How much do these Implicit Association Tests uncover? Everyone admits that there is a lot of mental activity occurring that we "are not aware of." With so many brilliant people on campus, the Harvard creators of these IATs must know what they are doing, right?

I prefer other religions compared to Judism, which is correct.
I highly prefer thin people to fat people, which is incorrect.
I put Black americans and weapons together more then white americans, which i dont really know if thats right or not i dont thing that deep into things.
I think that the tests are a little off..I think it totally depends on the order of how things are presented to you. If you associate a group of things on one side and another group of things on the other-your brain begins to associate the same--when switched up of course it is more difficult to pick the right side just as fast as you did before...
I'm willing to consider anything the tests show me as results. All that Harvard is attemtping, I think, is get people to consider their subconscious, because the media and culture influence us, whether we admit it or not.
McCain was way higher on my preferential scale than I predicted. Giuliani way lower. Clinton way lower, too. Edwards much higher. I'm starting to wonder about the causes of these results...
The tests didn't really tel me anything i didn't already know.
I pefer whites over black.
I pefer straights over gays.
I pefer thin people over fat people.
The order the words and picures were given confused me some of the time. but for the most part the tests came up true.
Pollard--regarding people and their weight, could our culture have a bigger effect on your psyche than you realize?
these tests are wierd and hard
I have little or no preference between thin people and fat people
I have a slight preference toward white people than black people
I strongly associate males with science and females with liberal arts
I thought that some of it was true and some wasn't, but it was pretty interesting to do
I have a strong tendency towards skinny people, straight people, and young people. I don't know how credible this test can be because I kept messing up the words, but that is probably part of the test.
i have little to no automatic preference between light skin and dark skin which is true.
I have little to no automatic between fat people and skinny people, which is usually true. Depends on the situation I guess.
i dont really know how well the test worked because i didnt think i was racist against african americans and it told me im not...plus you answer questions that ask if you are and i think that kind of defeats the purpose and they should have questions that beat around the bush more than are you racist....yeah it was an ok test but too long...
It is definitely part of the test--to mess up the words. If one consistently attaches black faces with the side that reads, "European American" and "Bad," then the results will show that that person has a bias against African Americans. I must admit, I did catch myself making this error "on accident."
i have a moderate bias towards the Native American culture, whereas i think that "White" people are true Americans.
i thought that the computers analysis on this subject was correct, i knew i was prejudice towards natives. and i think it has to do with how ive been brought up and experiences w/ the race.
im also very bias towards homosexual people, more so gay men. i agreed w/ what the computer told me and also, i have been brought up thinking that gays are bad and not accepted in todays society...i know its bad to think such things about certain groups of people, but ive been conditioned to think a certain way.

i feel that the test i took were pretty much right on most of the time i do prefer young people over old people.
I was suprised with my results. I strongly pefer thin people then fat peopl. And I have never had a problem with fat people. I slightly pefer whits then blacks. And I have had no problem with black either. And I don't have a preference between gay or straight people.
The results were suprising but it was interesting.
of the tests taken, i agreed with all of them. any differences is tests scores were due to mistakes.
I slightly prefer judism over other religions (surprising)
I moderatly prefer abled people over disabled people.
I strongly prefer straight people over gays.
I thought that the tests weren't totally true. When I messed up it was usually because I wasn't paying attention. That automatically makes you prefer one or the other. I slightly prefered blacks over whites, slightly straight over gays, and slightly skinny over heavy.
i went to europe and i found that the french and france in general smells like pee...and i also found that italians smell like armpits and dont wear deodorant.....and waiting tables i found that african americans are nicer in general, not as picky, and more well mannered as opposed to the europeans who come in and they come in often
Well Mr. C it says that i prefer thin people to fat people, which some-what true. But really it depends when someone is grotesquely thin it is sicking.
Another result was that i prefer straight people over gay... i really do not care what your sexual preference is. It is your life not mine, is the way i look at it.
It also saif that i prefer other religions to judaism... i guess maybe that is because i was confermed Cathlolic. Anywho i thoght it would say i would be about the same between the two choices.
I moderately prefer thin people to fat people.
I have a slight preference for European Americans to African Americans.
I have a slight preference for straight people to gay people.
I thought that this test was interesting to take. I thought I would be equal for all, but it shows that I am not. I think some of my mistakes were from the subjects being moved around. I think that the things that I could group more easily in my mind were the ones that I didn't mess up on as much. Which makes me think that the test is accurate.
I think these tests are pretty accurate. Its weird because i tell myself that i am not racist sexist and ageist but i am a little bit and i wouldn't admit it, but the tests show me that i am a little bit.
I have no preference between blacks and whites.
I slightly prefer younger people over older.
I have no prefernce between gay and straight people.
I think these tests can tell you something about yourself, but at the same time they are definitely something that you can disagree with too.
In my opinion I think that these tests are completly ridiculous and hold no weight once so ever. Of course everyone is going to have some bias against something no matter how you answer. By having to click fast you are inevitably going to make mistakes and there for be deemed as a racist or a biast. I would have to say that everyone is rasist or biast in some way anyway just because of how they were raised and what they have been exposed to in this world. Also whos to say that the people at Harvard are right? Who says what makes you biast or racist? Maybe the people at Harvard are biast and racist themselves. At any rate they should go back to the drawing board.
2 out of 3 tests I took were pretty accurate. I don't agree with mcgoofy though. I also went to Europe and they didn't smell and had generally the same personal hygene as people in the USA.
We have to be careful of generalizing/stereotyping the Europeans, now. Do you know any stereotypes about Americans/America commonly held around the world? These are some: we're violent; we're overweight; we're greedy; we're needy and spoiled; we're obsessed with sports.
these may be some what accurate but i don't think they are fully accurate...maybe it could of been 2 points extra credit if we printed off are results but I don't believe that we should've used 50 minutes of class time for this!
I was very neutral on the tests i took only showing a slight preference to skinny people over fat people and Barrack Obhama is my Presidental Canidate for 2008
I took the test for race and sexualtiy, I thought it was very enjoyable and eye opening. For the race test it said that I liked african american more then whites. On the sexualtiy test it said that I like straight people better then gay people. The one thing i thought was off about the test is the part where you have to rate the different races or sexualtiys. I thats where someone could be a little in different.
i thought this was fun, and for me confirmed my thought that i slightly prefer whites as opposed to blacks. i thought this was kinda hard tho because alot of the time i was trying to go too fast and messing up with words i knew. overall however, the test was fun and helped me prove a point to myself.
for my age prefrence it stated that i am slightly inclined to like younger people then older people, and that i have little to no prefrence for skin color... then the presidental candidates one i think that i messed up to much. i didnt really have much of a prefrence for any of them, they were tightly packed in the middle of the scale so i dont think that one was accurate.
My results are what I expected, although perhaps a bit less dramatic: (thought my preference would be separated more than 'slightly'...
-Slight preference for Thin vs. Fat
-Slight preference for Straight vs. Gay
Obama over Hillary
The tests were accurate in my opinion. I have a slight preference towards whites over blacks. I also associated black with weapons more than i did white. i moderatly favor straights than i do gays. but i think that the way the questions were set up didn't prove a whole lot. If i see a pic of a black person i pick black, if i see a pic of a gun i pick weapon. I dont really see how you can say that just because they were on the same side makes me slighly racist.
Is being "biased" the same as being "racist"?
These tests may have been developed by a Harvard class, but they are still fundamentally flawed. The tests simply determine how fast you recognize something on its own and paired with a Good or Bad feeling. For instance, I despise Hilary Clinton (dont ask why), yet the political test rated her much higher than the other democrats. Why? Simply because I could recognize her more easily than the other faces. I don't think these studies should be taken seriously.
I'm taking your points into consideration. Thank you for your views. I agree with all of you, if you agree that's possible. Here are logical follow-up questions, then: DOES A TEST or study exist that could accurately or effectively bring out an implicit bias within you? HOW COULD THIS test/study be improved? The real way to examine bias is to immerse one into a confrontational situation, but much of the time that is not possible.
The tests seemed accurate, but the reversing of questions and answers confused me. It was definently eye-opening for me because I always equaled straight people and gay people, but the test said I strongly prefer straight people over gay people. Also, about the race and weapon test it's difficult enough when the test is switching the answers on you and you trying to going as fast as you can, but viewing black and white as races, not only colors seems unfair since most people associate white with the good guys and black with the bad guys. They're only colors not caucasions and african americans. I don't think of myself as racist, but I know I would have picked weapons with black because the color black is generally used for bad or evil. And how many times have you seen a white gun? You wouldn't see an angel wearing black or the devil wearing white.
Terrific points, Asher. A long time ago, when people were designating colors to signify races, it is likely the concepts of white=good and black=bad were considered heavily. The white English speakers at the time were setting up a binary opposition, a labeling relationship in which they would be associated with goodness and their "opposites" would be associated with bad.
The test doesnt seem accurate to me because all you have to do is be able to match up pictures or words with the words and it doesnt really prove anything because when they switch it up your mind could just get confused it doesnt mean that you are was it says that you are.
I don't think that these test are accurate. The test told be that i am prejudice against handicapped people. I have a cousin that is handicapped and i do not think that i judge him or any other handicapped people for that matter. But maybe i am don't relize it, and i am slightly. I don't know for sure if i believe the tests or not.
my test told me that i had a moderate preferance for whites over blacks, and i do not agree. I went to a school in florida where half the school was black and i got used to their culture and the way they act.i had several A.A. friends and they had no different effect on me than the whites.
I personaly didnt like these test, i feel as if they really didnt tell me anything at all. I took Bias test against fat people. First of all it told me it couldn't even tell me my results because of too many errors. I didn't understand the whole process i guess it was a little confusing.
Indeed, the tests' aims can be confusing. Here's the gist: if you consistently sent a black face to the bad/white category, you may have a bias against black people because you associate black people with bad things. We all know it is much more complicated than that, but this is the gist.
This was a good way to help us better understand ourselves and things that we are not quite aware of. Though I wonder if it is some what not as accurate as it could be. It took me awhile to get used to the test switching the keys on me. Though by the third test I think I was used to it. It has made me curious if it was correct, I think to make sure I might retake some. Other than that it was interesting and a good experience.
For me the harvard test was pretty accurate. It basically told me that I slightly prefer things that I have grown up with, and that I was used to. For the most part I dont know if it is completely accurate, but it was fun non the less.
I thought it was a confusing test to take but when I saw the results in the end they were interesting. Apparently I like Rudy Guiliani over Mike Huckabee which I never would of guessed.
Overall i think that these tests were kind of inaccurate. Now they might be right on some of the things, but i dont think they they can tell a perosn exactly what they think about another group of people or other type people. The idea in them is good, but people are going to believe what they want to believe not listen to a test/survey. I think that this world will never be an unbiased world, people are always going to have opinions or superstitions about others. We can try all we want to be unbiased, but there will always be that southern farmer that is racest against african americans, or there will always be that assumption that asian people are genious'. I'm not saying that the world isn't going to get better with they racial problems, I'm just saying there will always be some that will never change.
I felt that the test did uncover some feelings that I did have hidden. I do realize that if you wanted to you could have made the tests say what you wanted to say. But if you did like i did and just sat down and took the tests seriously...well i felt like it did expose how i felt. It told me that I have a slight preference for over weight people, which now that I think about it almost all of my boyfriends have been bigger guys. So it seems that there is some truth in the tests.
i was surprised by the resaults i got but i know that i messed up because i had the keys memorized to the ones they were before
I did not realize that in order for these results to be correct you had to push the keys as fast as you could. I took my time because I wanted to get everything matched up with the right picture/word. So for me it always said that I do not prefer one thing over an other. When in reality I know I can tend to bias on certain subject even when I try not to be.
For me the tests didnt reveal much other that the fact that I seem to be racist against john edwards. I dont think that the tests really told me anything or maybe its just that I didnt take the right tests. Harvard students are most likely no less that genious but these tests didnt impact me alot, although I do agree that we do have alot of mental activity going on that we arent always aware of. Which is most likely why these tests are effective to some people.
I discovered that I slightly like skinny people as apposed to fat people, and I slightly prefer straight people as apposed to gay. I also determined that I am completely neutral in terms of politics...even when comparing Bill Clinton and George Bush. I thought that these tests were probably pretty accurate...but I still find it funny that I am not swayed left or right for politics because my whole family is one extreme or the other and it shows nothing rubbed off on me...thank God!
Apparently, I have strong biases against homosexuals, and I strongly associate blacks with dangerous weapons... Hmm...
I feel these tests were an interesting way to expand our thinking and open our eyes to some new ideas, but they are also easily fooled... The results you get can be the results you want to see...
I thought these test were interesting to take and see how racist I'am, which at first I thought I was not racist.
I'm not sure if really liked the tests we took. They didn't seem as if they could be accurate enough to tell us what we didn't know already. It may have made people wonder if they really do have a bias against something they never really knew they had. Maybe they don't and they just blow off what they learned.
i didnt think the tests were that helpful. i think that is something that takes more than pushing buttons on a computer to tell you if you have "hidden" biases. it think that you knew the results you would get for the tests before you took them. I was not surprised by any of the results.

according to the tests it stated that i preferred skinny people over fat people...I have friends and family that are not skinny and i like them just as much as i would skinny people...I think these tests are true in some cases but not mine.
