Have you determined the purpose of literature in schools at all? Have you determined the purpose of literature in life?
(Sometimes it's hard to care about subjects in school. Math, for instance. I've not done any algebra for years, yet I know it was good for me because I worked on skills in sequencing, direction following, focusing, prioritizing, reasoning, problem solving, logic creating, and so on. Math helped me think better, simply put. Does literature? In what ways?)
This is Prof. Brian Bedard of USD (South Dakota Author of the Year); he helped me this summer see more about/in/around literature than I ever had.

I think the purpose of having literature in schools and in life is to have a international connection between the countries. People are able to look into different cultures and expolore how others live in a different enviorment. Another purpose is for literature to be an art. People are allowed to express themeselves and show artistic qualities like an painter does to a canvas.
I believe that literature is used in schools to help us gain knowledge. It helps us to expand out vocabulary and better prepare us for college. If we didnt read and we didnt expand our literary knowledge we wouldnt be as knowledgeable about other cultures or experiances we havent had ourselves. Literature helps to broaden our herizons. It is extremely important to have for little children in order to help them learn more words and have a larger vocabulary. Children learn better at an early age with books then they do by just speaking and hearing words being used in conversation. So therefore it is very important to have in schools these days.

All I have to say is that literature is necessary in schoos, but not only that, in everyday life. It teaches us a way to express ourselves.
Literature is being read in everyday life, such as the news paper, bedtime story, children stories, etc. Helps us leave reality into fantacy.

In life literature is important because without it we couldnt "see" into other cultures. We would be culturally inexperianced. It also helps to give us a wider variety of words in our vocabulary that we can use in everyday speech. For future jobs it helps us to show we are mature and have a higher level of thinking, therefore, helping us to gain better jobs and to be more intelligent in job interviews.
We need literature in everyday life because if we didn't, we would all still be cavemen. Just as everything else in the world is developing... so is literature. It expands our knowledge of vocabulary and reading in everyday life.

I agree with Matt K. Literature is necessary in everyday life so we are able to express ourselves, but literature is not the only way to do such a thing. Art, music, theatre, and of course writting are all ways of self expression.
Literature not only allows us to look into other cultures, but also into our own diverse culture. It allows the beliefs and attitudes of one generation to be viewed and analyzed by another.

I think we need literature so that we can connect with other people, cultures, lifestyles, and the past. As the world has grown and developed, oral traditions of the past have been replaced by written word. Just like how these past oral tradtions connected people through stories and events, today's written literature connects people also. Also, I think studying written language is important so that we can see the evolution of literature through our world's history.

I think that the purpose of literature in schools is to help make students think differently. Instead of always thinking what's wrong and what's right, literature makes you think more in depth and outside of the box. You begin to wonder and think about what's going on and what's going to happen next. The purpose of literature in life I think is to give you a better understanding of life. Some stories can give you a different perspective or can give you advice or encouragement. Literature can also be entertaining and also emotionally touching. Without literature, the world would be boring because you wouldn't be able to use your imagination as much, and everything would always be right or wrong, never in between.

Literature in today's society is important to all of us. No Matter what you will be when you grow up whether it be a chemist an engineer or even the president of the United States, if you can't read than you will odds are unless you decide to change that you will odds are be unsuccessful in the future. I'm not sayin you need to go 7 years of college and be a major english and read long novels for a living just make an effort with english and you will be fine in my opinion
I think that literature is used to expand our mind. To make people think the impossible. Some people are good in art while others are good in making people see what they see though words. Literature is used mainly to broaden your world. It allows you to open up to new things that you may never actually get to experience yourself.
5 Literature is needed in all life it keeps past thoughts alive in the future and helps build a better future of more knowing people know how it is in other parts of the world with out going there and so on like being poor. Literature also helps us know what past people thought about the world like the native americans. With your literature it would be much harder to build a better tomorrow.
Believe me: any college/university will have professors who will be able to help you see more and experience more, regardless of the class or of your major. The learning that takes place in those four(+) years will shape the way you think for life.
I believe literature really does help us with our everyday life. It helps you think outside the box and to think more deeply inside the story. Literature gives you a new perspective on things and can teach you about anything you would ever want to know. It also can be used to relax people and can take their minds away from whatever they were thinking about before.
I think literature is taught in schools to make kids think more. If it wasn't for literature the world would not be where it is today. We would not be able to communicate as well as we can. Also in literature you can never be wrong like you can in math or science you are always right, it is your opinion.

I agree with breanna w. I think that if we dont have literature we wouldnt be able to understand much of anything. You have to be able to read and understand literature in any job.

But hey, because literature doesn't have any exact right answers doesn't that make it harder to learn and understand? In math, there is always a right answer. But in literature, one person can see meaning from a perticular story and other may see something completely different.
7- the purpose of literature in schools is to make kids of all ages think about experiences they may never encounter. The House on Mango Street took us to a poor place in chicago. Most White american teenagers may never go to chicago or even be poor. other literature takes us to the South the North, Europe, Africa, the Past, or the Future. Literature makes you think about differents lifestyles. Learning about other people makes your more knowlegeable about people, culture, costoms, religon, and so much more. Because you are knowlegeble about people and costoms you can interact with many more people in life.

I believe that literature is important to like because you never stop ready. As you get older the more words you must know. Literature also expands you mind to things goin on around you in the world.

I think the purpose of literature in schools is like others have said to expand the mind. It is a class that you are really neither right or wrong in most cases but are free to see whatever you wish to see in the writing. You can create your own images, symbols, and meanings in what you read. I agree with nicole when she says it helps with an international connection because it does. Also a social connection in that you can relate to all races and classes of people as well.

I think literature is meant to educate us. The more we read, the more we will understand. Reading literature about history can help us not make the same mistakes again. We can read and understand why things are the way they are. Literature also gives you a new perspective. For example, The House on Mango Street gives us the perspective of a poor, hispanic girl in urban Chicago.

Literature to me is important because it can get you out of everyday life and bring you to a new world. If your going through rough times you can read a book and it can help you get your mind off those things for awhile. It's also very important in communication for people around the world, people are able to tell their story and have everyone read about it and relate it to themselves.

I agree with noah b in that we need literature to connect with others and with the past. We need literature to help express our selves and to be able to express what we feel. I also think that literature is more than just grammar and books. For instance we can learn from the peoples mistakes by reading what they did wrong in the past. Literature helps you broaden your horizon and able to understand more what other people are saying. When you understand other people you can better understand yourself and learn from them. I strongly agree with Mr. C's comment "The learning that takes place in those four(+) years will shape the way you think for life". Literature is more than just words and letters it has meaning and can change your view of any opinion or event. I believe a person who can understand everyones view point in a sitution is a great person. Finally i think literature can change your outlook on life.

Sometimes literature is hard to understand but I think it is needed in life to help you understand different perspectives on anything and everything.

Literature is important because like any other subject in school it makes you think. You use reading always in everyday life and it helps you expand your knowledge by learning new vocabulary and just by learning to think differently.

Literature is very important in our lives because we need to be able to connect with other cultures and people. Without literature we would not understand why other cultures do things the way we do. Literature is also important because it helps us with spelling and grammar so we can communicate properly. In business we need to be able to communicate properly with our co-workers and our bose so you do not misunderstand each other.
7
I've thoought about it, i think of all subjects it really expands your imagination or even just your ability to think more clearly and fluently. I myself am not a big reader but everyonce in a while i get book that i start and just can't put it down.

ok, come on. No body dislikes literature? There are bad aspects of it too. It can sometimes influence us negatively or make us prejudge others because of something we may have read. Literature isn't always a good thing. It gets really boring if everyone says of variation of the same thing.
Paul's right: a literary text can have an agenda. It is up to the scholarly reader to determine that agenda based upon the author's voice, technique, approach, diction, tone, mood, and so on. The reader, once she has determined the author's agenda, responds in affirmation or denial--or a combination/mixture therein. Texts are subject to our interpretation. We need to remain in control of our own thinking, whether it be while listening to a speech or reading a novel.

Its not just liturature that does that to us. Everything we here on the news, read newspapers, what we see on tv or in movie, and what we read in books. They can all have a perswading effect on us. When someone writes something it may not be just for the fun of it, but try to change our oppinions on somethin.
Period 1
Literature has become of "great" importance to the U.S. culture, us as a nation, our intelligence, the way we interact, etc. Without proper English, spelling, word usage, or grammar-we would more than likely be a secluded nation, void of any interaction/ socialization or any understanding of what people are writing or trying to say. Reading has opened many minds and displayed many view points, thus making us more intelligent and understanding. (along with a lot of other things too) Basically, all I'm saying is, if there wasn't any form of literature in our country or any other country there wouldn't be a developed country/nation or civilization.
Yes: literature is a form of thought creation. It comes from people and is analyzed by people, all for the purpose of organized flow of information. The ability to process information separates us from much of the rest of the natural world.
I agree with most people's post. Literature is now a way of life and that way of life keeps expanding. I think without Literature, we would most likely be lost and "dumb".
