You all remember the short story by Kurt Vonnegut entitled "Harrison Bergeron"? Do advertisements "handicap" our thinking? I think they do, if we are following a show closely or if we are driving carefully or if we are focusing on __________, then have our focus interrupted by the ubiquitous ads.

(This ad depicts two young people who, because they use VO5 hair products, are able to find the courage to rebel against Communist China. Seen it on television? The line between movie and advertisement has become a blurry one. Movies have ads in them. Advertisements try to be as much like movies as they can be. Is it good that advertisers attach such major concepts like individuality to their products? Can doing so ever be harmful?)

This clip is interesting because it gives opinions of experts who have studied advertising. I like how they talk about advertising in TV shows and movies. Sometimes we don’t even realize that this is advertising. They talk about a clip from Seinfeld that uses Jr. Mints and Snickers in it. I think that it is interesting that this clip is not considered product integration because this show is older. They talk a lot about a show called 30 Rock. This show the product integration is more noticeable because they use really oblivious things to advertise like Version Wireless. I also find it unusual to think how much money is being spent on product integration. By just having the name of your product in a movie must cost that maker thousands of dollars. I don’t think advertising is intrusive because they are just trying to make money. When advertisers use characters from TV shows to make people stop and look I think it is cleaver and a good technique. Advertising needs to happen or no one would buy that specific product. By advertising being in all books and TV shows it doesn’t have a big effect on us because we are so adjusted to seeing all the advertisements. The ad above is a very effective one. I think that by adding individuality to the products the buyers can relate to the product making it personal and easy to buy.

This clip is very interesting; it is something that even further opens my eye to the things that companies do to get their products sold. Some good points that it makes is that a lot of companies use television shows to subtly advertise in a way that most viewers don’t even realize that they are being advertised to. The advertising that we are being subjected to is intrusive, we have no choice, and we get advertised to whether we want to see them or not. Advertisements are everywhere we can not avoid them, they are in our television shows, movies, magazines, and everything around us. We are not allowed to think for ourselves to a certain extent, we are constantly unhappy with what we have because the media tells us we need something new and different. As a society we are never simply happy with what we have or are given, we have to get new things and we ditch our old things, there is no advertisement that tells us to be happy with what we are given and to live life simply. We see images of new and better clothing, toys, cars, perfume, etc. young children are taught from an early age to want new toys all the time, they never truly learn to be happy with what their parents provide for them. The whole industry is indeed corrupt; they make people unhappy and depressed all the time, if we are not perfect and we do not have the latest “in” items we are not accepted by our peers. This is what the media teaches us, and it is not right for them to do so.

This audio clip is not interesting what so ever. I don’t care to think about the ads that are shoved in my face when I turn on my idiot box. I usually don’t even pay much attention to the show. The points in the clip are valid and could possibly be interesting. But, the tone of the clip is so flat that it didn’t hold my attention. It was a chore to get through it and pay attention. I really don’t care if television is flooded with advertisements as long as the shows remain interesting. Advertisements are unavoidable. Nothing is free, if you want numerous programs besides public broadcasting and there telethons you should just stop complaining and deal with it. If you have a Tivo then you have paid for the right to skip ads. When you get tricked into a clever ad that looks like a show have a chuckle and move on, the advertisers earned your attention. For me I don’t care if I am being influenced subconsciously because I don’t realize it nor do I want to. I feel I am not as easily swayed as some but I have been affected. Other dim individuals might be for sale more easily. Everything in our modern world is for sale. From tampons to Senate seats the line has been crossed and left on the horizon. Call me ignorant for thinking so but just leave me alone in my fog. I am a victim of the combine and nothing can be done to change it not even awareness of the topic.

I agree with chad on this one. I found it very difficult to pay attention to this. Like chad said that voice is monotone and just not intreging to me. I just couldnt follow along with them. I think advertising goes alot further when there are pictures involved or a video involved. When a person can see what they are listening to i think the product sells alot better and faster. In this on the air media, sometimes it sounds like there are actual commercials running on the air, but it still doesnt attract people because they can't see what they are advertising. Its true having a celebrity in a commericial or add, instantly people are attracted to the ad. I think people just get the feeling that if they use the product the celebrity is advertising then they will be just like them. I think peoples self-esteem can be extremely affected by advertising. In every ad the celebrity or advertiser is completely photoshoped to make the advertiser look the best they can. I am writing my paper on a Britney Spears advertsing her believe perfume. You can tell just by looking at the ad that she has been stretched to make her stomache look perfect. She has no shirt on, just something covering her chest. She has had children already but yet her stomach looks perfect, this can't be. Advertising can for sure put people down and make them feel less of themselves.

This podcast was one of the more boring podcasts I have ever listened to. I personally don't find it that interesting. I think it is really stupid how television makers try to advertise as much as they can. Not only is it stupid but it is extremely annoying. I sort of compare it to video games and the advertising in them that have steadily gotten more obvious and in-your-face over the past years. For instance, you could be playing a racing game that has fictional cars in a fictional city and be driving around and see a HUGE bilboard for Dodge vehicles. I know that it generates a lot of money for developers and publishers, but it doesnt bring the price of games down. If they put ads like that in there and the prices of new games went down from $60 to $40 or even $50 i would have absolutly no problem with it.

It was very boring as Dohrman said, but i think that ads in movies and tv shows is that bad unless the program makes it the main point of the scene. If they happen to be driving a ford thats ok unless all the cars in the movie happen to be ford then its annoying. Over all i think that ads shouldnt be allowed to be every where like on your food, drinks, walls, road, and every where.
Period 5
I find this clip very interesting. First off I think it would be awesome if my job was to go out and watch tv and movies to try and find any advertisements in them. When I am watching tv i rarely pay attention to what the characters are eating, drinking, or using. I just don't see what the big deal is if they want to pay money for them to supposedly get their products name recognized, then let them. I have never had and probably never will have a show or movie ruined for me by having too much advertising in it. I thought it was a dumb idea when she said that some sitcoms and tv series use fake products in their shows. Why would you not except money from pepsi to have one of your characters drink a pepsi during a show. It's basically free money and it does nothing to hurt your show. I am not a frequent viewer of the Stephen Colbert show but I think it's hilarious that he recieves money from Doritos to make fun of their products. Why would you pay someone money to have them say funny but bad things about your product, this makes no sense to me. She asks us, Would people care if they knew the characters were getting paid to drink a coke? I wouldn't. The bottom line is advertising in my mind is just a waste of a lot of money and they should stick to advertising on billboards and signs.
Period 3
I thought that this podcast was very boring yet the parts that I was actually paying attention to and listening too were actually pretty interesting. I myself am the kind of person who rarely watches the commericials on tv when I am watching a sports game or a tv show and it goes to a commercial I always change the channel to another game or another show, I would much rather watch a show that was boring rather than watch advertisements unless it was the Super bowl because those ads are all new and much more entertaing than ads that are run over and over again on tv. The podcasts makes good points that companies are willing to do whatever it takes to get their product out there and advertised well. They make commercials with characters from the tv shows in the ads so that people who are "Tivo"-ing the shows will stop the fast forwarding because they think that the show they are watching has started but it is just another commercial. Advertising becomes intrusive when it is part of everything we see and it is almost to that poin right now if we haven't gotten to that point already. WE cant decide what we want for ourselves because we are constitently being told what everyone else is buying and using so then we feel like we need those things to fit in to society as well. The media has loads of mind conrol over us more than probably we even realize. THe whole industry is definitely on its way to being corrupt by pressuring the righters to put there products into their shows and movies. We are obsessed about celebrities because we want to have the luxuries that they have in their life so we feel like if we use products that they endorse we will be atleast the slightest way like them. The self-esteems of people are effected in some ways but they are only effected to the piont of were they let it stop effecting them, the person has control over how much they let advertising affect them.
P. 3
As I started listening to this audio clip I was thinking, wow this is lame and do I really have to listen to it for another nine minutes. The first couple of minutes I was lost and did not understand what some of the stuff they were saying even meant. Then when they started talking about 30 Rock my interest elevated. Though I do not watch 30 Rock, nor have I really seen an episode, I knew that it stared Tina Fey. When they started talking about SOYJOY bars and its product placement I could only think of other major product placements. "Cast Away," even though it is not a TV show, is a great example of product placement. The two major companies used were FedEx and Wilson. The using of a Wilson volleyball as basically a supporting actor. What else could Wilson (Co.) ask for? You would probably lose count of the number of times the Wilson name is said in Cast Away if you tried to keep track.
Another thing that caught my attention was the fact that Doritos pays Stephen Colbert to make fun of their product. I believe this is ingenious, because even though their product may get slammed, at least people are hearing the name and therefore are more tempted to look at a bag of Doritos to see if what Stephen Colbert says about them is actually true. It is brilliant advertising! We may not think something so simple could affect us, but consciously or subconsciously it does.

We are surrounded by advertisements. Lets face it there everywhere. People dont want to always just see commercials, they want to watch their shows. It seems as though everything is brought to you by... Theyll always say the brand name before the commercial. Advertisers will do anything to get there product in a show and will pay millions to do so. Like they said in the media clip that they will even make it so obvious to make there product be heard or seen. I think the Tina Fey joke was really funny, and they do have a good point. There are many cultural references trying to reach out to the consumers and the age group they the advertisers are trying to reach out to them. Honestly i think all the advertisments can get pretty annoying. People dont realize i dont think what an impact advertisements have on them, and they dont notice how these advertisments will stay in their heads, and they will maybe even end up getting some of the products that are being presented to them. They will change anything just to get the point across to the consumers. People dont realize how much companies will pay famous people/ tv shows just to get their product in just to be noticed for even a second. But unfortuanatley sales will go up by this because people will see it on tv and audimatically want to have it.
My first impression of this audio clip was booooorrrrriiiinnnngggg! The people who are talking are monotone and it's like listening to Charlie Brown's teacher. BUT, it made a few good points on advertisements. Reality tv helps advertise products. Famous people help advertise products. Anything on tv or radio is advertised. Even when advertising for one item, another item is then advertised without thought. I think we think we are thinking for ourselves, but we are really thinking for the company that is putting out these ads that is being pried into our brains so it's so in there, that it is natural to think about, so you are thinking for yourself without your own knowledge. I hope that made sense. After reading the question "Why do we obsess over the lives of celebrities?", my first answer was: I have no idea. I mean, they are people just the same as us, they just have more money and are able to do more things in a day (it seems) than the rest of us. People, US, National Enquirer, and other magazines like these just advertise the celebrities in general (good or bad). I have a question for your question Mr. C: Why do people enjoy reading the negatives about celebrities lives more than the positives? I mean I'de rather read a juicy story on how Brad dumped Angelina than how Natalie Portman is saving kids in third world countries. It's as though celebrities are some sort of God to people (even though they are people themselves).
P.3
I thought the pod cast was not interesting. It was really hard to pay attention to it, because I am so used to seeing a video with the talking. I believe advertisements can hurt people's self esteem because they give false hopes. Just because you buy a certain product doesn't mean it will change your way of life, or the way people view your life. I think over the years we have relied so much on the media and celebrities’ telling us what is right or cool that we stopped thinking for ourselves. We have been weakened by the media to a point where when you walk into a store and see a product you can almost always think of an ad or commercial for the product. It's like advertisers force ads into our minds without us even realizing it and we are automatically affected for life by it. It's hard to decide for ourselves anymore because we are used to the media deciding for us. Advertisers may be one of the most powerful groups in the world. They know how to grab everyone’s attention and embed a product into our mind. They are brilliant enough to weaken us to a point where they have complete control of what we buy. They know what they need to use to affect us so we buy their product. I think that advertising has hit the point of being intrusive and there is no going back, it can only get worse.

Wow. This audio clip is extremely boring and painful to listen to. It's just people complaining about things that not very many others would even complain about. These people need lives. If you don't want to listen to the commercial, then flip the fricking channel! Nobody is forcing you to listening to the things that your complaining about. I don't like soap operas...so I don't watch them! So dont watch the commercial that you are whining about. These people are going way to in depth about simple TV ads. An ad wants you to by there product and that's it. They don't care about making you happy or making you laugh. These people are wasting there time and need to find something else to do other than waste their own time and my time. By the way, TV is not an artform in my mind. People don't watch TV and the commercials just so they can sit and analyze them and share how beautiful it is. They watch them to relax and be comfortable. It doesn't surprise me that this is from New York City. People that are this caught up in pop culture are exactly oppostite of what they're trying to be. They're trying to fit in and love everything but they're just whining about it like they think they can change it, even though nobody cares about what they have to say.
pd.1
I honestly hope they take commercials out and start putting the advertisements into shows. I would much rather see a certain kind of soda a character is drinking then wait for commercials, plus I really do not even notice what kind of soda a character drinks so it doesn't even bother me. But if it is a ad like in the movie "Talladega Nights" where they have an actual commercial in the middle of the movie, now that would really suck if they did that in all movies. So as long as they don't do that i would be just fine with it.
People are obsessed with the lives of celebrities because they do cool stuff in movies, most likely good looking or really muscular, and most of them have a fairy tale life that most of us wish we had. I think if people are affected by ads they should try and make themselves like the ad shown by actually doing something about it, or if you can't just ignore the ad. I think it is good that advertisers attach major concepts like individuality because it shows what there personalities are like and who they stand for.
Period 1
Is this clip interesting yes, but i find some of it pointless. It's cool though because it's experts who have studied advertising and giving their interesting views on advertising. TV is starting to not be such a ad paradise because there is a new invention called TIVO and u can fast forward through commercials. It really doesnt bother me in movies. I watched Hancock and didnt notice anything. I have seen ads in video games, for example Need For Speed had Best Buy on billboards when u drive by them. Ads really dont affect me, i dont really care for them at all. I know though the Coke commercials with the polar bears really makes me want to have a glass bottled Coke (best pop in the world.) It's also a tradition in our family on x-mas eve at my grandmas, she always has those coke bottles. As you can tell how i act and such that i dont care for celebrities, like at all. I don't throw myself out there to become popular. Im just my self. I could careless about things like that. Im sure that alot of people are really influence and can hurt there self esteems. Especially clothes ads because their models are so hot and muscular. And people want to be like that and not their selves. I think ads are really effective on some people. But i dont know how it could so much. I really dont like advertising at all kind of pisses me off lol. I decide what i want on what i like. I can decide for my self not by a commercial telling me its the best. I can decide my self. Ads are worthless to me, but its fun to learn about on how it affects people and how ridiculous some ads are. Its been a fun 3 weeks.
Period 7
Some channels are really crowded with commercials, so they could integrate more products into the show itself. I think it would be kind of annoying to see Coca Cola or Snapple everywhere in the show, though. Keep it limited. It's really not that bad to have small segments of commercials in the show itself. With a lot of these shows that they're using as examples, I have no idea what they're talking about so it is a little hard to follow along with. They are talking about tivo a lot, and I don't really know that many South Dakotans with tivo, we just switch the channel and we may come back later, or we may not. Who knows? The people in this podcast do have a point about some of the shows. You can’t just have a product everywhere you look in the show. It has to be limited or else it will draw attention away from the show that is broadcasting it in the first place. These people are just being dramatic, I don’t think the shows will let that happen. The shows need their own message to get across, and if consumers/watchers are distracted during this show by products, it doesn’t work very well.
period 3
Mr. C the guys in the clip were so boring! I found it hard to keep listening so hopefully I cover everything well!
Ads become intrusive often; going too far for me is when ads make uncomfortable sexual references to everything! It isn’t fun watching a children’s Christmas movie with my family and a simple product like toothpaste airs a commercial that shows people almost fully naked and borderline having sex all for the simple reason that they have fresh breath. The things kids are seeing today on TV ads could almost be considered pron. So where will be when we have kids? Will our kids see actual porn on TV and it will become a natural thing? I definitely do not want that to happen to my children!
I think that we are bombarded with advertisements in everything we do and ads are everywhere we go. I can’t even go into a restroom stall without someone trying to sell me something! But, I do believe that when people bombard us with ads they don’t realize that a lot of the time it annoys us so when we think about that brand we think, “geez those people are annoying do they ever shut up!?” I also think that we may form an opinion on how we feel about a product but if ne person tells us not to waste our money we quickly change our opinion on the product. Word of mouth is the deciding factor of whether or not I buy the product or not.
I don’t believe that the whole industry is corrupt I just think they are everyday people who are doing their jobs even if it is getting us to buy things we may not need. If people sold us only the things we needed then there would be a lot of people without jobs and life would be boring if we didn’t buy some things that we only think we need.
We obsess our lives with the lives of celebrities because they seem to live glamorous lives. They have people waiting on them hand and foot; they can spend without having to worry about where their bank account is at, they have everything. What we don’t see though is what goes on behind the scenes. My guess is that a majority of celebrities now days live glamorous lives on camera then off camera their lives are nothing but stress and heartache. We feel the need to live like we are the only ones that matter in the world.
Advertisements affect self-esteem in every single way. How many ads do you where there is a plus size guy/girl that is glamorous and living the perfect life? I cannot think of any. All ads now days have skinny women with flawless skin and long gorgeous hair with muscular good looking men all over them. That makes overweight people, of those with a lot of acne think that they can’t find happiness unless they look perfect. It makes us think by our sexual attractions and not with our heads.
Beauty is only skin deep. It's true.
Pd 1
Wow, that audio clip was very boring and hard to pay attention to; however, most of what they said was true. I agree that advertisers may have over done it. There are advertisements everywhere, whether its label recognition on clothing, certain products used in movies, or ads in magazines. Sometimes it is hard to look past them and actually watch the movie, or enjoy the magazine, but I’m sure that if we’re intelligent enough it shouldn’t be a problem. Now that I’ve realized how major advertising is, I’m sure I will notice it way more now, but I don’t think I’ll be fooled by it as much as I used to be. All consumers need to do when they come across an advertisement is understand the underlying message and decide on from there if the product is actually a necessity. I believe that the older we get the easier it is for us to not be coerced by advertisements.
At some point advertising does become intrusive, when they attack people with low self esteem and promise them instant popularity or results which normally doesn’t happen. It basically just sets you up for disappointment. So why do we allow this? It works on many people, the advertisers get paid; it’s a continuing cycle that will go on forever until it becomes too drastic and we finally realize that we can just be happy with ourselves and only live with the necessities of life. I do not believe this is possible though. We will always be tempted to buy unnecessary products. We must decide for ourselves whether we actually need the product or not, that’s the only way we can look beyond advertisements. As for the VO5 hair product ad, I believe that individuality is impossible. Everything we do has either already be done or already been thought of. By this ad promising you individuality and happiness with being different, it wants you and everyone else to conform and buy the same brand product in order to be an individual. How can we all be individuals if we all use the same product?! However, I do like VO5 hair products, but I use them not to be an individual, but because I like them. This ad had no affect on me other than I thought it was cute to watch.
pd. 5
I think this clip is interesting because they bring up things that we usually would not notice ourselves. Producers have to find ways around commercials because they are learning that people like myself no long watch the commercials. There are a bunch of little tweaks in advertising that we do not notice. Producers try to hide their product by sponsoring these T.V. shows so they can put their product into the plot of the show and that is their way of advertising it. They also mention the fact that some producers actually use the characters from the show you are watching and put them in their commercials to make you stop your Tivo and think that you are back to watching your show. I agree with these speakers that this is a very effective and sneaky way of advertising. I think that when we see a celebrity, we just see how great their lives are so we end up just wanting the same life that they have. So having a celebrity in your commercial or advertisement will make consumers want their product to have what they have. I believe certain commercials really hit their target but they also ruin self-esteems of people and make them feel bad about themselves.
pd.1
Overall I thought this audio clip was informative and made many interesting points, but I did become bored of it. Good points about advertising in movies were interesting. I don't notice the advertising though. Ever since we started this unit, I have been noticing more. That was your philosophy in this unit huh Mr. C! I think by the end of the movie people will have forgotten the advertisements though. They were there to see a movie and afterwards they'd be discussing the success of the movie not quick references to companies. I am a visual person and would have rather seen examples of the topics in advertising that they were discussing. But seeing things isn't always the best way or the most positive way to advertise as I have learned during this unit. Much of it is negative. So many companies out there need to get their product or business out there so sometimes they'll do anything to be noticed. So, in reality isn't that what we're doing? Trying to be noticed? We see ads such as Abercrombie or provacative perfume ads and want to have what the people in the ad have because they are portrayed as flawless and godlike. Celebrities especially are this way. Advertising has it all. There's funny, sexy, outrageous, and uplifting ads out there. We are constantly bombarded with these and they can have a negative effect. When men or women are endorsing for a product and the ad is meant to be sexy or portray a sense of sensuality, then that's when it goes too far. Young girls and boys are seeing these ads and watching harmful images. Many girls do idolize celebrities and seeing their perfect physique forces them to judge their own bodies. I think in today's society things are becoming less traditional and more liberal. A big influence on this change I think is celebrities. They're all over the TV so we have no choice but to see them. I admit I do love keeping up with certain celebrities and when I see them in a commercial I pause and watch it. I can say I wouldn't go straight to the mall and buy that product or see that store, but I will remember that that star is that product's endorser. I think we obsess over them because it partly gets our mind away from the war in Iraq but also the fact that many stars WANT to be role models. Stars like Taylor Swift and Miley Cyrus know they should be good role models and kids and teens adore their talent. This talent pushes other kids and teens to be like them and from then on they are obsessed. So, I believe that not all of advertising is negative. I do enjoy watching advertising and don't usually flip the channels (partly because I don't want to miss my show when it comes back on). I think it's your choice whether you fall into it or not. Advertiser's main goal is to draw you in and you can either ignore or be sucked in by it. It's based upon your self-control. It's best to buy what you want to buy and wear what you want to wear. It should not be determined by an ad you see. I believe that the industry is getting closer and closer to being corrupt but really you have the choice to watch and listen to them or not.

I as well thought that this clip was almost too boring to concentrate on but I think I got the gist of it. I realized they talked a lot about TiVo and being able to skip the commercial and go strait to the show/movie you are watching. I think its cheap how the advertisements are looking more like movies to make you stop and look. I (not owning tivo) also find it pathetic that there are so many MORE commercials than there is of the actual show. There will be about eight to ten minutes of commercials (at least it feels like) and maybe only 5 minutes of the show.
It is unreal that commercials are needing to put disclaimers on the commercial so people know that its a commercial and not a real tv show.
People notice so many different ads in movies and its surprisingly effective. Say, the hot guy in the movie drives a certain make of car. The sales of that make will go up after that movie is shown.
Verizon does a very good job of advertising because almost everyone owns a cellphone but may not be satisfied with their service. There is where verizon comes in to help them in their decision even though all they wanted to do is go watch a movie or watch a television show.
p.5
This was by far the most boring thing I have listened to in a long time! Not only were the voices monotone a good %80 of the time it was just the dumbest information ever. However alot of the information is very true, how we pay for out television networks by watching advertisements. It would definitely be nice to have Tivo and just avoid advertisements altogether. Although television ads really don't affect me anymore, I like many other Americans are just so used to them it doesn't even matter and we don't notice them. We just want the show we're watching to come back on. I think alot of the advertising is just dumb, like how they use half naked girls to sell cologne to men. The advertisers want to make the men think that they can have a sexy girl like that in their bed in a very short amount of time if they start wearing this brand of cologne. But I feel really bad for the parents of young girls that see their daughters looking at the covers of Cosmo magazines in the check out line at WalMart, and even at a very young age the girl wants to look exactly like the girl on the cover. She wants the same clothes, the same deoderant, the same makeup. She doesn't even have time to decide for herself. I definitely think the self-esteem of people are affected from ads. For example if you are a larger person and every page you flip in a magazine is filled with very thin girls wearing nearly nothing showing off their gorgeous bodies. When in reality how many girls actually look like that? About 1 in a million.
period 3
First of all I think the audio clip is interesting, but the people talking sounded very boring. I am not a big fan of watching commercials on tv so I usually just tivo through them. Some of the points they made were very interesting like when they mentioned the people in the movie talking about soy joy because most people don't realize how much that brand of food sticks in their mind even if they are not paying attention to it. I think advertising has gone a little over the top because the people in the podcast mentioned that some advertisers wanted to stream a banner across the bottom of your screen whenever their product is being used, and I think that would just annoy people then want them to buy their product. I think it is a very clever way to get people to watch their commercial by putting the same actors as the show your watching has to trick you into watching it. I don't think we can ever think for ourselves what we want to buy if these commercials keep making these outrageous attempts to catch our attention. I don't think the whole industry is corrupt yet, but if advertisers keep this up, it might turn corrupt. We obsess over celebrities because we want to be rich and famous like them. I believe people's self esteems can really be affected by advertising because they want to have the cool stuff everyone else has that advertisers say is cool, but sometimes can't afford it.
period 7
I think this audio clip was very boring just becuase of the tone of their voices but they did make some good statements about advertising. The question why we obsess over celebrities is a good one because I will admit that I buy magazines all the time to get the new gossip on the celebrities even when over half of it is false. Celebrities rule the world in a way because they are everyones idols and they are all over TV and reality shows. Reality shows are probably watched way more that normal TV shows eventhough they are very dumb. The audio clip talked about how products are put into reality shows which I think is very smart for advirtising products. I thnk the media has alot of mind control becuase they persuade people what to look like, what products to buy, and how 100% effective the product is. Yes, I do think that self-esteems are affected by advertising. In our presentation we talked about anerexia and bulimia in young teens and women and alot of that comes from seeing these skinny perfect models and celebrities in ads. Why do you think so many women are focused on fashion and their hair and makeup?...It's all from magazine ads and commercials displaying all they stylish beautiful perfect bodied people. I think that girls like me and my friends should be advirtised not all these fake people.

I though this clip was boring to listen to, but it did make some good points on how things like TiVo are intruding and taking away advertising time for companies. The major companies though have and always will find ways to get around it and get their product name out there to consumers. And we as consumers will still listen and fall into their advertising game and go out and buy the product because we saw the name or it is associated with someone we believe is so cool and famous. The clip talked about how products are strategically placed and the companies pay so much for their product to be mentioned, which I think is dumb and seems unreasonable for what is actually being done. Having a famous person or show endorse your product really shouldn’t effect if a person wants to go out and buy something, but it has always seemed to work and people fall into it. I think people do it unconsciously, by seeing it on TV while they are just trying to enjoy their show they are bombarded with so many advertisements throughout the entire sitting. I don’t think all this advertisement exposure will ever stop and I actually think it will probably get worse with more integration of shows, celebrities, and products, along with sex, as we go into the future, and there isn’t much we can do about it.

As nicole said earlier about there voices. I totally agree they were extremely monotonous and that could be a reason that I and alot of other people do not listen to radio broadcasters.
They were basically bashing everything about today's new advertising techniques but in a sense sugar coating it. They woudl say how much they hate and all of that stuff and they say the aplaude them, by doing this they contridicte what they have just said. But they also talk about how clever advertising agencies have gotten to overcome "Tivo" in a sense. They make them stop tivoing because they think that the show is back when really it is just a commerical that is suppose to hook you in. On the other side they spoke so negatively on how advertising was they really never gave another point of view all they really did was bash on it. If you were to think about it all this advertising is helping people get stuff that they need but not always but keeping people in buisness, which is a very small reason but I just thought i would hit a positive matter on the subject since none of the broadcasters did. I feel that all of this broadcasting is clever and I almost am one of those people that get hooked in on those ads. But if it is to work which im assuming it does because they keep doing it then why not do it. Sometimes it adds comedy or just giving you a feeling like o i have that or i have done that before. Everything that they do is for a reason and they have all the rights to do it if they have the abundant amount of money that they need to spend.
pd. 3
The clip is pretty interesting and made valid points, but i had to really try not to drift off in thought because the guys talking are boring and hard to pay attention to. When they talk about Seinfeld and the Junior Mints and Snickers bars they say they don't think it is product placement, but it has the same effect as if it were intentionally placed there. I have a hard time believing that these companies didn't strategically place their product in a very popular tv show and not expect them to have an impact on the person watching. With all of the product placement in tv shows today the commercials never really end, they may become more entertaining and there might be other things going on, but in the end they are still showing their product and how good or useful it is. You might not remember the name of the product right off of the top of your head, but if you were to see it in a store you might recognize how it looks and think "oh yeah i saw so and so on tv use that i think i will get it". I know i have done that with a new soda or something and just bought it because i saw someone famous on tv drinking it. I think advertising has become the focus on everything now. You can't just sit down anymore and watch a good show or movie without some company putting their product right up in your face. It gets annoying when you are constantly watching a commercial when you are supposed to be watching a show.
Period Five
Although it was hard to pay attention. I don't mind advertising on the TV because it gets the name out there. When people use TIVO and the people in the show you are watching are also sponsoring a commercial during the playing of their show, it causes people to stop and look at the ad because they think the show has started although it was just a commercial. Another way to seek in advertising is when shows add hot products or just products that are trying to get some publicity. I think that adds can be harmful to people. Most people look up to the celebrities that sponsor the advertisement and they think that by using that product that they can either be more like their favorite celebrity or that by using the product that they could be closer to meeting that person. The audio clip could have been better composed although it did have some good points. They also bash some of the technology that they love so much because as the technology progresses the advertising has to progress as well other wise it would be pointless.
period 5
I found this audio clip very very boring and i didn't think i would be able to listen to all 10 minutes of it. Like many have said, the people's voices are just so monotone and could put you to sleep. Although it was very boring it did have some legit points. Advertisment is everyone and almost all of us are oblivous to it. We watch things and dont even realize what we are seeing. In movies they use brand names to advertise but yet we think its just a coinsidence that it is there. Not any more, i am now very alert when watching commercials and movies. I almost have like an eye for it now, they always pop out at me. When both Greta and Whitney presented they taught us how to notice these things and why things are used how they are. I think advertising becomes intrusive when it depicts women or anyone at that matter and this usually happens when using sex to sell advertisment. Sex sells. It is used everywhere in advertising and it most of the time taken too far. People need to see past these brainwashing advertisments and just think and buy stuff for themselves because they want to, not because some celebrity is endoursing it. Celebrities are often used in advertisment because sadly enough we are obsessed with them. We look to them to set the latest trends and fashion advice. They are the ones who set the bar for many people who are later left disappointed that they can not live up to that lifestyle.
This ad was not appealing to me what so ever. At first i was listening and it was somewhat interesting but then it made no sense to me whats so ever and i could not pay attention at all. However our discussions in class i am able to pay attention to. To fully disect an ad and see every single point of view and how their is a reason for everything is very interesting for me. Everything that is put behind these ads makes you wonder is this all on purpose or just a cowincedence. Sometimes maybe we over think these things. Yeah some things are put there for a reason but not evrey single little thing is on purpose...but who knows maybe im wrong. Advertising is a confusing world. We get persuaded just over simply sex. These ads have definetely gone too far though. Relating sex with cars and food even thats a little ridiculous. Flipping threw magazines and watching tv commercials I analyze and notice every little single thing and for the first time in a long time i feel like i actually learned a very valueable trait. I probably will use this for the rest of my lie unlike advanced algebra or history this advertising thing is really making a difference in my life and actually sticks in my brain which is crazy. I feel like i have accomplished so much and im actually proud of myself for noticing these things. It has made me more alert and even a better writer. Half naked woman with red nails and selling a car isn't saying buy this car its saying SEX, if you drive this car you will simply get a woman like that is what they are intending which is completely false, but people actually think these things. Who thought that we would fall for these silly tricks.
Period 7
I personally didn’t find this audio clip form “On the Media” very interesting because it was hard to keep listening to the audio clip. The clip was kind back and forth and just way to long in general to make it to the end. If I would have ran across this just online someplace I would not have stopped to listen to the clip since I was forcing myself to finish the entire clip. I wasn’t able to take much from it because of how bored I was trying to focus on the clip. But there was one thing that I did catch. How advertisement is now not just between shows but is in the show so people can’t skip over it, viewers are forced to watch the advertisement. I don’t really think advertising can become intrusive because we don’t have to buy into it. The only reason the ad is in the show is because they know viewers will buy it but in reality if we would just have some self control maybe they would back off and leave the shows alone and not be so “intrusive” if you can call it that. The only reason the media has control in the world is because once one person starts it’s just a bandwagon and everyone else starts in too. Also the only reason we obsess the lives of celebrities because that is all the media talks about. Maybe if they would speak about what is truly important like the economy or possible the continuous debt our country is going farther and farther into we would not care one bit about what celebrity is with whom. This fits right in with the Medias idea of how the world should be. They say we should be informed about our surroundings but it’s hard to be when we are not told everything. This keeps the consumers dumb and buying, buying more and more not realizing that their money could be spent on better things or kept in our own country. I also believe that if people’s self-esteem is really affected because they can’t realize that the ads have been touched up by so many people that there probably isn’t a real spec on the person in the final ad. So if people want to be influenced by that then fine just don’t go out and blame other people for you stupidity.
pd. 7
I personally thought this audio clip was pretty boring and I didn't really get much out of it because it was really hard paying attention to what they had to say. I think advertising is intrusive because there really isn't any way around it. Whether you like it or not your forced to see advertisements every day, whether it be at home or school. I realize that advertising techniques work and everything but I guess I just don't really know how effective it is. They talked about product placement in tv and movies but I really don't even notice it; so in my case I dont really think its effective.
I believe, along with many other people that this add was very boring as well as monotone. I think advertising becomes intrusive when, like the lady in the recording said, gets you to think that the commercial is over and you stop your Tivo thinking your show is back on. This is exactly what the advertisers want you to do, this helps sell their product for people that try to get around it. Furthermore, I think it becomes intrusive when every 10minutes you see some ad directed towards you. This is the kind of thing that causes people bankruptcy because they buy every ad they see and want to be like the ad. This makes it very hard for people to think and buy for themselves, they constantly see ads that shape what they buy. You see adseverywhere, so unless you live in the woods, you would see some ad that you have a very high chance of getting into your head. Another thing, everyone has an image they try to fit into, so when they see someone like them or want to be like, they probably buy the product that got endorsed. This causes it to be very harmful because not everyone is the same, and alot of people definitely are not like celebrities even when they dress and act like them. It can also be good thought, do to the fact that the economy is build around supply and demand. Even though I think that a person more of a like long thing to hurt/ruin then the economy. A person will have to deal with how people see them and act. The economy effects everyone, therefore is more accepted to be changed.

I thought this audio clip was very interesting on how they presented advertising in movies and TV shows. The mono tone voices did however make it a little boring at times. If you think about it, in our everyday lives we simply cannot escape advertisements no matter what we do. They are everywhere and in everything that we see bombarding us with different ideas every time we look somewhere. What ones should we believe, should we believe any of them? Now they are putting product placements in movies, watch a movie and you have to get something advertised to you. I think it is a brilliant idea with the TEVO but just so it doesn't get over done and ruin a show. The second we try and think about something the media comes in and tells us that we will supposedly be happier with a certain product. The part of the industry that is corrupt is when they start making people doubt their self-image and well being. The media drills into our heads that we are not good enough without a product. How far will the advertising business go before they realize they are just corrupting society, tearing down people for their gain?
You all remember the short story by Kurt Vonnegut entitled "Harrison Bergeron"? Do advertisements "handicap" our thinking? I think they do, if we are following a show closely or if we are driving carefully or if we are focusing on _______, then are interrupted by the ubiquitous ads.
pd 5
I think that the clip is a little boring, but it did make very valid points. The voices were kinda monotone, but I believe i did get the jist of the clip. I believe that we have become so accustomed to all the advertisements that we don't really take them in unless it relates to our intrests, or if it is too repulsing. I think it is too hard to think and buy for ourselves. We are bombarded by so many messages throughout the day that we start to subconciencely believe some products are better based on the best advertisement. We look at the ad and if it looks "cool" to us, we will go to the store and buy it to see if it works. Also friends and surrounding people have an effect on us, because we believe and trust what they have to say, and if they say one product is better then we will go out and buy it based on their word. I don't believe the whole industry is currupt, because i believe they have good intentions, but they have to at least know the harm they are doing to the public. They have to know that they are harming the public with the use of their advertising. I think we obsess over celebs' lives because they seem perfect to us because we could never be one of them. I think we look up to them because they have amazing talent, but they need to be role models. Rigt now they are being a poor influence on today's society with all their drugs and alcohol. I believe self-esteem is affected because little girls look up to pretty celebrities hoping they can be like them some day. All in all not a whole lot of people are going to end up like those stars. They are giving young girls a false sense of reality to the real world. The real world is nothing like what those celebrities do.
period 3.
I think that ads can easily handicap us, but is it harmful? At times, I believe it can be extremely harmful, and at other times, as Chad stated, I could care a less and would rather just tune into my show or flip the page in the magazine. When we consider all the sex and immortality being placed in ads, yes, it is negatively affecting our society. The more repetitiveness we see of issues such as sex and demoralization in ads, the more immune we are to the affects it is having on us. We subconciously begin to think we should look like the models on the page, we should drink what the famous athletes are drinking, and we should wear what the celebrities are wearing for absolutely no valid reason other than the advertisers ability to make us feel this way to sell their product. I do not think we conciously tell ourselves, "I need that Gatorade drink because so and so is drinking it", but by seeing an ad effectively advertising Gatorade we will be more likely to pick that off the shelf rather than another sports drink. Do I think drinking more Gatorade than any other sports drink is harmful? Not at all. Therefore, I think on Gatorade's part, this would be nothing but effective advertisement. But, when companies inappropriately insert sexual inuendos, half-naked men and women, or repulsive humor into their ads, they are running society downhill at an uncontrollable pace. These things can affect people not only subconciously, but conciously as well. A young girl will ACTUALLY say to herself, "I must look like that model if I want to be accepted", and I believe if an ad has an affect like this on a young girl, which millions of ads today do, then advertisement, in this sense, is being taken too far. There is no reason to use naked girls to sell cell phones. Absolutely no reason at all. It is raising the depression rates just as much as it is raising thier sales. But, I guess this is the risk they are willing to take in order to sell their product.
As for movies, I do not see inserting advertisements into movies as a big deal at all. If the movie and the advertisement company are willing to pay the money, why not? It's their movie and their advertisement and our choice to watch it. I don't think this is really an arguable issue. A movie including advertisements does not repel or attract me to it more. It just does not matter either way to me. I think it is a good way for ad companies to brand us, meaning, the more we see the product the more likely we will be to buy that product, but props to them. They spent the money to get our money. It's just the way the world works, and with devices such as Tivo, and others, it is just a clever resort for ad companies. They have to advertise somewhere, and I think movies is a clever choice on their part. I am thankful it is in movies, where usually I am so tuned into it that I wouldn't notice the ad at all, rather than somwhere where I totally notice and am completely affected by it. What if ad companies were constantly calling our homes, ringing our doorbells, and bombarding us as we walk into stores? At least if it is in movies, most of the time we are naive enough to not conciously notice the ad, and do not have to be rudely disrupted by the companies in order for them to get their point across.
prd.3
I would have to agree that advertisment has been intergrated into more and more things. They now market products not only during commercials but also during the very program. Talking about how much people enjoy a product allows the company to get their name out there that much more but also show that the characters are interested in it too. They also talk about the way Seinfeld use to have products within their show but out of necessity for the scene. Now when a product shows up in a tv show money is more then likely switching hands to get air time. I loved the part where they talk about a ad featuring Tina Fey which takes place while a show she stars in is on commercial. An effort to confuse people with tivo to stop fast-forwarding and stop at the advertisment. This is probably the most brilliant marketing idea I have ever heard of. Companies biggest problem is tivo so they've resorted to trickery to get more views. I find this very funny because I too have a tivo and use it as much as possible and have been deaked in the same way but was totally unaware of it. I have to applaude the people who come up with these ideas because of how crafty it is. I also have no problem with it. I actually have very little problems with any advertisments I see. I do believe companies have the right to sell their product how ever they wish. If it seems to be offensive and attracted little interest from people then they wasted all that money and have nothing to show for it. But if that same offensive ad seems to attract people then why not exploit it. If that means pushing the envelope then I dont see why a company shouldn't. I only think ads handicap the minds who are easily manipulated. I for one dont pay attention to 99% of advertisments. The only ones I do change my focus to are the really funny ones that I enjoy. Such as the recent Burger King commercials. I would stop on the channel with the commercial just to watch to guys sing about a burger like simon and garfunkel. I found it to be hilarious and even went on youtube to show others how funny it was. But to this day I have not tried the burger they were advertising. I guess what Im trying to say is I dont believe advertising is that influetial. For example, Eric Hanson's paper on Peak anti-freeze, I would have respectfully disagree with a lot of what he said. I believe that ad was as simple as putting an attractive famous women on a product to sell it. I find it hard to make the connection between the mountain symbolizing a man and that mountain is something she can never reach because she is a women. Peak has had that same logo for a long time and Im sure when other people have endorsed Peak that the mountain was not looked upon as an unconquerable man. But now put a women on there and their logo all of a sudden means a bunch of different things such as the mountain being a penis. I dont think so. Its a hot girl selling anti-freeze the end. Atleast thats the way I see it. Dont get me wrong some ads go deep very deep but in our ad analysis lately I have the feeling that people are looking for things that arent there and I get annoyed with it. Such as when ever there is any red in an ad that it automatically means they are trying to get certain emotions going. There are undoubtly ones where red is a major factor but a lot are just ads that happen to have red in them. But it seemed liked everytime someone analyzed an ad with any red it was brought up to be this huge thing. Alright im done whining. I like analyzing ads for what I think they mean but dont like looking for things that I dont think are there. So keep the advertisments coming. Im sure I will more than likely be uneffected but hope that I will be influenced by what I see to a certain degree.
Period 5
When I first clicked the play button to listen to this audio clip I thought that it was going to be a little boring. After listening for a little bit I realized how many good points that they were making. It is amazing to me how much money that advertisers will pay just to have their brand of something in a television show. Something even as simple as a candy bar. I enjoyed how they talked about Seinfeld with the snicker bar. I also agree when he said that they probably didn't even do that as a way to advertise, they probably just picked a candy bar that most everybody loves. I think that it is very hard to think/buy/decide for myself when I see all these different advertisement and different celebrities using the products. These advertisements make people think that if they use their brand (of whatever) they can be just like the model in the ad, or the person on the television show. To me, this is ridiculous because almost nobody makes decisions for themselves anymore. I honestly don't know why we obsess over the lives of celebrities. Aren't they human beings just like us? And when advertisers put these celebrities, that people are obsessing over, in their ads the self-esteems of many people are affected. They aren't affected in a good way either. Some people start to criticize themselves in ways to think that they need to be more like the person in the ad. I think that advertisements in television shows are less noticeable to people because that isn't what they are focused on. I think that advertisements in things like magazines have a much bigger influence on people rather than in television shows and movies. So I think that advertisers waste a lot of their money on putting their product in shows and movies because, a lot of the time, people don't remember things like what kind of water they were drinking.
pd. 3
This is ad is interesting. It is interesting because it has a couple of people that seem to know what they are talking about. They talk about how ads are now in our tv shows that we watch. So now, as i think about it, we can now not escape ads in the least. Now even when we think we are watching an actual show, we are still being stuffed with advertisment! When they bring up "30 Rock" and "Seinfeild" now that I think about it we are always being shown ads. And its a very clever way that company's have worked it
pd.5
I had to replay this clip three different times to finally pay attention. Once I did listen to it the information was very interesting. It talked about advertisers having to use movies and TV shows more and more to attract buyers. This is something that we have gone over in class. When you told us you had seen Hancock and noticed the various companies throughout the movie. This is not a new technique, which we found out with "The Terminator" but, is being used more and more. I think it is hard to decide what to buy for ourselves today. I know every time I go to a gas station I buy a Gatorade even though I know that Powerade is almost as good and much cheaper. And that’s just an example of me knowingly being controlled. I don’t think that because we are affected like this makes the industry corrupt. They are just trying to make money and use techniques that they feel are necessary. I think people obsess over celebrities because of what the media makes them out to be. They are just normal people but, because the media makes them out to be Gods people worship them. Advertising can affect people and their self-esteem but, this is what they want to do. If they can make people feel bad about themselves for not wearing the “in clothes” or other things they have accomplished what they want. Most people will go out and buy that brand of clothes or what ever it is.
Kelli H. 1
I believe advertising becomes intrusive when it is so provacative, makes people think in a way they never have before, and how far some companies go to get there product to appeal to their audience. Without even knowing it we see advertisements almost everywhere we look. It is on cars, billboards, clothes, signs, on the radio, on television, and many more places. It is hard to think for ourselves when we are bombarded with messages for various products. So when deciding what to buy the advertisements get into our heads so deap that it influences our decisions about some things that you would never even think about doing before the certain advertisement came out and made you think in an abstract way like they want you too. The media wields the mind control of people all the time wheather we like it or not sometimes in good ways and in other times not so good ways. Obviously they are trying to get you to buy a certain product or do a certain act with there product, they try to appeal it to you so you will do things you have never done before. We obsess over the lives of celebrities because they are portrayed to be the prettiest, most known, perfect bodies, and the perfect life mentality that everybody wants for themselves. People see them all over in advertisements and wish that they could just like them. The self esteems of people are meant to turn bad by the advertisements they see because they are leading you to disappointment the majority of the time. The advertisements all seem to lead to make you feel bad about yourself in some way or another.
pd 5
In this ad, the women and men are separated and walking in a line. Everyone looks the
same and dresses the same. The ad tries to tell you that you can look different from others. The boy and girl use VO5 products so that they look different. If you buy this product then you will be different from others too. It is hard for us to buy it because everyone is so different. So it does not convince me to buy it.
Ads can brain wash us because many people want everything they see in the ads. Some people may become jealous so they have to buy it. Companies know what we feel and try to convince us to buy their products. Just like some companies use celebrities because people want to be just like the celebrities. People want to be thin, beautiful and handsome with muscles and tiny waists. People are jealous of the celebrities so they buy the products so they will be as cool as the celebrities. Yes this can definitely affect the self-esteems of people because they feel hurt when they can not be perfect but nobody is perfect. That part is sad. Also this ad shows the two young people want leave because they do not want to obey the teachers and rules all the time. They want to be unique. This ad tries to show us that people want equality, but it does not always happen. People want to be different.
pd. 7
This clip was boring because it was just a few random people complaining about companies trying to get their products noticed. It does how ever; make a few good points about how hard companies try to get their product noticed. Advertising never really can be intrusive if you don’t let it. It only can bug you like it does to these people in the clip, if you think about how the companies are trying to get you to notice their products. We can think for our selves. The products and placements of the products are really only to get you to think “hey, maybe I want a Coke.” I can’t make you like a product. If you hate Coke the product placement isn’t going to make you like it. Again the media can only affect you as much as you let it. I don’t think the industry is corrupt, the companies are just trying to do all they can to get to notice their products. I think we are obsessed because we don’t necessarily like the person but rather the accomplishments of them or their possessions. It can affect your self-esteem because you see what you want to look like.

I found this audio clip to be very boring but they did make some good points about advertising. The experts talking about advertising in this clip know what they are talking about and show us how advertising rules our world. I learned how advertising is in every tv show not just the commercials between the shows. Now advertisements are taking over the tv shows we watch and I'm really getting tired of it.
Whenver a commercial comes on i just flip channels now only to usually find another channel is on a commercial, too. I definitely think that tv has gone to more advertisement than actual tv shows. I believe advertisements are overdoing it these days by putting them into movies and tv shows. They make people think they need that product because their favorite character in a movie or show is using it, so they should, too. We see so many advertisements daily that a normal person has no chance to decide what they would like for themselves, because ads are forcing them to like their product. If you use this product you will become beauty and sexy or get all the chicks maybe even be a star athlete, its just stupid. Many people change who they are because they think they need to be like the people in the commercials only to find out that they will only be disappointed to not look or be like a celebrity. I mean if you look at a magazine today half or over half the thing is advertisement its getting really annoying. I would like to just enjoy my movie or magazine with out trying to be advertised something.
Hey Mr. C: This is Mr. C. Be sure to read Erin S.'s exercise, which can be found printed on paper on your desk. Don't forget.

I am going to have to agree with everyone else that said it was very boring! Of course companies put their logo and product everywhere they can. If they don’t try to get the word out about their product, they aren’t doing their job! That is the point of advertising. They want to catch your attention, good or bad, they are still getting your attention. I think that as a country all we do is complain. If more people would just accept the fact that companies rule the world, which they do, we could all just move forward and get along. If their wasn’t advertising, how would we ever know what is going on in our world? So big deal if you don’t like a certain ad, all you have to do is change the channel or look away. Yes I agree that some ads are boring, or long, or just plain stupid, but that is that and there is nothing I or anybody else can do about it. So my advice would be to all of you people that take this too seriously, just loosen up a bit and drink it all in, cause advertising is only going to become more plentiful as technology gets better every day. So the worst is yet to come.

I thought the clip was quite boring, i'm not going to lie! Advertising is intrusive in our lives because we can't watch a movie with out advertising in the background. For example, i watched spider man 2 last night and the scene where Toby is in the pizza place where he gets fired, there is Dr. Pepper everywhere. The guy in the background has a cup of it and a bottle of it on his table. Who needs both? And the fridges behind the desk, they are all Dr Pepper and the soda in them is Dr Pepper and 7-up. All those labels on the cans face forward so you can read them. It's hard to decide what brand or company to trust when there are so many. I think they control what we buy because if you see more of one company than another, you will pick the most seen one. I think America is obsessed about celebrities because they can live a life for us that we all dream of. We all want nice cars or a big home with advanced computers in the walls. We all want maids or butlers serving our every wish. Self esteems are effected by advertising. When i see a model with a perfect body and hair i want that. I'm sane enough not to go anarexic(sp) so i never worry about that. I have pretty good genes to stay healthy during my life, but i stil find myself scared i'll become one of those people that have to shop at a plus sized store.

I think that this media clip was just a bunch of people who dont have anything better to do with their time sitting around and talking about advertising. I think that a clip like this could be interesting if they would have made good points and if it didnt sound like monotonous people making something out of nothing ie. the stephen colbert joke about man doritos, it was simply a joke and they took it seriously and made something out of a simple joke. Also they talk about all the commercials, if you dont like the commercials then it is as easy as clicking a button instead of whining and whining about things that people dont even think or care about. I dont TV is an art form, people who watch TV dont delve into the commercials, people watch TV to relax or watch a program, people dont sit down after a hard days work and think about all the sweet commercials that they are going to see that night and how artistically they were put together.

I found this clip very interesting. The pionts that it was making about how much money and effort that the advertisers put into endorising their products amazes me. Popular televison shows are having their character's endorse products which are typically essential to the scene or character but yet sometimes go unnoticed. I can honestly say that the products shown on television shows that i personally watch completely affect me and are meant to target people like me that are intruiged by the show or the characters.I guess you could say the industry is corrupt. I have watched the show, Sex and The City, and seen Sarah Jessica Parker's charachter treat herself to a $600 dollar pair of Jimmy Choo pumps, the next day I found myself online searching for Jimmy Choo's website, realistically i would never spend that much money on a pair of shoes but that doesn't mean there are people out there who would. Almost all of us either follow a certain character in a movie or look up to a famous athlete. I don't know how many times I have caught my brother looking for the NEW LeBron James shoes in order purchase. We purchase procucts to either try to become successful, athletic or beautiful like the role models we look up to but are setting ourselves up for disappointment.

The clip had some good thoughts on advertising, but it was very boring! I think advertising becomes intrusive when it deals with sex. Sex may sell but it also degrades men and women. The images have gone too far. I dont like looking through magazines and seeing half dressed celebrities. None of us look like them so we feel bad about ourselves and wished we looked like them. It is hard to ignore advertisements. They are trying to make our decisions for us by telling us what to buy. We see advertisements everyday. And i think they influence our decisions. The media controls this whole world. Where would we be without it? Everyone at sometime in their life wishes they could be a famous basketball player, model, singer, etc. When we see celebrities promoting a product we are more than likely influenced if we like that celebrity. We have all wished we could look like a famous celebrity too. I used to want to look and sing like Martina McBride! It is hard to be comfortable with yourself when we see images of genetic lottery winners. In my opinion i do think that a persons self esteem can be affected by the images of advertising. If i see a gorgeous women on an ad i look at it and think to myself how did she become so pretty, and then i realize sometimes they arent always that pretty. Makeup covers up alot of flaws, and these days with technology you can photoshop anything to make it look perfect! As years go by i think advertisement will become more and more intrusive. But like we talked about in class, maybe someday we will become immune to it and it will be ok. This thought scares me!

I thought this audio clip was ok. I think the people in it did a good job in describing how product integration is now in tv. They talk a lot about the show 30 rock and how it is a tv show that explains through the events in it how tv shows themselves work. The reference to 30 rock caught my attention because it made me realize what exactly the show was about in more detail than what I have seen just watching it on my own. The audio clip helped me to find parts of tv I had not looked into further, such as how the Real World is the best example of product placement in shows on tv. Right from the beginning of the show all the way to the end, the Real World, as well as almost all reality shows, uses people to promote certain products. These products are used in a couple ways. They include having the people in the show use them, having the name of a product in view, or by having the product be a prize. Anyways, I agree with the audio clip that there needs to be a line drawn, whether it means having product placement limited (so that no writer would be influenced to change the story line just to fit in a product for money) or having it existent only in the common advertisement. Even though the clip was boring to listen to, I thought it was somewhat interesting to see an expert’s take on product integration.
pd.3
I believe the line to becoming intrusive is crossed in every advertisement. In an ad for even something as innocent as skittles, they show how if you eat their product, you too can be beautiful and have everything you want. How can we think for ourselves in this world of advertisements? It's hard to think for yourself in any situation, but advertising companies make it very difficult to let us decide for ourselves what product is better. Why would anyone in their right mind buy a product that doesn't make them a more desirable person? We think that because the product is advertised more, we will be more "advertised" by using, wearing, or eating their product. It's crazy to think of how much power the media wields. I know that I buy certain products because they have a better look, or even just because it has the "better" brand name on the product. I think a lot of the advertising industry is corrupt, but not all of it. I'm holding onto the promise that there is one company out there that isn't out to take over my mind. But there are companies that make us believe we are crap unless we use their products. They use celebrities to endorse their product because they know deep down everyone wants to be a celebrity, everyone wants to be noticed. I believe our self esteems are affected greatly by advertising. We think we need to be as skinny and as beautiful as the models in each advertisement, and we'll do anything to get to that point, including buying that product.
After listening to this clip, I got to wondering, what kind of ads affect us more? The ones were its blatant, and stupid, and sticks in our head? Or the ones that seem as if it could come out of everyday life. In the clip it talked about how a guy got his hand caught in a vending machine. And this is considered an ad for that company. So, no matter if you notice it, think its just normal, or don't even pay attention, ads will always be trying to get you to buy a product. Its so common and wide spread through tv, magazines, and even when you walk outside that people are just learning to tune the adds out. And as people become more resistant to advertisment, the ads evovle to better get under our skin. Its a process of escalation.

It took me three attempts to actually get myself to sit down and listen to this audio clip. The minute I turned it on to hear the monotone voice.. I knew I was in trouble. The next time I listening to it I made it about 2 minutes in. The first pointless thirty seconds really just took me away from the clip and at that point had no interest in listening to the rest. I know that was an advertisement for the “radio show” but was it really necessary to be that long? I think that is a prime example on how an advertisement can turn and advertise itself in a negative way the minute the advertisers voice starts speaking.
When I turn on my TV to watch my favorite shows I turn it on to watch them.. not the advertisements within the show. I don’t care what product is being used in the show to get me to be subconsciously pursued into wanting that product. Don’t get me wrong, when watching TV I do notice the little random advertisements like, “Oh hey she’s drinking a coke.” The more I see it the more I realize I don’t mind it because I’d rather see real products within a show being advertised than the fake ones that are normally shown. Why waste the time using a fake product when a show can make even more money and advertising another. Using fake products is advertising fake products and that’s a waste of advertising to me.

As a famous man once said “ Oh my God, shut up!” This audio clip from On the Media was with out of doubt the most boring piece of information I have ever heard. As many of us have pointed out there voices are to monotonous and I guarantee if this was video clip instead we would see no body language whatsoever. Now I don’t want to sound like a harsh critic; they were very well informed about 30 Rock. Any funny moments that was said came from that clip which coincidentally enough they weren’t talking during that segment the actors from 30 Rock were. So 30 Rock segments that were presented to us proved to be a helpful source of advertisement. Good points were made the fact that television is probably the best source for advertisement or radio in this case, if presented by a marketable person such as Tina Fey or Alec Baldwin when they brought up Verizon Wireless. Now that works for them because they are famous and well known, for the ever so popular On the Media cast not so much. Mainly the fact that I wanted to fall asleep and punch my computer the fact they were so boring. To be fair though they were very well informed but need to change the setup as to how they present they’re information. Now that doesn’t mean we should advertise products with famous celebrities any chance we have; sometimes it’s not acceptable to promote a product such as inauguration for our next president, no one wants to see the higher minutes at no cost when Obama accepts his position. So we have to be careful and decide what’s appropriate and what’s not appropriate. Personally I think everyone can agree that On the Media could advertise a chance for immortality and all you had to do is listen them talk for ten minutes and no one will do that because they are so BORING!!
mr. c i think it be best to show an interesting presentation instead of this one...like mine from what i hear haha
if only we had a camera haha

I found this audio clip very interesting. The fact that we used to pay for TV by watching advertisements is very true. Advertisers were glad to pay for our TV as long as we were saturated with images of their product. Now that people can Tivo through ads, advertisers are having to come up with more creative ways to get their product noticed. Advertisers try to integrate their product into all different art forms from movies , to books, to theater plays. More and more these days you can pick out brands of products in movies that used to never be there. Ever since movies started being made to recently there were never many product placements in these films. Now advertisers have to rely on that coke or FedEx truck in the film to get the recognition they think their product needs. Product integration has also invaded theatre, as well as books. I don't believe that this is necessarily a bad thing but I do believe that a line needs to be drawn. Not to long from now there will be no difference between art and advertising, if it hasn't already happened. Some product placement is alright and good in some instances. You might be able to relate better to the movie if there is a product in the film that you have or know of. However, when you can't go ten minutes through a movie without product placement, there is a problem.
The audio clip is not something that I would have listened to out of my own free will. With that being said I did find it mildly interesting. It makes a lot of good points as to how companies have to now be more creative when it comes to advertising their products. Having the technology of Tivo makes commercials seem almost outdated. For those of us without Tivo, we generally change the channel during a commercial. You are what has shaped you in your life. These commercials that capture your attention has made you who you are today. Therefore, I do not feel that commercials or advertisements of any sort are necessarily bad, they just shape you as a person depending on what you want to believe and let affect you. The media doesn’t have as much mind control on young adults as adult think it does. Just because Paris Hilton goes out and parties every night doesn’t mean that we are. I do believe that the media can put ideas in the heads of young adults, but to have them actually act upon these ideas are totally within the person themself. In my opinion the reason we obsesse about celebrities because we find their lives more fun and exciting then our own. For the most part we just want to live through someone else without actually having to be in their situations. Basically, advertising does effect us, but its up to the individual as to what their going to take to heart.
period 3
I didn't think that this audio clip was interesting to listen to, but I thought it was interesting due to the fact that it made really good points. Honestly I think it's hard for me to see advertisements in movies because I'm so used to seeing them everywhere that it doesn't stick in my mind like it should. Like if I was watching a movie that had an "Apple" laptop in it, I wouldn't stop and say to myself, "Hey, "Apple" is an advertisement!" I wouldn't even notice it. I think it's because advertisements are everywhere all the time that we are conditioned to them. We don't fall for all the advertisement out there because we are not all that dumb. If we believed everything that we saw or heard, we seriously would be idiots. If we believed that buying a certain brand of perfume or eating a certain brand of chip would make us sexy and look like Brad Pitt or something, then we would have a problem. I think the reason why we obsess over the lives of celebrities is because we see them everywhere in the media. Honestly we are snoopy people and we always want to know what's going on in ohter people's lives. That's what FACEBOOK is - a place where people can snoop in on people. I'm glad that I can ignore advertisements because honestly they are so annoying, especially commercials. I don't think they effect people as much as we think they do because I never analyzed an ad in a magazine like we do now before this class, so obviously other people don't analyze ads like that either.
3
Personally, I didn't find this audio clip all to boring. Sure the voices seemed as if they dragged on forever, but they also made very mature and valid points. Whether you like it or not, advertising is everywhere in the world. There really is no way to escape it. Like it said they have products on Sienfeld but they weren't there for advertising, but in a sense, it still does advertise the product in some way. We have often talked in class how some or most advertisements can cause harm towards us. Some ads use very skinny and well endowed women in them, which can cause other women to feel insignificant or may even cause depression. Women look up to the media in a way that says how women should look or even act. If that women can't amount up to that, the women may go through different emotions that can eventually cause damage towards themselves. Now I'm not saying all advertisements are bad, but a lot definitely put out a bad vibe to the consumers. People just have to be careful and smart and realize to not let certain ads effect them to better themselves and others through out life. Advertisements have become a way of life that people may start to feel numb towards them and not realize the negative aspect certain ads may give off, which of course is a horrible way of thinking.
Although they made some good points, I think these people were very boring. I can just about imagine her sitting there entirly dressed in hemp clothing, not having showered all week, and eating organic fruits. I was acually surprised to know that she even watched t.v. Its true that we have become desensitized by advirting but I think these days we are desensitized about everything. We can sit and watch people die in war movies and not even blink. The sad truth is that has happened to millions of real people like you and I. You could virtually put anything into the catagory of "advirtising" from shoes in a magazine to an apple hanging on a tree. Unlike the magazine the apple has been pre-programmed by nature and its bright red color attracks humans and animals alike so that it can spread its seeds and create more apple trees. We have even become desensitized to people saying we are desensitized by advirtising. I could barely stand to listen to these people prattle on about this issue. I think that the real issue lies behind people who plant themselves in front of their televisions, or better yet the ones who put their small children in front of the television and replay "Cars" a million times to avoid acually parenting their children. If we decided to believe that our own minds are just that -our own, and we can have some self control when we see an ad maybe being desensitized would not be such a big problem.
5
I also thought the audio clip was boring. I dont care about analyzing advertisements. Especially when the people talk so mundanely. I dont have tivo and wont be getting it soon. I couldnt care less about being forced to watch ads in my shows because I already am forced to watch them between shows. Some shows are very interesting when the incorporate ads because it allows the writers to branch out. If you dont like the show turn off the television and go find something else to do. Even if you do shut off your tv you will still be flooded by propoganda for products. I say get used to it. If the minor nuisance of advertisements is the cost we must pay for our unprecedented technology then I am more than willing to pay. Nothing I life is truely free, and we are more connected than ever. Advertisements have been around for a long time and are just evolving with the times. They are here to stay and nothing I say or do will change that. Only the weak minded are affected significantly by advertisements. I am not affected by trends. My video games dont have ads in them.
I would have to say i agree with alot of the others on this audio. It did drag on forever and was very monotone. It did have some very good points as to how companies need to advertise to catch buyers. That brings up the question, what point does advertising become intrusive? I never realized until now that advertisers do whatever they can to advertise their product. They go so far as to advertise in tv shows now. I really haven't noticed it until we started analysing ads and commercials. I believe that we are so use to being attacked by ads in commercials and shows that it really doesn't affect us all that much. Its just like, "O look, another progressive commercial or verizon phone." As for the celebrities I believe people want to be just like them because they are the ones potrayed as the "best." The pretties or the strongest. I affects the youth alot, them trying to be like their favorite actor, actress, or singer. They are the negative advertisements that get us in troube with the real world on how we should be and not how we want to be.

Although this audio clip is very long and hard for me to pay attention to, I found it quite captivating. Even though many of us don’t realize it there are advertisements all around us in our everyday life. Everywhere we look there are advertisements. There are advertisements in movies, billboard, and even in magazines are young children in America look at. This is a scary factor considering these advertisements display a false sense of reality to the small children. You might see advertisements in magazines that have pictures of half naked women or men to advertise perfumes or even shoes. This is corrupting everyone’s sense of judgment to what is wrong to what is right. Its even going so far as to take over our search engines we use often such as Google. When you search a word on Google the first things that usually pops up are things that are being advertised. Even when you are just surfing the web you get little pop ups that come up on the side of the screen that are advertising something bizarre. Even my favorite websites to go on like facebook constantly has Ads on the bottom of the screen, top of the screen, and on the sides of the screen. Therefore advertisements are everywhere even though you not recognize it.

This clip was boring. I found it very difficult to listen to. There was no emotion really in thier voice and made it painful to my ears. I got side tracked a little bit while listing to it. It is true thought that advertising on tv is not free and we have to listin to the commericals. This is affecting us and causing us to buy these proudcts. After doing the ad anylisis i notice it all the time on tv and radio. Every thing in the world is about money. Showing clips on the radio is needed and it is more difficult. Soy Joy is smart for putting there products in the show. That is the key for advertiser now days. They need people to see there products and tv is great. Yet us as consumers it gets old as they say cause the show changes for the product. Some compinies are thinking at make it less noticable like in E.T. when he grabs a bud light from the fridge. Just the other day i was going through the channels and i ran acrost garfield the movie and he was sitting on a couch eating flavor blasted goldfish. I thought at first it was counsidence and then relized it was product placement. Soon tv shows wont' be nothing but ads. I wouldn't be supprised it their becomes ad's inside of ads. It is insane how people get paid to advertise for them. We may not be affected as much as others simply due to the fact that we are learning in the classroom enviroment about what kind of crap they try to pull. Its sad how much they target people to sell there proudcts. I feel a good product sells itself. It dosn't need a celebrity indorcer. If it is needed and gets the job done and world gets around it will sell more. Plus the company can save money cause they don't have to pay thousands of dollars to a celebrity to endorce it for them. If i ever have a product made that will be the way i sell it.
Period 1
I feel that ads are intrusive when we aren't even allowed to watch a movie without being mauled with ads. Its just terrible nowadays with ads its almost a joke how much money these companys spend on commercials and billboards. Its to a point where we are so brainwashed to buy certain name brands. For me, its Air Jordan, for other people its most likely Abercrombie and Fitch or Hollister. People are so infatuated with name brands they will buy them even if they cant afford it in the long run. I think its a joke when i go to take a leak in some bathrooms and i see these ads for random things i cant look away because its shoved right in my face.
pd. 3
I thought this video was interesting and thought provoking. Advertising has a firm grip on our thought processes and configures our thinking to whatever the message portrays. We can not buy for ourselves in today's media stronghold. Our minds are constantly warped by the advertisements that are forced into us on a daily basis. We can not avoid advertising. Mr. C made a great point that he was so distracted by the billboards as he was driving his car that he nearly got into an accident. Products rely on these attention getters to boost sales and hook customers. If we are this distracted by a simple billboard advertisement, we have no choice but to purchase products based on what we see. These ads are filled with men and women who our culture has deemed attractive. Our sex drive is used against us to force us to want a product solely based on instinct. People who do not fit this drone image want to alter themselves to be attractive. Our self-image and self-esteem falters when we see pictures of the perfect male and female anatomies in advertisement. This is especially imprinted in the young people who are new to this type of deception and are not mature enough to think for themselves. Advertisement is a part of today's culture and is becoming even more closely tied because of the targeting of the youth. I see this as a sad but true force that can not be stopped. American culture will always continue down this skewed path to an unreal self-image.
Pd.1
Another problem with commenting
I believe that advertisements do handicap our thinking because some people could go out of their way just to buy something broadcasted on tv or through a magazine. I personally do not like the audio clip cause it sounds like the talk shows on the way to school in the morning, I would rather listen to music or espn game talk in the mormorning instead of a talk deal. A good point that they made was that tee-vo should sort of be banned because viewers watching tv are not watching the ads because they don't want to see them. I think advertisements become intrusive when the show or movie you are watching on tv goes to commercials and then the company of the ads blare up the volume so people pay more attention! I do not think that is appropriate because it interrupts people conversations or just not a comfortable tone to watch on tv. I do not believe all of the industries are corrupt because some actually do not bribe at all they just get to the point of how good there product is and others put celebrities and pretty girls or good loooking guys to bribe consumers to buy the product.I also believe that if lines were presented underneath instead of having commercials many people would be upset and alot of people would not watch tv and get HBO or Showtime on the expensive channels!
I think that since advertisement is everywhere now, it is extrememly intrusive. Like for example: What if someone is sitting down enjoying a movie with their family, and then it goes to commericals. The very first commercial is for Enzyte. I don't really think it is necessary to have "Bob" in the commercial because, although his facial expression is probably helping out the product sales, it is disturbing to some people. Same thing goes for a Viagra commercial. It's intruding in many more ways than one too. Also I think that the media has brainwashed everybody in one way or another. Some ads that we may look at are completely ignored, but some obviously work because we continue to wear name-brand clothes and drive extremely expensive cars that we often can't afford. We are all brainwashed into believing that products can change and alter our lives completely. Celebrities don't help matters any either. They snatch up almost every opportunity to be in an advertisement of any kind. They are getting paid loads of money. But they probably don't even really care about the product they are promoting. But they lie and try to make us believe that since they like the product, we definitely will too. They have put mind-controlling devices in all of our heads and they know it. If there's someone out there who thinks they aren't affected by media and advertising, I would love to meet them because I know I could find a way that they are affected. As time goes on, the ads are only going to get worse. They will come up with more ideas of places to put them, and I'm almost positive that they will get raunchier. If that happens I know that we will think nothing of it because we're already becoming accustomed to sex and raunch culture. Which is sad to think about, but it works for companies so why not keep using it?
pd.5
I thought the video was actually boring but was very untrue. One hair product cannot change an entire country. So advertising is harmful and not just in this ad. In this ad it is harmful becuase it is trying to tell people that if you buy the hair product you can change the entire political system of a country. Ads are harmful becuase they lead us to believe that we can be something or do something that we really cannot just by buying a certain product. This is why advertising is more harmful than helpful.
Pd1.
I have to agree with the woman on the broadcast about how there really is two ways took look at the “horrible advertising” that can be found in almost all aspects of our lives. I do agree with her about the ads becoming too intrusive with being put into movies, tv shows, and Broadway productions. The ad companies put so much effort into finding new ways to advertise their product. They are limited to what people are going to be viewing now that technology has let the world into being more independent. We are now not forced to be at home to enjoy entertainment. Now that we are not limited to cord phones and tvs for entertainment, we are now forced to watch ads. The television companies have “made and art out of the ad placements.” The companies really do have to make an art out of the ads. People can download their favorite episodes right on to their ipods and watch the news from their cell phones. I think generally, people in the United States are actually more depressed and have a lower self esteem due to the advertising companies. Once someone sees an ad for a Coke repeatedly, the next time they go to a store for a soda, they are going to grab a Coke. The person only knows what they think they want because the name, color, and taste is what they continually see. Human nature is to do what is out of habit. If the habit is to believe ad companies, we are going to do just that.
Per 3.
The audio clip itself is a great example of what it was trying to present to its audience. The begin of the clip was a citing of sources used in the program but it also kind of felt like a product placement. During the interview the two broadcaster spoke of product placement in TV shows, this got me wondering: what things have I noticed subconsciously on the shows that I watch? One thing is cell phones; whenever I see a cell phone on a show I automatically wonder what kind of phone it is. The last cell phone I saw cleverly placed, was a Nokia. This is exactly what the phone companies want. The audio clip was not to o bad, the segment about 30 rock was interesting enough to keep me listening. The clips they had also aided in this process. The most interesting thing I thought was what Greta Beller said about the advertisers using TV show characters to trick people into watching ads. I found this both amazingly smart but also deceitfully sly. I guess the ad companies are doing their jobs; branding us with their product as to further their profits. The idea we have lost our decision making abilities is quite far-fetched. We the consumer have to make the choice of what we want, and its the advertising companies job to make sure we chose their product. Mind you this is why they have target demographics and specifics ads for each group. I don't condone such acts by any means. I don't find it right that a certain brand of clothing, or car should give you social status. I think it should be your character and morality that defines your place in society.
Period 7
There were some very interesting points made, after about 45 seconds of ear-bleed in the beginning. Once they got to the part about the Soyjoy I was thoroughly intrigued. I wonder just how much money the company had to pay to get a show like 30 Rock to, basically, make a commercial, for them, in the middle of the show. She mentioned that they are starting to use the actors/actresses, from shows, in commercials that run during same time that that person in on a show. I think that that is an extremely clever idea. I myself have been fooled by this trick. It is a dirty way to get your advertisements seen. You don’t even need half-naked women walking around if you use this style of advertising! The fact that there are people who watch the Super bowl just for the commercials, because they can be like mini comedy sketches, especially the Budweiser ones (I’ll admit it, I’ll watch the commercials and get food during game play, when during any other sport show it would be the other way around) shows that the media has more mind control over us than we think. The fact that advertisers are getting more and more control over TV shows, is sad but true. Is there soon going to be nothing, not even Tivo, that the average consumer can do to get away from marketing?
pd. 5
I think that it is true that advertisers are being hurt by tivo and products like that because they allow viewers to skip through commercials and are then more likely not to buy certain products. I think that it is truly ridiculous that advertisers feel they must create a feeling of a TV show with tons of product placement to succeed in today's economy. I think that the problem is less in the fact that advertisers are trying to trick us into watching their sneaky ads, but more in the fact that we so easily fall into the trap of not noticing how and when we are being influenced. It is sort of sad when we have to have a disclaimer before a show to tell us that it is not really a show at all, but an advertisement that has a duration of a half an hour. When society as a whole fails to see that, that is when we need to step back and notice that advertising may be so much a part of our lives that we can not tell when it is present and when it is not. I can admit that even i do not notice product placement but I am being subconsciously influenced by what my favorite celebrity or character is drinking on TV. Everyone, no matter how hard they try to avoid it, is in some way influenced by product placement.
pd7
I would agree that most people will watch a show and not even realise all the advertisement that is put in. But for those who notice either dont care or have to fact there doing it. I was one of the people who didnt care enough to pay attention. But now I'm starting to pay more attention and notice all the advertisement they put in shows. It bugs me how people strive to be like a person that makes millions of dollars for just saying a few words for a short period of time. That is why I beleive advertisement doesnt effect me but annoys me more then anything. but for the people who worship celeberties will go out and buy that very product there icon was just getting payed to say they use it or like it. I'm sure most of the celeberties dont use, do, or even like what there promoting for companies. But who would say no to a fat check for a day of standing in front of a camera and saying some words or doing something to promote the company. But with people having way to get around commercials on tv what are the companies goin to do other then get in the show. We all should of saw it coming someday. And for those who dont have tevo we get to deal with commercial advertisement and the advertisement in the show.

I think the clip made a good example of advertisements in programming and movies and how the effect our minds. I do think that advertisements handicap our minds because we don’t have the willpower to not buy something that’s advertised during our favorite programs and movies. More than likely, everyone has idolized a character from our favorite show or movie, and if that character advertises a product, we are bound to buy the product to be just like him/her. After listening to this clip I thought how much advertising in my favorite shows have affected me subconsciously into buying a product. It’s obvious that some programs over-advertise. The show is filled with so much useless product placement and advertisements that it makes the viewer watch the ads instead of the actual program. It’s true that most DVR services let you skip commercials, so that’s probably one of the reasons that companies put more advertising into our programs; but I think the reason that they offer the services is so we can stop watching advertisements and actually watch television. It’s irritating to me when I get into a show and the commercials have to come on. It might be different if the ads pertained to what the channel was. Like ESPN selling Sports Illustrated, but along with those types of ads they advertise women’s shampoos and things along that line. It’s almost as if they blindfolded us. I think it’s about time they lifted the blindfold and let us go about our lives.

Honestly, the clip was extremely boring and dry to listen to. I had to listen to it twice to try and get the whole gist of it. If this was an ad it definetly wouldn't get any customers!! However it does show some good points. It says that sometimes advertisers OVER advertise and shove their products into the viewers faces which can be a buyer turn off so to speak. Also, sometimes when watching any sort of show we don't realize how much advertising is actually in it. I'll agree if I see someone drinking a Diet Coke on tv it makes me want one! But when there are commercials every ten seconds, I get so aggrevated about missing the show that I just switch the channel. Overall, the clip was boring but it helped to show me how clever advertisers are and how much it really does affect our lives!

To be honest this clip was at times quite boring, but it had some very valid points behind it. I mean the clip talked about how movies were even becoming advertising hot spots, but i mean why not waste money in a movie by having a character drink a pepsi instead of coke... if the company is really thinking that watching someone drink a coke is going to sell more than do it because that little thing isn't going to ruin my movie experience. The only time it would really ruin it is if there were actually interuptions like commercials in a movie...now that would be ridiculous. Thats the point where these ads become intrusive on the movie experience. From my personal experience i believe these advertisers today are kind of being ridiculous on their campaigns i mean some i still go gosh i wish i had that body, but i realize the reality of life. On the other hand there are ridiculous ads that want to make us think that their product can make us something that were not, thats when ads are being intruisive, but in a way its our own faults for being so naive to believe it because if we didn't believe it then it wouldnt work and these ads would not even be around right? How can we buy for ourselves...make our own decisions and be individuals and realize the reality of life. And why do we obsess over celebrities i mean seriously their rich, famous, born into it, good looking, I mean honestly what makes them better tahn you or i? I personally can answer that with and absolutely nothing because infact in most ares we are probably more succesfull and happy tahn they are. Which brings up the question how do we measure success? Is it money is power is it fame? For real what defines success? And yes people's self-esteems are effected, apart of me feels sympathy but the others says i mean come on really are you taht naive to believe waht they are saying maybe its your own fault? I'm fine with the cards im dealt and its in my own hands to make best of what im given instead of crying and asking for sympathy from others.

This video is pretty interesting, the audio clip goes well with the screen play of the clip too. There's an intro a climax and a conclusion which fits it well. The point is that with the V05 hair gel, you could basically buck the system in china. When the volume on your TV turns up what seems like 5 notches only during commercial breaks in order to get your attension im guessing and it does just that!! It's hard to make up your own opinion when everyone seems to swallow the opinions that are shoved down your throat by advertisers and the media. The media definately holds the majority of the say-so when it comes to styles, opinions, or ideas, possibly habits too. It's corrupt becuase we buy what they say we should buy and its pathetic that they can control the market almost to the point of being considered a monopoly over the human mind. Celebrities are almost always good looking and represent what everyone strives to be, but with this kind of pressure put on us a simple goal to be like your idols can easily become an obsession. I would say yes at this time in the world a lot of kids didn't get the proper talk as kids on how you should handle this sort of thing because it was a problem then and its affecting us now.
Commercials have been removed because people do not like watching them. They do not want to see them because they are everywhere, even movies. I agree about the movies and tv shows that incorporate them and it is just like in Waynes World when he picks up the Pepsi can and makes sure the label is in camera view and then takes a drink. and another time when he is eating Doritos, which are good chips, but its really corny when he does this, because he presents it just like in a commercial. I think it is also funny that when rappers are rapping about phones, clothes, even shoes, as in soulja boy's song " I got me some bapes today" bapes are a type of shoe that are becoming popular because of him.

The audio clip was honestly pretty boring, but it was decent in that it had opinions about advertising by experts. Experts opinions are pretty useful when you want to know certain aspects of things. I think it is vertually impossible for us to think/buy/decide for ourselves when there are ads everywhere telling us a certain product is better than another, or that living this way is better than living that way. The media has way too much mid control, especially over the minded and easily manipulated. It becomes too hard to just say no to anything when it is alway there, in your face, giving you the point of view the advertisers are trying to push upon you. I believe the reason we obsess over celbrities is because the media never leaves them alone. With the media always in their business, it is almost too hard to not involve yourself in their lives. As much as celebrities are used for advertising makes people buy things they advertise because they want to be like them, have their riches, and get the public attention they would not normally get. I also believe that advertising and the media do affect people's self-esteems. How could it not? Ads are constantly making people feel bad about themselves, even if it is done subconsiously. By telling you that buying this, or using that will help you out in life, they make you feel sorry for yourself, or think maybe I can do better than I am, even if you have it pretty well. Which odds are, if you live in America, you aren't doing too bad.

This clip is not intresting at all. I had a hard time paying attention to what they were saying or talking about. The voice was very monotone and i thought it was a guys voice at first. Ads are already intrusive. Nobody wants to see or hear them. Its actually very easy to think/buy/decide for ourselves. You either do it or don't. We still have that choice to make when we see or hear something that we like. And the industry isn't corrupt, their just doing their jobs to get us to see their ads.
Advertising is intrusive by nature, it covers our entire environment so we picture ourselves with the products, it is the base of the modern human ecosystem. I do not believe advertising has become too intrusive, it's somewhat generalized; it becomes intrusive when it becomes an Eagle Eye like situation, looking and listening infiltrating our homes to personalize ads. Advertising is not mind control, it's showing options. Humans have this crazy ability they seem to forget about, it's the ability to think. We can make choices to change the channel or turn our head, the advertisement or offending image generally doesn't have the ability to follow you unless it's painted on your puppy. People spend way too much time analyzing and complaining about the sell out nature of TV shows like they can't change the channel, their analyzing improves ratings and furthers product placement. To get rid of something you don't like choose to not look. The media uses psychology and makes us believe we need certain things, but there comes a point where we have to stop blaming the media, and look introvertadly at ourselves, media does not take over the part of the mind that makes the choices of spending more than we can afford on a home or buying name brand products. People aren't physically made to buy these products, they have to be semi willing participants at least. Media controls environment to a degree, but you can choose to leave the environment, think the amish. Media and corruption are practically synomyms, the media admits to corruption the point of advertisement is to make money. Advertising has good effects too, if there was no advertising there would be no consumer and in turn there would be no job for an employee, and it waterfalls down. Celebrities are obsessed over, because they are a fantasy to the average person. Celebrities live a lifestyle we dream of, so we immerse our selves into a place that makes us feel like we are best friends living the lifestyle of the celebrity with them. Self esteem is affected, especially in people with lower inner esteem who think they're important financially, but feels that is the only thing that makes them feel accepted, and social acceptance is a psychological need. A person who is content with themselves has true self esteem that is undaunted by the big bad world's doctrine. Ad's may cover the world, but you choose to believe what they show you, you need to look at the brick wall painted to look like a nature path, and see that you can't walk on it, don't blame the paint or the wall.

When watching tv shows with an uncountable amount of product placements. When the FCC is forcing companies to copyright their product integration, having banners that display their copyrighted product. Money helps keep these problems going. The fact that there are so many ways of integrating products makes it inevitable to see commercials without even consciously interpreting whats going on. There really isn't a point at which advertising becomes intrusive. You end up getting used to the products and start to believe it is either a made up product to go with the plot or just some random thing to make the show interesting. Commercial creators think of artistic ideas to integrate products, they are finding ways of legally advertising without copyright infringement. But I find it interesting when people see these problems, yet no one has ability to do anything about it. Yes, you could write to the company and complain about it but it take a huge group of people to change or make a difference in the advertising community. When people think of advertising they think of magazine ads, posters, tv commercials, newspapers, etc. But when you start finding ads in everyday shows, then all of a sudden, people become outraged. Subconsciously we want a product due to the fact that we are exposed to these commercials time after time. And it is true that these companies have a control over our minds. It is corrupt but can be counteracted by watching with TiVo or other products. I believe many people may be affected by these commercials and cause a huge downside to our viewers. Causing even more people to try and be like a professional Actor.
