Why are movies so popular? How can movies be applied to an English course? What role can film play in the analysis of literature? This is the cover of the DVD
Grizzly Man, a psychological investigation that connects closely with
One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest and
The House on Mango Street. Psychology is salient in each book. Consider this website (a wiki), then respond:

I think that film can be used to analysis literature by providing an accurate visual repersentation that can fill in the pictoral blanks in our heads when we read an exceptional piece of writting. Also film can be linked to literature in a psychological way in some cases. For instance the DVD Grizzly Man shares a connection with the novel One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest in that they both are tragic stories of people trying to understand their inner selvs better and their relationships with the beings around them, bear or human.
Film and literature are one in the same, really. Literature is better in certain ways. Film is better in others. I love comparing and contrasting. With some books, like the Harry Potter series, I am satisfied to see the movies (but I have read the first Potter book and many parts of the others). It is tough to read all the books one wants to! It is also tough to see all the movies one wants to! I'm an admitted addict of both!
Everyone can relate to "Superbad." Everyone has had at least one very close friend. The best books and movies have plots that are in some way relatable. Even if their settings, characters, and themes are not relatable, if the events of the story can be connected to, the book or movie holds value.
I feel that the movies can sometimes distract from the significance of a book... Sometimes, the ambiguity allowed in a book helps set the tone and setting, making the whole novel seem complete... but in cinema, the characters are THERE, there is no hiding that... Movies can never explain in such detail that books can without ruining the action or plot... Movies are a great way to relax and enjoy life, but they detract from the true essence of literature in my opinion.
i concure with mr rock, the movie is never as good as the book. But more people go to the movie because our society is lazy and they would rather have something that might not be as high quality read to them rather than taking the effort and time to go read the novel.
Right--I don't have time to read the Harry Potter books. But I love the movies, each of which is an imaginative stimulus and an emotional release.
People sometimes pick to watch the movies based on books rather then read the book because the movie may seem more intersting then the book cover may be. In a movie you can see full discriptions of everything but with a book, you have to imagine what is going on with the discriptions they give you. Time is also a factor. Alot of people dont have the time to sit and read a 400 hundred page book but they have time to watch a two hour movie. It is also about peoples preferences. Which would they like better. Movies can help people get a better image of what is going on rather then in a book.
I think that movies don't show enough detail to truely get the whole plot of the story. I agree with Dellman when he said that we go to movies instead of reading the books because we are to lazy to read the book. People like to have the books made into movies so they know what the charactors in the book look like instead of using their imagination.
I personally like movies, because i fall asleep reading, and books take to long. Movies are better in the class room because you can cover more of the movie, compared to what could be accomplish when discussing a book.
Movies are so popular because in certain movies we can put ourselves in their shoes and we can try and see what we would do in their situations. Or maybe some movies are strictly just for the fun and enjoyment of going to movies with friends or girlfriends/boyfriends. Or maybe the movie is just supposed to be hilarious. I suppose it's just the taste in music we have that intrigues us to go.
I agree with Freddy also. America doesn't want to take the time a read a book that could take a couple weeks when you could spen ten dollars and go the the movie theatre. Also it is easier to watch something than to imagine stuff in your head. I prefer both but proabably would like watching movies rather reading a book. Unless its a Gary Paulson or the book "The End of the Dream"
When reading a book, you form you're own pictures and ideas about the book and you only see things from you're point of view, watching a movie allows you to see things from someone else's stand point and you can understand their idea of how something is suppose to go. So just watching a movie is alright if you just wanna see the movie makers point of view, or just to be lazy, but for the best analysis of books reading it first then watching the movie is a great way to broaden your horizen and analyze different ideas of a topic.
I think the book is usually alot better then the movie. The book can add more details than the movie. But i have to be really bored to read a book, so i usually watch movies.
I think movies are so popular because they are like books but they are books that people do the imagining for you. So you get the same effect with no work at all opening up you mind and thinking freely. Film can make you look at a book and say things like I thought the set should look more like this, or that character does not have a good actor for his portrayal. So I think as long as you are reading the books along with watching movies you are expanding your learning and it will help in future reading endeavors.
Films can be popular because they let you escape from the world and feel like you are in someone elses world for the time being, they can add adventure and excitment and many other things. In a way a movie is like a novel. Films can help people to analize literature in the fact that many times literature can help one anyalize theirselves.
I feel that it's more work to read a book when you can get just as much from a movie you don't get as much detail because alot of it isn't needed to know whats going on i would rather see it on the tv then to try to imagine it
I think movies have become popular because people like to see what people are doing and what thier expressions are instead of just reading about them. Movies could be for lazy people in that way I guess because people don't want to take the time to sit down and read. Our culture is so fast paced people always have lists of things they abosolutely have to get done and usually the tasks aren't even that important. I like movies and I really enjoy them but I like books better. Im books you can become the people and know how they're feeling and what they're thinking, and in movies that's not always the case.
However, movies can have a positive role in literature. By seeing whats happening and watiching one gets a better idea of what's going on in the book, and it's also easier to relate if you know real people are acting. It makes it more personable and more likely to happen in real life.
this world has a terrable obsession with being way to curious about what everyone else is doing and likes to focus on their problems and not their own, this is why movies are popular, they let u look in to fake peoples lives and see the problems that they have. I think you can use movies in english because they make the movies about books and since books follow into the same pattern of letting us track someone elses life, it is very easy to take a book and make it into a movie
Its hard for me to find books that I really like. I definitely watch movies more than read books, but I like doing both about the same. I think movies are more fun because you can make it a social thing to do with friends. I also agree with funke that movies based on books are fun to watch to see if the characters are what you pictured them to be.
I agree with Funke movies dont show enough of the plot as they do in the novel. But I think the movie is always better than the book, most of the time since its easier to pay attention to.
I prefer reading a book first and then watching a movie. Movies help people remember some parts of the book they might have forgotten about, or help them actually see what is going on rather than just reading about it and trying to picture it in their head. Also, movies add special effects and music in the background which a person will not experience just through reading. I would choose a book over a movie if I had to choose. From my past experiences, I watch a movie after reading a book and I always tell myself that I liked the book better because there is more detail. The fact that you can't (usually) read a book in one day adds suspense and allows a person to predict what will happen throughout a long period of time rather than just watching a film.
I feel films relate to an Enlgish classs becasuse there are a number of films that have come from very popular English Litature and for some people they feel like they have to see the movie before they can read the book to get that image of what is going on in the book
America is a lazy country overall. I think most people would rather have a story shown to them then they would read a book. It's the same reason many books have pictures. I think it adds life to a story. Also time is a factor in this equation. While it takes only a couple hours to watch a movie it takes days for most of us to read a book.
Sometimes when a book is made into a movie they leave things out or add things and it just isn't the same or as good as the book. Sometimes books just shouldn't be made into movies.
I agree with Cory. I believe most people would rather have a story shown to them then they would read a book. But the book is always so much better. Things always get changed or left out of movies when the book was fine just the way it was. I don't get it. I would rather spend a week reading a Harry Potter book than spend two hours watching the movie.
We're lazy?! How did America become so powerful then, economically, militaristically, intellectually, technologically, and otherwise?
Maybe we Americans need to see immediate incentives. If we gave pizzas or money to people who took AR tests over novels, then even adults would be reading at a more rapid pace, agreed?
agreed!
When I read a book and then see the movie I often find myself a bit disappointed because of a part I enjoyed in the book was left out. I have never been able to read a book after seeing the movie though, b/c the movies are detailed enough that they still give away the book. It isn't any fun when you know what is going to happen. Just like watching a movie the second time is often boring... things are just better the first time you experience them. I agree with foster, we are lazy. Many people would rather spend a few hours to see the movie rather than a few days/weeks reading the book. Our country became powerful through the hard work done by the people in our past... they weren't lazy; we are! America is fat too.
I think that Americans look at it as being more convenient to just go and see a movie. We live in a society where we want everything and we want it fast, so why would people change that with their entertainment. People just become lazy and decide that it would be much easier to go and see a movie than to take time to read a book. I do agree that movies can provide an accurate visual and help someone to understand the storyline better at times, but what some people don't realize is that in movies alot of stuff gets changed or left out that could have made the story much better.
movies are so popular because they can see everything happening so the people watching feel like it could actually happen. movies can be applied to an english course very easly for a few reasons one the studen can get two different ways of learning the book one by just reading it and two by seening it so it help the student rember it better and aslo it can help the studen visulize what is really happening to to the charcter.
