Is art relevant today? How? Why/why not? Will art remain relevant? Should art be promoted and developed in schools? (By "art," I mean written art, i.e. novels & poetry; visual art, i.e. paintings and sculptures; and performed art, i.e. plays and oral interpretation--and music, of course.)

art is one of the most important things there is. for most its easier to learn when they have a visual. art is also therapuetic.
Art is very relevant today and will be relevant in the future. A lot of people make their living from being artists. Like actors and actresses, singers, painters, etc. Art should totally be promoted and developed in schools because there are a lot of people that like doing some type of art.
Art is very relevant in todays literature. Besides the obvious visual effect it gives a reader, it also makes the book/novel more interesting and appealing to the eye. I believe that art will continue to be relevant in literature as well as life itself, b/c without it, our world would be dull and every would be a "zombie".
If we didn't have art, we wouldn't have pictures. I believe art in relevant today in our world. I agree with major_flint. People do art as a living and it makes them feel good about themselves when creating such a picture. I belive art should be developed in school and promoted. Everyone is creative in their own way weather its art or something else.
I like art because it can help illustrate what is going on in literature. I like art because you can see a painting and make what you want out of it. One painting might have two different meanings for two different people.
I think art is a wonderful thing. But in schools, if you absolutly know that you have no artistic ability, you shouldnt be forced to take it. When took my art classes i dont think that i had one project that i did a great job at. And the techniques that we learned i will most likely not ever use them ever again in my life.
Yes art is relevant today and will be forever. It allows a person to think deeply and to be able to express themselves in a different form rather than writing or speaking. Art should definitely be promoted in schools at a young age up til graduation year, because the more a person expands on their artistic ability, the more their brain grows and the better they are at expressing their ideas and what not in different ways.
Art is necessary in today's world. Written art allows us to expand our vocabulary and forces us to think more instead of just sitting on the couch watching endless "reality" tv shows. Visual art lets us actually see things from someone else's perspective. We can create a picture in our own mind and then compare it with another to form a more exact view of something. Performed art is essential! Alot of emotion and hard work goes into plays. Aside from that, music is extremely meaningful. Although some songs don't really have much thought put into them, others allow you to relate to them and disect them to find each individual thought/symbol.
Art is relevant and it will always be relevant. Art is a way to reach someone without actually saying anything. Art is more then words, it relays a message in the look or feel of something rather then what it says. Art can exploit more feelings in somone then anything else, it can stir emotion and make you think deeper into a subject. Everything we do is somesort of art, and it will always be beautiful. If we lose art then we will lose ourselves too.
Ms. Briggs--You might not ever use the techniques you attempted in art class, but you'll use the thinking skills that come with art appreciation and symbolism, for sure. You might use your knowledge of color to decorate your living room some day, for instance.
I think that art is relevant and will/should remain relevant. Art is important and should be promoted in schools. Art can help one better understand many things. Art can compare things and make people think in ways they have not before. It can also have hidden meanings, or meanings that you can develop on your own from what you see in it. Every person looks at a piece of art differently and will take something different from it. A piece of artwork can mean nothing to someone and everything to someone else. With so many different types of art to choose from almost everyone can be good at one. School sbould be about chooing your destiny. Art is in everyone's future. It is everywhere we look; billboards, tv, magazines, books, the internet, etc... It should be dealt with more in schools. Not just doing art but also analyzing art of all different kinds. I think that stories do not need pictures, because then it allows the reader to develop their own images in their head. A good picture can make a story even better, and a bad picture can break one. Sometimes when I read a book and then see a movie based on it I am disappointed if the characters do not look how I had imagined. That is why I like how the illustrator did Life of Pi.
I think art is a very important aspect in today's society and will continue to remain relevant. Art expresses life, and how different people perceive things because Everyone sees things differently. People's opinions and emotions are shown through art. IT should continued to be promoted in schools, and everyone has their own special artistic talent and it should be shown through in some way.
Art is extremely relevent in literature. By seeing something, it is so much easier to visualize the entire book, which makes the book much easier to understand. I think art will always be important. Many people are visual learners, so they will continue to look at art to learn. I think art should be promoted in schools, but it should not be required to take many art classes. You can't force a person to enjoy doing art. A person has to find their own passion in art to really make a masterpiece.
Art is relevant and always will be because their is no way to tell a story without art of some kind. The only way that the future will change art is in the way that it is presented.
But Lindsey--can't and shouldn't we force someone to appreciate, consider, and wonder about art?
Cory's right--the medium of art is changing, undoubtedly.
For me i believe art never changes over time. Yes, their are new techniques developed and different forms of art that is developed, but the meanings behind will always be from deap down in the artists soul. Even in the 1800s when an artist was to pick up paper and a brush they would be making art that describes how they feel, or in ways of interpreting something. Many things have changed over time, but in my opinion art is all the same, emotion. If you were to look at a drawing that was done in the early 1900s and then looked at a drawing from today, how would you be able to tell the difference. Art is a very important thing that everyone must have in their lives. Even if you are not very interested in art you should always respect the artist and appriciate their point of view. I personally envy people that can take an image from their mind and transfer it onto a peice of paper. Being an artist I believe is one of the greatest qualities a person can have whether it be with painting, literature, carpentry, it doesn't matter because each of these ways of art allow you to express yourself as an individual.
I admire people who are good at art. I am not good at drawing things. I love doing creative things though, like decorating or doing crafts. I love colorful things.
I believe that art is a relevant today as it has been in any other era. set aside from the shear fact that its beautiful and has the ability to change an individuals emotions. I believe if we were ever to lose our artistic ways, we would most prevelently be dropped into a global dystopia (1984). Art can be used not only to serve the purpose of housing a magnificent looking illustration in can also hide a persons true inhabisions. There beliefs, culture, and there life in general. "artists use lies to tell the truth, while politicians use truth cover them up."
Art apppreciation is one of the greatest emotional nourishments, for the artist and observer alike. Paintings, dance, theater, scultures, drawings, and other exemplary art forms can influence people to believe in the mystical, the implausible, and the impossible, which is why art is completely relevant to Life of Pi. It can be mystical in order to make a point; to persuade a person into understanding the greatest emotions or events. Art is a storytelling device that helps us express what words cannot describe...when words aren't worthy enough to describe. For example, children grieving over the loss of a family member (especially a sibling close of age) are encouraged to draw what they feel. Those drawings reveal a lot of pain and confusion, which helps a psychologist/therapist understand how to assist the child...not to mention it helps the child release and define their pain. Art can be definite and general at the same time - art can be overwhelmly beautiful or just unaffective. It depends on how much the observer decides to be affected...
Yes art is relevant. Art helps you picture what is happening. Like the painting of the animals fighting really brought the scene alvie for me. Yes art should be promoted and developed more in schools. Its a productive way to spend your time. And its not like u have to be good to do it, youu can be a horrible drawer and still draw things it doesnt matter really. Art is what you make it.
To go back to our previous novel, without art, music, and otherways that people express themselves, we would be living in a 1984 society, so absolutely art is relevant today and must continue to be relevant in the future.
Yes, art is relevant today. If we did not have art, life would be boring. Art allows us to be individuals. Art can be entirtaning and it opens the doors to a new world. You can experience many feelings through art. A piece of art work, whether it be music, a painting, or liteature can flood ones mind with feelings they have felt or have not felt before. When you are able to personnally relate to art it is at that moment when you are able to deeply connect with it. The same piece of art work may bring different feelings to different people just from what the person has grown up with and gone through in their life.
Last year in art club we visited an art therapist. I found it extremely interesting. She works at the school right in front of the cathedral and is the art teacher but does the art therapy thing along with it as her choice. Art therapy is not recognized by many insurance places and can be very expensive. This is because people do not view art as a way to figure out what is really going on with you, when, in reality, it could be the best way. Many people do not feel as though they can talk about their feelings. This is where art therapy really comes in handy because the art developed, eventhough it can be interpreted in many different ways allows the therapist to almost experience what the person is going through. The lady said that one of her students was a mute, by choice. She could tell that this child must have gone through some tough times and so she just took some time alone with the child and set so materials in front of her and watched what she created. This is also a way for those people who are not sure on how to decribe something to show it. My feelings are that this is just as good if not better than the normal therapy that so many people go through today. Most of the time I find art relaxing, at least not when I have to follow a deadline and I do not have to do twelve of the same thing over and over again.
The means of producing art and selling it for profit is a freedom in America...thank God we're not being stripped of our freedoms or rights as humans and civilians.
Art is an educational device as well as a form of therapy. Reading skills are built from the ground up, starting with picture books. Children would be able to read a book in context like A Tale of Two Cities...it kills the imagination at that age. Pictures, theater, sculpture, dance, and other art forms can serve as the foundation to higher level thinking.
Dance as art is now becoming a social activist. Move For Aids, is a foundation increases social awareness of AIDS through selling a elegant photography book of professional dancers/bodies in motion. Profits from the book go towards AIDS research...moveforaids.org. (I think that's the websitem, but I can't check because the school is blocking the website!!) maybe moveforaids.com or google "Move For AIDS".
Art is very usefull and helpful in many ways. It helps us visualize things better, it helps get our feelings out in a good way, it is entertaining, and it is a relaxing way to show off your talents. We will always need art in our lives.
Art is interpretation so if you were to take away art you would take away free speech … they really go hand in hand. Art is something schools need to support more. Although I have no drawing/ painting skills in my body I love art. A lot of people look to art to help them relate to the world. Sometimes art just speaks to you. It can help you through a hard time or empower you to do something great. It is apart of our everyday lives. More people need to open their eyes to art.
I think that art is important because it helps us see things from a different point of view. Some artist go to places in the world that we will never go and share their pictures with us. With out movies and TV shows life would be dull on rainy days when there is nothing to do outside.
I wanted to add that I have had an experiance with art that actually took my breath away .. I was at one of the many sidewalk art festivals downtown and i came across this booth with a young man that was selling some ... strange paintings that he and some other college students had created I flipped through a couple stackes and then came across one that i couldnt set down it was a painting of the world... but it was eye opening it made you think differently like... i dont even know how to explain it... it was the world ... but small its hard to explain but it touched me and to this day I wish that I would have bought it. It was amazing!
I think art is important, I also think that art can be looked at in different ways, just like a book can be inturpretated in different ways. Art is cool becuase you can draw things that arent realistic, that get people to look at it in different ways. I think that the weird pictures or the colorful pictures are the one that stick out and these are the ones that people like to look at and study. Art and Books just give you a different understanding of things, a book you have to imagine the pictures, and in pictures you have to guess whats going on, or what the picture is about. Basically I think there just two different ways of thinking.
Dont get me wrong i love art and i love to look at it. I like being able to pick out all of the colors and how they are used but i personally dont do art mmyself and taking art classes have really done me any good. I love decorating our house. At the current mement we are remodeling our home and i have had a lot of say in the colors we have been using.
Art is so important in life today because it says who you are. With out art our world would have a greater chance to falling to a Big Brother. Pretty much every one says in the 2080 project that the best way to prevent a 1984 was to keep art and keep an individul. Art makes life much more enjoyable and give people something to live for.
Artwork can be used to tell a story, sometimes much easier than reading a book. With artwork, you are getting the story told along with a picture. Sometimes it's hard to picture in your head what is really going on or what the setting might look like when reading a book. Artwork may also make a person see things differently than what they had expected before. It gives a reader more knowledge of what the author is trying to say, and it also allows a reader to look at things from different perspectives rather than just assuming what is happening is the picture that they may or may not see in their heads.
Hooray for Laura the Explora! Good you get some "say," isn't it?
Art has existed for thousands of years and has always been appealing to the eye and our emotions within ourselves. Art can be expressed in many ways of how someone feels towards everything. Without art life would be boring and unsificicated. Life revolves around art and how we see it is important to our well being and everyday life.
I think that art is becoming more relevant now days because our generation is about self identy and art is the epitome of self expression. Everyone wants to have their own niche in society. There is a growing art population among teen now days, too. So with all of thoes factors art has really gained momentum and is starting to have a real impact on our culture.
