per 3. The reading was nothing I had expected. I expected Cisneros to have a very strong confident voice, but instead she seemed very frail and weak. She didn't have the passion or drive in her voice that I had guessed she would have. I liked the reading, it just was not what I was expecting.
I wonder if she is attempting to read as Esperanza. Undoubtedly, Cisneros has much vim and vigor in her language use, but I agree with Thanh--this YouTube segment reveals a vulnerability or something hard to label. Or, I guess we cannot choose our voices (mine would be that of James Earl Jones), but we distinguish ourselves with our abilities and performances.
Or, like me from my father, maybe she got her speaking volume, tone, etc. from her mother and other female influences in her life, most of whom were weak and tame? I sound almost identical to my dad, who will come speak to you about mental illness when we are analyzing One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest. Her "voice" as an author, however, is that of a mystical lioness.
