Essay, Visual Project, and/or Test Progress
How are your ideas for your essay coming? How about your ideas for your visual project? And are you going to be ready for a matching/multiple-choice/true-false test? What help do you need from me or from other students to be successful?
I vow to do all I can to make sure each student has every opportunity--and the necessary time--to succeed on these three tasks, which are designed to ensure thinking carefully/analytically, writing compellingly, and reading critically.
I pretty sure i know what im doing for the essay part of things. But im unsure are we allowed to draw what we want as our visual project, or not. Because i have a drawing made and im not sure if i can use it. Im on my way to being ready for the test. ive started to reread certain confusing chapters and i have managed to finish my packet. Also if there was any way to discuss the actualities of the test then im sure id be ready for anything. All i think i need is a guided path from which to base my understanding and im well on the way to an A on this test.
Although I'm not very good with art and making these visual projects, I am already done with that (I drew a picture of a pig on a stick...) and I don't think the essay is going to be too difficult. It's nice to be in your study Mr. Christensen because it gives me the opportunity to be able to ask you questions and I think that will prove to be beneficial to me when I actually start writing my essay. I think I'm going to write about the pecking order one because I can relate it to my life kind of. Being the middle child, I got "pecked" from my sister AND my brother, so I will have many stories to help explain why there shouldn't be a pecking order among siblings, and also maybe why there should be. There are good and bad consequences to it. As for the test, I know there is a lot of symbolism in this book and I think I know all of them but it would be nice to go over them in class maybe! Otherwise, I don't think the test will be an issue as long you read the book.
The Othello visual projects were phenomenal, and will be used in future years to help students think about Shakespeare's cool story. Some of the talent and awareness that comes through in visual projects simply is not possible through writing or speaking or... The visual projects of past students will help you consider the novel 1984 by George Orwell (real name Eric Blair). 1984 is a book you simply must know to function in American culture. It's timeless, revealing, and thought-provoking.
We'll go over and over the symbolism and interpretation(s). We'll look at professional essays to help us study this text. We'll examine every nook and cranny of this island. We'll see the film (1990) and, through noticing the similarities and differences, we'll conceptualize this novel in more significant ways than ever. I want and hope for mastery of this book!
For my paper, I am not 100% sure what topic I am going to write on. They all have great meaning behind them in both the book and examples from the real world. I do not think that it will be that hard to come up with two pages to back up your thoughts. I have no idea what to do for my visual project. Everything that I can think of has already been done in such a ornate fashion. To the point that I do not know what to do to make it more ornate. Maybe I can take a picture that I find on the internet and make it more simple and me.
This test is a tough one and is very important; it will judge who has read the book carefully and who has not. I will make myself available before school and after school and during 3rd and 8th periods, hoping to see students who need help understanding this classic novel.
I have no idea what I am going to write for my essay. I think I am going to have difficulty with writing 800 words for one topic. As for the visual, I have no clue what to do. I am not good at drawing so I don't have any clue what to do. I think I am going to be prepared for the test. It helps that I am in your study hall so I can ask you all the questions I have. I hope I figure out what I am going to do for the project and the essay soon.
Society does not need police to keep people honest. my essay will be on this topic. I agree with it because i think honesty has nothing to do with police. People will do what they want to do and if police are there then the people get in trouble, if there were no cops then that person gets away with the crime. The crimals are the most honest people because they actual kill someone they are mad at. Thats not good, but its true. For a visual some of us are getting together and making a video. I think i will do good on the test, i might just get a few wrong when dealing with the story. But we will discuss the book in class and then i will get a better understanding.
I'm not sure which of those topics I'm going to use in my essay. I think my visual project will probably have something to do with a pig. Maybe I'll put a pig on a stick like others have done. I will be ready for a test once I finish reading the book and working on the study guide. I could use some help with understanding the book better and being able to answer the study guide questions. It is a little hard to find the answers in the book. I have benn able to find some though.
i don't really like the essay were doing right now. i know what to write on, but its just a hassel. the visual aid is fun. i'm creating the island using cardboard and other materials. i think i'll be ready for the test as long as i go back and read a few parts of the book and study before the test rather than cram.
Can you all have the novel finished by Friday? That's the day I want to talk about the conclusion as much as possible/needed. The ending is grim and hopeful at once. However, I think Golding is pessimistic about the way we have created such a competitive culture in the "West" (Europe and America).
For the visual project, you could do one of the following options you might not have considered: a skit, a video, a powerpoint, a digital photo, a photo album, a book cover, a newspaper cover/picture, a CD with something visual, a collage...
all wars are preventable. this well be the esay that i am writing about. i have all ready writing about the frist half of my page and i should be done by this weekend. my visual project is being cruved out of styrofoam that well look like the island with a fire on top and a scar though it. i have been looking over the book but i well need to do more if i want to get an A. i can only realy help my self to get the grade. help would help so that is what i might do to get ahead.
Polladizzle-I completely agree with you. Society does not need police to keep people honest. Being honest and comitting a crime really have nothing to do with each other. Police are here to help enforce the laws, as well as keep us safe(or try to anyways). Also, I agree with what you said about (some) criminals being extremely honest, it may be a horrible thought to actually comitt murder, but it's extremely honest...to the point that it affects someone's life. Even though, this is not the topic I am choosing to write my essay on, I thought it was an interesting thought. -To be completely honest, I haven't exactly given a lot of thought as to which option I'm going to write on. And the visual project-not even the slightest clue....except if us girls(me, andrea, meggz) make a video
I dont believe Im ready for the test yet...I had some trouble comprehending the novel, but I think it helps with all these visual projects and the essay and trying to relate to the novel more and more.
As for my essay, I found it easy to write about #7 after we wrote our four page paper on advertisements, because my ad is directly related to sex in everyday life and I was able to connect with Sigmund Freud as well.
i had a hard time deciding which essays to write...i got started on each of my five choices but for some my ideas are not flowing...they will be interesting nonetheless...my visual should turn on pretty well i think...i think i should do well on the test as well...when is it tho?...and i hated the ending of that book...it never said what happened to jack...the art work of the boys with the spears that u showed in class never showed ralph or piggie so i dont understand it...im confused...
I have decided to draw the scene where Jack is crouching like a sprinter. While he is hunting the pig, as we found out he failed. The essay I am currently narrowing it down. Right now I could use two or three of the plots and do well. Right now I am trying to decide which one I can make exsepitional. The test is going to be a bit difficult. Reason being I am yet to finish my packet.
For my essay I'm not sure what my topic is going to be. I want to write about something that effects me and the book. I am thinking about writting about number 2. The younger we are, the more selfish we are. Becuase i have two younger siblings and i know how it is. For my visual i was thinking about either drawing or making something. I am thinking about making somthing that will represent the island.
I havn't really thought too much about what projects/essay promp im going to do yet. everyone should have no trouble finishing the book by friday. Once I hit the climax of the book i couldn't put it down. I just had to know what was going to happen in the end. In the end when jack's tribe wanted Ralphs head on top of a spear they nearly took out the whole island with the fire. Luckily the passing ship saw the fire otherwise i don't think the others would of survived much longer.
For my essay I don't really know what to write about because I dont know what to relate to and how to relate it. I might write about different conflicts that took place in the book or how everyones attitude changed in the book. Two pages worth of my own thoughts doesnt seem hard to come up with as long as I go back and read a little then I could accomplish this assignment very easilyj. My visual project was very easy since I brought in a conch and let Mr. Christensen have it and good luck for the rest of you on your visual project.
I have yet to start any of these projects. I know the dead lines are coming up, but I seem to work better under pressure to get them done. I have an idea for my visual and I am in the process of trying to find something for it. The essay is going to be harder for me to do, because I am not as good at writing, especially one as long as it is. One thing on getting us ready for the test would be to talk over the book and make sure we understand it. I know I was kind of confused of some of the ending.
I think writing the paper will be easy just because we don't have many of guide lines. When we read through the checklist paper before every book there is so many things to consider, and now we will get a chance to express our opinion. It's even better that our papers can be written on this blog so others can read them and tell us what they think. Blogging is a whole new way of learning that I have never done before, but in some ways I like it. I'm not sure what I'm going to do for my visual. I have many ideas but I want to make it original. The test should be ok... It has been along time sense the beginning of the book so I'll have to do some reviewing. I have finished the book but need to finish the study guide. Once I do that and review the book I should be prepared. I don't know how much time we have in class, but it would help me if we could just talk about the book briefly so it refreshes our memories.
It's ironic: the only way the boys are "rescued" is by starting a fire large enough to be seen by the warring men in the sky and at sea. The only way the warring men see the island is due to the entire island burning to ashes. Are they really "rescued," though? Is their home still there? If there is nowhere for the boys to be taken, then they are not definitively "rescued."
Do we blame Jack, or do we blame his role models back home? His role models are his military parents and other adults who cannot get along and who start war.

As for being honest, I think that cops make people more nervous and more susceptible to lying. If I was at a party that got busted and I was able to get away, I would. For a visual, it's a possibility that Pollard, Ramse, and I are going to get together and make a sweet "lord of the flies" remake video. As for the test, well, I guess I will have to dedicate one of my Saturdays to reading the book cause we will just say i'm not too far. :/
I think I have an idea what i will do for my essay. I want to do mankind is the cruelist of all beasts, because I think there will be alot to write about. I think it is true because we actually have emotions and most animals dont. when most animals young are killed they dont really care they just keep on living without greeving. I think there is a lot to write about on this topic, and i think it is really cool that we have emotions unlike all other animals. Animals might have some sort of emotions but they are nothing compared to ours. I dont really know what i am going to do for my visual yet. I will probably draw a picture or something that shows all the boys in the jungle.
The purpose of any army should be to keep peace not seek to create/start war, right? I support our troops because we/they try to keep peace in the world.

i dont think we should blame jack or is parents. Something just took over his mind once they realized that they may be there for a while. that is something that i think would happen to all of us if put into that situation. His parents most likely had nothing to do with the way jack reacted on the island. Besides the children are so yound i have a feeling that they really didnot know a whole lot about what was going on with the war and the reasoning behind it.
You said that is test is going to be a tough one. I think the class and I will be ready if we take the time to study. For me it will require more time to study for this book that the other books we have read. This has been one of the easier reads, but I think it has more meaning that some of the other books. I will have to take some time out of my schedule, as do you, to come and review for the test. I not only hope to get a good grade on the test but I also want this book to have an effect on my life. I don't think I will be on an island with other kids, but the lessons they learn are appliable to my own life.
I think the essay is a really great assignment. It allows students to pick from a large variety of topics and discuss their opinions about the topic of thier choice. I am writing about "The force of good is always stronger than the force of evil". I think it's a topic that can be elaborated on and one that I can express my thoughts on clearly. I like the idea of blogging because others can read our views and possibly be changed by them or at least think about them. Blogging also allows students to be able to express thier opinions openly without fear of others' immediate reactions. I'm not for certain what I'm going to do for a project but I'll read over my notes and brainstorm so hopefully it will be origional.
I haven't got much of a start on my essay because I've been extremely busy. I have a few sentences started and I think I'm going to do one of them about darkness. I haven't completed my visual, but have been coming up with ideas. I think I'm ready for the test. Reviewing it in class will help me understand it even more. It will be good to be able to talk about it when everybody has finished the book. In order for me to be successful, we just need to go over the main parts of the book that will be covered on the test. We should go through some of the things that happened in the beginning of the book to make sure we haven't forgotten any of the main points.
I think i will be prepared for the LOTF test but i probably wouldn't have without the extra time given to use. I've been reading as much as i can but have been falling behind. I think that the book is fascinating but sometimes when Golding goes into extreme detail i tend to loose interest. I dont think it will be hard to right an essay on LOTF because of our class conversations. We have talked about a million ways to interpret the book so to find my own shouldn't be too hard. Also i actually enjoyed working on our projects its fun to be in groups and accomplish something meaningful while having fun. I think it brought me back to my childhood some. Being able to color and make things that show your point of view is far more fun than answering questions. So i look forward to seeing everyone's visual projects.
Good English experiences in college will allow you to think for yourself, as long as you can substantiate your opinions with evidence from the text(s) or from other sources (primary and secondary).
I would have to say I agree with 5loneye about the essay being a really good idea. It has helped me look at a topic and think critically about it and also having others read it will help because sometimes you gain other ideas from reading what others have to say. I already know that I will be prepared very well for the test because at first I was behind from being gone but now that I am caught up and understanding more what is going on in class things are much more appealing. I am also looking forward to seeing what kind of projects everybody has come up with to present because everybody has put so much work into them.
I am having problems with the visual!... This kind of stuff isn't really my forte... I hope I'll get it done... I am just not looking forward to it. The visual projects really appeal to some people, *cough* LEAH *cough*, hehe, but I think these projects do help relate the book in a slightly different way...

Henning--the essay is supposed to be "hassle-free." How is it a hassle? I'll help if I can. Not attacking or getting defensive, just wondering.
For the visual project, you could do one of the following options you might not have considered: a skit, a video, a powerpoint, a digital photo, a photo album, a book cover, a newspaper cover/picture, a CD with something visual, a collage...

Is this an apocalyptic novel?
I haven't got much of a start on my essay because I've been extremely busy. I have a few sentences started and I think I'm going to do one of them about darkness. I haven't completed my visual, but have been coming up with ideas. I think I'm ready for the test. Reviewing it in class will help me understand it even more. It will be good to be able to talk about it when everybody has finished the book. In order for me to be successful, we just need to go over the main parts of the book that will be covered on the test. We should go through some of the things that happened in the beginning of the book to make sure we haven't forgotten any of the main points.
At a Holocaust memorial: "Forgive, but never forget." Golding wants us to remember--and to change.
You could create a powerpoint with your analyses, Zach. I'd likely use it in the future.
Mr. Christensen, is this the blog page that we post our essay's on?
