the players, and they are mostly seniors. At work it's my boss, and just the guy doing the work. It is possible to be a nonconformists, all you have to do is act different from what other people do. For example, where all black clothes everyday. I conform slightly, I like to do my own thing sometimes, but I'll do what other people do at times too. I'll do it intentionally so i'm not the person that is different from everybody.
period 1
(2)~yes, many times and my entire life. For as long as I can remember I've been programmed to be a good child, an intellegent scholar, a person who has set values and morals. To be an outstanding person in general...I guess. My parents wanted me to be more like my brother. Chad Kruger, straight A's (4.0 GPA) student. Every time I did something wrong my mother would act as if it was the "end of the world!" and most of the time I would be like, "What?". When I was very young, she would teach me respect and proper ettiquite. As I grew older, she would assign me extra assignments aside from my usual class/homework, such as: going through the encyclopedia, reading books, multyplication cards etc. All kinds of crap that she would get from the neighborhood book store to make kids like me more irritated. No wonder I hate homework. Over and over, day by day, each time I did this, the more I felt horrible. When I wouldn't do the "HOME" work she would get angry like a manager at some huge business would (like J.P. Morgan). I literally tried to find ways of escaping the "system" the all so formal life everyone should live by. But I could never do so, and to this day she is the same exact way, every day my parents are programming me to be more enthusiastic about going to a college or University.
(3)~At school-teachers, the principal (The Man), even other students. At social events like football or track-the coaches. At work-my co-workers, manager "crew leaders". There is absolutely no way to "escape" conformity, except if you were a Feral child (a child born into human society and then left in the wood to be raised by supposed "Animals" or "Beasts." I conform all the time, I have the whole skateboarder appearance, work, go to school, look like a rebel, and do what everyone else does. Sometime even intentionally and most of the time with doing so.
period 1
(2) I believe I have been programmed into loving anime! As I watch my animated shows, new ones start to move into my mind, and some of the old shows I watched get saved after they are done or I just keep getting older and toss them out the window.
I believe the TV programmed me into watching anime. TV is where I watch most of my animated shows!
Scary huh? ^^
I been programmed to watch each of my shows that I like at specific times. One show I watch is at 8:00 PM every saturday. However, I need to get the the right channel on the TV to watch it at that time. Then, I just repeat the same process next saturday and the next, until my mind tosses out the window or the anime show finishes and I save it into my memory. After that, my brain starts to browze for a new show or looks into my memory for another show I watched. If there is a new show that catches my eye, I start to watch and look up info. on the show so that I know everything about the new show. ^_^
(3) There are many enforcers in our school. Our principal, teachers, the lunch ladies, and the Superintendant! I don't go to social events at school, so, I don't really know who is in charge there. I never go to games either. But I suppose that the coaches are in charge of their team and school is charge of the event. At work, my boss is in charge of where I need to go and what I should be doing. However, I can be a noncomformist. I would probably get fired at work if I didn't do what I was supposed to do. At school, to be a nonconformist, you can dress differently then everybody else. Wear lots of black like me, or be really girly and wear pink everyday. Ewwwwwww! ^^
I do conform by going to school and do what I'm supposed to do in class. I don't conform by my looks. I wear lots of black and dark colors. No, I'm not goth! ^^
Iam Nurse Ratched. Iam the head nurse on the ward. I make sure everything runs as I want it to and no other way. There has been some issues in the ward lately that began with the new patient Randal P. McMurphy. Mr. McMurphy seems to think he runs things around here and he has been attempting to get under my skin. I do believe he has been putting up a good fight but iam on to his little game and I plan to play back. Outside of the ward I do not have much of a home life. I live in a cheap one room apartment by myself. Basically I only sleep there and the rest of my time is spent at the ward. The ward is my job and my life. My goal is to help all those that are in need.
My brother decided a certain level of conforming is necessary to thrive in America. Metaphorically speaking, he decided not to be a rock in the USA River, as he was in high school. Now he "goes with the flow" a little more, as he manages a Hy-Vee in Omaha, Nebraska. Still, though, he wears anti-establishment t-shirts and attends anti-establishment concerts away from work; and he thinks on deeper levels than most Americans, for which I'm proud of him. This exercise is basically about being aware like my brother; One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest has helped people be more aware since it was published.
period 3
1. If I am Nurse Ratched I do not like McMurphy at all. I want to get rid of him as fast as possible because I am annoyed by him and him trying to get me to snap and that I believe that I am a much stronger person than he is mentally. I know that I can get McMurphy to snap eventually and he doesn't have any chance of getting me to snap, he can't beat me. My house is dark, gloomy and empty. It is a lonely house with nothing on the walls, not much furniture, and no color (it is all black and white). Outside of the mental institution I have no friends because I am such a cold person that no one wants to be around me. I turn people away because I don't trust them and I need to be in control of everything all the time. All I do in my spare time is sit in my dark empty house and do nothing becuase I hate everything and everyone.
Nicole--Interesting that your Nurse Ratched says she wants to help those "in need." She might consider what she does to be "help." She might think she is helping, but is too blinded by conformity, rules, restrictions, and protocol to see the truth/actuality. I can see her living in a tiny apartment to save money to spend on...what? What would she possibly buy? She's not fit for vacations, which she might see as a waste of time. Maybe she saves her money to spend on spare parts when she needs them: you know, like a new radiator to install in her abdomen; new gears for her elbow joints; new bulbs for her eye sockets; new lubrication for her moving parts; new battery or spark plug and so on!
pd. 3
Yes I have been programed. I have been programed by my parents. Normally what they like I like, or who they like I like. If my mom is mad at a family member or a friend I get mad at them too but when she forgives them or things become ok again I usually still hold a grudge. When im with my mom im usually a law breaker like she is. But, when im with my dad I follow the law and get mad at everyone who doesn't. My parents are a huge infuluence on me and I follow what they do without even thinking about it, I am programmed to think and do what they do when they do it.

(1) My name is Nurse Ratched. I work in a mental hospital. Lately, a man named McMurphy has been destroying my careful balance of a schedule. Every afternoon they sit in front of a blank tv. My home life now can't be the same because of all this outrageous behavior. My one story home in the small city is not as clean as it once was. No matter how hard i scrub or wipe or vacuum there is still something dirty there. I have called my mom asking what to do and she said that I am on my own because she herself was just a sales lady in her time. She doesn't know how to handle the people i deal with. I will try my hardest to regain dominence in my ward and get McMurphy trained to be just like it was. There will be no more schedule changes on my watch.
(3) I believe that there are many forces that control the way we move, think, and interact. The bells control when we go to class. I find myself working around my work schedule that i have conformed to and become accustomed to. I conform at work because of the uniforms we wear (tan pants, white shirt, blue tie, black shoes/belt, blue hat, name tag, and blue apron). I have met one person in my life whome i think actually is a nonconformist. He grew up on the streets so i find that he htinks differently and acts differently than normal. being around him makes me think that i'm so normal. I am able to say that i'm a conformist. My day is constantly urged to be normal and to not stick out. In some ways i'm not a conformist being that i love cars and work on them. That's different because not many women do that. That is maybe the biggest clue to being a nonconformist. I watch mtv and vh1 (when i have time) just like everyone else. Teenagers go through a rebel stage that they think they are being different, but in fact almost every teenager does go through that stage so they might actually be conforming by rebelling.
Good point Jake Nurse Ratched most likely does go to the bar to relieve her stress from being at work and dealing with McMurphy.
Period 3
2) Everyday a new thought is programmed into our heads. We are programmed how to think in each class. We are taught to believe certain beliefs, hate certain people/things and love certain people/things. Anything we see or hear is programming our minds. When I think of being programmed, I think of how my parents have raised me. I am told what to do and how to do it daily. "Practice your saxophone." "Clean your room." After 17 years of them telling me what to do and how to do it I just know what to do. I know to obey them because through their discipline they have "programmed" me. In our school we are also programmed to know what is right and wrong. We know when to talk and when to be silent. We know how to do things the "right" way. When the bell rings, we are programmed to move to the next class. We know how much time we have to get to the next class also. Everything we do in our daily routine has been programmed into us. We even program ourselves.
3) Conformity. It's always talked about. "Don't conform." But when they tell us not to conform, don't we conform to not conforming? Everyone enforces conformity in our community. At school we conform to the class schedules, and at social events and games we conform to the people around us. Is it possible to be a nonconformist? No. I truly believe that you will always be a conformist. Everyone wants to be different, but if everyone wants to be different, aren't they eventually going to be the same? I know for a fact that I also conform, I'm conforming right now by doing this assignment. Do I conform intentionally? No. Everyone conforms though, it just depends on the degree of how much they conform.
3.
My name is Nurse Ratched. I live alone. I do not have a husband or children, and do not really ever wish to have them. I have never really liked children. They are loud, unorderly, and they take a long time to conform entirely to their surroundings. Therefore, I hope to never have them. I am perfectly content with myself, and do not need anyone else in my life to complete it. I do like people, and I do enjoy working with them. I have always wanted to control a group of people, such as a manager or business owner. Then, I came upon the mental institute where I currently work, and will probably work for the rest of my life. I enjoy the people I work with. I think at times that they may find me overpowering or intimidating, but really I am just doing my job. I am keeping everyone in the building safe, but keeping to the orderly schedule and my strict ways. I feel that I will probably remain here for the rest of my life, because I am content with the power I have, and will probably not get that anywhere else. I enjoy the power. I enjoy being intimidating. But, most of all, I do not know what the ward would do without me. They would be allowing sick patients out into the real world like flies. They would shoo them out the door as if they were able to live happily out there, not knowing that these patients do not just 'get better'. I know that the patients that I look over in the ward, are not capable of 'getting better'. They will be this way forever, that is why I will be here forever, to make sure they are not let out before they can handle it. These men cannot function on their own, and should not be let out. They should remain inside these walls, where they can know and expect a distinct orderly schedule for the rest of their lives. Lately, my job has become a little more challenging, but also more interesting. A man by the name of Mr. McMurphy has arrived in our ward. He sure tests me somedays, but I know that he will eventually appreciate me. Some of the other doctors on the ward had mentioned moving him upstairs to Disturbed, but I wouldn't have that. I wouldn't want him to be moved up there and let out. He should be thanking me for keeping him in the safe quarters of my ward. I am just waiting for the day when he adjusts to our schedule, and stops testing my patience. As for the other patients, they had conformed. They knew what to do. They knew when to take their medicine, when to sleep, when to clean, and when to speak. They did all these things, before Mr. McMurphy arrived. Now that he has arrived he has disrupted their conformity, but it does not worry me too much. I know that they will get it back once he has adjusted. Once he stops speaking out during group sessions inappropriately, the other men will return to their old ways. These men never worry me, because I know I have the power in this ward, and always will. At my worklife I am very confident and intimidating, but at home I am not so confident. I am very self-conscience of my body and the way I look. I wish everyday I was not given such a womanly figure. I hide it as much as possible when I go to the ward. I know how some of the men are.

The enforcers of conformity in our school is the principle and the school board. The principle makes certain dress codes that the students and the teachers have to wear. The school board makes certain rules for the school district. They do this to make the schools conform so there is no chaos, and to make sure that every student has the same opportunity as everyone else. The popular kids are also the enforcers of conformity at our school. They set the standards on what to wear, and if you don't wear cool clothes like they do, then they won't give you a chance. At social events, everyone conforms to do the same thing so nobody gets made fun of or sticks out. At games, the principle makes everyone conform to cheer the same cheers because he doesn't want bad sportsmanship. Everyone on the team has to wear the same uniforms, and the coaches wear the same outfits. At work, there is a dresscode and this is set by the owner of the restaraunt. Everywhere you go there are always enforcers of conformity.
In society today, I don't think that it is possible to be a nonconformist. Everyday you are conforming to something because there are rules and laws. You can where that green nonconformist shirt to remind people that it is important to be different, but you have to conform in different ways. I conform slightly, intentionally. When it's "sweat pants Wednesday" I try not to conform and wear sweatpants on that day. But if we dress up for basketball, than I do conform to dress up with the team. I conform both tentionally and intentionally. It's hard not to conform because there are guidelines already set up in socitey.

My name is Nurse Ratched. I am the head nurse for the ward. Everyone here works under me. I think I portray myself as a nice, calm women. Most of my time I watch the patients through the glass in my office. I take notes of the patients actions. Our new patient Randal P. McMurphy is, lets say, "different." I think he has some behavior issues and knows that he is not behaving right. Most of my patients are mentally ill and dont always know right from wrong. But, McMurphy is not mentally ill he should know right from wrong. He is causing chaos here. The first day he came I think he frightened my patients. He is always laughing, joking and betting on something. I believe he is here to try and take over because he is coming up with new ideas that the patients like and I do not think is necessary. Everyday he is doing something to see what my reactions will be. For example the other day he was up early walking around in a towel and singing loudly. I have kept my "cool" pretty well but this time he just went a little too far, I didnt freak out but I was angry. I didnt want other patients to see me so I tried to be as normal as possible while taking care of the situation. I enjoy my job and wont let anyone take it away from me including McMurphy!

I agree with magan t. that at school the principle is theenforcer but I do not agree that the teachers are. In a way they do enforce the students to conform but they themselves are conformers too because they follow the rules that the principle sets for eveyrone. I also agree that at work your boss is the enforcers because they are the ones who give you the dress code and tell you how to act. But, I do not agree that alot of people begin smokeing because they see coworkers smokeing or they take breaks with smokers. Somkeing is a personal choice and most that dont smoke know they dont want to so they have the self control not to start.
period 3.
I am doing subject 2 and 3.
2. In todays society I think that we have all been programmed in one way or another. I think that we have been programmed by the people we look up to or the people we respect in some shape or form. I think that because we are brought up the way we are, thats when the programming begins. When we are young we are told not to pick are noses or kick other kids. We are told what is socailly acceptable and what is fround upon. And we follow what we are told because we all want to be accepted as successful people that live a seemingly normal life with a seemingly normal family. We are programmed to do what our elders say and not question anything that seems right. We are programmed to be afraid of getting in trouble as so we dont cause any when we're older. We are programmed to basically do the right thing.
3. We are enforced to conform everywhere we go now a day. In school we are forced to be quiet and pay attention by our teachers and the higher ups. There are not many places where we are not forced to conform in some way or another. At work, at home, out on the street, there is always someone there telling you how to act and what you can and cant do. At work you have to dress and act a certain way as to make your boss happy. And while your at home you have to conform to what your parents want you to be like. even if we think we are rebelling against conforming...well nobody does it alone...so in a sense..aren't you just conforming to something else? I guess question 2 and 3 can kind of go hand in hand, being were are basically programmed to conform to what ever is normal.
Britt--What bar would Nurse Ratched attend? One where other robots, Terminators, cyborgs, automatons, droids, or mechanisms hang out?

I don't necessarily agree with nicole on that the United States pushes Christianity as the main religion in the country. Our government tries to get religion completely out of politics and government. Candidates don't want to lose any votes by degrading somebody's beliefs, so they won't talk about religion that much. I think the churches in the United States make us believe that other religions are bad, but not the government. There is a reason why we don't talk about God in school, and there is a reason why we study religions around the world. I think other countries around the world are 100 times more religious than the United States.

(3) The enforcers of conformity of our school are the principals and the superintendent, they are also the enforcers at games and social events along with the athletic director. At work the enforces are the managers, it isnt possible to be a nonconformist because if u start doing something else (lets say dress in black everyday) then you arent conforming to the majority of people but you still are conforming to the other people that have chosen to wear black everyday. I do conform but I dont really try to i dont even realize I am doing it, I wouldnt say that i conform entirely though. I would say that i do conform somewhat intentionally so that i dont draw unwanted attention to myself but other times its unintentional.
(2) I have been programmed to try my best in school and to try to get the best education that I possibly can because i have been told all my life that the more education you have the more money you will have and the greater your life will be, although now I know that, that concept is not entirely true, after seeing the Pursuit of Happiness I dont know if you can ever obtain happiness but only pursue it. Some of the happiest people that i know never went to college and some of the older people only finished 8th grade but they are happier than someone with a masters. I would say that the teachers, counselors and people in my family have programmed me into believing that money will give you happiness.
Nick--Aren't you and your peers better at enforcing conformity than the administrators?
i agree with cody's thought of not actually being able to conform because there is always someone else doing the same thing somewhere. With how many people there are living on Earth, we can't be unique.

(2) I think I have been programmed to love college football. Every Saturday I find it impossible to do anything but sit and watch college football from 11am till about 10pm. No matter what schools are playing or what the importance of the game is; I have to watch it. It's so exciting! Knowing that any team can beat any other team no matter the talent differnce. Take Oregon St. beating USC for example. Everyone in the world thought for sure that USC was going to blow Oregon St. out of the water, except for the players on that Beavers team. USC was ranked #1 and had ten times as good of athletes as Oregon St.. One thing they did wrong was underestimate the heart of those Oregon St. players. Seeing those guys rally behind each other and pull out such a huge victoy is really exciting to watch. To me there isn't anything in the world that is more thrilling to watch. College football is the best of all sports because it provides the most excitment and the game isn't ruined with money like the pros. College players actually have somehting to play for unlike the spoiled pro athletes who whine about wanting 15 million instead of 14 million(Because it makes such a difference!).
Yes, Mallory--Other places allow ideology, especially religious, absolutely affect everything that goes on in the country. Is it good to try to have a separation of church and state, like our government documents advise?
Yes I believe so because the teachers and older people dont make fun of the people that do not conform unlike the students do.

Conformity is a very broad-used word. I think that it has multiple meanings and ways to interpret it by what type of situations or examples of conformity is being shown. I think that people are 'programmed' to conform and in that those two are apparently related. In my eyes, I believe that everyone in society is a conformist in one way or another. Think about it.. We are all "taught/programmed to conform" to being healthy, being educated, working, and just living out everyday life. That's what we've known, and that's what we'll always know. That's why when we see an un-hygiened person we're a little uncomfortable and people that give up on their educations (ex: dropping out) are also looked down upon; likewise with adults that are jobless in a sense. (not like stay at home parents or people that are unable to work.. but you get the idea) We've all been programmed to think these things. I believe I was originally programmed by God, and that my parnets helped make that happen. They are all now my programm-ers. They have taught me their "conformed ideas" of right and wrong. They programmed me. They have effected the way I act, think, feel, and the way I believe in things. I think I could almost consider it that they have brain-washed me into being the way I am. :P This is where conformity comes in... Whether or not i 'obey' the way they have programmed to me is me conforming or not. I do believe I am a conformist in the sense that most of the time I follow what I'm supposed to do and try and make the best decisions possible. I also know that nobodys perfect and I do become a nonconformist in the sense that I don't always follow what I was 'programmed to do.' In that, I truely believe that it is virtually impossible to be a nonconformist. Living out life is conforming to life. Things as simple as that are conforming and we all do it. So no, I do not think that it's possible to be a nonconformist, but by the way we were programmed most things aren't intentional in the fact that those things come natural makes us a conformist. So there is a part of conforming in all of us. Although individuality is a skill people use to try to become as close to a nonconformist as we possible can. I don't like to be the same as everyone else and dress, talk, and act the same. I am what I want to be, when I feel I should be. and I know many people feel the same.. which that could be conforming to nonconforming?! This subject could completely go back and forth for a lifetime!
Is BVHS just a factory that spews out adults on a conveyor belt? Do you ever feel that you are mindlessly herded? Do you ever wonder why there are these subjects at all, when you may never actually use the information taught in them? Is BVHS just a micro-society that trains you to function in the macro-society of the great U.S.A.?

I would love you write about being Nurse Ratched in first person, but i dont think i would be able to do so. I see Nurse Ratched as robotic, mean, cold hearted, and nearly emotionless. I'm not a very good actress, and portraying a character such as Nurse Ratched would be very hard for me.
I think everyone is programmed to think in a certain way. If someone were to walk around naked, that would be awkward and rude to the people around that person. But why? I'm not saying we should all walk around naked, but things like that are programmed into us. I believe parents program alot of what we think or believe. After i read Karn's comment, I would have to agree with everything he said. I still believe in God, but I couldn't tell you the reason I do. I just do. The Bible is just a book, but it gives us something to believe in. I'm not being a hypocrite for agreeing with Karn and believing in God, it just makes sense.
I think our society is becoming "less progammable". What was once programmed into us to be beautiful, can now be ugly and vice versa. Our thought processes are changing... maybe the wires (in our brains) aren't connecting right?
The enforcers of conformity in our school happens to be as everyone else said: Talcott and Thorson. Those two are the main ones, but teachers as well as coaches can enforce conformity. Why do teachers give us all the same assignments? To conform. Why do athletes have to dress up for an away game? To conform. Even students can enforce some conformity in the school, what we wear and how we act. And no Tina you can't not conform by wearing all dark colors.. a lot of people do that and you don't have to be a goth to do it. At games, why do we wear black or red? I really don't think any specific person can be a nonconformist. You can say that you want to be one and try to act or dress differently, but in the end you always going to be or dress similarly to someone else. You can, however, not conform to a specific group; but you will be conforming to another group elsewhere. I admit, I conform. I don't intentially try to, but it naturally happens. I got my ears pierced. Do you know how many people have their ears pierced?? That's conformity. I shave my legs just like (almost) every other girl. Why did girls start shaving their legs anyway? Guys have hairy legs, too. Next thing you know baby girls are gonna be born without any hair on their bodies. Kind of off the subject...
Point is: Everyone conforms in some way.

2) I am a Pastor's Kid who has been programmed to hate sin and love everybody. I've been brought up to believe in Jesus Christ and only him. My father, the Pastor, has "programmed" us to do the "right thing", whatever that is. My siblings and I have been taught that smoking is cancerous, drinking is unnecessary, and swearing is not tolerated, especially God's name in vain. One of my brothers grew sick of this programming and programmed himself to what he believes in and his own morales, instead of my fathers. My father thinks his way is right, and for the most part I agree and choose to follow because we share similiar beliefs and similiar futures in ministry. Respect, kindness, leadership, and humbleness are all little bits and pieces of my life that I have been programmed to use and attempt towards others from both of my parents upbringing.
3) Everybody is their own person. They have their own beliefs and reason for their actions. But somewhere down the line, they all conform in some way or another. Nobody can not be a nonconformist, I believe it is impossible. If someone were to wear only black and say they are a nonconformist is a lie because tons of people only wear black. Jocks, geeks, goths, bandos, or even student council people conform to each other. For examply jocks wear uniforms, like every other jock or goths wear black clothes or accesorries , chains, and make-up. People conform to many things and they may not even know it. I conform to christianity, sports, and my friends; like going to movies, shopping, taking pictures, swimming, or just hanging out like many people do with their own friends. Friends tend to dress alike also, which brings confomity inside their little group or clicke. Some people conform intentionally to try to fit in and be socially accepted. They want to obtain and sense of belonging in this world. When fans go to a sporting event they conform with they clothes they wear or if they cheer. If someone starts clapping, most likely the rest of the crowd will join in to. No matter how you look at it, people conform somehow somewhere.
pd. 3
(2).I think that in some form or another we are all pre-programmed to think or act in certain ways. In a world driven by media it is easy to be swayed one way or another based on the opinions of others. Society has certain expectations for example graduating high school and going to college. Today's society tells us that if you dont go to college and get a degree you wont make any money or have a successful life. It begs the question why do we let other people depict what our individual success consists of? College is a good way to further your knowledge and to lead a more productive life, but has furthering your knowledge become societies norm and not of your own free will?
(3) I think that everybody enforces conformity in some way or another. Whether its the school principle, the teachers, the government or the students themselves we are all responsible. In many ways we are our own biggest enforcers of conformity. We feel the need to have what someone else has and to try to act in the same manner that others do because nobody likes the feeling of vulnerability and alienation. We all conform even in non-conformity if you go to school, have a job, or dont have a job you are constantly conforming to the world around you. I think that the only way to escape conformity is inside your own mind. The world around you can ridicule you for the way you dress, but nobody can ever force you to conform inside your own mind. Your thoughts are your own and it is within your free will to feel or think however you want to.
3.
I don't think it is possible to be a nonconformist. There are too many things in our life, that completely force us to be conformists. From our clothes, to our cars, to our activities, to the products we use, we are conforming. I believe the only way to be a nonconformist would be to wear no clothes, use no products, eat no food other than the very basic scraps you could find outside, and not be involved in any sort of group or activity. But, even then, would you be conforming into being a nonconformist? In every single thing in our lives we conform. If you don't want to wear the same clothes as everyone or the same color as everyone, you may wear all black and say you are goth, but then you are conforming to be gothic. You are acting like everyone else that is gothic. That is the same with every other situation. You try to be different, but someone else has already been 'that different' that you were trying to be; therefore you are not different, you are the same as those who were trying to be different. When it comes to not conforming to rules, it is entirely impossible. If you don't conform, you don't have freedom. Without freedom, you don't have a choice if you want to conform or not. Therefore, you are screwed. If you don't follow the rules in school, you answer to Thorson. If you don't follow the laws at your job, you answer to your boss. If you don't follow the laws of the state, you answer to a judge. And, if it turns out you were actually nonconforming(disobeying the rules/laws), then your stopped. You may not continue these actions unless you are willing to give up your freedom. But, anyone who does not want to conform is surely not willing to give up there freedom, therefore they will conform for the sake of their freedom. Ultimately, it is entirely impossible to be a nonconformist, because whichever path you choose you are forced to conform. Maybe it is possible to not conform slightly. It may be possible to do things a little differently, wear clothes that not too many people wear, or stretch the rules just a bit. That would be a slight nonconformist, but in my opinion it is nearly impossible to be an entire nonconformist.
P.3
My parents have programmed me to be a religious person. Ever since I was young I was brought to church and Sunday school once a week. I was "programmed" by the church to believe in God and his commandments. Even though I could rebel and not follow what I have always been taught, I don't. I dont think I rebel because it is my comfort zone, it is all I have ever known. I believe when you are programmed, it is hard to erase it because erasing it would be letting go of all you have believed in and known.
I don't think it is possible to be a nonconformist. Even when you dont conform to what society thinks is "normal", you in return conform to what people say is "abnormal." It is hard not to conform because it is natural just to follow what you see or have been taught. A majority of people have a group of close friends, that have the same interests. Within that group of friends you eventually conform to their beliefs and their actions. There are many enforcers in everday life, at school it is a principal, at work it is a boss, at home it is a parent. When you are brought up to conform to different groups, it is hard to break free because those groups make up who you are and they define everything you believe in.
period 3
(2). I think we all have been programmed to love or hate something in some way. People usually enforce us to believe or think certain things such as when my friends are around me, usually I will act differently to try to think or believe the same things they do. Another thing that may have programmed me is my parents. From the beginning of birth to where I am now, my parents tell me what to do and what to think. Also by being around my parents and friends I start talking and acting like them because I'm around them for most of the day. The president or government also has had an influence to program me because on the t.v. or newspaper they tell me what to believe in a certain crisis or how to handle it. Teachers also have a big influence on programming me because for more than three fourths of the year I spend almost 8 hours in school, and most of those hours are listening to what a teacher says, so I am bound to believe in some of the same things they do. I have been programmed by listening and watching t.v. and conforming to my friends or society. Everyone in their life has been programmed by someone in some way, it's just a matter of who by.
(3). There are many enforces who people try to conform to at my school. Mostly people will want to conform or act like all the jocks at my school because they are the ones who are usually the "coolest". People who are the enforces of conformity at football or basketball games are the ones who are the loudest and have the most spirit so then everyone tries to be like them, and that's why our school's crowd is so loud when it comes to sports games. When your with your friends at school or at your house everyone usually tries to conform to one person, and that person is the leader of the group. That is how you get groups in the school because everyone conforms or acts the way the leader of your friends does and believes whatever they do. Dr. Talcott is another enforcer of our school because he says the way we should behave and we have to conform to that. I think it is impossible to be a nonconformist because you have to conform to something or else you would come to school naked each day or disobey every rule at school. I don't intentionally conform to everyone at school, but I know I do because sometimes I catch myself talking the way my friends do or acting like them. Everyone has to conform to something at some time in their life or else the world would chaos.
P.3
Like many people I have been programmed to think, believe, hate, or love something? Since my dad is a Vikings fan, I aslo am a Vikings fan. Because of this my dad programmed me to hate Brett Favre. Everytime we see Favre in action we can't wait to see him fail or dosomething stupid, like throw a key interception in a playoff game that results in a loss.Everything about Favre makes my dad and I sick, from his hard counts, to off balance throws, to the way he carries himself on the field. Favre is the biggest Soap Opera in all of the NFL, and his recent trade to the Jets just proves how he cares more about himself as an individual rather than the team.
The enforcers of conformity in our school are basically everyone, from the principal, to the the teachers, to other students. The Principal makes sure you don't wear certian things and requires you to follow certain rules. The teachers enfore the rules that the pricipal requires you to follow. Other students make you conform by making fun of you for wearing certain things of doing certain things, this makes you not was to wear or do those things again and forces conformity to be "cool."
At social events others around you, your friends, and your parents can enforce conformity.
At games coaches enforce conformity.
At work your boss forces conformity by requiring you to wear a certain thing, and if you do not conform there is always a possibility of losing your job.
I don't think it is possible to be a 100% nonconformist. There are just certain things you have to conform too.
I would say I conform entirely, intentionally, because it is the easier way out. That way you don't get looked at funny, get made fun of. It is just easier to be a conformist rather than a nonconformist, IT JUST IS!
looks like everyone agrees on that no one can be a nonconformist. now that's conforming.
Period 3
2. Everyone is programmed to think or believe something at least sometime in their lives. After 9/11 the media and the people of our country itself
turned almost all of us into hating Muslims and believing all of them are terrosists. In the media and in TV if there is a common belief about something and you don't agree with it you are considered weird or not right. As young kids we are all programmed by our parents to believe something whether we will admit it or not. Ever since a young age I have been programmed to go to church almost every sunday and dress up. I was probably programmed to be a Nebraska Football fan by my dad and his brothers whether I believe it or not because if I would of never been exposed to their football team I might not of became a fan. My parents definitely programmed me to get my homework done right when I got home from school before I could go outside and be with my friends because they knew if they let me do that I wouldn't come home for a long time and then I would never finish my homework. It got to the point where you are so used to doing that that you wouldn't even ask to do anything until i was done with my homework (almost robot like). Alot of times other people will program you with their actions. They may program you to like or dislike something or someone depending on what they do or dont do.

There is no doubt in my mind that everyone has been programmed in some way or another to believe, hate, favor, something. For example being from and playing sports for BVHS I automatically have deep disliking for O'gorman athletics. I would call them a rival team and if you dont hate O'gorman teams then you are probably looked at as being odd. This sense of hatred of OG comes from years of back and forth battles through athletics. Since both schools are generally top performers at many sports the intesity of each game against each other is high. Also many people have ties to O'gorman so wanting to out perform them is very desirable. In each sport I take part in I always get a little more amped up for the OG game because I have been programmed through the years to want to beat them at all costs.

Enforcers of conformity at school and any school events is usually the teachers, principal, vice principal, and AD. At school the majority of the rules are coming from the higher ups but are enforced by teachers. It is much easier to be a non-conformist at BVHS than at a private school where there are dress codes and more rules but here almost everybody conforms in some way all though they dont have to. I believe it to be a slight conformity such as wearing name brands and talking certain ways. I dont think when people are getting ready for school they intentionally prepare to either conform or not conform. No matter what you do you are going to conform in some way. Even if your a non-conformist such as a hippie you are going to conform to the hippie lifestyle. So there is really no way around conforming.

(3) The enforcement of conformity in our school comes from everyone. It comes from the teachers, students, principals, and the superintendant. Student who are popular set trends that are "cool" like the way the dress and act. The superintendant really enforces it with so many strict rules and regulations. The Principals are enforcing what the superintendant asks and they punish those who don't conform. The teachers conform by making all students do the same kind of homework. This class somewhat escapes that by blogging. The school conforms us by making us take the same required classes. If I didn't have to take foreign languages to get into some schools I would have never took Spanish.
If this is true, then why don't more of us follow through?: we should be judged based on how we treat the "least" among us. It seems the "least" among us get prejudged and hated and segregated the most.
Per 3
Pre-programmed perspective on life- It is quite possible to believe that we are who we are just because we grew up the way we did. So in fact we are programmed by our surroundings and the people we associate ourselves with. What we hate, who we love, and our beliefs are all bestowed on us by figures of importance around us; fathers, mothers, aunts, uncles, friends, leaders, ect... I don't deny being programmed, because I have. Society has made my public-self, and my personal experiances make my private-self. All the maxiums and morals I have are all the direct consequence of the actions I have made and the actions made upon me; both positive and negative.
Enforcers of confromity- We automaticaly assume the staff are the enforcers of confromity, liaisons of rigidity. But who are we over looking in this quest? What about our fellow peers? Nonconformity is a myth; by nonconforming you are conforming with the noconformist. Not categorizing yourself in a group puts you with all the other non-categorized people. We all conform, unless you're a hermit in the hills of Mongolia. We all subconsciously try to be like the people around us. If you study a group of companions, you'll notice the similarities in their mannerisms; the way they talk, the way they dress, the way they act. Conformity is imminent. You just have to go with it.
Pd. 3
I think I have been programmed many ways. As a young child I think my mom and dad were a big part of me liking or hating something. My mom would never make anything she didnt like, for instance spaghetti. Now whenever I have the oportunity to try it I wont because I dont think I would like it because my mom doesnt. I think my friends have also programmed me. My friends dont really care for the "preppy" girls in our school and I have to say that they get on my nerves sometimes. I have be said to believe what I am told so I think I am programmed in that way also.
3
3) The only nonconforming I take literally and to be true is "Do not conform to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Then you will be able to test and approve what God's will is—his good, pleasing and perfect will." Romans 12:2. This states to not conform to the ways of worldly things but to live your life for Christ. But again, if you take this passage to heart you are conforming to Christianity and to be "Christ-like". So people who use this still conform in a different way.
Period 3
2)Yes, I believe everyone is programmed to think, love or hate something sometime in their life. Its kind of like your parents influencing you when you are little to respect others and treat others the way you would want to be treated. Well...thats exactly what being programmed is really. I remember when I was really little and my mom and dad said that I couldn't leave the table until I ate my vegetables. That made me learn to like them because if I didn't eat them I would not be able to play because I would be sitting there till they were gone. Also your friends program you in some way. If they like something or believe something you feel the need to have to like or believe it too.
3)In our school i believe that the enforcers of conformity are the teachers, staff and even the students. At social events i believe it is the ones who stand out more, the more outgoing type of people. Same with games in the crowd it is the more outgoing type of people and the coaches. For work it is your boss and maybe older more experienced employees? I Think that everyone is a nonconformist in some way or another. Yes alot of us may like the same things or dress and talk to same, but we all have different life stories and backgrounds that make us all different. I don't really conform extremely. But I do believe that I am conformed into believing what I believe and the way that I act just by the way that I was raised as a kid.
pd. 3
(2)
I think everyone has been programmed in there life at some point. I think parents have a great impact on their kids. Kids are helpless when they are young and as they grow they are going to grow by their parents rules. If a child has parents who dont really care where they are or what they are doing are the kids who are out doing things they shouldnt be doing. The parents who control or somewhat control where they can and cannot go are the kids who dont get into so much trouble. The second the child is out of the house, to college for example, is the time they are going to get out of the programmed mode they have been in all there life with their parents to now there own life. They now get to make all the choices they want. Also i think friends program other friends. If your group of friends is out drinking or doing drugs, then most likely you will be out doing that too. I agree with josh b. he said that the more influence a person has on your life the more you will act like them. This is compeltely true. You are going to act like your friends. Friends share alot of the same qualities, otherwise why are you friends? For example when a friend starts making fun of another person it might drag on you and then before you know it you are then making fun of people too. Its the way society works. Another big programming i have been involved in his religion. I was born and raised by very christian parents going to church every sunday and youth group every wednesday night. They programmed me into going to church and into believing and knowing my religion. They did this by taking me to chruch with them every time they went. Now i am old enough to make my own choices on should i go to church today? I still am going to church every sunday with my parents because that is now what i think is the right thing to do.

The enforceres of our school would be our principal. The enforcer of our class is the teacher in each class. At games coaches would be incharge of there team, they are the enforcers. Also, if you are sitting in the stands at games then your friends will enforce where you sit, but also the principal would be in charge or where you are sitting (like the student section). At work your enforcer is going to be your boss, the one that is incharge of everything. Rachel S. said that nonconformist choose not to let others influence them in either the way they dress or the way they think. I agree with her. They are going to be the ones that dont really care what others think. Nonconformist are the people who are going to try to be different. The biggest thing i notice about conformity is clothing, the way people dress. Conformists are just going to wear typical clothing that everyone else wheres. Nonconformists are going to wear different items of clothing, try to look different than everyone else. I dont try to be a nonconformists or a conformist. I have my nose pierced though and not that many other people have theirs pierced. There are some things i say and do differently than other people. I started playing sports when i was young cause all my friends did. My clothing is usually just typical clothing. I'm not afraid to stand up for what i want to be and wear what i want to wear.

Mr. C- I have always wondered why some of the classes at school are even offered! I don't feel i could use any of the information learned in some of the classes later on in life. Yes, brandon valley is the micro-society and we are all getting ready here for the macro-society.
Pd. 3
(2) I believe that everyone has been programmed to believe, think, or act as they do on a daily basis. I believe our initial programming begins once we learn how to think, this programing usually comes from our parents early in life. Our parents introduce us to things such as religion, races, and even state of income. We all look up to our parents at a young age and imitate what they do. We imitate it so much it becomes habit. I would like to see someone grow up without parents and see how they are influenced if at all. I don't think you are programmed to love by any specific person or thing, but I do think you are programmed to hate. Some people hate snakes or spiders, some people hate certain kinds of foods, and some people even hate other people. Some people hate different religions, some hate different races, and some people just hate whoever sets them off. As you move on in life as adolescence, we begin to be influenced by our friends, and what we see on t.v. or in movies. We see things that look or sound cool and try to re-enact some of them. Someone might see their favorite actor smoking in a movie and think, "oh thats so cool I want to do it" and they will go out and do that. Then one of their friends might see them doing it and they might start doing it also. You might hear an older kid at school say a swear word and all of his friends laugh so you think that you might get a few laughs doing it too. So later in life I think we program ourselves more than others do, but we choose what we want programmed into us. We decide this sounds funny, or that looks cool and decide we might as well do that too, to conform with everyone else in society. It isn't always bad however, you might see your friend who in middle school didn't do very well in school start studying really hard and you may admire that and start doing the same. You might have a friend who goes to a youth group meeting every week and has a bunch of fun their so you decide to go. The programming isn't always a bad thing, it could be very good for you also.
(3) I would say the enforcers at our school would have to be Mr. Thorson and Dr. Talcott, and all of the teachers. They all make sure that everyone is doing what they need to do while here at school. Thorson and Talcott make sure everyone is getting to class and is behaving in an acceptable manner all day. The teachers make sure students are doing their assignments and not falling asleep during class. At social events I would say the enforcers are the ones who try to run the show, the who are the "life of the party". At games the enforcers are definitely the referees for the players on the field. I would also say it is the team captains and coaches who enforce the team to make sure everyone is doin their part to help win the game. I do think it is possible to be a noncomformist although it would be tough. You would be ridiculed by others because you act or dress differently, or just believe in different things. I know I conform so I don't attract any unwanted attention or insult anyone. I intentionally conform for these reasons.
Here we all go again conforming is right Kayla! haha.
If it's impossible to not conform, is individuality even possible?
Period 3
2. I have been programmed and the main people who have programmed me are my parents, especailly my mom. I've been taught to believe in and love God, don't ever question him and I should be good because I do not want to go to hell. THe devil is very bad. And now I don't think I could not believe in God. I will always think the devil is bad. When My parents would tell me to do something like chores or stop whatever i'm doing that I'm not supposed to be doing, I would stop. I was programmed to love my siblings no matter how mad I would get at them. The way my parents feel about politics, I think I may think the same way they do about it. Because they've always told me what they thought and what they thought was good or bad about it and I was supposed to agree with them. If I have a different opinion about something and I would tell them and they would almost brainwash me into thinking that way they do. Now I'm not so much like that. I want to program myself. A little programming from other people isn't bad, but why should I let other people force me to think like them. I was taught that I should be the better person. And I shouldn't be like other people and shouldn't do the wrong things.
3. The enforcers of conformity at school would have to be the principle and teachers and everyone that is, well, not a student. Who have high statuses than us. We all know we have to be at school at a certain time or else we will get a tardy. We ususally don't want that since too many will eventually end us up in a saturday school. And we know that we have to have assignments done by a certain day. We want our grades to be good grades so we try to have homework done so we don't get a late grade. Study for tests. But some of us do have a very busy schedule and it can be hard sometimes. If we didn't want to conform at school we would just show up when we wanted, not get our homework turned in or even finished and ending up with bad grades. But I do conform at school. I want good grades so I do get my homework done and try my hardest at tests and being to school on time. At church we conform by getting up and going to church on time, dressing up nice or respectivly descent, and we sit there and we listen to what the priest has to say and we listen to the readings, sing, pray while everyone else prays. Some of us and forced by our parents to go to church. So we do conforn even if we don't want to. But for others, if we don't want to go to church we don't have to. So everything I just said about doing at church we wouldn't have to conform. I don't really go to church anymore. There was a point where my parents had me going every Sunday. Now I just go when I want to. They don't make me. So I conform to going to church when I want to. I also conform at work. I do what I am supposed to do and what I'm supposed to wear. I'm there on time and leave when they tell me I can. I'm there a long time sometimes, mostly on the weekends. I'm there because they need me there. Sometimes I don't want to be. I would rather be doing something else, but I'm there. But then I'll usually take some days off because I don't want to be there to conform.
I think I do slightly conform to stuff. I think everyone does to a certain point. But some people have to, like our parents with their jobs. THey need to support the family.
Sometimes when all the fans at a major college football game are doing the same gesture and chant, they look like they could very well be at a Nazi rally. It can be scary, to have 112,000 people all passionately believing, yelling, and demonstrating the same ideology. Mobs are potent; I'm just glad we're able to control ourselves enough not to commit genocide versus an opposing fan base.
(1) My initial thought of McMurphy is one of hate and confusion. He's trying to hurt my patients recovery with causing so much trouble. Soon they will think they can get away with it too and sooner or later there is going to be chaos and they are going to hurt one another. My methods of recovery have been working ever since I became head nurse. This is basically where i live. everything is in a nice, precise order. I really don't have time for a social life outside of work. The patients and other workers here need me too much for me to go out and have fun. They can't do anything right without me there to guide them. Because of that I don't have to many friends except for the other nurses, doctors, and i guess, patients here.
(2) Yes i have been programmed. By my parents, school teachers, pastor, friends, other family, strangers, everybody trys to program me. My family tries to program me to love hunting and they succeeded in that. I love to hunt, it builds patience and percision and it can be fun. They taught me by taking me out hunting when I was younger and they talked aboout funny things that happened when they went out and i thought that hunting would be fun. My parents taught me to be a gentleman where ever I went. They also tried to get me to a straight A student and every time i would get C my mom would freak out. But I reprogrammed her so when i got a C she wouldn't flip out so bad. My mom had also programmed me to always try and do more than what is required.
Wow Thahn.
you have quite the broad vocabulary!
Pd 3
Everyone who has ever lived has been programmed. We are programmed from birth. Tv, newspapers, and magazines make us conform. Even people who claim to be non-conformist conform, even if they don’t realize it. They conform to ways of disconformities; no one looks like a complete individual. Each person can be put into a group. Other countries are populations are programmed to hate us, not on an individual basis but what they believe we are. In return we hate other countries because of what we have been told for so long that we now accept it without challenging it. Our parents where programmed to do what they do, to raise children, work, own a house. They pass on the programming to us. For generations the American standard of programming has said that women raise the children and men work. That is expected, it is not a result of genetics. Instead it comes from what we hear, read and see everyday. Slowly this conformity can shift, but it remains fundamentally the same world wide. Men are criticized for feminine, and not being able to provide. While women however, are criticized for being cold, unloving, and keeping a dysfunctional house. There is world programming, national programming, and regional programming. On a world basis we have been told that green house gases are the cause of global warming, and most people now believe this because it has been said by so many reputable people. Nationally, we have been programmed, by years of foreign policy. We are told that as America we are supposed to govern the world. The government tries to force its beliefs on other groups, to brain wash them. Sure democracy is a good thing in a place where people are safe, but if they are not able to vote the system doesn’t work. Even regionally we have been programmed. Here we have been programmed by heritage, economic, and religion. In other parts of the country do you think they talk as much about ethanol? I bet they don’t because they haven’t bought into it as the answer, sure it is an alternative, but there are other ones less talked of here because of media. Conformity is everywhere and impossible to stop.
At school everyone enforces conformity. Teachers enforce the rules, which force you to conform. Students force you to be normal, which is just perception of the most prevalent group of people. Conformity and programming is impossible to ignore. Some conformity is obvious, some is subliminal. When every one goes to a football game in red and black it is for school spirit, but in most cases it is to simply fit in. At work dress codes enforce you to be traditional to fit in. This uniform is not to break employees spirit but, instead to make customers feel more comfortable. When you go to get a job, a college degree looks better, even if it doesn’t pertain to the job you are applying to. In the minds of us brain washed public someone with a degree must be smarter. It is nearly impossible to be completely unique in this world of six billion people. If you have I fresh rebellious idea chances are it has already been done in some way or another and you are just a copy whether you realize it or not.
P. 3
I think that no matter if we want to admit it or not, we are all programmed to think and do certain things in society. We all have to go a certain speed, unless you want to give the government some money. We all have to thinkk that our country is the best, even though we rely too much on the men and women in Congress to a point where our economy becomes very unstable. We have to dress a certain way when we go to work or cheer a certain way when we go to a game. I think that we all are programming each other into thinking and doing certain things. Congress may make laws to programm us, but we also programm them to act a certain way and to think a certain way. So I just think it's a cycle that the United States can't get out of because we put so much pressure on ourselves.
You reprogrammed her, eh, Dan? How? I'd love to be able to do this to my mother sometimes.
Ever seen the film Office Space? You really should. It shows a workplace dystopia.
Office Space rocks!!

1) I run this ward with a cool, calm, and collected demeanor. The residents on the floor fear and respect me. All follow my systematic methods other than McMurphy. He really grinds my gears and pushes me over the top. He is a threat to the way things are done in my hospital. He can evoke a response of uncontrollable rage in me like no other resident. He is a problem that neesd to be dealt with. The only method of escape I have is leaving the hospital to return home at nights. I keep my home tidy and orderly. I do not have a husband to take care of because I am overly controlling. I run my home like the hospital. It is my domain and I do not allow anyone or anything to disturb the consistancy from day to day. I have cats because they are easily tamed and trained. They can not care for themselves and act much like the residents I care for in the hospital. Outside of work I have no friends. People view me as overbearing and can not stand my domineering nature. I am unable to conform to social standards and make friends.
3) Everyone is an enforcer of conformity in some way. At school the teachers and principals try to enforce their rules and codes in order to portray their school in a certain light. As long as the students follow these guidelines, their purpose is fulfilled. They have many methods of enforcing conformity. They have school rules which, if not followed to the "t", result in suspension, saturday school, or other unpopular punishments. Students also enforce the conformity in school. People wear certain clothes or act a certain way and their actions directly effect others. People tend to find the easiest route, and if other students set a path, that path will be well traveled. It is very possible to travel off the beaten path and title yourself a "nonconformist." Even this self-titled nonconformists have followers who find this route appealing. In a sense there are no nonconformists because there will always be others who follow a similar route. I find that I conform to many standards. I expect myself to be a good focused student so I can put myself on the path to college and then off to the working world. In order to achieve this result I must conform to certain rules and regulations set before me on the way. Everyone must follow their own path to success, but they are expected to follow social standards through their journey.
Why thank you Julie, but maybe next time you can spell my name the right way. Just a thought. But religon is the biggest setter of conformity in my view.
P.3
I agree with Britt W's comment, the media plays a major role in pragramming us to belive certain thing, like all Muslims are terrorists.
I conur with Mr. Anderson.
Dan, I programmed my mom that exact way!! haha
I agree with Jaron Chase Douglas is an enforcer of our school. He is an intimidator and a bully sometimes.
I agree with Jaron Chase Douglas is an enforcer of our school. He is an intimidator and a bully sometimes.
Julie asks a good question--"Is individuality even possible?" It seems that McMurphy is "his own man." Isn't he? Will he be able to infect any of the men with any life? Will any of them be able to become "rehabilitated" or "alive" again? Or, has society and the Big Nurse worked them over too much, too permanently?
Also, with change comes sacrifice, usually.
Your walking down the street minding your own business, someone you no spots you and says hi. You are programmed in your head whether you know it or not to say hi back or at least reply in some odd way. Whether that way is ignoring the person, attacking, or be polite you reply. If we nevered replied people would basically do nothing all day everyday minding their own business not interacting or do anything what so ever. So it's necessary to do so, sometimes in how the world works is YOU are going to have to make the effort and speak out whether you would like to or not, everyone has done it and will keep doing it until the end of time.
How about the Armed Forces? They use brainwashing techniques to the highest degree. But mustn't they?-- to create people who are "combat-ready" (if there is such a thing).
I get scared when I see magazines that young girls read. Lily is my daughter, 1.7 years old. Soon, she'll not listen to me as much as she'll listen to her friends and to magazines and to celebrities. I'm really scared, to be honest. Of course, I am not the only source that she should ever pay attention to, but I know anorexia, bulimia, depression, and plastic surgery rates are off the charts for a reason.

(3) Conformity enforcers are the people you look up to. Its not a certin person at BVHS, its who you think you want to be like. You could want to be like a cheerleader like Alexa or be a theature person like Tessa. You dont have to have just one set person you conform with, you can conform with a group of people. I believe that when people say they are non-conformists, then they are just conforming to non conforming. You do conform no matter what you do. You might wear a football jersey one day, then a band shirt the next day, but your conforming to what everyone else does (liking football or liking certin bands or our own band).
(2) I think that people are programmed to love and hate certin things. Say you are sitting at home with your family watching monday night football, and your family really likes the team thats playing, you are programmed to like that team. It may not always happen that way (you may not like the same team your family likes) but you normally all like the same team. Then you are programmed to hate the other team because they are playing the team you like. You are also programmed to love your family. Its just how society is. You may not always love your family but more then likely you do.
Jennifer B.
I also believe that the media programs us. I also believe that our family programs us. For instance i was born in Wisconsin and every single member of my family is a Packers fan. When i was little my dad told me i could be a packers fan or i could live in the garage. By listening to him say this it made me think that if i was a non-packers fan i would be a bad person. My father had programmed me to become a packers fan so i could conform to the rest of the family. I think that growing up with a family with specific beliefs and values that we adapt to the beliefs and values of our families because that is what we know. The government also programs us to think a certain way. The government sets laws that tells us what to do, whats good, whats bad and most people follow these rules because we dont want to go to jail or pay a fine to the gonvernment.
There are tons of enforcers of conformity in our communities. Enforcers can be principles, bosses, parents, peers, the media. Anyone who pushes their values or ideas onto us in an enforcer. If anyone goes against what the enforcers think, the enforcers will convince the rebel that the rebel's ideas are totally wrong and out of place. I don't think that it is possible to be a non conformist because people who try not to conform only conform to another clique i think that no matter what you like and believe there will always be a few more people who think and believe the exact same things. I don't believe that people conform intentionally. We just act the way we were raised and some people are raised to make other people happy and in order to make other people happy, they do what other people want them to do. I think that we subconsciously conform to what we think people want to see us as.
2) I believe that we have all been programmed in a way. I personally have been programmed by my parents to be a polite, generous person. It's not a bad thing but thinking about it more deeply makes me realize that I really am programmed. I also feel really programmed at school. We all have to dress a certain way, act a certain way, and be a totally different person than we would be outside of school. If we dont act as we are programmed to in school, we are punished, which is another form of programming.
3) At my job at the Lewis Pharmacy here in Brandon, The Chief Pharmacist is my enforcer of conformity. She keeps all of the activity in line and makes sure that nothing goes wrong. I am forced to conform to what she thinks is good. For example: I have to always be doing something, whether it is cleaning, running the registers, filling the bottles, answering the phone, or one of my many other responsibilities that I have. I have to conform to what she wants me to be doing all the time. I can't be a nonconformist because I wouldn't be doing my job if I was. It took me about 6 months to catch on to what she wanted me to be doing, but now that I have it down, and I'm good at it, it doesn't even phase me. It just feels natural to do what she wants now and she no longer has to ask me to do things. I just do them myself. I am very conformed to what she wants me to be, but I hardly notice anymore because it has become a habit.
Period 5.
1. My thoughts on Mr. McMurphy are that he is the leader of the institute. He wants everyone to follow him but sometimes thats a good things becuase he leads the patients in the right direction. Chief has become more stable when McMurphy is around and comes out of his shell more. McMurphy always tries and gets under my skin and I don't show that he does because I know thats all he's trying to do and I can't let him see that it bothers me. McMurphy does not need to be in the institute i belive he is perfectly normal at some points but maybe im wrong. I spend most of my time at the institute becuase i have no family. The patients are my family and I do not like going home to the outside world to nothing. I know most patients don't like me but I don't know how to show them how much i really do care about them and they are my own family becuase i have no other family. McMurphy inlightens the patients and gives them hope i belive. He makes them think that if they really wanted to get out of this place they could. I don't like to release patients alot becuase mostly they are unstable but on the other hand i dont want to see them to go because im afriad we will never get anymore patients back. I'm afraid of loosing my job and or loosing my patients.
2. Ever child at birth is programmed to believe in something. You don't really get to choose what religion you are baptized into when your three months old. When you are raised that religion your whole life you don't know anything else and thats all you believe because your parents made you believe that or made you believe there beliefs on races, religions or right from wrong. In some cases this is a very bad case if your family is atheist and you believe highly in god there is going to be a problem becuase most of the time they aren't going to believe you when you ten years old you believe in god and they probably wont go to church with you. Parents raise there children to hate certain people or believe that certain races are bad and dirty and therefore the kids know no better and do what their parents do because thats their influence. IF your parents are drug dealers and thats all you see growing up or if your dad beats your mom your gonna think that is normal and your maybe gonna do the same thing growing up. Us kids need to break the norm and get out and see how other people live and other cultures to see if we are even the right religion or the right "social grou" maybe we don't belong where we are at and we need to break out.

Something has happened to me in the past that has mad me like this. I am cold, I have no feelings or emotions towards any of the patients I work with. I feel that they are all sheep and I am the shepard, they must do what I tell them to do and do it when I tell them to do it. McMurphy is a virus (Matrix) and I am the anitvirus and I have to try and filter him out of my perfect society. " She almost runs the place likes it's hers it somewhat reminds me of the book (The Lottery) how everyone is almost robotic." Outside of the instition I rarley do anything fun I do what needs to be done and then I go to bed and get ready for the next day. It has almost become a routine for me that I must follow the same way every day no obsticles should pop up.

I feel that everyone on this earth has been progammed in one way or another. Such as politics when someting extreme has gone wrong or something out of the ordinary they do not like the pubilc know about it because they feel that it will cause a crisis and people will freak out. Or when you go to school when someome is wearing a cool outfit and people around them like it, even if you don't like it, you are still going to go buy it becasue all of your freinds have approved of it. You want other people to like your stuff even if you do not like it, and instead of needing stuff people now-a-days have learned to want stuff which they are complete opposites.

I think classes--those that are not seemingly/immediately relevant-- are offered to make us smarter, simply. And to teach us problem-solving, teamwork, social, direction-following, logic, and reasoning skills. I've not used my College Algebra course, taught by BV's Mr. Kraig Presler (who worked for Augie at the time) directly, but I have used the focus and discipline I worked on in that class. I have not used the class's content, but I have used the training, so to speak. Do you agree with me, Steph?

2) I strongly believe that everybody in society has been programmed in some shape or form. Growing up kids are greatly influenced by their parents. Whether they see it or not they do act alot like them and end up having the same ideas and views on most things. I have been programmed in numerous ways by numerous people. My parents have programmed me to love God and his ways. Also to love your family and friends, although that almost comes natural to you. They have also taught me to stand up for what I believe in and to be strong. They have done this almost nonverbally they just lead me by their actions. I have also been programmed to hate through athletics. When it comes game time I autimatically hate my opponent. Whether that is out of competetiveness or taught by my coaches, I dont know. Maybe a little bit of both, but regardless I am always ready to compete and bring down opponenets.
3) Everybody conforms. Even if people think that they aren't conforming. They are conforming by not conforming. People want to be "popular", be with the "in crowd" and do whats cool. Some people are just scared to start their own ideas because they are scared they will be rejected by society. In school the enforcers of comformity are the kids that everybody looks up to. The ones that are well known and have their name out their alot. These are the kids that most people want to be like. They look up to their ways and try to mock them. At social events, people who speak up and stand out are the enforcers. At jobs, employess want to be like the manager. I don't think it is possible to be a nonconformist because by not conforming you are conforming like the others who don't want to conform either. I will admit that I conform entirely. I wear the clothes that all my friends wear, I wear my hair like they do, I participate in the same things that they do, its just the way it's always been for me.
pd. 5
(2) I think everyone has been programmed to be something, believe in something or hate something. I don't think it is possible to go on with your life and not be programmed into any certain way. For example, my parents have programmed me to use manners, do chores, and to make sure I get done what needs to be done. No one is a complete individual. Everyone belongs to a certain group. People are the way they are today because of the way they have been programmed; the way they have been taught and brought up. It you are an athlete you are part of a group and you conform to look like an athlete and act like athlete. Same as if you are a singer or in band, you try to act or be like other singers and bandos. Many gothics think they are the ones being nonconformists when really they are just conforming to that lifestyle instead. So really no matter what you try to do there is always conformity involved. I have also been programmed by my teachers throughout the years. In elementary school we learn things such as friendship, sharing, integrity etc. Their job is to make you into a well brought up person and to teach you everything you will need to know in the real world. I think a lot of us are all being conformed the same ways mainly by teachers and parents. Also, when it comes to religion we are all conformed to believe in one thing and that is to love God. It is hard to picture life without conformity.
Period 5
I believe I have been programmed to think, believe, hate, and love certain people and things in life. Ever since I was little I was tought wrong from right and continue to seperate wrong from right. I've been brought up to think that drugs and drinking are bad even if everyone else is doing it. I have been brought up to believe that I can be whatever I want when I actually grow up. I've learned to love my family more than anything in the world. Friends come and go, but family is there forever. Not long I ago I developed the hate in "what if" questions. They do more evil than good in my eyes. I believe that I was programmed somewhat by my parents. They are the ones who raised me, who taught me wrong from right, and have faith in everything I do. I also believe that I programmed myself. I'm going to believe what I want to believe wether its the complete truth or not. No one can really change another person, they are going to believe what they want. I think everyone programs themselves a little.
At school the enforcers of conformity are the teachers, who are enforced by the principal. At school sponsored social events the administration are still enforcers of conformity. Social events outside of school depend on the situation. If it's a party, I'd say the person who is throwing the party. At games, the players enforce conformitiy. Everyone dresses in their school colors, or in a certain theme when going to a game, all to support the players and give them confidence. At work the enofercer of conformity would be my boss. She does what she is told to do, and she tells us what to do. It's a chain reaction. I honestly don't think it's possible to be a nonconformist, especially these days. There's conformity in everything we do. Going to school, social events, games, and at work. I'm sure there's even conformitiy within families. When you're little don't you want to be just like you mom or dad? I know I did. I wanted to be exactly like my mom. My views have changed since then, but I'm glad I have many of my mom's traits. I conform slightly and not intentionally. All high schoolers conform. We all get up every morning and come to school every day and most go to work after school... everyday.
Enforces in todays society unheard of, people picking on others in todays society thats outrageous. Now clearly im joking when I say that; all people (including the bully him or herself) have been picked on. Some get picked on everyday, some get picked on once in awhile some, best case scenario just once. However when you think about this mainly just applies to the men, men pick on one another daily, it shows that we are accepted when lets say that I get picked on and someone makes fun of me odds are they're just joking because if its someone I know I can laugh about it. Now I'm not saying when people pick on others they aren't trying to scar you for life, im saying thougth that if a friend of yours picks on you it's just meant as a joke. We hope though that we all can laugh about it, if someone is being picked on they might retaliate and fight back creating a huge fight it happens we just hope it wont happen.
Pd 5.
If I was Nurse Ratched, I would just let McMurphy take over the ward. It would be funny watching everything fall apart in complete chaos or watching a new structure of "government" form. It also means I wouldn't have to be the one watching over everything and give me a break. I would let the black boys just run around and do whatever they feel like (drinking) and see how far they could get before they needed me to control them again if even they did at all. Some of the ward members might even come out of their own shell/fog and feel more comfortable, or some might try to take over McMurphy becuase he cuased a problem. I would hook up cameras and just watch what would become of the thing that McMurphy creates and eat popcorn or something. Also, when backing out of the position and giving it to McMurphy, I would kind of disappear and show that I didn't care. I would back down but not in a cowardly manner so I wouldn't get made fun of for it. This way, if I did need to take control again, they would still all be afraid of me instead of thinking I was a coward. With that said, I would also stop just putting people in a different ward so I didn't have to take care of them, that shows I can't handle it. Instead I'm just passing my problem to someone else instead of fixing it. It shows I'm weak. Instead I would keep the person and made sure I fixed them. I would make the other wards fear me, not just by making someone a vegetable, but by actually changing them. If you can't solve a problem and you just basically kill the person on the inside, have you really accomplished something, no. Example- Torturing someone you can make it last as long as you want until they bend to your rules or realize what they did so they can change. Killing someone you can only do once and for that slip second, and that person doenst learn anything or change from it. It just proves you can't handle anything.

Period 5
1) I am Nurse Ratched. I believe that McMurphy is becoming a problem with the other patients. As long as I just don't let him bother me and in a way ignore him, he will become less and less of a problem. McMurphy doesn't understand that he doesn't just get to leave when his sentence is up, he gets to leave when I think that he is ready (which may be years). I think that once he realizes this he will stop bothering the other patients and stop arguing with me. My home life isn't like many others. I have no husband and no kids. Although I do have a fish. My home is spotless. It is a gray splitlevel house with blue shutters. I have a very small back yard that is always cut nicely. My house is plain and simple. My parents aren't around anymore and I do not have any brother and sisters. There is nobody for me to talk to and nobody that cares about me, so why should I bother caring about anybody else. I also don't have much of a life outside the mental insitution. I don't usually go out with anybody. I don't go out with anybody because I can't seem to make friends, some people just see me as overbearing and a control freak. I like things always to be done my way, even if it is the wrong way.
3) The main enforcer of conformity at our school is Dr. Tailcott. He tells all of the teachers and staff what they must do, when it needs to be done, and how they need to do it. Mr. Thorson is the next enforcer at Brandon Valley. Although Dr. Tailcott may tell him what to do, Mr. Thorson also tells students and teacher what to do (for example, how they need to act). After Mr. Thorson comes the teachers. Dr. Tailcott tells the teachers what, when, and how to do things but teachers tell the students what they need to do. They give students homework and tell them that they have to read to certain pages. If the students don't do that they will be punished by getting a bad grade. At social events and games at Brandon Valley I think that Mr. Marso is the main enforcer. He tells the students how they may or may not act. I believe that the cheerleaders also have a part in this. They do cheers and expect the crowd to cheer with them. All the people that cheer with them are conforming. At work the manager to or boss is the main conformist. Yes, I believe that it is possibe to be a nonconformist by no doing what you are told to do and not following the crowd. I conform all the time. I am conforming right now by doing this assignment blog. Sometimes I don't think that I conform intentionally, but I do confom everyday.
(5)
Going to school as programmed us in many different ways. Every time we hear a bell we know it’s programmed into our brain that the class is over and its time to go to the next class. And as a punishment sometimes the teachers would hold us after the bell saying that the bell does not dismiss you and that the teacher does but yet when we hear the bell we still try to get up and leave the class even though she hasn’t dismissed us. There are many things that were programmed into us as children. You don't hit people because that’s mean. Walk in straight lines in alphabetical order. For many years we were programmed to start the day of with the pledge of allegiance.
In our school the school board is the main part of conformity because they make the rules that go into the student hand book. It shows what we can and can’t do. The enforcers of the student hand book are the staff they are the major enforcers and the prosecutors are Mr. Thorson and Dr. Telcot. As far as social events go it’s the teachers that supervise it become the enforcer of the night.
It is possible to be a nonconformist. While being a nonconformist you are still a conformist. You would not be the only nonconformist. Take this as an example of the Dead Poets Society a movie you would have watched last year if you took English ten. This movie shows a perfect example of being a nonconformist but yet still being a conformist. You don’t always have to be 100% a conformist either. You could be slightly a conformist but still unique.
p.5
3)The enforcers of conformity is you peers. They are the people who make fun of you for not being like the most popular or the best dressed. Others make fun of you if you do not act or talk a certain way. Teachers and officials enforce you to follow the rules even when they are not necessarily right. Your bosses and managers enforce comformity because they force you to dress a certain way and do certain things. For instance, you cannot have a showable tatoo at certain jobs. They are setting rules so that others conform to them. I think it is almost impossible to be a nonconformist because to nonconform to one thing makes you conform to another. For example: If you are a nonconformist at school and you break all the rules, well you have just conformed to what we call the "nonconformers" and you are doing what they are doing so all in all you conform to them. You can just choose what you conform to, but you cant really never conform. I am sorry to say that i conform slightly. I will not go outside my beliefs in order to be like someone else, but i do look up to people and i want to be more like them in order to make myself a better person. I don't think we intentionally conform, i think we do it because we want to feel like we belong somewhere.
2) i have been programed believe in a certain religion from when i was little. My parents programed me to believe in christianity and follow that way. I also think we are programed to like certain food by commercials we see on tv about how delicious they are and how much we need them. Also my parents have conformed me to dislike a certain group of people because according to them they are a "bad group of people" and that i should never be associated with them. Even though they are probably a great person, because they dress or act a certain way we stereotype them as a bad group. Our family really influences what we think, like, hate, even believe in. They raise us so they put what they think, love, and hate into us and we believe everything is right and true.

(1) My name is Nurse Ratched. I am the head nurse. McMurphy one of the many patients we have here. He is young, and very loud. I really dont believe he has much wrong with him. Why just the other day he was singing at the top of his lungs in the bathroom. Now I dont think that sets a good example for the other men. He was walking around in only a towel, that surprised me. I had to yell at Mr. Washington to get him some clothes. I am the top person here and I dont like it that McMurphy is trying to take over. He brought up the idea of using the table room as a game room.
My life is very uneventful. I dont have many people who would come visit me. I dont have any family left. My house is big but I have no one to share it with, so I get lonely sometimes.
(2) I believe we all are programmed to do everything we do. We are just like sheep. Society programs us to think, to act, and to speak like we do. We all are so afraid of what others think of us that we become like everyone else so we dont stick out. If you try to be yourself and 'different' people label you, or judge you based on what you believe or think, the way you dress or the way you look. I have been programmed, I'll admit to it. I am so scared that I will stick out if I dont 'do this' or I dont listen to this kind of music. But I am getting back to being myself. I dont like being 'programmed'. It's insulting, we shouldnt have to become something we are not just to fit in.

Will is right Chase is a beast!
Period 5
1.) They call me Nurse Ratched. I run the ward. McMurphy is not mental so that i think but he does somethings that are outrageous just to win that bet with the rest of the patients. He will do anything just to get under my skin, or to make me get angry and raise my voice in front of everyone. My home is a place I go after work to get away from everything. I am not married because I scare all the guys away with my strict rules and what not. I have no one to love me; my family is far so therefore no one visits me. My parents had really strict rules when i was a chlid so now i carry the strict rules on at my job at the Mental Hospital since no one is at my house for me to carry on the rules. My life outside of work is dull i do nothing except sit at home because i have no friends. Everyone i meet thinks of me as stuck up and snotty. I am lonely that why I am like this. I am Nurse Ratched.
3.)I think in some way everyone conforms to something in life. I would say the confomity leaders at school are the teachers and Talcott and Thorson they make guideliness and rules for us to follow. Everyone who follows the rules are conforming to them and the ones who don't follow them are kind of like rebels. We all conform at work because were suppose to follow rules and we learn to treat customers with respect and listen to them. And if we don't conform that way then we will most likey get the boot and get fired, for not acting the same good as everyone else that is working.
5
2) I think that everyone is programmed to love or hate something. I have been programmed to love Minnesota sports by my dad. I have been a Vikings fan since I can remember. I think this just naturally happens. I don't think I have been programmed to hate anything except the Green Bay Packers! But this isn't true for some people. People that are members of the KKK weren't born to hate black people. They were most likely programmed by somebody else. It is very common to be programmed by a older figure. I think everyone is programmed in some way or another.
3)In today's world it is hard to be a nonconformist. Everywhere you go somebody is in charge and there are rules. In our school Dr. Talcott, Mr. Thorsen, and the teachers are the enforcers. At school I don't think it is possible to be a nonconformist because if you were you probably wouldn't be in school. Going to school is in its self conforming. It is possible to nonconform but, those people are usually the ones who are in trouble with the law. Everyone conforms a little, it is usally unintentional. There are other ways to be a nonconformist though. This can be in how you dress, talk, live, etc. So I think that everyone does conform at least a little but, some more than others.
He's not as much as a beast, like nurse ratched but more of a physical beast
Pd. 5
#2
I think that everybody has been programed to some extent, because the news, tv, books pretty much everything you see in your daily life gets "programmed" into your mind. It is like sterotyping people or peer presure those are things that we are programed to do like it or not. I myself seem to have been programmed to love football. I love watching it, playing it in real life and on video games, and wouldnt miss it for the world. Their isnt really anything that I can think of that has programmed the love of football into me, I just love it cause I have wathced and played it my whole life. On the other hand many people dont like to play or watch football, but the Superbowl is the most televised event in the world so obviously many other people like it too. Many things are programmed into the way you do things, some of the time you know why they are and other times you might not even know it is programmed into you. That is the way our society works, they want to catch your attention and make you do the things they want you to.
#3
Everybody is our school is an enforcer. Teachers, principals, students, parents, every person in this town enforces the way our school is run. Teachers basically are the biggest conformists ever, because they take information that is given to them from other teachers that they have learned and then teach you what they were taught. So they are just teaching things that are normal and everyone agrees on. Their is a reason we cant teach religon or other topics in school, because then we would be rebelling against the conformity of our schools/government. Also principals have most of the power to keep everything in line. They can punish you, they can make you do things that you may not even want you to do. I conform some, I think that everyone does to some extent. I do things that others do, "follow the band wagon" as they say so I dont seem like an odd person, but who doesnt?
pd.5
At our school there are different enforcers of conformity depending on where you are or if you are at an event or game. During the regular school day, our enforcers of conformity are our principals. They conform us to be civilized students and to act a certain way. At games, Mr. Marso is usually the enforcer of conformity. He makes sure all the athletes act a certain way and he keeps the crowds under control and wants everyone to act a certain way. I don't think conformity is bad thing at all. I conform just like everyone else, sometimes intentionally and sometimes without even knowing. Comformity is just a part of life and it is hard for people not to conform. I believe people have become more judgemental these days and that makes other people scared to start their own ideas or to not follow everyone else.
Must we have bosses? Wouldn't we all get the work done on our own? Couldn't/wouldn't BVHS thrive without teachers and administrators?
Pd 5 As Nurse Ratched i think McMurphy is a unwanted reble that wants to bring down the system, kinda like in starwars with the rebles trying to bring down the empire and Nurse Ratched as Darth Vader. My home would be orderly and have no mess or dirt with every visitor fallowing the rules of my house, and every thing having its place. out side the institution i have a set things to get done, and getting them done the right way every time in the same order.
In your School the enforsers of conformity are the kids that think they are better then the others, as in saying what they are wearing is stuped or dumb forcing them tho change they way they dress so they dont get made fun of, girls seem to be the worst. At social events conformitly is set by who every is the best looking and form there other ppl want to dress the way they do so they can look as good. Same with games and sports events the kids from school that are "popualer" decide whats cool and wear and act it and if u are wearing something they think is not cool u get made fun of witch kinda forses u to dress the way they do. At my work any way the dress code is set and most of the ppl that work there are weird and dont care how u act so every one is pretty much them selves. It is im possible not to conform cuz if u arent conforming u are just conforming with the ppl that think they arent conforming lol, and in saying that it must mean i conform to something one way or another and i would say slightly. It is not intentional it just happens to every one really no matter what u do, unless i guess if u really dont think about it and just pick out chloths with no thought and act with tho thought but i doubt any one does that.
Pd 5.
I think we do need bosses because some people aren't self motivated enough to do the work on their own, or would do very little of the work. Some people get different things done at different rates.
period 5
My name is Nurse Ratched, if you call me nurse wretched I will beat you down! I used to have a nice secure environment where everyone including the doctors themselves were all wrapped around my fingers doing everything I said. However one person changed the entire ward itself and his name is McMurphey. He has been causing chaos ever since he has arrived at the hospital. I know deep down he's not even sick he just used this as an excuse so he wouldn't go to jail. Now my goal is not take charge of the ward, but to take of McMurphey himself and I will accomplish that. He recently has been speaking to an indian named chief Bromden everyone including me thought he was deaf and stupid. Turns out McMurphey exposed Chief's true self and I will make sure to change everything to where it was once was, a hospital that was controlled by a visionsary and that visionary is named Nurse Ratched not Wretched.
period 5
I know at hyvee if we didn't have bosses no work would get done. At hyvee (where i work) we all mostly get along and we all mostly like to talk and i think that without bosses and supervisors that no work would get done because either we would all be talking or no one would show up for work because no one is there to make us come to work. I think that BHVS wouldnt thrive without teachers or administrators because without teachers or any authority in the shcool no one would show up and no one would learn anything. I think that learning would go to the back of our minds and we would just go onto working a job to support our families and ourselves like they did in the olden days.
Per.5
For anyone to say they haven't been programed by society, parents, friends, ect. in some sort of manner is an utterly ignorant statement to make. Unless you're born in the middle of the wilderness with no contact with society, with only yourself to rely on, you can't say you haven't been programmed throughout life. For example: If you are born into a Midwestern christian family you will most likely be raised christian and wil remain christian for the remainder of your life, just like if you were born into a Bhuddist family you would most likely inherit Bhuddist beliefs and remain a faithful Bhuddist till death. Isoloation is the only way to protect yourself from programming, but who wants to be isolated for their whole life? I sure don't. Even a person who rebels against conformity is now conforming to non-conformity, people don't realize that the strongest form of rebellion is indifference. The minute you let others dictate your life, dictate how you act and you feel, you've let them win. Ultimately, the only thing you can do as a person is do what you like to do, wear what you like to wear, and speak like you want to speak, regardless of the judgement people pass on you. That is rebelling at its best, not succumbing to the pressures of society and the 'norms' they constantly force us to adopt.
Period 6

I think everyone in some way or another has been programmed in some way or another. Being from the Midwest I believe we are all programmed to talk a certain way and act a certain way simply because of the style of life we have. I think I was programmed by my parents and siblings more than anything or anyone else. Growing up I was always traveling with my parents to watch my older brother's baseball, basketball, and football games. I wanted to be like my brother and my neighborhood friends also had older brothers who they wanted to be like so we would all go out in the yard and try to immitate them by playing sports. I am positive that I am the person I am today because of the effect my brother and his friends had throughout my childhood. I believe that people between the ages of 4-13 are in their major "programming years". Jack Van Leur and myself were neighbors growing up and he also had a major role in programming me to the sports world. We shot hoops in the driveway for hours on end thinking of new moves and discussing what was going on in the professional world-things I am still doing today.
(1)
I think McMurphy is as sane as I am. The only reason I think he is in the hospital is because he is lazy and he wanted to leave the work farm any way he could. He wants to overrun my system here because he thinks he smarter than I am. My system in the hospital is bulletproof, I have had others of McMurphy's same caliber come in and try this before but I have always won. I am going to trick McMurphy by thinking that he is getting in my head. I am delaying on sending him to the disturbed ward because I want to see just how smart this man really thinks he is. Outside of the hospital my home is pretty dull. I have a nice house with nice things but I am the only one living in it. I have a very boring life that is centered around my job at the hospital. My work has always been my life and I don't have a family because of this.
Wise beyond your years, Nick P.
Wise beyond your years, Nick P.
pd. 5
(2)Everyone is programmed to act a certian way. Either from your parents or who ever. As your growing up you are made to believe and do certain things. We all go to school and learn pretty much the same things. We all need so many credits in certain areas to graduate, and almost everyone has taken the same classes. By taking these classes you are conforming to what the school district thinks is neccessary to do well in the working world or in college. Wether you think you need less credits in one area and more in another, in the end you have to conform to graduate. Almost everything you do is aimed toward making yourself more like a person or a group. The clothes you wear is a good example. The people who want to be viewed as a prep, wear those kinds of clothes and the gothic people wear those kinds of clothes and so on, even the kid that wants to be viewed as normal tries to conform to what they think is normal based off of what others think or do. In the working world its the same way. For most jobs you have a set uniform that you are required to wear, or a set schedule/certain amount of work to be done, by doing this you are conforming. So its almost impossible to get away from conforming, because in order to become successful you must first conform to some thing or another.
(3)Every thing has an inforcer of some kind. Sports have officials, coaches, and captians. Who try to get everyone to think the same and follow the same rules. Nations have governments of some sort, trying to get people to stay within limits set by them. Schools have teachers, and principals, who try to keep things going smooth be holding kids to the same rules as everyone. Its impossible to not conform no matter how hard you try. Anything you do has been done or there is a group of people who think the same way. You conform everyday. To drive you must conform by following speed limits and signs. So its very hard if not impossible to not conform to everyday life.
P.5 (2) I think everyone has been programmed to think/act in a certain way, whether they were influenced by their friends or family. For example I probabaly wouldn't love snowboarding so much if my friends didn't ask me to go, because they got me into it. I also think that I am programmed by myself too. Because I have my own religious/political views.
(3)I think the enforcers at our school are Dr. Talcott, Mr. Thorson, and the faculty; minus the lunch ladies. The enforcers at sporting events are the referees and the coaches because the call the shots. The enforcer at work is your boss because he/she set the example of how she wants her employees to act, and what he/she wants her employees to do. I think it is almost impossible to be a nonconformist, unless you live on an island or something of the sort. You pretty much conform to something everyday, or at least I do. For example if you wear hollister, american eagle or other popular brands, technically your conforming right? Because everyone else wears that stuff too. Or if you go to church and belevie in God because your parents do, and you don't want to feel left out. Not because you actually do belevie in God. Or if you drink and smoke ganja just because everyone else does and it's the "cool" thing to do you are a conformist because you're not doing it because you need to, or you want to, but because they are doing it.

1. ohh! That McMurphy! Relax Ratched! Just ingore him. You will get him. Just relax. I will get you McMurphy! What should I do with McMurphy.... Oh yes I should forced him to clean that dirty latrine.. hmmm he may stop what he's doing. chuckle.
After a long day with McMurphy, I arrvie at home. I am very organized at home. My bedroom has a bed that is perfectly made and dressers full of uniforms, perfectly folded. In my dining room, there is a table near the window and chairs that are pushed in with the flower vase that is exactly in the middle of the table.
When I leave the mental institution, everyone looks me up and down. I have a hard time with that and try to ingore everyone. I try to do whatever I want to do. I make sure no one disturbs me or my plans. After work, I just go home, run to my bed, put my head in the pillow and scream. I have no one to talk to. No one wants to be with me. I think they are afraid I will bite them.
2. Yes I am programmed by everyone as I program them. When I respect someone, someone will respect me just as if I cruel to someone then they will be cruel to me. Mostly I am programmed by my parents. They taught me to love and kind to everyone. My dad taught me to be a good sport and work hard to show my effort. But that taught me to work hard in the life because now I know that I can do it in sports then and I realized that I can use it for the rest of my life.

I am Nurse Ratched. There is a patient here at the ward that is named McMurphy. He really knows how to get on my nerves. He also slows down the recovery of the other patients by bothering them constantly. I don't do much outside of work. I read a little bit every night.
I have been programmed in many ways, just like everyone else. My parents, friend, and some teachers have programmed to think and act in certain ways. My parents have programmed me to be a Republican and not a Democrat. They have also programmed me to be a Lutheran and not a different religion. My friend have programmed me to act like them a little bit. Teachers have programmed me to think in certain ways. Some teacher even try to program us to think deeper than is needed.
How could you possibly think deeper than is needed? Isn't that what separates us from the beasts: the capacity to think deeply? Or, maybe we do try to do too much? What knowledge is useful, after all?
Wow, Kristin! You're into Ratched's psyche for sure! (Seems pretty accurate to me, if she's human after all.)

(2)in a conversation with my boyfriend this weekend we discussed what teaches us better experences or people telling us what to do like our parents. we both agreed that experences are the ones that shape us. even to the extent of programing us. an example that we talked about would be driving into a blizzard. you will always remember that experence of driving into a blizzard and almost dying better than if a friend were to tell us a story about them almost dying. life experences are very strong. and they are part of what programs us. but we also cant forget about the lessons learned by our parents. i was taught at a child to be Lutheran and the costoms and triditions of the lutheran religion. i was also taught my views on a bunch of political topics. such as the death penelty and abortion. i like many other teenagers follow what thier parents believe. i am repbulican like my parents. The intersting thing is that many people think that they will change throught college. i hear stories from people who tell me that they have changed thier views because they were around different people and experencing different things. but in that case are we just being reprogramed by a different person? why does everybody want us to believe what THEY believe?
(3)lots of different people force teenagers to conform. principles teachers chaperones referees judges managers all keep us in line at diffent events. i believe that it is impossible to not conform because even if you try not to conform you are conforming to not conforming. that was a little confusing... what i mean is that if you try sooo hard to be against the grain thier are about 100000 other people trying to do the same thing. so all of thoes people are thier own conformist group. i believe everyone tries to have thier own sence of style and personality but chances are thier is someone who has the same style. like i bet someone has thoes shoes or that shirt. its impossible to fully conform or even be a nonconformist. i would say that yes im a conformist i follow the crowd. i think everyone does to an extent.
I have been programmed to hate certain things or people. I think everyone in their life has been programmed to hate a person because they did something to a friend or a relative or something like that. I have had friends tell me to hate this person because they made fun of them or was flirting with their boyfriend, and I did hate that person just because all my friends and I were told to hate the person so we did cause we were programmed to. Eventhough the rest of my friends and I didnt even talk to the girl ever or know her we still just hated her because we were told to. Another thing I have been programmed to hate is cheerleading. My mom and dad always told us if we ever became cheerleaders or soccer players for that matter they would be mad because they hate them both. So my sisters and I stuck to the sports my parents like because we were programmed to hate those other sports. My mom played basketball, softball, volleyball, and ran track. I have played all those sports because those are basically what my parents aloud me to play. Finally,I did quit basketball my sophomore year because I didnt like it. My mom was basically forcing me to play someting I didnt like.
Period 7
I personally think we have been programmed, maybe not intentionally but in the end we have been. We have been programmed how to act around other people, about different situations, how to react to everything and anything. For example we have been taught how to love someone or something. We express our feelings openly by giving hugs and kisses to the one we love. Whether it a family member, a friend, or someone of the opposite sex we all have been shown or taught how to express our feelings and also how to respond to others who are expressing how they feel. Hate has also been programmed into us, our family and friends maybe have tried not to show hate when we were young but it was there. We see people fighting we also see things on TV and in movies that just make the hate more real. Hence making hate almost out weigh the love someone can give. We have not only been programmed by the people around us but by entertainment and media. TV and movies show us the perfect way life should be or to go to the opposite extreme the terrible things that can happen to us, death, accidents, murder, and everything else in between. Media makes sure we are not sheltered they will print and tell everything that has happened whether it’s true or false they will tell us.
I believe that the enforcers of conformity in our school is the principle, teachers and even the students themselves can become enforcers of conformity. We all think of the teachers and the principle to be the enforcers because they have to be. They are trying to keep order in a school, but yet the students can also be enforcers. The students may not realize they are doing it but in reality they are. They pick and choose who is popular, the style of clothing that should be worn, how we should act and what we should say; at least to a certain degree. The students may not think they are doing it but we all see it in the halls. How if one of the “popular” students starts wearing a new kind of clothes shortly after everyone else will believe that is what they should wear and if some of the students are not following they are called out and made fun of; or if not made fun of looked at as if they have committed some kind of crime because they are not conforming to the norm. Any place we go there are always going to be enforcers. It could be a restaurant , work, a sporting event there are always going to be rules that need to be followed and some one always is going to be there to enforce them. I also don’t think that you can be a nonconformist. To a certain degree you can be but not entirely because the person who thinks they are going to be a nonconformist ends up be a conformist in the nonconformist world. There will always be a group that they fit into. They will just move from one group to another thinking they are rebelling when in fact they are conforming to the nonconformists of the world.
Arielle--You make a good point. Is the media more concerned about getting us "correct" information or "desirable" information, that which gets good ratings? We always have to keep our critical mind open.
The people you choose to put yourself around are your programmers i think. You can say all you want that i'm gonna think for myself and do what i want to do but i think when we are making all of our decisions we have our friends, parents, or even people we hardly know in mind and that shapes what and how we feel about something. My parents have influenced me alot and i've had their beliefs, interests, ways of life instilled in me and they have made me who i am. We all have that group of friends that help form you into the person you are as well. When i'm older i'm gonna look back and think about the people in my life and what they did for me i think and not about what i did for myself that made me who i am, because thats not how it happens. It's almost like we dont have any control over it it just happens and you go with it without thinking about it.
Isn't cheerleading good for something? I think it is wonderful that cheer and dance has/have been made into a legitimate, recognized competition/sport. I will just want my daughter involved in something. And to be a good student, too, of course. A scholar, like you College Bounders.
Or, are cheerleaders in charge of brainwashing the crowd at events?!

(2)Everyone is programmed to think a certain way. The only people who aren't, are those that choose to forgo regulare contact with others. Usually these people are thought of as strange or weird which makes it even harder for them to be "mainstream". From the cradle are parents of forced their ideas of conduct upon us. The same happens at school. Friends can be just as bad as either of these. We are taught to conform to a belief, even if that belief is to not conform to others beliefs.
(3)Almost everyone is a enforcer of conformity. If you aren't, then you are pretty much just a vegetable that doesn't stand up for anything. What happens at a social event if you try to go against the flow? You are outcasted! You get told to shut up, or get out, or in extreme cases beaten! For my work at lest, the managers are enforcers but my coworkers have been known to become them too. If you don't do what you are meant to be doing, you get yelled at. Or, you may even be given more work to do as punishment. But is it really possible to be a nonconformist? I say no. There is no such thing as a nonconformist. Just multiple ways to view the same thing. Even if you go against the flow, its because you reject the way the flow is going and want it to go somewhere else. Hopefully there is a reason to this rebellion but there doesn't always have to be. Some people just get kicks out of making chaos. So in a sense it is confoming to nonconformity. But do we completely conform? No, we never trully can. Certain things can be instilled in people but the core of a person can't be changed-can't conform. So unintentionally we are all nonconformist at heart because we are all different. And because we all conform to individualality we are conformists. Sort of like the yin yang symbol. There are two halfs that are codependant on each other to be what they are.

(1)I am Nurse Ratched. All of my patients think I am a mean supervisor and that I only got my job because of my social connections, but I had to work my butt off in order to get to where I am at. Just because I was a Army Nurse doesn't mean I didn't go through rigorous training like the rest of the military. I have seen stuff that I wish I never would have. This McMurphy fellow that comes in here and thinks he can run the place. PSH! I would like to see him try. If he tried to run this place, it would turn into party place. He would throw the rules out the windows and sit back with some cards, a beer and a pack of cigarettes. He would rip the rest of the patients out of all of their cigarettes. When I leave this place, I go home and relax in my massaging chair and watch a movie or two. While at home I will think of things I can do to make the mental institution better, but it always comes back to the question if the patients can handle an extreme amount of change. In the end I always end up leaving things how they are because changing the daily schedule could harm the patients.
(2)I believe that now a days everyone is programmed to believe or do something. Whether it be believe in god or the classes you take in school. I personally only went through the whole confermation thing to help my mom please her parents, because they are old time Catholics and do everything by the book. Honestly I think the Catholic religion is stupid they try and tell you that you have to hate gay people. They try to tell you that no matter what happens that you can't get an abortion. They try and tell you how to live your life, and I think the whole thing is bogus! The only thing that gets close to how stupid the Catholic religion is, is the way that you are told which classes you MUST take to graduate high school. Like what is the purpose of taking a fine arts credit or a math class beyond geometry if you know you will never use either for the rest of your life? There isn't. Some people will say you have to take certain courses in college to graduate too, but that is only if you choose to major in that subjuct. Like obviously if you want to be a doctor you are going to have to take some courses on the human body, but that is your choice to be a doctor so you should know what you are getting into.
Period 7
I have been programmed into loving music. My dad is a dj, and I share his love for most of the bands he likes. I don't feel like I'm being forced into doing so, but it makes me wonder if I was programmed into loving it that I don't even know what I like or respect with music. Usually I think I'm a noncomformist when it comes to music because I never listen to any of the new music, nor do I like it (or do I and I don't let myself?). Nowadays, when people try to noncomform, they wear old band t-shirts that say "Rolling Stones" or "The Ramones" just so they aren't recognized as the comformanistic (not sure if that's a word...) group. This irritates me because most people wear them without ever listening to the band before in their life. If I'm going to wear something and act as a billboard, I would at least like to wear something that represents me, and what I believe in or like. Also, I have been programmed into hating the Green Bay Packers. With my dad being from Minnesota, I have always bleed purple (Minnesota Vikings). We always talk about how unfair and lucky the Packers are, and how unfortunate the Vikings' season always end up being. I believe it's more out of jealousy than anything, beings that they had Favre for 16 years. Writing about this I realize how much influence your parents have on you. Usually sons and daughters will have the same taste in teams, clothes, music, food as their parents. This starts at a young age when the kids are most influentual. On the otherhand, some kids are polar opposites what their parents are because of lack of respect or rebellion.
I think we ourselves are the enforcers of comformity. The trend seems to be set by the most respected people in school. The respected people act as rolemodels for the more insecure group, so whatever the rolemodels do, everyone does. For example; for a few years, there has been a tradition of "Sweatpants Wednesday." Every Wednesday, some students wear sweatpants. Some time ago it must have gotten started by a small group and spread like wildfire to the point of half the people in school do it. No matter what people do, they conform somehow. Sometimes, people do like to dress up in Hollister polos, and some people do like to wear chains and dye their hair orange and pink. It's the viewer who determines the level of comformiity. However, there are the people who see those who have enough respect for themselves to dress like they want to and feel the need to conform to them, because they want to be "different" or "the same."
Yeah...that's all I got.

I think that everyone in some shape or form has been programmed to think, believe, hate, love something. When your a child you dont know what to like or dislike, and how to deal with situations. The older people in your life is who you will look up to and base your opinions and how you think, on how they are. You are most likely to be influenced the most by your parents. They tell you right from wrong, and you watch them and take notice on everything, which will form who you are for the rest of your life. For example, many kids at brandon are in an activity, we have some cliques who dress the same and sometimes act the same. Everyone always usually want to just fit in and not be completely different. Everyone wants to be themself but are always somehow like the people they surround due to influence. You may not like something but when your friends do it, you may learn to like it based on being around them and likely what they like. Some kids think that they need to shop at expensive stores and have name brand stuff to try and be cool.. Everyone does it, and you may not notice it but it happens whether you want to believe it or not. I dont think this we need to look at all of this in a bad way either. Because it gives you and your friends something in common. You talk about the same stuff and like to do some of the same things which is ok. I thnk as long as you are yourself for the most part, conforming is not a completly terrible thing.
(3)
There is a enforcer in any activity that you can think of. At our school i think the enforcers are the principals and the school staff. They set the boundaries and limits that all of the students go by. Also I think though that some of the students may be an enforcer to conformity. They may not relize it but people may look up to them and want to wear what they wear or do sports/ activties that they are involved in. It all just depends on the person. At social events at school I think that Mr. Marso is the main enforcer because he always knows whats going on and helps out with all of the activities and sports at our school. Without him everything wouldnt be organized and be the way they are. For games at school i think that the one loud and cheering is the enforcer is the enforcer. They are showing that you should be cheering and rooting for you school to support and cheer them on. I think at work the boss is the enforcer. Everyone that works for them goes by there rules and usually looks up to them since they are higher in ranking then the workers. The boss tells everyone to do something so everything goes to as planned. It is hard to notconform. In my opinion everyone one conforms. They may think they dont want to be like everyone else, which is the majority of people. So they for example dress different. But if you think about it they are just ending up dressing like someone else, so the cycle never really stops. You can slightly conform. For example you may dress the same as your friends, but you may like different movies, or play a different sport. Usually everyone has some things that they all like but you can still be yourself. I think that conforming may and maynot be intentional. I think it all just depends. You may not notice that you act and dress like your friends. But also if someone sees how everyone else dresses they might think if they dressed like that then they would be cool or something. Everyone conforms in some shape or form, but always needs to somehow remain them self to be a little different.
Period 7
#'s 2 and 3
2. Everybody is influenced at least partially by those around them. Whether it be by their parents, friends, teachers, or just society, every living being has adopted the customs of others. Personally, I have been programmed from birth to fit in, to be normal. This can involve anything from loving pizza and hating mushrooms, to believing in Jesus. In the early years of our lives, the most influential people we are around are our parents. They have taught us how to behave in public, how to eat, how to speak, and even how to dress. As we progressively age, we're less influenced by our parents, and more influenced by society and our friends. We are programmed to be the same. Those who rebel are also being programmed to rebel. It's nearly impossible to be your own person when there are so many different things telling you how to act. From our teenage years and on, we start to become our own people. We draw the lines between what we believe in and what we don't. At the same time, however, I'm not sure it's us who are drawing the lines. Are those around us actually the ones influencing us with what to believe and how to act?
3. Everybody in our schools is an enforcer of conformity. The principal and administration give us guidelines on how we are allowed to dress, where we are allowed to go, when we are allowed to do it, etc. At the same time, students, who are practically the opposite of the administration, are telling us how to dress, what to say, and how to act. Those who don't fit in are outcasts. This threat is enough for anybody to follow the social guidelines. At work, I'd say our employers and the customers are the enforcers. Employers inform us on what to wear, what to say, and how to do things. Customers overall are the ones that decide all these things. If a customer isn't happy, your employer isn't happy, and you aren't happy.
I wouldn't say it's possible to be a noncomformist. Even if you're not comforming to the normal way of things, you're fitting in with those who are trying to be noncomformists. Either way, you're conforming to something. I conform moderately. When it comes to things I wear, I would say I conform, but as to my morals, I don't. Most of the things I conform to or don't conform to are intentional. Then again, I know there's things that I do without realizing I'm doing them.
It has been said that computers were fashioned after the human brain. Do you have in your brain "dropdown menus" or "Start buttons" or "links" or "sites" or "databases" or "folders"? I guess I do...

Like a lot of the other people on here, i to was programmed by my parents. From what i think tastes good to who i want to be the next president of our country. They taught me everything i know and naturally i look up to my parents, especially my dad, whenever i need advice on certain things or just some common knowledge i go to him because hes the most prominent male figure in my life. My mother also has a part in it too like i'm catholic becuase she is. i'm "independent" with mainly conservative views. i like the "rocky" series and the ufc just like my father. i believe in what is moral and right like my parents. My parents were always friends with everyone, and so am i i hang out with the jocks or the kids in all the sports, the nerds or kids that play video games all the time, the kids that like to party and be differant from everything and i mean really differant, just everyone i don't rule anyone out because of the way they look or anything they themselves cant change.
Not just my parents have an influence on my life. I'm sure the TV does too, not so much anymore but i know mtv had and influence on me i liked the music they played. and i dont really listen to new music, usually if its not on the radio i dont think i'll like it.
My friends also, because they are my peers and if they like something new i have to like it too generally because i hang out with them, if i dont then im withdrawling from the "normal" and am considered wierd. but i pretty much like everything they like and dont do or say anything i dont want to do or say. So it works out pretty good.
I think this programing is a good thing because its what makes you who you are and makes everyone differant and more interesting. Like i find it interesting when someone has a very intense view on a certain subject that maybe we don't have the same opinion on. I think it makes for discussion and you learn more.
7- Everybody in the world conformes a little. It isn't an option you just have to do it. If you were clothes no matter where you get them they are conformed unless you make them yourself. If you get any news from the radio, tv, or even newspaper you conform with other people to find out whats going on in the world that is so messed up. I sometimes wonder do people feel like they need to have some one conform them. For example some contries have a dictatorship yet they are happy. They fear that person yet that person takes care of them. What ever he/she says they do yet they can continue to live. This means that they than become programmed like telling a dog to sit and it does. The war in Iraq is a mess now cause thats all the people there knew how to do. Saddam Hussin would lead them and they would follow. The gov't is another enforcer on conformity. They make rules that you have to follow. If you don't agree, guess what it dosn't matter. If you break them you are acting like rebiouls people and conforming with them. If you follow them you act with most of society and confrom with them. At school if you do what a teacher, principle, coach, or even another student who is popular you conform. Rules and punishments scare people and those who don't get scared confrom to try to take on society. When they do that they upset people and they become outcasts who are picked on over and over agian and tryed to make so they fall back into society. At Roosevelt and all growing up i wasn't able to conform with they all popular in crowd. My mom wasn't rich and i didn't have all the nice things i do now. I had my own group of friends thought and we stuck together growing up and would help each other. Everybody is weak if you can get them one agaisnt more. You can break somebody down mental so fast its quite sad. You can make them do something to give you power if you are in a group, but if you have a group against a group it can be quite diffrent. You have people around you saying your just like us and you don't want to be like them. Then you feel normal and right and pick on that group back. When I came to Brandon I realized there is a lot less of that going on. For the most part there is 3 groups here i have noticed. The band kids, the jocks, and then everybody else. I remeber when i first arrived some people were telling me who to talk to and who not to talk to. Whats cool and what isn't cool. I really didn't care because this was a new school and only a few kids knew me. From what the kids that did know me knew i was fun to hang with and im a good friend if you get my trust. Thats all i thought i needed. Then i get here and more and more people started talking to me and then i found out it clashed with the groups. I guess i didn't care and i still really don't. People are people because they made people. Everybody does something diffrent and if we look we are all diffrent in at least one way. We sometimes try to hide that diffrense and conform. All in all socity will never change no matter who tries. Its like the song "High School Never Ends"

I personally think that a better question would be who hasn't been programmed to think a certain way. While young we are taught to learn and do everything we do a certain way. All throughout the day we learn what is "right and wrong", maybe not always spelled out but definitely hinted at. When we are younger we learn manners, how to eat, how to walk, and how to act from our parents. We are scolded for our wrongings and praised for our success. From parent to parent what is wrong and right can differ. We then learn at a young age how to learn and what to learn at school. At a young age we are taught how to speak, the way you should write, the way you should act even more. As you get older things aren't "spelled out" as much for us but we are still taught what is wrong and right and programmed to believe certain ways. We start to see at school what to wear and if you go against that how you will be made fun of. You also learn how to interact with others and what to believe. If you go against others than you are subject to be mocked or made fun of. You start to love things because everyone else is doing it, just the same as you start to hate things because you don't want to be the only one to not hate that certain thing or person. So at an older age you are mocked by your peers. Even post schooing you are programmed what to believe. The government and educated people throw many statistics out that you must believe are right otherwise your wrong... and if you don't believe it than well your simply not american or you don't care about the well being of america! Celebrities can say something and we believe it because of the simple fact that the are famous...so why not believe it? So who might you ask is programming who? Well we are all programming each other to believe in the "status quo". That is why i think a better question is who hasn't been programmed.
The enforcers of conformity are the people who conform? Who conforms you might ask well we all conform no matter what you do. We all want to go to the status quo and be like everyone else. Even the people who want change in something have to conform in ways because if they don't conform than will anyone take them seriously? We see this in politics commonly the canidate doesnt necessarily go with what he believes but conforms to the idea that will get him the most votes because taht is what we all conform to, and the thing that we want to hear. We as humans conform in everything we do, from clothing to speaking to believeing. If i break the status quo and wear something completely against it will anyone take me seriously? So the real question is it possible to not conform? Even the "so called" non conformists conform to non conformity. So is it really possible to not conform? I personally believe its not because no matter what we do or say we are conforming to something. Is it necessarily a bad thing that we conform? In ways it can be bad...like for instance when we label people or we don't take people seriously or mock them because they are "different". Or if we never have someone/something "different" do we ever learn from anything or do we all have the same ideas the same everything and everything is the same. Who enforces conformity? I believe we all do in a way, some more than others. I myself have had a bad first impression of others just because of what they wear... does that make them a horrible person? I dont think we all mean to conform its just natural because is there a way to not conform?

I think certain kids in school are the conformists. When you are at a party the cool thing to be doing is drinking or doing drugs and the ones who arent doing that are getting made fun of because they arent conforming with everyone else. Another thing in school is what kids are wearing. There are some kids who try way to hard to dress different, to be a nonconformist, but then there are the kids that wear the exact outfit off a manequin in Hollister. At a social event like a dance conformists are the ones dancing and having fun and the nonconformists are either sitting on the side in a chair or being extremely loud and crazy to get attention. At a basketball game the conformists are the jocks who are cheering loud in the stands or are out on the field or court playing. At work your boss is the conformer telling you what you have to wear and what time you need to be at work and what your job is. Yes, it is possible to be a nonconformist, but you have to realize that you will get made fun of, criticized on what you are nonconforming about. I think for the most part I conform with the people that I surround myself with. Sometimes I will do things that everyone else isnt doing just to take a chance.

2)I think in a sense were all programmed. We're programmed as kids to think and act a certain way. We learn at a young age what behaviors are accepted and what behaviors aren't accepted. I think parents are a main influence in that and your surroundings growing up.
3) Enforcers of conformity can really be anyone. In our school its our principals, teachers, other students.. anybody. Anyone around you can be a enforcer of conformity. I think it could be possible to be a nonconformist but you'd probably be considered crazy by everyone else because we don't really accept behavior that's different from the "normal", accepted behavior of society I guess. I think it would be extremely hard to be a nonconformist, it's not easy to do something that no one else in the entire world has ever done before or even something thats never been done before by the people around you. We're all just used to conforming whether we realize we are or not. We're all conforming right now by just blogging. I think most people just conform because its much easier than not conforming. I guess I dont really know how you couldn't conform. For example if you wear name brand clothing you're conforming but if you don't wear name brand clothes and you were to like make your own clothes or something like that wouldn't you be conforming because other people make and wear their own clothes too? In that case wouldn't everyone be conforming entirely, you couldn't conform just slightly could you? I think people conform intentionally by wanting to be like others and I think you can conform unintentionally by just doing something without thinking about it because its what you would normally do, like doing your homework.

2) I do believe everyone is directed towards a direction everyone thinks is right. If you where to look down that halls you would see most people dressed in "normal" clothes at in a t-shirt and jeans. Anyone who is dressed differently as in pure black with chains and large amounts of make up, are made fun of or seperated from most people and stand out. Even if peolpe dress the same as other people dress the same as everyone else, if they dont act a certain way you end up in a certain catagory. Even how well you look can make a difference how your treated. Most people dont like to stand out to much and would rather just go along with the flow and act the way we're saposed to. I feel like i have been programmed or brought up by my parents to act a certain way. And if I wasnt goin to act the way they wanted me to I would get in trouble. I feel that most people are pushed to do what other people think or to go along with what everone else does. And if you go against the normal you are targeted by everyone else and mocked.
3)I believe the biggest conformers in our school is our peers. Our group of friends can play a big part and what we do and how we act. If you looked a certain way your expected to act that way or be comebody you mite not be. The people in charge can set regulations but that can only go so far. For most part anyone can wear whatever they want so long as it is fallows the regulations set by adults on a boared. We are aloud the have our hair however we want to in a regular day. But when it comes to picture day, we all better dress and look a certain way or we're not aloud to take a picture. Like for the seniors if they want to take a funny picture for there I.D., we cant do it. In the instence we're not allowed to act the way we want to and express what we want to. At games we're exprected to act and certain way and should fallow the rules. Most of the rules are set to protect and keep things fare. But some rules like for track they you can only have one logal showing and it can only be like a 2 inch square. Rules like that are getting to controling. A place where I believe that you should act the way you expected is at work. You search out and apply knowing how you should act. Most jobs also require uniforms to keep people the same. Certain uniforms tell us how high there ranked on the employment. Much like the military uses to show who is in charge. I do conform for the most part becuase thats how to get farther in life in the path I have chosen.
Right, Andrew T. Who hasn't been programmed/conditioned/brainwashed?
Nice cultural analysis about the t-shirts, T.J. P.
I think I have been programmed. By society, and a little bit of self programming. I used to be actively involved in band, theater, art/art club and choir, I worked at a funeral home. I would've been a canidate to work at Hot Topic, but as I've gone through high school, especially since the end of sophomore year I evolved from that, into more of the mainstream. I was academically at a higher place than I am now. I used to read for fun. I changed a little bit when I moved here, but I changed my style more drastically when I started dating Joey. He wasn't a fan of my bright blue fishnets, pink fuzzy hat, and lime green shorts.
I was also programmed in the army, basic training is basically changing the way you think and view killing people. You're trained not to think of someone's life, but the fact that even though they look innocent they could be suicide bombers, or out to shoot you. When in doubt, you kill first and think later.
The enforcers of conformity are drill sergeants and peers and history, self doubt, knowledge. They all have cattle prods and consequences and they have ways to make you conform. (come to the dark side, we have cookies, money, we'll kill your family if you don't, we'lll redicule you if you don't, we'll talk about how you're weird, we'll isolate you, we'll pick you last in gym class, we'll stare blankly, we'll try not to be associated with you, we'll call you a teacher's pet, we won't pay you the same amount if you don't look like we want you to, we are cannibalisitc and we'll eat you to get to the top because you look weak, we'll tell your boyfriend that they're dating a loser, we'll key your car, principal's office, article 15, castrate you, cut off your fingers or just show you a video of it because it makes you uncomfortable, courts marshall, scratch fingernails on a chalkboard, pinch the back of your arms, , we'll make you question the foundation of your morals) We'll find any way to get to you until you do what we say in the way we say to do it and you'll get a warm cupcake when you make it to heaven, because you finally did what we requested ever so gently. Like we reward puppies for not eating and pooping all over the furniture. We all come with our own way of punishing people for not being like us, even if it's subconscious. We make other people feel uncomfortable because of their differences even if we know they can't help it. We stare at someone who is a paraplegic or islamic. We make them self conscious and we hope to god that no one is staring at us for all of the wrong reasons. And we question are own judgement, we talk ourselves into something we don't believe, we sever who we want to be out of existance to be who we "should" be. And because of our own self pity, to make ourselves feel better we make sure everyone else does the same thing.

(3) The enforcers of conformity is everyone. Even if you don't conform you are still conforming to the other nonconformists, therefore you are, in turn, still conforming. At work you conform to a dress code, store poicy, and to what your boss says. Games are all about rules, if you learn to conform to the rules than you can learn to play the game, if you choose not to conform than you are considered to be cheating (nobody wants to play with a cheater).
(2) I am Nurse Ratched. I believe that McMurphy is trying to ruin the system that I have developed on my ward, and that he needs to follow suit of the other patients to conform to the ward rules so he can learn to cornform the same way in the society outside the institution. His rants about wanting the TV at a different time and wanting ciggarettes not rationed have become annoying and more difficult to deal with. He really pushes me to my limit, making it extremely hard for me to think of reasons as to why he can not have his way, but I do manage. McMurphy may win some of the battles, but he will not win the war. I have the ability to decide when he is to be released and at this rate he will be in here until pigs can fly. The mental hospital is my life. Because it is my life my home life is uneventful. My house has a white picket fence, but no husband or kids to call my own.
Mik's right: cliques affect us enormously. We need a feeling of belonging to be fully happy and productive. Cliques are necessary this way. We categorize ourselves. These poor men on the ward were unable to categorize themselves into socially accepted cliques. Nurse Ratched might have had the same problem, so she takes out her frustration on the men.
a response to karn:
you believe that the only reason that i belive in god is becuase i cant handle it by myself????????
let me tell you that the only way that i have made it throught my life is with the help of God. i would seriously like to see you try to get throught half the stuff i or even some other people have gotten throught without God by your side. good luck buddy. i would like to see you in 10 years and see how your doing with that.
Leah, I'm slightly confused. It seems that your statement completely contridicted yourself.
It seems like cliques are way worse at BVHS than at any other school. At least that's what I've heard. The class of 2009 doesn't look at itself like a group of friends, more like "Hey, you're graduating the same year as me." It's weird to think we've pretty much all been together for 12 years.

(2)I believe that you are not programmed to be what you are. Everyperson has their own thoughts and ideas that they come up with. When it comes to sports everyone choses if they like it or not, like I tried skiiing but I do not like it at all. I started snowboarding at the age of five just because I wanted to try it. Not because I was programmed to be a snowboarder. We are not robots in that they do not decide what they do when we can. What you believe is totally your choice. You were not born a believer in God, you have to accept him into your ife. If we are programmed what to believe, than how can we say we believe in what we have no choice.
(3)The people who are the enforcers of conformity in school are Dr. Talcott, Mr. Thorson, teachers, resource officers. But wait, why point fingers. Examine yourself in how you treat others for what they wear or for that matter if they do anything different then you. We tend to make fun of anyone who is not like us, forcing them to change or they can not worry what we say. At sporting events the referees are the ones who enforce conformity because they make sure no one behaves bad. If a player would go against a rule, they would call a foul on them forcing them to conform or get more fouls called against them. Your boss or someone put in charge of you is the enforcer. They lay down rules and regulations that you have to follow. If you do not you could possibly be fired and thus making sure you do follow the rules. Think you can change something just because you feel like it so you can make it interesting. Almost always you can't so you just have to go with the flow. Essentially I believe it is impossible to not conform because someone else is doing the samething you are. The only thing that matters is what the people are doing around you deciding if you are conforming to them or not. If you do conform you only do slightly because everyone one has different things they like to do. Just because you do one thing the same does not mean your whole life is the same as someone elses. It is intentionally to conform because you are just going through your day/life without even thinking that what you are doing is the same as everyone elses. But there are those who most likely decide to conform just for the sake that they do not get picked on.
my mom things cheerleading is for ditzy girls too. i think differently it is because i have been around dance my entire life. no matter what people say dance is an athletic. (i will agree that it is not a sport if you agree that it is athletic and an art form) i belive that you should get your daughter into dance and/or cheerleading Mr. C. it is very fun thats why i keep going!
to answer karn's about the God subject...
honestly I think that is your opinion, which is fine, but shouldn't be preached to others. Let people believe what they want to..it is in face an opinion, which means it is neither right nor wrong. I believe that going to church and believing in God has nothing to do with conformity. And so what if it does! Nothing horrible can come from it. Its not like conforming to taking drugs. And if it happens to help someone in return, even better! Why do you think so many people believe in God and the Bible? It has helped so many. People go through so many things that a little help is refreshing, and can save a life. God has been an influence in so many great leaders and groups of helping out society its unbelievable. So what if its an excuse for things you can't handle. If you read the Bible, that is what God is for.. an escape. I don't believe its for people who can't "handle" things, thats nonsense. Everyone needs a confidant. You can't tell me that you don't have a friend or person you can tell everthing to. Again, thats what God is for, to help solve our problems or to put them on someone else without actually putting them on someone. I'm not trying to preach, just defend something that I believe in, which I think you would do also.

lori how am i contridicting myself? when i am saying that i CAN NOT get throught it with out the help of God? im saying that Karn could not handle what a lot of people have done without God by his side.
Way to remain studious and civilized, ladies. Well done.

Sports has always been in my life and i feel that they has just been forced on me and i always wonder what it is that makes someone play sports and others not. It's not that i dont enjoy them because i do find them to be fun. But if i didnt have them I think i would be okay. I feel like iv been forced into playing them and sometimes the only reason is to be with my friends. I think the whole competiiveness between the people on your own team, not the other schools, has made me to not like sports as much. So in a way i have been forced into loving something but at the same time its forcing me to hate it. I'v had so many good times in sports throughout my school career and thats where alot of my friendships have came from, but i wonder how different my life would be if i never did play or quit when i was younger. My parents seem to always be pushing me into playing these sports probably thinking that i always have loved them yet my sister does not do any sports and they have never pushed her into any. Why was i pushed into it?
Ha i would also like to add that no matter how hard you try to "not conform".. you are in face conforming. Its not like your the only one doing that. So good luck on not conforming..by actually conforming.

2 I believe that everybody is programmed to some extent by something in their life. If a child was raised in a poor neighborhood, they might feel this is what life is like for everybody. They don't understand that there is more out there and that you can make it on your own by working. I believe that I have been programmed too. I have been programmed most by my parents, especially when I was younger. I was programmed to believe that stealing and swearing were things you didn't do. I also grew up in a conservative household so I was programmed to agree with Republicans, not Democrats. Although I would like to say that my conservative roots are of my choice, I'm sure my parents had something to do with the way I turned out. More recently, I believe I am being programmed every day by society to act a certain way. Society also programs our activities too. We are constantly being bombarded by advertisements telling us how to fit in. We are told that to be normal and cool we must have the latest fashions in clothing and electronics.
1 My name is Nurse Ratched. I love power and I love being in a position to control the patients. I also love making the patients feel small and insignificant. There is a new man who arrived named McMurphy. I suspect I will have a hard time keeping him under control. He is constantly rebelling and he rallies all of the patients together. I am afraid that he is getting too much power. What especially ticks me off is that I cannot make him mad. This means I don't have control over him. I don't understand how he appeared satisfied after I turned off the World Series. I am losing control over this patient and I must do something about it. My home is simply a back storage room behind my office. Every night I have to plug myself into the outlet and power up for the next day. I get really low on power after a long day of making fun of the patients and degrading them. I don't have any life outside of the institution. One reason is that I have never left. Another is that while I am plugged in and powering up, I resemble a vegetable.

2. I think society has been programmed to think, believe, hate, and love certain things. There are many pressures and such around in our society telling us what we should look like, what is right to believe and what is wrong to believe. We all have people in our lives programming us to believe and do what they think is right. Our parents, friends, organizations, media all try to get us to live up to expectations and try to program you to be just like they want us to be. People can say they aren't programmed and they have their own beliefs, but in the end, everyone has been influenced by someone else.
3. I don't think there is just one group of enforcers of conformity at our school. The teachers and administration enforce conformity; the bell rings and everyone needs to be in their desk and ready. We have dress codes, how we can speak and when. School has also made me conform to think that if you don't go to college, you won't have a future. When I sit and think about this logically, just because someone doesn't go to college, doesn't mean they won't have a good future. But all throughout school, k-12 they have taught that after high school, if you want any future at all, you will go to college. When the counselors talk to us about graduation its to the point they just assume that everyone is going to college. Probably the number one question we (seniors) will be asked this year is "so where are you going to college?" that is just they way society has made everyone think. That everyone will conform and go to college. Also, the media influences conformity on our high school students. The media tells you what to wear, what your hair should look like, how much you should weigh... I'm sure a lot of people claim that they haven't conformed, but it's impossible not to conform. How many girls can say they haven't dyed their hair to fit in, or bought hollister jeans because everyone else was wearing them? I'm sure not many can honestly say they haven't. Where I work, everyone is forced to conform. We all wear the same uniform, wear our hair the same, and even say the exact same thing to customers.
Conformity is impossible to avoid. If you try to be a nonconformist you just conform to the nonconformist. It is a never ending circle.
Period 7
(1) (The alarm rings) Excellent, another day of helping the world. (After having eaten eggs and toast and now sipping tea) Wow that new sleepnumber matress really must work; I feel more energized than usual. (As Nurse Ratched is locking her front door you get a good view of her house and yard. The house is white with a indoor front porch area; just like every single house on the street. The yard itself looks like it gets mowed at least once a day and there is a bird bath, near the flower garden, to the right of the door.) The nurse is now walking down the stairs to the gate at the front of her property. (Nurse Ratched's neighbor Emma) "Another beautiful spring day isn't it Miss Ratched?" (Nurse Ratched, Automatically) "O yes, quite a nice day out." The drive to institute was as bumpy as ever. "Why can't those damned road crews guys do something useful and fix this road; instead of spending all of my money on new sidewalks!" (On her entrance into the ward she puts on the usual blank face and systematically responds to all the "Hello Miss Ratched"s and the "Have a good day Miss Ratched"s. (Nurse Ratched) "Patient Ellis is already crucified against the wall so Darrell must have wanted to get out here early." (Nurse Debra) "O, well yes, he said that he had a sick kid and had to go take care of him. So I told him that once he finished with Ellis he could go." (About five hours have passed since the daily routine began. McMurphy has just told everyone that he thinks the food needs to have its quality upgraded). (Inside Nurse Ratched's head) Who the hell does this McMurphy fool think he is? Calm down. Breathe in, breathe out. He won't be here for much longer. As soon as his evaluation papers arrive, he's out of here.
Cool, Tom. Really cool.

(2) I believe that everyone is conformed to something in someway or another. I think this because there are so many different groups of people, but conforms to their certain clique. Whether you think you are programmed or not you are in someway because the way you conform to your clique is you think the same and dress the same and act the same as everybody in your group. You are programmed by who you hang out with and I also believe you are partically programmed by where you grow up at.
(3) The enforcers of conformity at our school is the staff, but mainly Talcott. I think this because they tell you what you can say, do, and even wear. At social events it is the people in charge of the event and who is all there. At work the enforcer of conformity is your boss because, they also tell you what you can do, say, and wear. I believe that everyone conforms to one thing or another entirely, maybe not intentionally but it happens to everyone whether they want it to or not. There is no preventing conformity no matter how much you try it just happens.
Well done, Brianna! Even though you were ill!? Impressive--and collegiate.

I am responding to what Karn had to say about conforming to believe in God.
First off, I would like to say that I respect you, Karn, as a person. We don’t get anywhere if we try and stab or shove in each others face that they are wrong. We are not all that different if you think about it. We are all human and are on earth. We both have struggles in our lives and we both go to the same high school. But we go separate ways when it comes to believing in God. With this issue I don’t see how conformity could be brought into dealing with your salvation with the Lord Jesus Christ. This is no laughing matter, the reality is whether you go to hell or heaven when you die (as I believe, I don’t know what your beliefs are when we die). I don’t see how it could be called conformity if someone doesn’t want to go to the most horrible place EVER. I emphasis ever because we can not imagine what it is like and nor do I EVER want to experience it (Hell). Also, when dealing with the Bible I believe and know that there is no possible way that it is just a book. Just think about all the different books that were wrote and how many are just gone or destroyed. They are destroyed and never seen again because people do not like what they have to say. Well, the Bible was written many, many years ago and many people do not like it and many people despise it. Then how is it still here? The Bible, the Word of God, has to be more than just “a book” or else it would be destroyed and no one would know about it. So to conclude I am not trying to preach but just tell everyone why I believe in Jesus Christ to be my Lord and Savior of my life and for everyone else who believes.
