College English

What have you heard from friends who are in college? What are their college English courses like? Why must every college student work on writing compellingly, reading critically and thinking analytically, the three main focal points of this class at BVHS?

I have heard many things. One is that their is alot more reading and writing. And it is a little be harder. One said that your class helped alot, and another said she really did not need your class, she just wanted you as a teacher.
Way to go Mr. Christensen.

Writing compellingly will help you sound more educated and will compel others to do something, buy something.

reading critically will help you draw more out of the story, article or whatever. To get you the reader more involved.

And that my friends is what I have.

My friends have told me college is nothing like high school. It is much more time cosuming. Even though you have more time off, you need to get your work done and not wait until the last minute. College is also hard if you play a sport. You have your practices and games, plus tons more of homework to get done Their English courses are kind of like College Bound. You write papers just like we do now, but there is more to them. They are much longer and take more time to write. Every college student should work on everything having to do with writing because they will become a better writer for all the essay's they have to write. I am excited to go to college, but I know it is going to be hard.

I think in high school students are taught more how to think then what to think- in college we are more free speak freely about how we interpret a book. Ive heard that teachers look more for our understanding of the book not what others think- you are more of an independent learner. You are treated like an adult and you have higher expectations and you will go as far as you want to go.

College is going to be a big step for us all, its going to be demanding but not to the point where we are over whelmed but more to a point where we are goin got be greatly challenged and because of this it is going to help us in the journey of life.

Mr. Matt Christensen said...

Mr. Schwint is so right: challenges help us improve. Without challenge, there would be no progress.

Mr. Matt Christensen said...

I tell myself this whenever "the going gets tough." Like at my USD course--I know it will require a lot of work, but I will be so much more experienced and capable after I do that work. Whenever I feel overwhelmed, I remind myself that the academic (course)work I'm doing is helping me to be a more aware, curious, and intelligent person.

Mr. Matt Christensen said...

College will be the place at which you "find yourselves" or "find your true calling." The people I met in college--and am still meeting as I attend USD's graduate school--are unforgettably important to me. They were, and remain, "salient," you might say.

I beilive that college English as well as college in general is a difficult yet exciting proccess that every student reading this blog is ready for many people coming from small town high school or even larger ones arent ready for the college transition but i beilive that the teachers at BVHS have gave us the teachings that we will carry with us through out our learning adventure

I know plenty of people in college and plenty who have gone to college but i still dont really know what to expect. I'm confident that I can handle almost anything i put my mind to but I am a little worried about how my previous education will stack up against other students

I have heard from numerous people that are in college that it is a lot harder than high school. They say that its a lot harder to get good grades because you dont have daily grades to bring up your grade and the hests are much more comprehensive than the ones that you take in high school and take a lot more time to study for.

tlais said...

i agree with sam, i have heard that from alot of college kids. They say that the tests are a huge part of the grades and there is not the daily work to keep the grade up. also i have heard that the papers that are written for college are graded extremely hard and a high school paper that recieved an a is worth about a b or c in college.

I haven't heard a lot about english in college (more about the math) but what i have heard is that it is harder and you have to work more to get a good grade. Not only do you have to work hard you have to care, ive heard that if you just go talk to the teacher they can give you the benefit of the doubt and raise a grade. i have also heard that there are english courses you can take that are all writing, no reading at all.

I havent heard much on what college classes are going to be like. I understand that they are going to take a lot more work. Its going to be such a huge step up from high school. Im just curious on how the format of the class is going to be like. Ive heard that its possible to only have two test grades the whole semester...that being said study skills are going to be much more important in college than they would be in high school

Mr. Matt Christensen said...

You just have to be able to study a lot on your own or with other people. In college, you have to demonstrate you've been paying attention each and every day. Professors generally appreciate when you've listened to them; they have a lot of knowledge, obviously, and most of them sincerely want you to glean much of their knowledge for your own use.

I heard that college English is fairly easy. The thing I am worried about is trying to add to my four page paper that I wrote in college bound. Adding on another 4 or 5 pages might be a little tough but it will some how get done. Other than the long papers I am stoked to get up to State.

I have heard absolutetly nothing about English in college except what Mr. C has told us.

I heard that English classes in college are a little bit harder than they are in high school (USF). Alyssa B. has informed me that Mr. C was a great teacher to have at the high school level and he really prepared her for college level English courses... so I think we will do just fine!

Ive heard that college english is decently easy. Ive heard its not much grammer and little assingments, but more writing. Very long papers, longer than ive ever written. But ive also heard that you can clept out of the first year of english and just take a basic test, so thats what im planning on doing and saveing some time and money. But well see what happens.

Well i have heard many responses from numerous students from different colleges. Some say that its tough and and challenging but all you have to do is show up and you will pass. Then others say it is really hard and difficult and barley pass. What most concerns me is the long papers you have to write on regular basis. But if i put my mind to it i beleieve i will do just fine

I heard from a friend that there is alot more reading and writing. With the help of taking AP classes and college bound English 12, I should be somewhat prepared. Every college student should work on their writing, reading and thinking, because when you get to college its a whole new ballgame. You're going to be on your own, and if you need help with something your not going to be able to run back and get help from the professor. Instead other students will help you, and will not always be able to cover everything.

WJonzy said...

many of my friends that are in college say that the one thing you need to have is good writing skills because the college classes are almost all writing.

Anonymous said...

Most friends is college say that they do alot more reading and writing. They also say that they enjoy the freedom so is adverages out.

For the most part I have heard college is really more like a leap than a step up in your education. Those I have talked with have really emphasized how difficult it has been for them to really adjust to being fully responsible for themselves on things like getting to class, keeping grades up, and studying regularly. I know that I will be able to do this once I have moved on to college but for me it is scary to realize the reality that I have to do that in order to be succesful in my own eyes.

Every student that is going to college must know to write because you will have to write a paper at some time and there is fewer chances to get a good grade to make up for a bad grade. Students that go on to get a Phd. will have to write a thesis.

I have heard that you will only have a few college classes each day making the day shorter than a regular school day. I've been told by a good friend of mine in college that there will be a lot of homework.

Some of my friends in college have told me that college is nothing like high school. It's not as catty and half the stuff you learn in high school you don't use in college (i don't know if i believe that or not yet). I was also told to hang onto all the papers I write, especially the ones you write in college bound, because you end up writing the same ones in college. My sister for instance, has used a paper written in high school for college and received an A.

I have a friend that goes to Iowa State and she said she had to write an advertising analysis paper also. It surprised me. She also said college was a lot harder and you really have to work for it more once you get to college.

I have heard that the English classes in college suck. They take way to long, and most of the time end up BS's their way through the whole paper. I have also been warned that partying can screw up everything, and that its best to keep it to the weekend. College student work on writing compellingly, reading critically and thinking analytically because those are the main focal points of college classes along with high school classes, and the instructors are looking for intelligent input in the class room atmosphere.

People who I have talked to that are in English courses in college say that they arn't easy. They said to keep every essay you right in high school because you can use them in college. They also said that you write right alot of essays. I think college English will be alot harder then I think.

5andersont08 said...

my friend said they write a lot of papers up at sdsu. He said his most recent paper he had to write was a 2 page paper on the word why? I think its good to use thinking reading and writing becuase it prepares you for college and later on down the road. If you practice these things you will be a better student and you will be more successful.

My friends and brother tell me alot about college. Andrew studies all the time. Whenever I call him, even on weekends, he is at the library or in his room studying. Other people from college have fun though. They say it is alot of reading and writing papers. It is kinda scary to think that will be me next year. I hope to get good grades like my brother but I also hope I don't have to study as much as he has to.

Pollard--haven't you asked Jenna about college English courses?

5hansoneROCKCHALK said...

I have talked to many different alum's from BVHS about college life and what courses I need to be taking in order to stay ahead next year in college. When talking about specific subjects, like English, I've heard that college English courses are similar to College Bound English 12, but even more analyzing and interpreting of different novels, short stories, and poems.

The expectations in college English are much higher just b/c you're out on your own and need to learn to read & write better, b/c w/o reading and writing comprehention, our world would be much more dull and boring.

I have heard that college will be slightly more difficult only if you make it that way. I believe if you manage your time well and get into good habits from the start of your first semester you will be fine. with this class this year preparing us for college, we will all be prepared. I asked my cousin about his ad paper and he said it was very difficult for him so do. Now that i got mine done i'll have even more free time. reading house on mango street is also going to help because this is a book read in many college settings

"It's not as catty and half the stuff you learn in high school you don't use in college (i don't know if i believe that or not yet)."

There is less cattiness in college, but there are still some petty social conflicts. And you use everything you have ever learned. Everything you have ever learned will be "used" sometime, in some way. High school trains you to be used/accustomed to learning, so you can be a lifelong learner.

...and without effective communication, our world would be much less intelligent, efficient, productive, civilized, capable, and stable.

A lot of the people that I've talked to are reading or have read the books we've read in College Bound Eniglish 12. One of my friends had a class where she had to write a 1 or 2 page paper every other day. That's pretty intense! I think this class has prepared me very well for college and I know I've learned so much about writing, analyzing ads and books, and about different cultures. You're a fabulous teacher Mr. C. Thank you :)

Everybody i've talked to said that they are reading the books we've read in here or other higher level thinking. I really wanted to drop this class because I was having a hard time but now this has become one of my favorite classes because it's helping me prepare for where ever i decide to go, whether it be college or tech school. so thank you mr. c. for taking your job seriously and being an awesome teacher

My brother really like college boung english 12. He told me he loved reading all the books. He said that college is way different than high school. In high school he never studied. But now in college he actualy has to study other wise he would fail.

Honestly, when I see college students the first thing that pops into my mind is definitely not how are the English courses. Students in college are expected to do things at another level because after college that's it, you're on your own. Most of the time, there isn't school for people after they graduate college. In order to get good paying jobs you obviously need to be intelligent and show that you can form a sentance. I also think that we will need to read more critically and analytically because we're not going to have the teacher who takes us step by step through everything
