Ode to a Classmate--due Wednesday, May 15

COMPLETE THIS TASK INSTEAD OF THE LAST OTHELLO BLOG TASK, WHICH WAS ORIGINALLY DUE MAY 9--

Mimicking the short--two to three paragraphs--odes I have shown you from Time magazine's 100 Most Influential People issue, write in praise about a laudable classmate.  Like the Wisdom Retreat, perhaps think about a classmate who isn't as widely-acknowledged as some, due to what our society has come to value and publicly praise the most.  Include (1) a category (Titans, Artists, Pioneers, Icons, Leaders are Time's--use one of these five or create your own category name), (2) her/his name, and (3)  brief tagline/catchphrase ("He gives us life in pictures" or "She gets results" or "Soul seducer" or "Our escort to the future" are examples from Time).  Specifics are better than vagueness, generality, or imprecision, so a time/date/place would make your writing more interesting.  Approach this task seriously or appropriately whimsically.  AND BECOME AN INFLUENTIAL PERSON OF STATURE!

Abigail Voigt
“Leaders, Icons, Artists”
So, what hasn’t she done?

What I have been involved in throughout high school—playing the flute, being a drum major, musicals, fall plays, One Acts, volunteering, higher-level high school courses, youth group, teaching children in a church setting, I consider all matched by Abby Voigt, my best friend since about eighth grade or so. Even more so, she has been involved in art club, and become, I’m almost sure, become an idol for “what to wear” amongst some of our school’s younger and older students alike. She is someone I know so well and respect with an immeasurable capacity of sisterly love. She has done it all, been in at all, and excelled. However, it has not been centered upon “doing it all” for her, as it often has been for myself. I know she has a heart for service, and wishes to succeed because she knows she can, if only she pursues excellence with hard work. I have always been amazed by her capabilities to stay on task, and—more importantly—stay positive. Our journey together through a hectic combination of rigorous coursework and extracurricular activities that involve heavy commitments of time showed me this skill of hers. Our runs home for a two minute dinner, or a five minute relaxing session between events were marked by my complaining and her comments on how to improve the day. Abby is a great example of someone who has continued to live out her faith, accept people as they are, and excel in this world, though its values are often different than her own. I respect her for infinite reasons, and will continue to, always. She has made a difference in so many lives with her years, and I am confident she will continue to do so in her future endeavors.

Mason Bender
An All-Around Champion
By Gallo 2

I never thought I would find myself at a wrestling meet. Nevertheless, I have exceedingly fond memories of the time I have spent watching State Champion wrestler Mr. Mason Bender decimate his opposition, a feat he realized at each of his bouts this year. His brute strength and endless determination truly paid off this year on the mat.

But Mason is a true exemplar because of his equally inspiring actions after the meet is over, the singlet removed, and the trophies stowed away in a pile in his closet. Mason’s fortitude in the classroom—a willpower that has paid off on numerous standardized tests—serves as a model for younger athletes. Of course, Mason is also a man of exceptional faith, a faith I have been blessed to share with him and learn alongside/from him.

Thank you, Mason, for being a true inspiration. I look forward to watching you thrive at Augustana College and wherever else God leads you.

P.S. Please don't beat me up.

Five years ago, a short linebacker rushed into my life and ultimately changed it forever. I first met Trey DeJong in 7th grade during the football season. We immediately saw each other’s similarities which was the foundation our friendship; our differences emulated that foundation evolving our friendship to a brotherhood. Trey and I’s friendship blossomed in middle school and has not ceased into high school.
Mr. DeJong, an avid hunter, loves the games of football and hockey. When the two of us are together one way or another, the topic of one of those sports will come up. We are similar in so many ways that we refer to ourselves as twins. We have the same middle name, we love the same sports, we listen to the same music, we watch the same shows, we laugh at the same jokes, and we get depressed about the same things. We have even sneezed simultaneously, twice. Our differences, the few of them, only enhance our friendship. I love the game of basketball and am good at it, he is bad at it but loves to watch it and to learn about its strategies. He loves to hunt, which I have never done but have always been intrigued about it.
Although we are going our separate ways for higher education, Trey will permanently be a life-long friend. I will visit him constantly during our days at college. I will always look up to him and he will be in my life and heart forever. I can only hope that in the near and distant future that he will learn about this message I have written upon this blog and not only agree, but return my thoughts and feelings of our friendship brotherhood.

Big guy, bigger heart.

This is Spencer Smith, my drumline brother since day one.

When he moved to the Brandon Valley school district in seventh grade, his crazy curly hair and ever-present smile gained him countless friends. After years of tolerating my strict attention to responsibility, he has been the perfect counterpart to my seriousness while still accomplishing great feats. Spencer’s wit and desire for fun has helped make my years in drumline unforgettable. I have oodles of respect for this young man, as it is no easy task to embrace drumming in a snare line with four other girls—and three of the four were freshman. He has endured much adversity and humbly accepted my leadership as drumline section leader… but has also received the well-deserved honor of Groove Winter Line section leader and seeing his name posted as a snare player for the Oklahoma drumline, a dream of Spencer’s that has finally been realized. Indubitably, I am incredibly proud of my Boomer Sooner as he eagerly awaits his future.

Cha Ching its Cha$$

Chase Marso was one of those guys I did not have the pleasure of getting to know the first ten years of my time in the Brandon Valley School District. I did not play basketball or football, and was not involved in FCA until my junior year. But at some point during my junior year of high school I was given the privilege to be around the All-American persona that is Chase Marso. I could honestly care less about his successes on the court or the football field. It is his success in the classroom and his devotion to being a good friend, teammate, and citizen that makes Marso a spectacular human being and the type of guy I would want my kids to look up to. Chase’s determination to consistently achieve excellence makes him a great person to be around—whether it is ping pong in his basement or lab days in AP Chemistry. Cha$$ will undoubtedly be a titan in anything he pursues in life.

Optimism that rejuvenates us all

By Blake Story

Alex has proved himself to be a leader numerous times throughout the years I have known him. Many powerful initiators can be easily corrupted and be lead astray by the nefarious subconscious that lays within us all. He brings about a new sense of optimism into any classroom and work environment. He contains optimism that rejuvenates us all. He takes the lead when others don’t know what to say, act, or show upon to others no matter the situation. Some will find this matter to be incredibly difficult while Alex handles the situations with immediate action and care.
Any one person who stands out as a leader and is very social-friendly will be the outcome of an exceptional person in whatever career they chose. Any college would be privileged with Alex’s presence around campus. He deserves the opportunities that will be given to him in the future as he will clench them in his fist and prevail over any challenges. Success and astonishment erupt in his mind as the world will come to see.

Amy Steffen
“Artist, Icon, Leader”
An All-Around Winner

One person I have always been friends with but became exceedingly close this year is Amy Steffen. Although I have always considered Amy to be exceptionally smart and dedicated, I did not realize the extent of her abilities till Intro to Literature. Amy’s poem writing skills are admirable and inspiring. I have learned a great deal by just reading her work. She truly shocks me with her profound poems about real life dilemmas and concerns. If anyone has not observed these unbelievable poems, I insist you make this your top priority.

Along with her intellect, Amy is an incredible icon. Amy has had two surgeries on her knee in the past seven months during the school year. I get the flu during the school year and I feel like I’m dying. I cannot imagine going through two surgeries during the school year and still maintaining a 4.0 grade average. This is a feat I would not be able to accomplish and I commend her on this.

Amy’s leadership skills are immaculate. Amy works at Avera Prince of Peace and lifeguards during the summer. The patience and leadership skills it takes to work with old people everyday stuns me. You are even able to trust her with your life when you are swimming at the Brandon pool! Amy even desires to become an orthopedic surgeon! If this does not scream “Leader” I do not know what will.
I have known Amy for a very long time. I am very amazed and proud of the person she has become. Amy truly is an all-around winner from intellect to the type of person she has become. If you do not know Amy well, I advise you to start talking to her, you will not be disappointed!

Innovator
Maggie Elizabeth Grapevine and Katie Elizabeth Redford (Organized by mothers’ maiden names: Carstensen and Weber, respectively)
“Lovers of Blue”

Throughout all of life’s endeavors, Maggie and Katie (collectively Kaggie) approach their dilemmas through comedy and inspiring language—encouraging me with metaphors like “She grew on him like E. coli on room temperature ground beef” and “the red brick wall was the colour of a brick-red crayon.” From a young age, these two dames have been with me. I have had the opportunity to see these two young women grow as the world changed around them—while never compromising their moral values. In times of personal travesty and private humiliation, Kaggie has been the salvation that pulls me from the depths.

In addition to assisting with my goals, they have achieved their own aspirations. Maggie is the most profound and prominent writer yet humble writer Brandon Valley has ever seen. Her reading speed surmounts all and her intelligence returns more than just a wealth of grades. The test scores that Maggie reluctantly presents are much higher than any so-called “scholars” at our school. She knows what to say and innovates jokes that are unseen among others of her prowess. Maggie is truly amazing but is much too humbled to show it. Ms. Grapevine knows each and every aspect of literature and social science yet excuses herself from social criticism—a wise move indeed.

Katie, on the other hand, has achieved more than she could ever imagine. A social butterfly, Katie is more than a cliché. She is her own person with an excellent selection is music—such as Rick Astley’s “Never Gonna Give You Up,” one of my all-time favorites. She also believes in fairness and equity for others and is incredibly morally and socially correct. In addition to her flowering social qualities, she also possesses unmatched intellectual quality. Anyone can do well in secondary school, yet Katie has gone above and beyond that and has achieved a level in the fourth standard deviation of scholars. Yet it is not her intelligence that makes her exceptional, but her ability to balance the arts, work, volunteering, school and an active nightlife.

All in all, Kaggie is someone who makes Brandon Valley one of the most exceptional places in the universe—and I am glad I live in no universe parallel.

Haydn Heisel
A True Man Scout

A plethora of skills is necessary to be considered “Awesome.” Haydn has all of these skills. Whether he is passing tests in AP Chem (a tought feat, indeed,) conjuring up new economic policies, or “powning” people in political debates, Haydn absolutely excels at all he does. Among Haydn’s vast set of skills reside a handful of valuable, yet not-so-typical skills. For instance, Haydn has been known to single-handedly take over Ultimate Frisbee games, regularly surpass 10,000,000,000 points on DDR, and create fires amidst the most unfavorable of conditions. Haydn was once so “on fire” during a mid-season Yball game that he had all the fans out of their seats chanting his infamous jersey number. It was an epic moment for the Dirty ½ Dozen. Haydn has frequently been quoted, describing his skills as merely “useless.” I feel that unique is a better word. And, unique is what we need in this conforming society. Haydn’s unique skills stem from his attractive personality that captivates anyone in proximity. I believe that there is a lot this world can learn from the way Haydn handles himself and his peers. I have neglected to mention Haydn’s most admiring skill. In a world engulfed with technology and other distractions, few people possess the crucial ability to listen. I have been good friends with Haydn since my first years in SoDak, and I have found there to be no better person to talk to than Haydn Heisel. As we all know, sometimes life can throw you lemons, but Haydn will help you turn those lemons into a delicious, tangy lemon pudding, or perhaps a zesty lemon meringue pie. Haydn has time and time again proven himself to be a true leader and confidant. Without exemplary people like Haydn,” Bro Time” would cease to exist. Sure this ode is filled with inside jokes and references, but people like Haydn make those happen. For all that Haydn Heisel has done and will continue to do in his life, we thank you.

Haydn does have one flaw, however. He just lost the game.

The Sean Rollag
Genius, Titan
Farmer of Strength, Knowledge, Manliness, and Corn

Van Ede, 5

If something is important, Sean knows about it. Correction—Sean knows everything about it.
Me: "Hey, Sean! How'd the AP Chem test go?"
Sean: "It was pretty easy."
Normal Person Response: "I hope I at least got one right."

Sean's brilliance extends beyond simple scholastic achievement. Contrary to many of his fellow high achievers, Sean maintains a scientific curiosity lost to many others—including myself until a short time ago. In fact, my own renewal in pursuing scientific research and discovery owes itself completely to Sean. Sean's brain absorbs knowledge like his blue ribbon crops soak up water. He is constantly recommending me books—unfortunately, at a much faster pace than I am able to read them. Sean's prowess for math and natural talent for the sciences remains the envy of many the high school and college student. In fact, with all the AP and college credits Sean has accumulated over his outstanding career he will enter college as a sophomore—wow. I, as well as many others, owe Sean a huge debt of gratitude. Through Sean's guidance, my interest and appetite for science has grown as high as the cornfields on the fourth of July. And that's more than knee high when it comes to the Rollag plantation.

The yields of Sean's mind are equal to those of his practical skills and brute strength. Stranded on a remote island with one choice of companion, Sean Rollag would be my number one pick. Sorry, Bear Grylls, but compared to Sean, you'd be more helpful as fish bait. I once witnessed Sean dig 2 by 6 by 3ft hole in limited time through dirt, clay and solid rock! With the strength of ten tractors and the precision of a biochemist, many have observed Sean's skill as a discus thrower and craftsmanship as a welder.

I am confident Sean will go on to discover great things. When it comes to truly discovering Higgs Boson, I imagine Sean having a conversation similar to that in the film Taken:

"I have a very particular set of skills; skills I have acquired over a very long career...Skills that make me a nightmare for [Bosons] like you. I will look for you, I will find you, and I will kill you."

Maybe not the "kill" part, but if so, this would be no problem for Sean. As referenced before, he can dig a mean grave in no time.

Leaping over Barriers

While working the middle school track meet long jump this afternoon, I was privileged to witness an 8th grader from Harrisburg, whose name I learned only from the cheers of teammates AND COMPETITORS (who cared enough to remember this individual from other meets). While working the jump pit, I could not help but notice the only student who watched all jumpers take their turns before his name was finally called 3 times in the 8th grade boys flight. Though he is physically disabled, this young athlete refused to allow his complication to stand in his way.

As Zach glided down the runway, applause rained for each attempt. All three jumps were magnificent, and he was deservingly congratulated by teammates, competitors, and his parents--who waited to encourage and coach him after every jump.

Zach reminded me of multiple reasons why I love the innocence of pure sports. First, they allowed this student-athlete to experience middle school to the fullest, in the same manner his teammates do. Also, he was able to use this opportunity as a challenge to himself, one he overcomes with each jump. Zach showed that despite the adversity one faces, enough courage enables to do truly anything. Finally, I have played in state championship games and experienced much other success, but the smile on Zach's face after each vault rivaled any emotion I have ever felt.

I congratulate you Zach for your efforts today, this spring, and in life. You are truly an inspiration to all who see you.

Joe Sandavol
Dark Hair and a Golden Heart
Joe’s accomplishments on the football field are immense. He is not only all conference but all state as well. He was leader on both the offense and the defense and was a large reason practice ran smoothly. Joe was the definition of going hard. He embraced the daily grind of practice and the rewards it brought every Friday night. He deserves all the recognition in the world for his football prowess, but that’s not why I’m writing about him. This was my first year of football. I was told I was going to be an offensive lineman, not a position I had planned on playing. Not only was I way undersized with no clue how to block, I didn’t really know anyone on the line. I was scared, scared that I would be miserable with no friends during practice. I was scared that I would suck and let down the line, the team, and the school. That is where Joe came in. I was a left guard and Joe was our left tackle. Joe made me feel welcome. Joe showed me how to block and encouraged me when I screwed up, which was often. Joe helped me during games, calmed me down when I was mad, joked with me blocked with me, and most importantly protected Chase with me. His simple acts of kindness calmed my nerves and helped me learn football. Joe can be a scary guy to those that don’t know him. He stands about 6’4, 215 pounds, with about two feet of hair trailing him. Underneath his Metallica cutoffs and thick chest is lodged a heart of gold.

Trey Etrheim
"He Turns Up"

Six years ago, a skinny kid changed my life. Odd last name, odd physique, perfect buddy.

Trey Etrheim, or Tre, is an underappreciated, resilient individual. During the football season his ability was often overshadowed because he was a back-up safety to All-State players Matt VandeBerg and Tony Tripp. On top of that he was a tight end back-up to future Augustana recruit Nate Winter. Although extremely unfortunate, Tre showed his patience and maturity by continuing to work hard during the season and the off-season. His leadership and presence was gave the team comfort knowing we had an exemplary athlete capable of filling in for whatever role we needed him to fill.

Tre is also an extraordinary student with a meticulous mind. Like sports, Tre is often underrated when in fact he is one of the hardest working, intelligent students in the school district. He takes his academics as serious as he takes his ping pong—which is pretty serious.

His athletic prowess and academic excellence however is no match for the capacity of his friendship. Although he is sometimes cold, and sometimes pessimistic, Tre is entirely real. He will tell you exactly what he thinks and that is something that not many people do in today’s world. Knowing that, these moments of coldness just make the moments of warmth that much better because I know they are true and I know they are totally real. I want to thank Tre for always being real and always turning up in this dangerous world. Thank you Tre for letting me eat all your twinkies, drink all your Gatorade, come over randomly, go on stupid adventures, play ping pong until total collapse, and being an awesome friend.

Because of Trey, I have been changed for the better. I am better when he is near. Thanks, pal. If we were in Blades of Glory I would be Jimmy MacElroy and you could be Chaz Michael Michaels, that’s how much you mean to me.

Bringing the Peace

As everyone knows, Malle has an astounding voice. Aside from that though, her compassion for people is limitless. This year she had a chance to go to Haiti in order to better serve people. Malle’s involvement in her church played a big role in this opportunity. She enjoys using her knowledge of Christ to teach others. As she was in Haiti, one thing Malle achieved was being able to give glasses to the underprivileged. She enjoyed being able to communicate with this community of people and hearing about their life. Malle is a great listener. One event she talked about was how, as she was checking their eyes, they sat and told her about different events that had occurred in their lives, even the simple things. Being the young lady she is, Malle sat and listened. One of life’s most charitable characteristics is the ability to be understanding, and in my opinion, Malle was gifted with that ability. Because she shares a simple smile in the hallway, Malle helps bring the peace.

Laughter Soothes the Soul

At first glance Adam Kirkus is a stereotypical teenage boy who laughs at silly things and finds anyway possible to poke fun at unsuspecting targets and still his taunting feels harmless due to his delicate concern for wellbeing of his victims. It ceases to astound me how one person can understand others at such depth without ever having a conversation when walls are dropped and barricades subsided—truly, this is an art. Too many times I have found myself irritated and closed up. Often I miss out on the giggles and little smirks because I fail to move past my sour mood.

People tend to shy away when others are feeling blue or particularly crabby but Adam has a very different approach. Adam knows what makes people laugh. He knows how to break down barriers and dismantle defenses and he does not stop there for even when jokes do not work, he cares. I have never experienced a person that keeps so strong with brightening someone’s day. To such a wide variety of people he brings joy and hope. He listens when you speak but be careful—he might tease you later!

Adam is the bird chirping in the morning that gets over looked because the sun is so bright. I know I take his constant jokes, one liners and goofy threats of tickling for granted. I know that I often allow his refreshing presence to be over shadowed by the worries in front of my face. For your never failing perseverance, for your always bright smile and goofy comments, for your everlasting impressions of laughter and sunshine, I thank you. Thank you for your wonderfully created masterpiece highlighting simple bliss and common delights. May you forever soothe the souls of the troubled with your wonderful gift of laughter and compassion.

"International Man of Mystery"

There are several words one could use to describe Jacob: witty, sarcastic, snarky, snappy. Basically, a lot of words that start with the letter "s". Jacob Schwint has been my acquaintance for a number of years, starting when we were young, and even at that point in life, I knew he was different. I have had many friends over the years, but none like Mr. Schwint. Jacob has been there for me throughout the years, even when other friends were not. Jacob has held a number of positions in my life, from my dearest friend to my not-so-helpful housekeeper, always original and witty, keeping spirits up. From drawing really odd pictures of people, to watching The Real Housewives of New Jersey, Jacob is always able to put a positive spin on the day. He has a sarcastic, almost demeaning manner, and while you think he's being mean, you realize, no, he's just being Jacob.

The best part of having Jacob around is that your spirits are never down. Even though he seems kind of uncaring and unemotional on the outside, he's always there to tell you jokes and play video games with you, and to just help you feel better. Even if Jacob has not discovered a new planted, or solved one of those impossible math problems, he has done so much in his own way, and has truly changed the lives of all he knows. Mr. Schwint has created such a positive, funny outlook on the world that all can draw inspiration from. He is one of the greatest friends anyone could ever ask for, and I really believe that Jacob Schwint is a Leader, one who will change the world in his own special way.

Malle Stephens
Catagory: Artist Pioneer Titan
Forging the way through music and kindness

Malle Stephens is the epitome or caring. While most seniors are only worried about not missing too many days of school so that they do not need to take semester tests, Malle voluntarily takes over a week hiatus from the difficult classes she cares so much about to travel to Haiti only to help others. If you were to ask her, this outstanding student would be more than pleased to tell you all about her adventure to Haiti and the assistance she provided them. Going for this trip, she knew that she would need to make up multiple assignments and would be forced to take semester tests in the spring, but that did not stop her. Not only did she go to Haiti, but she has plans to go to Ethiopia and many other third world countries to be of any assistance that she can. Anyone going into a major that will eventually allow them to be a missionary all over the world must have a heart of gold.
Not only does Malle partake in many activities and assistance programs outside of school, or even outside of the country, she became extremely involved in the high school she has called her home for four years. Her voice is beyond extraordinary and she is definitely not a tyro on the stage. Aside from the extra-curricular activities participated in, she would be more than willing to help anyone being bullied in the hallway. Malle is not afraid to stand up for herself or anyone else around her. She does not care what others think of her and only does what is best for her and her peers. Anyone looking for a good role model should look no further than Malle Stephens.

A True Role Model For All

I’ve known Kara Shroll for as long as I can remember. From popping balloons with our butts at my 2nd grade birthday, being lunch buddies warming up our cookies (which we still have to try to toast one) to this year’s English class, Kara has been there for me through it all. Although we’ve never been extremely close friends, I know Kara would do anything for me. Whenever I’m having a rough day, Kara’s smile and kind words always cheer me up. But, this year Kara did not tryout for the soccer team and unfortunately, Kara was not our goalie. Even though I missed her on the field, always cheering me on, I respect the decision she made and I am proud of everything she has accomplished. In the classroom, I get distracted easily. Most of the time I’m very sarcastic, but Kara has always kept me on track and motivated me to succeed. I cannot think of one negative memory I have with her. Although she will be attending Augustana College next year and I will be four hours away at St. Cloud State, I will be forever grateful for my role model, Kara Shroll.

This past year, she, along with the whole soccer team, were faced with a difficult situation. Her admirable ability to play soccer before the injury was indescribable but the almost more impressive thing was her reaction to this disaster. I am writing my ode to Amy Steffen because she was truly an inspiration to me. Her immeasurable courage to continue to inspire her team despite her conflict is truly inspirational. I will continue to admire her courage and bravery throughout the years and look up to the one who was been there from the beginning.

As most of you can tell, Logan's personality is unmatched by anyone. But what some of you do not realize is that she has the most amazing work ethic I have ever seen. Logan's ability to work hard and the results she acquires never ceases to amaze me. She is truly my idol. Along with being completely inspiring, her laughter is what really gets to me. It is that genuine, contagious kind that makes you want to laugh with her even when you do not know the joke! I can always count on Logan to make my day better and brighter. I hope one day I can channel her energy and make someone else's day as well.

Logan will be attending USF in the fall for nursing and I will be three hours away in Rochester. Although I will be sad not to see her beautiful face everyday, I guarentee I will still be able to hear her giggle all those miles away! (How's that for poetry Logan!)

Meggin Robertson is by far one of the most talented people that I know. She can fashion an amazing sculpture out of a mere wad of chicken wire and have it tell a story all its own. Her artistic ability is one that if you were to look at some of her paintings and prints, they would scream talent. In addition to her amazing artistry, somehow she manages to perpetuate a sarcastic yet jovial attitude about life, despite all of the pitfalls and obstacles that she has overcome, or still has to fight. Her witty jokes and random comments make class more enjoyable and her snappy comebacks can be a little too entertaining (slightly disruptive). However, among all of the sassy remarks and witticisms, she also takes the time to really listen. I don’t know how many times I’ve felt like I can’t really talk to anybody because I feel like I can’t trust them. With Meggin, it’s different. I truly think that if you need someone to lend an ear, Meggin is the one to go to, because she is willing to listen and will help you overcome any sort of difficulty you may have. Meggin is truly an a amazing person.

I have had the pleasure of knowing Megan Forster since the 6th grade. We first became acquainted in Mr. Berg’s science class, and my earliest memory of Megan was seeing her wildly curly hair. (And being jealous of it, naturally, as I have always yearned for curly hair) Even six and a half years ago, Megan was extremely smart and hardworking, as we all know her to be today. Megan is a person who epitomizes dedication. No matter what the activity is, Megan always gives her best effort and puts forth 110%. She strives for success in all aspects of her life, and it shows. Megan’s successes would be less meaningful, however, if not for her pleasant personality. Megan is always very friendly and motherly toward all. This “mothering” has earned her a mom-related nickname amongst many of the kids from the theater department. I have no doubt that she will be a great mother to her own children someday, because she is focused, talented, smart, and caring. (Earning her the “virtuosity” label depicted in the title) Megan has big goals for her future, and her first step toward achieving this is to attend Vassar College in New York in the fall. I do not have a question in my mind that Megan will reach enormous success at Vassar and in all she does, because striving for success is what Megan Forster know and does best.

Positive. Encouraging. True. The list goes on of the strong and great influence Alex Rogen brings not only to the senior class, but the school. There is no question about why this magnificent role model was elected homecoming king. His loud and enthusiastic praise of all of the sports teams along with his humorous supporting acts in plays make him the prime example of what a student should try to emulate. He cares about the student body as a whole, without caring about other peoples’ opinions. Alex Rogen has embraced the school’s mottos of “Less Talk, More Walk” and “Never Satisfied.” To say I look up to Alex is an understatement.
Alex possesses the ability to make even the worst day into a positive experience. I have no doubt that he will make it big, pursuing his dreams and influencing the lives of many people in a great way. Rogen will be able to go anywhere he wishes with the drive and perseverance that he embodies. I thank God for putting this tremendous person into my life as a teammate, a friend, and a person that I can truly look up to. Alex Rogen is, without a doubt, leading the herd to better pastures.

Leader, Icon, Scholar, Future Husband
"Oh, hot damn. It's Stephen."

Glorious. Masterful. Soul seducer. Stephen Bakke is all of the above and more. From the time I met him in DEAR (back when that was a thing), Stephen has always proved himself to be a hard worker, a perfectionist, and a loyal friend. Though cynical at times, Stephen's intelligence shines (bright like a diamond) through any obstacle; there is nothing he can not accomplish. Often, he does not get the credit he deserves, but not even discredit could deter Stephen from persevering. He is, without a doubt, going to rule the world someday.
Thank you, Stephen, for making these halcyon years so fond in my memory. I love you. So. Much.

Ellie Minihan
“Cowgirl Confidant “
Living Life to the Fullest

Ellie Minihan has been more than a friend to me; she’s been an eye opener. Somehow, she pushes the envelope without crossing the line, a quality which I greatly admire and covet. Because of her encouragement, I tried out for the musical and I not only had a blast, but I met many friends who I normally wouldn’t have the opportunity to meet. The musical was a high school experience I am so thankful for and I may not have considered it without the enthusiasm of this wild cowgirl. One day as we were tailgating out late at Dairy Queen on a school night—crazy I know!—Ellie told me of the numerous times she would go swimming in the Big Sioux long after dark. Once she loaded up a giant raft and hauled it down to the river in the truck with her sister. Realizing the intentions of these two wild chicas, a police officer followed them to McCardy Park where he condescendingly asked, “You’re not going to go rafting now, are you?” to which Ellie replied, “YUP! We are!” Her fearless strong will and confidence will take her far in life.
Her contagious laugh and mischievous smile makes everyone around her want to be in on the joke she seems to be amused with. The wonderful thing about Ellie is…she lets you. Without judging or a second’s hesitation, Ellie will include anyone and everyone. She cares. We once went to a Stampede Hockey game and she bought 10 tickets out of her own pocket, so that the spectators could pay her back on arrival. Most did, and some didn’t. The point is, Ellie chooses to give the benefit of the doubt. Many people make others earn their trust before giving it; Ellie gives it freely (though not blindly), allowing individuals the opportunity to prove they deserve it. If you have the opportunity to know her, you are truly blessed. Ellie Minihan, I am so thankful I have had the pleasure to know you and call you my friend. You have shown me how to take advantage of every opportunity to truly experience life, not live life on autopilot. Whether you know it or not, you have made a huge impact on my senior year and, of course, my life. I love you Ms. Minihan!

Taylor Hanzel
Leading the Future

Taylor has been involved with teaching and volunteering as long as I have known her. She is always a positive influence and people are drawn to her. Taylor does not complain about teaching her Sunday school class; she loves her students. Working hard on assignments and studying for test, Taylor is the kind of student I wish I could be. She is not afraid to take charge of projects and put everything she has into them. Pizza Ranch has been Taylor's work for a long time. If you ask friends and co-workers, anyone would find that Taylor is a dedicated worker. She works almost every day a week and yet keeps up her grades. Taylor is also a great friend. She has been there for me and others during highs and lows. I am looking forward to rooming with her at Augie next year. I know she will do great things.

Chase Marso
"Leader, Truster"
The Man.

Chase Marso is one of those that can singlehandedly disprove all of the stereotypes saying that a jock must be a dumb student. He is far above any sort of academic standard that the stereotype would suggest. Being done with his college math credits while still in high school is a crazy thing to fathom.

Although, I believe some of the best decisions aren't made in the classroom. His hardwork and dedication to fight through certain obstacles is an inspiring story to all.

I best got to know Chase in our times on the football field, whether that be practice or a game. He commands his troops on the Gridiron and was a tremendous reason to allow us to make it to the state championship. He led us to the promise land; although we came up short, he was still commended for his crazy accomplishments by winning the MVP and the Best Back Award.

He is someone that should be commended and remembered at Brandon Valley for years to come because of his hardwork, accomplishments, but yet most of all, his volunteer work. The work he did to help a fallen teammate (Josiah) is remarkable.

For a guy to be able to do all of these things is not easy, but then again, being Chase sure isn't easy.

Clarissa Petersen
Category: Role Model, Sister, Friend
“Big Sister, Big Heart”

Living with four younger brothers is no easy task—this I have learned from a long-time friend of mine: Clarissa Petersen. Through the years, I have witnessed Clarissa bring her brothers to their events, help clean up after them, and of course, stop their “occasional” fights amongst each other. They drive her crazy, but I know, without a doubt, that she would do anything for those boys. The love Clarissa shows for her family is what I have always admired the most about her. Supportive and caring, she constantly displays the qualities of a great big sister. Her sisterly instincts have also appeared in her friendships. Clarissa looks after her friends just as she does with her brothers. In ways, Clarissa is like the older sister I never had (even though she is younger than me)—she comes across bossy at times, but proves she is a person that truly cares. No matter what is going on in her life, she is always willing to go out of her way for a friend in need—a trait that is surely commendable to many.
Clarissa, I have no doubt that you will continue to be there for your brothers, along with those that you are introduced to at Augustana and later on in your life. You have already displayed to many that you are not only an admirable sister, but a true friend.

Clarissa Petersen has been a friend of mine since the first day of middle school. Supporting me in everything I do, she is the friend everyone desires; I have been lucky enough to find her. Not very vocal, Clarissa and her ideas often go unnoticed in and out of the classroom. Clarissa is a very insightful individual who deserves an acknowledgement for all of her hard work and dedication to her school, friends, family, and local organizations. I will be forever grateful for the positive influences this wonderful woman has had and will continue to have on my life. I look forward to what our future holds as we continue our educational journey together at Augustana College.

Just keep looking forward

At first, I did not want to write my shout out to Matt, but how could I not? Matt is not only my boyfriend, but he is also my best friend. I met Matt through track my sophomore year. It was hard not to notice him, with his accomplishments and attitudes. We never spoke a word to each other, until state track. I desperately needed something to eat, and luckily, Matt had snickers! To my surprise, he told me no and left. A week later I was at my dad's house, and I found a snickers bar in his fridge. I quickly got to my phone and text Matt. From then on, we never stopped talking. I still can't believe that I met such an amazing guy. Matt has accomplished so many things in a short amount of time. This guy has gotten a full ride to the University of Iowa to play football. He is in college classes which make my head spin. Matt has a bright future ahead of him and he will be using all of the resources given to him to complete what he wants. I wish the best for him because whether I like it or not, he has had a huge impact on my life, if not many others. He is able to talk to anyone about almost everything and it flows. Matt is an incredible person and he is going places in the future.

Dillon Dutson
"One Who Sees All"

By: Abigail Voigt

I truly began to know Mr. Dillon Dutson my sophomore year of high school. He was in several of my classes and I found him very agreeable and easy to talk and share laughs with. It was not long, and I soon considered Dillon to be one of my closest friends. Our junior year, Dillon and I shared a very similar class schedule which meant that he had to put up with my antics for most of his day. I treasure that year of high school and that daily routine because Dillon and I never failed to have a good time no matter how uninteresting school seemed.

I have always and forever will be impressed with the characteristics that Dillon posseses. First of all, Dillon is one of the most hard-working individuals I know. He has sacrificed much time to his several jobs and has proved himself to be a very dedicated and loyal employee. I admire his work ethic. Furthermore, among other gifts, Dillon has the rare ability to be incredibly perceptive to others emotions or feelings. All you have to do is walk up to him, and he can read you like a book. He sees you, as well as situations as they are. He sees it all. I have always appreaciated his ability to not only listen, but give advice. Not only that, but his advice is true and unbiased. And, I am very thankful for the countless times he has done just that for me.

This past year has been busy, and I am regretful that I did not get to spend as much time or have as many classes with Dillon as I have in years past. But, I cherish deeply the memories and the time I have been blessed to know him. Next year, Dillon will be venturing far away to assist people in the country of Brazil. I have no doubt that he will steal the hearts of the Brazilian people, just as he has stolen mine. I will miss Dillon greatly, but I know that God has great plans for him that I cannot wait to witness (even if from afar). My life has been changed for the better by Mr. Dillon Dutson.

"Kay, cool, awesome, killed it, nailed it... obviously."

Shannon Coyle
“Artist, Friend, Sister for all Intents and Purposes”
Shannon Coyle. What comes to mind and the mentioning of that name? Her face, her laugh, or maybe her voice. For me, all of these and more. Shannon has been one of my best friends since freshman year. She was one of the first to accept me into this new school, and over the years we have just grown closer. I honestly consider her a sister and will miss her exponentially when we part for college.
She may be silent on most occasions, but with the proper topic and an adequate amout of Mountain Dew, Shannon can become an outspoken and passionate person. She feels very strongly about many things and knows that in my company she can say whatever is on her mind. This is the Shannon I wish everyone could see. The Shannon who tells you how it is and does not hold back. She has such a big heart (This is a requirement if one is to have 5 younger sisters.), and always puts others before herself. I sincerley love Shannon with all my heart. For all her quirks, she is my friend, my confidant, and my sister.

Nicole Peterson
Running the race of life
Nicole not only runs races, but also runs through life like a titan. As a hardworking student, she works hard in creating an organized and successful life. Miss Peterson, who ironically shares the same last name as me, has grades and successes to prove her diligent work. Being able to a part of cross country all four years of her high school career and even run in her off seasons has shown me her dedication. I remember when we went to her lake cabin, her running shoes were brought along for her daily run. I would have to say that in school and sports she wants the best and strives for it.
Sometimes, people see Nicole and think, wow she is very quiet and timid. But this year during English, she emerged herself into lectures and class discussion much more than she has before. She is a titan for her kind and I fully respect her for that. Another reason I admire her is the notes she took. If I had that kind of patience to find that many notes, I would have talked even more than I had. I was very overjoyed with she shared all her knowledge with the class.
I also wanted to add in a part about her personality. Nicole has been an amazing friend. Sometimes, I just do not quit talking and she just listens and says what she needs to after. I have no idea how she has that patience. I am so blessed to be able to room with her next year and hope the best for her future.

Ker-HAHA: A tribute to Kara Shroll
“An all-around great gal”
By: Myrlie 2 and Redford 7

The leadership abilities that Kara Shroll possesses are unmatched by any other student in Brandon Valley. Drum line has been her main outlet to let her role of leadership shine. For the majority of her high school career the drum line has consisted mainly of guys with raging hormones. When we loosened our concentration and started to slack, Kara brought us all back in focus to see the real prize. Through drum line, Kara has taught me that one does not always need to receive a medal or award, but the prize that will always be treasured most is knowing that the full effort was put forth.

However, Kara’s skills exceed for beyond drum line. Her astounding academic success has been admired by all of her peers. Not only has her success in this field been recognized by her classmates, but it has also by the administration. She has received several very high honor awards. She was one of the few choosen to represent Brandon Valley at a luncheon in Pierre to meet the Governor. At this event she acted with grace and dignity to do her best to show other high achievers of the state that Brandon Valley is populated by amazing people. Her loyalty to school work is unparalleled by some of the other brightest students of this school.

On a less serious matter, she also has a sense of humor that everyone finds delightful and witty. This sense of humor reveals itself wonderfully in Mr. Anderson’s tragedies class. Though she always diligently pays attention and gives her classmates the proper respect, she will also liven up the class a bit for those around her. On days when we are in the lab, she does her work as well as makes jokes. She humbly tries to deny any attention to her—such as when we put pictures of her in our powerpoints. She is very modest and caring. A remarkable person if ever there was one.

The Tyler Tew

On several occasions being near enemies, Tyler and I have remained good friends throughout high school. Known for his eccentric personality and unique sense of humor, people are drawn to Tyler the instant they meet him. Mr. Tew has encouraged me to learn a great many things, via trying to prove his invalid theories wrong. He has taught me even more about humility when his invalid theories turn out to be correct.

Although witty and somewhat giggly at times, Tyler is also a dedicated worker. In the past four years, he has put more time into his various occupations than anyone else I know. Also, over the past year, Tyler has trained and devoted time to his future occupation as a crypto logical linguist in the air force.

Even though I enjoy giving Tyler a hard time—when he first told me he wanted to be the air force photographer, I responded by saying that I would join him as the air force magician, I consider him one of my best friends and wish him the best of luck in his future endeavors. Keep up the hard work, bro.

Haley Ullom
“Artist and Friend”
She puts the sax in saxy.

I have known Haley for several years now but it was not until this year that I really began to see who she is. A cool chick that plays a mean saxophone, loves to have fun, and is ready to be a friend at a moment’s notice. Whether it is a late night of watching movies, being driven insane trying to accomplish an English project, or doing Chinese fire drills at 2 in the morning there is no limit to the fun that follows in her wake. You can rest assured known that when you want to party she will be there to knock your socks off. Her involvement extends into the realm of school as well, washing that man out of her hair as a nurse, drinking milk that taste like it could kill you for FFA, or just rocking out on her sax, she has become quite valuable to the place known as BVHS. After she has put away the Sax, put the milk in the fridge, and put away the dog tags she is still ready to be a friend. No matter the problem, whatever the price and whenever she is needed Haley is there, ready to do the thing she excels at the best: be a friend. I rest assured known the next time I find myself running from a train I can look to my side and she her there every step of the way. I am truly grateful to know Haley Ullom and I just hope the world is ready, for when she joins the party that is life the dance floor will never be the same again.

“He is a Secret Softy”

Clay Lippert has merely been my acquaintance these many years. This year, thankfully, we were placed in a few classes together. A fast friendship started and has been growing since. I must admit, what I learned and am learning about him surprise me. He is not just the astounding student many of you know him to be. He is much more. The words to describe his personality are endless: smart, intelligent, insightful, witty, caring, sincere. I could keep going. Over the past few months, Clay has proven to be much more compassionate than I thought him to be. If there is any sign of unhappiness, he will walk up and say, “You seem downtrodden. What’s wrong?” It is great knowing that he always has your back. Despite any thoughts of his pessimistic exterior—he cares. I mean, can someone who teaches a bunch of little ones in a Sunday School Class be that bad? Course not. It has been truly great to get to know the real Clay Lippert and I look forward to getting to know more. I must speak the truth about Mr. Lippert and tell you all… he is a secret softy. Shhh

Katie Redford is not only one of the most intelligent intellectual I know, she is also an amazing actor, friend, and a roll model. I had the opportunity to get fairly close to her at the beginning of this year and I have noticed some great qualities about her. First off, she is a fantastic actor. She is NEVER worried about embarrassing herself or being the “fool”. In fact, I think she loves doing it. I believe that is a quality many young girls go without these days. Sadly. Another wonderful thing about Katie is that she will always make time to listen to you. She is understanding and helps to the best of her abilities. And I have seen this not only with me, but with others. There is never a moment where you feel like you cannot trust her and she always has this welcoming quality that makes you want to go and talk, smile, hug, etc with her. Lastly, Katie is a GENIUS. She never brags about it, but you just know how smart she is. It’s good because she is helpful when it comes to schoolwork and studying.

“The A Team”

I have been blessed to be a part of a unique group of individuals I am fortunate to call my friends. We doubted ourselves as a team back in the fifth grade, and in a way have stayed a team ever since that day in the lunchroom. Our A Team consists of Cody Mohlencamp, Zach Flanigan, Jack McCann, and Dylan Tibke. We all possess individual strengths and qualities that make our team so successful. For example, Cody Mohlencamp is one of the strongest guys in the state by placing first in the 220 weight class in power lifting. Zach Flanigan has always been one of the most intelligent individuals I know. Flany’s test taking skills are off the charts for hardly ever studying. You cannot find a nicer guy than Jack McCann. He would drop everything to help out a friend, whenever and wherever. Jack also has an incredible work ethic when it comes to school/sports. Lastly, but not unimportantly, Dylan Tibke. Tibbles has incredible social skills that draw others in with his personality. Tibs has one of the best senses of humor and can always brighten up your day. I know as we grew older we grew apart a little, but never enough to stop being friends. As we go our separate ways I hope we all can stay friends throughout the years to come. Thanks for everything guys.

Role Model
Brian Albertson
“A man of True Character”
5/15/2013

Growing up we are always asked the question of who we want to be. For many it may be a firefighter, or a nurse, or a singer, or an actor. Many times we lose sight of what it actually means to be a role model and how our actions affect those around us. Brian Albertson has “let his light shine”, as sung in the popular children’s song, so that all may see the beautiful talents that he has to offer our world. As a Drum Major I witnessed Brian go above and beyond the call of duty as a section leader. He took every single freshman under his guide and care and he used his “light” to mentor them to encourage them to become upstanding participants in our school community. Brian is the role model I strive to be. He shows compassion for anything and everything he does; with Brian, there is no good enough, he is only satisfied once the job is FULLY completed to the best of his capabilities. This work mentality has served him well on the stage, in the band, in the choir, in his academics, and in his faith. I wish Brian the best of luck with his future for I know he will go far. I want to thank him for showing me how to let my “light shine”, being a great influence in my life, and a great friend. I mean it from the bottom of my heart when I state that I want to grow up to be just like Brian Albertson.

I have known of Kara Shroll for about a year and a half but I have only had the pleasure of personally meeting her within the past nine months. She always seems to be there when you need her. Whether it be finding a ride home from an AP Biology lecture or asking for help with understanding a topic, she is there. Even if you just need someone to vent to Kara always has the time to be there for you. It may seem that many people can have their moments of kindness, but also can have their moments of negativity. Not Kara. Kara manages to always be in a good mood, and can cheer just about anyone up with nothing more than her smile and a few thoughtful words. It is hard to believe that all this greatness is wrapped up in such a small package. Kara cannot possibly fathom how much her kindness has affected me and helped me accomplish my goals. I feel that she will go far in life with her personality and wit. I will be forever grateful to Kara Shroll.

Helpful Heart

I have known Rachel for quite some time now from our common interests; we used to play soccer together way back in middle school and both currently play trumpet. I truly came to know her more during high school since we rarely went a few days without seeing each other due to marching band and/or school classes. Not surprisingly, after all that time together, I soon considered her to be one of my best friends. Our friendship definitely grew stronger as we traveled across the world together on one of the most amazing adventures of my life. She has taught me a lot—about myself and the world—and I am so thankful for her being in my life.

Rachel has several characteristics that I admire but the one I’m most grateful for that she possesses is her unselfish helpfulness. From homework to musicianship to everyday problems, Rachel has helped me. She is not only very helpful to me, but to others as well. During the band season, with her willingness to help and her patience, she could be seen showing the proper technique or reminding the younger students of a correction. Her intent to become a teacher is a reflection of how much she cares for others and is willing to help them. She’s always been there for me and I am very thankful for that. Secondly, Rachel is one of those persons with a rare ability to brighten up someone’s day. I can’t say this about too many people, but I can count on Rachel to always cheer me up. On the occasional days where I am sad, mad, moody, or whatever, she knows something is wrong and will try to help. Her encouragement, wisdom, and advice are deeply treasured.

In the coming future, I know Rachel and I will go our separate ways as we venture off to college; however, I am certain that we will stay in touch. She has a special place in my heart because she’s made such an impact on me. I wish her all the best in her future. It’s time for her to spread her gift of helpfulness to everybody else.

Katie Peterson
Leader
“Dancing behind the scenes”

I’ve known Katie Peterson for as long as I can remember but we have been close friends for only a short time. Even before we became friends, I knew Katie was a dedicated dancer and a zealous leader. This last fall, Katie was named All-Conference, yet at the awards ceremony today she was not recognized. Katie puts more effort into dance than I’ve seen anyone put work into anything. Her talents are proven by her successfully making the SDSU dance team for this coming school year along with the rewards she has received throughout her dance career. Katie was also a team leader, which was shown when she was named team captain. She is busy four to five nights a week with practice with her own team or coaching the younger teams and I don’t understand how she manages it all. It takes a sincerely devoted person to work as hard as she does and not get upset about not getting the credit she definitely deserves.

Not only is Katie an amazing dancer, she is an incredible person. She is extremely outgoing and the most caring person I know. Katie is a true role model to others; she works harder than most and is truly selfless. I’m so thankful to have a friend like her in my life.

Zach Van Ede
Leader, Genius, Friend
Definition of #ZachStatus

Everyone knows Zach’s obvious attribute—his brilliant mind. But what really sets Zach apart from everybody else is his way with people. Zach has the power to change your mood at any time; he just has the personality to make you laugh whenever he feels. His positive attitude becomes contagious whenever you are around him. Zach has the ability to become friends with almost anyone and I am envious of this trait. Zach Van Ede is such a down to earth person. Over the last four years, Zach has spent hundreds of hours volunteering through SALSA (Serve and Learn Student Association) and at the hospitals in Sioux Falls in spite of his already hectic schedule which includes athletics, the play, and band. However, Zach does not volunteer to include it on a résumé that helps him for college or the work force; he volunteers because he truly cares. I commend Zach’s hard work in every aspect of his life. He most definitely goes #ZachStatus. I apologize for my sub par writing as it can in no way demonstrate the impact Zach has left on my life and on the entire Brandon community. I am honored to have been close friends with Zach for the past six years and I only wish his bright future the best of luck.

A special guy comes to mind when writing this ode. I’ve known him since the 3rd grade and no matter what has happened we have stayed great friends. He treats me like family, a real member of his pack. This is the one and only Big Cat, or Jack McCann as he is also known. This great guy has always pushed me, and others, to do better. Whenever Jack is given a goal or task to complete he sees to hit that it gets done. He puts everything he has into it, whether it be pushing himself every day in practice, to helping with work around his house and those that ask for help. He has shown me what hard work can get you, and inspired me to go at every task that I attempt with 110%.
He is a reliable person. I have always been able to count on Jack being there when I needed help. He brings a comicle humor and comic relief into situations as if with no thought. Without his inspiration and help, I would not be the person I am today. I am lucky to have the privilege to be spending my college years with this amazing guy and cannot wait to make future memory’s with one of best friends.

“You’ve got a friend in me”
Shelby Rahn
She is someone who will be nice to EVERYONE. She is one of the best friends I have ever had. You tell her a story one day and reference that story months later, and she remembers. She keeps her friends a priority. People know if they need something from her, they can count on her. Always ready to help someone out no matter what it is, she is admirable.
She moved from Iowa in 8th grade—shy and new to the school. I remember being one of her first friends, but that is not when our friendship truly flourished it was later. Once I got to know her—like most people—her spunky personality was obvious. She joined cross country, meeting and making many friends there, later becoming captain of the team. She participated in track each year, being a manager this year. She is an avid SALSA member doing charity work regularly.
Shelby is definitely known for her loud, crazy outgoing outlook on life. She is able to get along with many kinds of people and is considered a friend to most.
Shelby plans to go back to Iowa for college where she will pursue Occupational Therapy. Anyone who knows Shelby knows she will excel through college wonderfully.
We had a rough patch for a year, we full out hated each other, but we got over it, we grew from it and learned. We are probably better friends because of it—we both can be completely honest with each other without hurting ones’ feelings.
Shelby is a wonderful person inside and out, she would never do anything too intentionally hurt someone.
It is an honor to be her friend.

Chase Marso
"The drive of a champion"
Chase Marso most of you will know from his accomplishments on the field and the court, but that is not the reason he is great in my mind. To me Chase is a scholar beyond any other I have met with a passion for knowledge unlike most. While in Calculus II (as many will tell you the most difficult of the math courses) we were thrown in to the ocean to see if we could swim. I began to struggle I had foolishly assumed that with my intelligence and natural ability the class would be simple. I was wrong. I would have failed and sunk to the bottom but Chase grabbed me and pushed me to swim. He did this by always asking question about the assignment due many days and weeks in the future. His focus and drive on the goal of an A was unequaled and by pure chance I was pulled along for the ride. I have no doubt that had Chase not been there to push me to excel I would never have had the will power to do it myself and may not have passed the class. I think that Chase helped me learn by him asking question that helped me understand the concepts and find the answers. Also without Chase Taylor series would have been the end of my math journey but thanks to Chase they were but a speed bump (a very large speed bump). That is the Chase Marso I see every day in AP Chemistry not he sports giant but the gentlemen scholar and I am thankful to have met him.

Titans
“Ode to ‘Stan Rollberg’”

What is there to say about Sean Rollag? Surely more than he would have to say about himself…or anything for that matter. He is definitely not the most loquacious individual, but he has made significant contributions inside and outside the classroom. From the ring to the books, Sean is humble yet powerful—a true titan of the mind.
To say Sean is smart is an immense understatement. From what I have seen and heard, Sean knows everything about everything. If I need an intelligent and carefully analyzed answer to a question, or simply want to discuss a topic too intellectual for most students, Sean is my go-to guy. I have never met someone as naturally brilliant as him who is so eager to learn and teach others. By being friends with Sean, I have definitely become smarter; I think one could become smarter simply by coming within ten feet of this mental giant. It’s a shame more people don’t have the opportunity to befriend Sean and learn from him. He is not by any means extroverted, and the average person doesn’t just strike up a conversation about quantum physics with a random stranger. If it wasn’t for track, I’m not sure I would have ever met Sean—and if I had, we wouldn’t have been as close as we are now. Sean applies his wisdom and intellect to discus throwing, a sport he is very good at. Sean is incredibly determined and puts in the amount of effort necessary to be a great thrower, although for him, throwing is not an individual sport. Sean supports the entire throwing team and contributes by giving tips and advice to younger, more experienced throwers. It is this selflessness that makes Sean a titan. (Discus throwing is also where the title of this selection is derived, as meet officials can never seem to pronounce/read Sean’s name correctly.)
Sean’s inherently good morality, natural genius, and rugged determination will lead him to great places in life. I sincerely hope many more people have the opportunity to learn from Sean—to take from him what I have over the five years I have known him. It is truly mind-boggling how someone can be so completely…titanic.

The Light at the End of the Tunnel

The first time I met Spencer Heidbrink, I was fairly sure I terrified him. After all, he was quiet and I was quite positive the last thing he wanted on the first day in ap bio was to be stuck in a lab group with loud and obnoxious me. I soon learned there was more to this boy than meets the eye. He is incredibly smart in every single class he takes. Teachers adore him, and for good reason. He works hard and has fun while doing it.
Spencer is also an extremely talented wrestler. He does not receive near the recognition he deserves. Thanks to him, I have discovered how much I enjoy watching the sport.
I quickly learned Spencer's greatest attribute: his extraordinarily loving heart. He strives to always find the best in people, even if they do not deserve it. He is always there to lend a hand or a helpful smile.
Over the past few months, I have had the opportunity to intern with a group of 7th graders down at the middle school. One of my students is Mr. Kyle Heidbrink, Spencer's younger brother. Never in my life have a met a younger sibling who had so many wonderful things to say about their older sibling. The Heidbrink family is truly blessed to have a son as wonderful as Spencer. He is an incredible brother, cousin, son, and grandson.
Over the past year, I have gotten to know Spencer very well. I cannot explain in words how blessed I am to have him in my life. On my darkest of days, he is the light at the end of the tunnel, waiting for me with open arms and a smile to help bring a smile back to my face. He is always there to crack a joke, or just provide a kind word of encouragement in the hall. The thought of having to go to college and leave him behind kills me every second of every day. I know, however, that when I do return home, I will have someone who I love waiting here to welcome me home. Of course, he will have to make the occasional trek down to Sioux City as well to visit me.
So, Spencer, "thank you" will never be enough, I know this is true. I am so thankful to have you in my life. I feel incredibly blessed that God put someone like you into my crazy, hectic life.

Megan Scholten
A True Friend

At eight years old Megan Scholten moved in two doors down from me, however it took being in the same 4th grade class for us to become more than friends. Megan has always been a very easy going and wonderful girl to be around. She takes some time to warm up to people because she is not always ready and open to complete strangers but once she gets to know a person she won’t be anyone other than herself. Megan has always been there for me through anything and everything—when my dog died sophomore year I texted her first to let her know because my puppy was just as much her dog as she was mine; Megan ran down to my house at 9:30 that night in her pajamas just to give me a hug and tell me that everything was going to be okay.

No matter how light or heavy the situation I know I can always go to Megan and she will give me her honest opinion or the honest facts. As cliché as this might sound, I don’t know what I would do without Megan Scholten—she truly is my best friend and I would not be the person that I am today without her. I will always be grateful to her for the last nine years of friendship she has so graciously gifted me with and I will always love her like my sister.

Becka Tripp
Comedian, Scholar, Winner
“From Enemy to Colleague to Friend”

The Enemy:
I thought she hated me. For the longest time, it seemed very clear to me that Becka had no intensions in being friends with me. Try as I might, the attractive seventh grader continued to brutally, but truthfully, point out how “annoying” I was being. The side ways glares, the sassy attitude, the everything. I’m sure she saw it very differently, and I probably took it too personally, but that’s the way life seemed to my middle-school brain.

The Colleague:
Time went on, I grew up. The very annoying middle school Haydn turned into an only slightly annoying Sophomore Haydn. Much of it thanks to Becka. I could always rely on her to give her real opinion. Sometimes the truth hurt, other times it made my confidence sore. Becka became the Simone Cowell of my life. I still had one problem with her though, she didn’t like my jokes.

The Friend:
The more I grow and mature, the better friends I seem to be with Becka. Don’t get me wrong, she can act wild, but she always seems to know the right time for it. She’s still honest, and she can still be sassy, but I find every bit of it refreshing and hilarious! The normal euphemisms and small-talk conversations are thrown out the window, being replaced by real thoughts. I hope wherever I end up, there is always a Becka Tripp to keep me from being an annoying middle school boy.

Becka is one of the greatest inspirations of my life. She is who I rely on for the honest truth and for a good laugh. Her words may seem harsh at times, but they always seem to be helpful in the end. She taught me some hard life-lessons, and has kept me humble. I’ve come to realize she is one of the most caring, thoughtful, wonderful people I will ever meet. (Tell that to seventh grade Haydn!). I am proud to be her friend, and will miss her dearly next year.

P.S. I think she likes my jokes now!

Amanda Peterson
Peacemaker, Servant
“If no one can, Amanda will.”

By Allison Koehn pd. 7

At first glance, I did not think much of Amanda Peterson. Happy and a little shy, Amanda joined the list in my head as an acquaintance I did not particularly intend to associate much more with—I regretfully admit this. However, growing up through middle school and high school I began to notice that joyful smile more and more in my everyday life. Where exactly was I seeing this young woman? Well, she was at practice with me every day for basketball, volleyball, and track and field. Amanda may have not been a player; but she was a team member—the best manager of all time. Up with us at six thirty a.m. practices and working in the coaches’ office hours after players went home became a normal routine for Amanda (along with having to balance schoolwork). Amanda has admitted to me that she has stayed helping the coaches until one in the morning on particular nights just to finish necessary projects and tasks. That is dedication. Doing the job no one else wants to do has become commonplace to her. Did I mention that Amanda has cared for just about every single child of the teaching staff at Brandon Valley? After a long week’s work of stats, book keeping, and homework, Amanda will gladly and graciously babysit the children of staff members so they can take a break. I have wondered—and asked Amanda—when she takes her breaks… Another service Amanda does for others is she spends her free periods in either Mrs. Poppe’s or Ms. Johnson’s classrooms—correcting papers, helping students with labs, organizing files, etc. Every day. I cannot think of one student who would devote so many hours of personal time to helping others when they have mountains of tasks to do themselves; but Amanda does.

After knowing of all of this, you would think Amanda to be worn out, stressed, and grumpy. Wrong. AMANDA IS ALWAYS SMILING. She walks with a light swagger as if she has no care in the world. (If only I could capture her stress free attitude!!) There is no one I would trust more with my life or my child than Miss Peterson. As I have gotten to know her as a friend the past couple years, I realize she is anything but average. A kind heart, an attentive listener, and a caring friend make up Amanda Peterson. She is the most selfless and loyal person I have met my age. Her maturity and patience are fit for an adult. I am so thankful Amanda did not look past me, as I almost did to her. She has become a dear friend who I know I can trust with anything. Amanda’s hard work has paid off by being accepted into the prestigious FAC’s (Family and Consumer Science) program at SDSU. Sought after by several coaches around the area, Amanda chose the SDSU volleyball team to continue her superior managing talents.

I can’t thank Amanda enough for being a friendly face and a daily example of a selfless lifestyle. She has taught me infinite lessons about putting others before herself. Thank you Amanda, you are truly the best!

Megan Callahan
"Mind Bender"

My dear friend Meg, where do I begin?! I knew from freshman year that we would always be friends; I made it official in my time capsule! I could not and would not have chosen a more wonderful being to share my high school years with—and more specifically—my high school art career. We truly started from the bottom, and now we here dawg. Looking back on our early years I remember the self conscious nervous artists we used to be. Maybe those adjectives apply more to me than you—you inspired me then and continue to inspire me to have confidence and be bold in my art and in life. Watching you create three of the most incredible works of art for your feat this year almost made me cry. I am so proud of the artist you have become. Your works make me want to grow as much as I can see in you. Painting the mural in the servery continues to be one of my favorite memories of our time spent together. I’m pretty sure the ghosts in there will agree. I would never have consented to have my senior show with anyone else, and I adore the selfless way we support each other as artists. This connection is true and will last. I respect your opinion and insights into each of my works, and love to offer whatever help I can to you. Beyond the art room, I will always be grateful for the time spent relieving stress by bellowing Bruno Mars and spitting Kanye. I love your family almost as much as mine. Meg, you and Allie have blessed my heart this year by being the best friends a girl could ever ask for. Wholeheartedly and with all of my soul I love you Meg, and I am infinitely thankful for you.

Allie and Emily
The YOLO morning maniacs
If you don’t know Allie Poppenga or Emily Larson and you happen to have a class with them, trust me. You will get to know them. QUICK.
These two wake up everyone first period with their loud voices and echoing laughter. Their constant shenanigans keep the class guessing. Allie and Emily complement each other perfectly, and together they are hilarious. From comparing “ratchet” stories to making weird faces at each other during quiet moments in class, these girls are the living definition of “YOLO.”
It’s really hard to tell what those two will come up with next. I know they will both do great things in life and contribute amazing things to the world. They have made my first period into a better place just by bringing their silliness and their obnoxiousness into Mr. C’s room. I will miss them both, and I expect to hear good things come of both of them.
YOLO.

Allie Poppenga
Friend, Role Model
"The Beautiful 'Ratchet'"

Allie Poppenga is probably the most beautiful person I have had the pleasure to call my friend. As we all know, her long legs, sculpted face, and skinny physic rival that of any well-known supermodel plastered in Vogue, but what I am most envious of is her inner beauty. Allie has been through more than most of us can imagine. High school is a hard time for everyone, but I have yet to meet someone who has fallen as hard as Allie has, only to pick themselves up and rise higher than they ever were before. I cannot even begin to express how much I admire her for knowing exactly who she is and not caring what others think. She makes the term "yolo" seem tame. She will do what makes her happy and will forever stay true to herself, no matter how many disapproving stares she may receive for her wild hair, fuzzy socks, provocative dance moves, or inhuman utterances. I only hope that someday I can be as free and accepting of myself as Allie is. I am forever grateful for being able to witness such a strong, beautiful girl be herself. I consider myself truly lucky to call myself her friend. Allie Poppenga and Emily Larson have succeeded in making my senior year of high school the most memorable, entertaining, and successful year of my life, and I don't think I could ever thank them enough for that.

Tyler Anderson; Category: The reason why this country won't turn into the main setting in One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest.

"Driven beyond all comprehension"

I never had a brother. But Tyler was as close to me as ever. Many of you know Tyler, but I've known him nearly twice as long. And he and I growing up since we were four years old has been a rough road, but a road that has been more enjoyable than with any other person. If you're a senior or in any grade and you have not met this kid, then you need to meet Mr. Anderson. Yes, he can come across harsh and as a right-wing extremist, but let me tell everybody who reads this: Tyler has the best head on his shoulders compared to anybody in the entire region. Since middle school developmental days, I could tell that Tyler was well on his way to greatness. He doesn't even know I'm writing this, but if he did, he would definitely deny it. However, it is true. Tyler is the best senior in this entire class and best young male adult in the entire region.

No, he isn't very studious, and yes he has his moments of outburst and hot-headedness, but he has all of that because society keeps telling him no. But here's the issue. Tyler is going to make everybody whoever denounced him in some way, shape, or form regret their actions. Whether it's administration, teachers, students, or other peers, Tyler will make the naysayers eat their words, vomit the words back up since they're so disappointed in themselves for ever denouncing Tyler, and then re-eat the regurgitated words. (This of course will be inadvertent because Tyler's actions will make the naysayers feel inclined to do so.)

Tyler could drop out of school right now and make more money than the entire senior class combined. He knows what he has to do and finds the way to get it done. He doesn't want to bother with this mundane school work; Tyler wants to achieve something that matters. I stand fully behind Mr. Anderson as he ventures to change the world for the better. He's the "Man I'll Never Be" (song from Boston's 1978 album Don't Look Back) and I love him as the brother I always wanted, but never had. I have more respect for Tyler upon listening to one word he says, than my entire K-12 education.

Kara Anderson
Compassionate friend and hard worker
Definition of softball player--Kara

At the start of freshman year in lynx choir I met Kara. Ever from the get go she had a strong love for the game of softball. Day after day she would come in with new stories of how she skinned up her knee the night before or how she bruised her hind leg because she forget to wear slider shorts. No matter what the story, she has always had high energy for softball. I remember when she put a list of all the things she needed to pack for her big tournament. That list was filled front to back.

Another thing about Kara is that her compassion does not stop with softball, it goes so much further. She is graduating with high honors. She has a passions for excellence and achieving goals. She also has one of the greatest laughs. She could be in the room next to you and you could hear her laugh and know it is her. Kara is such an amazing and positive gal. I am so lucky to have been able to be so close to her in three years of chorus. Even though she will not be playing softball in college I know for a fact that she will find a new hobby that drives her and fills her with such an amazing joy. I am so blessed to call her my friend. Thank you so much Kara. Love you!

Haydn Heisel
An All around Fantastical Guy

Haydn has been known to state that his skills are “the skills that are useless”. I could not disagree more. Haydn has the most versatile and unique skill set I am aware of. As far as I know Haydn is the current best ping pong player at BVHS. His other skills range from being an unbelievable pianist, an unstoppable DDR enthusiast, a titillating Tetris player second to none (except me), a terrific trampoliner, a breath taking banjo player, an unbelievable guitar player, to having a voice that will make you cry. His singing is parallel only by that of Fergie and Jesus. Haydn’s unique set of skills has long been overlooked. He is an excellent student in the classroom but his true skills never get shown. There are no school sponsored games of DDR and no Tetris tournaments held in the PAC. There is no state banjo competition. Only Haydn’s close friends have had the privilege of observing all his truly amazing qualities. If it were up to me I would declare May 18th National Haydn Day. Everyone would simply follow Haydn around all day and take in his awesome. Haydn honestly deserves to be recognized as an all around fantastical guy.

Emily Larson
A talented artist, an honest friend, and a beautiful person inside and out.

Emily first moved to Brandon in middle school. At this time, we were not like we are now. The point when Emily and I truly because friends was last year when I got in trouble. I was at a real low point in my life and a lot of people had turned their backs on me. I felt hopeless and useless. No one seemed to care anymore except this girl. She was there for me. She guided, listened, coaxed, prayed, and loved me. She helped me find my way again instead of letting me spiral back down into nothingness. She helped mold me into the person I am today. The ratchet, yolomaniac, and "we". If it weren't for her, I honestly don't think I would be here right now.

If you ever need a shoulder to cry on, someone to talk to, or someone to even just listen, Em's your girl. She is truly and angel sent down from heaven. She inspires me to be a better person each day not only by encouraging me academically but by simply being a better person. I can honestly say that I don't know what I will do without you next year. Who am I going to hip thrust with? Who is going to sing to 2 Chainz songs with me? Who is going to accept me the way you do? No one. No one will because no one could ever take your spot in being my best friend.

You're one in a million Emily, I love you.

Zach Woodward
I’ve known Zach for some time now but it hasn’t been until recently than he has made that big of influence on my life. If you know Zach, you know that he likes to push the limits. He is the one who has gotten me into several sports that to some are considered to be extreme. Snowboarding is the one of these sports. You could say that I am an easily convinced person. He took me out snowboarding and it was great. I love the feeling of flying down a hill or any smooth surface feeling as if you have no control but in reality it all yours. As a result of that first day, I had a broken wrist…. Some might consider that a bad day but to me that was worth the feeling I had by trying something new. Zach has helped me out of my comfort zone in terms of athletics. I am glad that he has the ability to persuade and I think I am a better person because of him. Even though I admire his bravery, sometimes bravery can be twisted with stupidity and he also teaches me what not to do after attempting something that many would consider crazy or insane.

To Long Pham
Leader, Innovator, Fancy, Asian
“The brother I never had”

When I was in middle school, I remember holding a grudge against Long Pham for not helping me carry a large project I made for class. However, as I matured and entered high school, I saw all the things we had in common. We enjoy tennis, science, and the arts. During the summer of 2009, we developed a friendship when I attempted to help him learn how to serve a tennis ball. He never got the hang of it. Nevertheless, he is still fashionable, witty, and driven to succeed. I am highly competitive, so I constantly tried to emulate him. This usually entailed comparing grades and test scores with him to see who performed better. He consistently scores well on every AP test he takes; and he takes several (AP Biology, AP Chemistry, AP Government, AP World History, AP US History, and AP Calculus). He is truly a multi-faceted scholar.

Besides encouraging academic success, he also introduced me to other ways of learning. He has traveled overseas, and experienced other cultures. When I was over at his house, I was shown a new ethnic food group I had previously ignored, Mexican, particularly taquitos. Watching him join many organizations such as the Gentleman’s Society of High Fashion made me also want to experiment in different social groups like S.A.L.S.A and chorus.

My years with Long have shown me technical, altruistic, and global perspectives that should encompass life. His success in high school has paid off, as he goes to the University of Chicago this fall. I am sure that he will enjoy continued success in the future. He is an idealistic scholar who is always questioning the status quo. I consider him like a brother who drives me to explore new avenues.

She’s Not Just a Pretty Face (She’s got everything it takes) -Shania Twain

Cylie Svartoien. When I think of Cylie, I picture a brilliantly smiling, energized, beautiful woman! Cylie finds the greatest joy in life, just the ordinary, everyday life. This characteristic is hard to find these days. Her bubbly laughter and smile can brighten up anyone’s day, especially mine. If I am ever having a rough day, two minutes with Cylie can heal that right up. I admire how organized and business-minded Cylie is. She is always preparing herself for the future, whether it be by practicing her Spanish in the hallways, rocking the “Echo”, or showing how to be a hard worker. With such skills, her future is sure to be bright and very successful. Even before I read Cylie’s post, I knew I wanted to write my ode for her. I enjoy her love for God and her spontaneous-ness. Cylie is always ready (and willing) to find whichever adventure lies in front of us. Most people just like to snapchat and hang out on their phones all day, but Cylie still knows how to have fun, the real way! Her hard work can be proved when you look at her Zoomba schedule. Cylie not only enjoys this workout herself, but also teaches a class. I thank God for the wonderful friend she has been to me over the years; I am so fortunate to have such a leader in my life! I would also like to thank her for the fun times we have in the car, singing to Shania Twain, windows rolled down and the radio blasting. Thanks Cylie!

Alex Rogan
Young King

I've known Alex since I had study hall with him back in 7th grade. We were never too close, but I knew him mostly as the “loud kid”. Through out the last four years of high school I've gotten to know Alex as much more than just the kid who always had something to say. He can turn any situation into a fun, light-hearted one and is enjoyable to be around all the time. If one of his friends was having a hard time I know that Alex would go out of his way to pick that person back up on their feet and in the right direction again. Anybody who doesn't like this kid does not know him for what he really is. I remember back in our freshman year I was jealous of him the whole season because he was one of the very few freshman who ever played up on varsity. Now after four years of high school soccer, club soccer, and rec soccer I am happy to say that I was able to play alongside such a great kid. His influence does not stop on the field though. Throughout his high school career he was part of the plays, one-acts, and an important part of our student section, to name a few. He was even lucky enough to be named the Homecoming King of our exceptional class.
Kind, hard-working, and passionate about what he does, Alex is the someone that all of us should strive to be like. His generosity and outgoing personality make him someone that anybody would be happy to know. Hopefully as we make our way through college we will be able to stay close, because losing contact with Alex would be a big deal to me. It would mean I would lose a teammate, classmate, and close friend.

Cole Hensley

If you have ever attended a band concert, witnessed any play, watched a choir event, or seen Dancing with the Staff, then you know Cole’s face. That’s because whenever there is something important going on in the school or the community, Cole is a part of it in some way. He has the admirable tendency to find himself contributing his precious time and effort to causes that he finds himself believing in. During my time in high school I often found myself following his lead. His enthusiasm and bravery meant that he joined activities like the play before I did, guaranteeing that I could rely on a friendly face in an unknown environment. Also, he is one of the major figures that encouraged me to first get involved theater, choir, and Yogi Bear, all of which have been wonderful experiences.

It is hard to find a flaw in what Cole represents. Proof of his academic achievement, Cole will be studying at USD next year with pre-acceptance into medical school. Perched high in the ranks of taekwondo, he is at the peak of personal fitness. Cole is a loyal friend and an intense workout partner. With his gift of leadership Cole has been a commander for the Marching Lynx for three years and he also organized the Feed My Starving Children trip to Minneapolis. Bolstering with confidence and charisma, Cole can charm any attractive young woman on the beach. Trust me, I’ve seen it. I have no doubt that with these qualities Cole will thrive in his professional life.

Despite our new school rivalry beginning to form I know that Cole will remain a true friend to me and will continue to be there to encourage me and others that he will meet. Best of luck to you buddy, and thank you.

"Hold Me Closer, Tiny Dancer"

Thirteen years ago on a sunny day outside Brandon Valley Elementary School, fate intervened and I met my best friend, Holly Marie Olesen. I will be forever thankful for her forgetfulness in which bus happened to be hers for without this event, I may never of been able to call such a sweet, kind, beautiful person my best friend. I remembered knowing I had to help her and it just so happened that we rode the same number four bus, lived around the corner from the other, and were even in the same first grade class. From then on we were inseparable. To me this is no coincidence. Recalling a conversation we had earlier, Holly mentioned how we everything happens for a reason and how everybody we meet is important for they are supposed to be in our lives for a reason. I truly believe this is true as I reminisce about the time we have spent together. Everyone who meets Holly notices her caring nature, warmness, and gentle manner that will definitely carry over to her beside manner when she has achieved her dream of being a doctor for she has the clear leadership skills to have such an inspiring job. For awhile, Holly and I had been disconnected from the other. However, even when we were apart she remained my best friend for I will love her always no matter what. I learned a lot about being a friend when she wasn't around and now that we have rekindled our friendship I hope I can be a better friend than I was before. I am so proud of her accomplishments and cannot wait to see what is in store for the future. We may have started at the bottom but we ended up here. This may be the end of our high school careers but it is not the end of our friendship which I couldn't even begin to describe how much it has meant to me even if I tried. And if she is ever stuck without a clue where to go I will always be there to help her along even if we end up going the wrong way. And I just wanted to finish by saying I am eternally grateful for Holly being there and believing in me when I could not believe in myself. That is what being a friend is about and I love, love, love, love her so much.

Eventually our relationship became competitive and we both relished in being able to destroy the other in whatever competition we were participating in. I call him a Pillsbury Dough Boy because he has the biggest baby face I have ever seen. Also, he arrived at school at times wearing the color white on his clothes and his skin. We have only ever argued once in our entire friendship and I think he was just moody that day. Grant is one of my favorite best friends and I have already "dibbsed" a spot as a groomsman at his inevitable wedding. I truly wish him the best in life and all his endeavors.

Luke Hyronimus
Category: Teammate and Leader
One of a Kind

It all started in the 3rd grade when a blonde kid named Luke Hyronimus sat by me in Mrs. Reiter’s class. Immediately we hit it off and became close friends throughout the rest of our Brandon Valley careers. In sixth grade we invented quite possibly the coolest hand shake ever—snap it, kaboot, and shoot it—which has been rehearsed and perfected thousands of times. Luke, a natural trailblazer, was one of the first in our grade to play on the varsity football team and I am honored to have played next to him. Not only did he tremendously help the team with his superb athletic ability, but he also aided the team with his charisma and character. He is the kind of friend that will be there whenever you need him to and will drop everything he is doing to help another. He sets the standard for an all-around hard worker as he puts in numerous hours at his workplace, Tailgators, while juggling sports, academics, and friends. I am lucky to have Luke as a friend and I know we will continue our friendship throughout our lives.

Nicole Peterson
Supporter
“She’s there for you”

I have known Nicole since preschool. Back then, there were only four girls in our class, so we bonded quickly. Nicole and I were in the same class for multiple years in a row… she was my best friend all through elementary school. However, as we got into middle school, we began to drift apart. We have always gone to the same church, and remained friends through everything. I know that if I need to talk to someone, Nicole is there every time.
Nicole and I have been through a lot together, and will always be there for each other. Through high school, I have lost a lot of friends, and every time I knew I could go to Nicole to talk about the things. She’s always been my shoulder to cry on, and my rock through the roller coaster that is high school. I know Nicole is a life long friend, and I look forward to the many more memories to come.

"A True Inspiration"

For the entirety of my high school career I’ve known and been blessed with the presence of a fantastic friend as well as leader. Kenny Mattson and I met on a soccer field freshman year, both with the hopes for an exceedingly prosperous future on and off the pitch. Little did we know we would accomplish a ton during our tenure at Brandon Valley, but it was due to Kenny that I succeeded as well as I have. Kenny is a leader, not to mention a terrific role model for all ages alike, instilling passion and a drive to succeed in every realm of society. Because of his core values, Kenny succeeds and flourishes much more than an average human being. He is a phenomenal representation of what you earn –not receive – for devoting time and having a tremendous work ethic. Instead of trying to figure a way around obstacles or creating excuses, Kenny works to move the obstacle, whether that be an AP exam or a new PR in weight lifting. I could go on for ages talking about the amazing characteristics of such a phenomenal person but it would push the bounds of the publishing limits. Kenny has helped me succeed tremendously and has provided me with wisdom, wisdom that is a precious as the air we breathe. His influence on my life will forever be remembered, and I plan on living by his core values to improve my lifestyle and character. I know in the near future Kenny will be doing something that will be benefitting the world for the better.

“Man In Blue”
Andrew (Austin) Weidenbach
Andrew here has many things too proud of in his already early start in his career. He is a part of a great program in which he learns what is like to be a cop. He already demonstrates the characteristics of public hero. He is a just, a good people person, willing to listen, and all around understanding of one’s situation or at least pretends to show enough interest. His stories of being a cop already has a healthy repertoire. From my understanding he is also quite the stud on the court (even if he can’t handle the ball). He has your back and is always willing to put a guy in a headlock for the benefit of someone else.
