How does the media (television, film, radio, billboard, magazine, newspaper...) affect our impulses, decisions, value systems, and culture at large? Is everything you wear a type of advertisement, because it says something about you? Is your car? Is your hairstyle?

The media affects our impulses, decisions, value systems, and culture at large. The media affects our impulses by say the TV shows something that is on sale only through the next day. Your impulse would be to go right then and there and get it before the object is all out and the sale ends. The television affects our decisions on what to wear, what to eat, what music we listen to, and what kind of cars we buy. The media also shows different kinds of value systems. If the media shows something that is bad and only puts negative comments about it, the people that are watching is are going to think bad things about that certain thing and may not want anything do with the their value system. I think that everything we wear is a type of advertisement. The labels have a big thing to do with clothing. If something has a label on it, it advertises the store that they bought it from or say the brand name. It says how much money you have in my view. If someone is wearing a top brand, they probably have enough money to buys those brands. For istance, The Buckle. You can go there and buy a $90 pair of jeans and people know they are from there because of the logo. Your car is also an advertisement. Again it shows your style, what you like, and maybe even how wealthy you are. I don’t think your hairstyle is a type of advertisement unless someone sees your hair and likes it, and then they use the same one. That’s the only thing I can come up with when your hair would be an advertisement.

Tara-- Does our hairstyle say something about us? Do we communicate, non-verbally, with our hairstyle? Does a mullet reveal something about our personality? How about a flat top? A mohawk? Dyed hair? Long hair used to be an absolute sign of rebellion. Is it still? I've never had hair that is "different," nothing even close to outrageous. I'm pretty boring. Only when we played in the Dome during high school did I do something wild with my cut. All of us teammates got together to show unity--and to buzz strange shapes on our heads. I think one's hairstyle can show a lot.
Tara--I forgot to compliment you on your intelligent, analytical post. Thanks!
I would have to say that the media really does affect our way of life. Like if you see an actor/actress that you really like you might try to act liek them and buy what ever they buy just because they did. I would have to say if we did not have all the famous people doing what they do then i do not think that many people would go out of there way to buy expensive stuff or act the way we do now. i would say that billboards and the radio are the worst at trying to sell stuff because when you are driving along the road you only have a couple of seconds to look at it and on the radio you can hear it but there is no visual to go with it so would be harder to sell stuff. I would have to say that the radio is better then billboards though.
Yes, what you wear tells a little about yourself. Lets say that you wear old, stained, and ripped jeans that means that you are either really poor or that to are cheap, i think that you dont care what other think about you because you probly have it worst at home then at school. Then lets say that you wear all the name brand clothes like holister or abercombie and finch that mean that you have more money to spend and that you want to look nice all the time.
Yes, if you drive a P.O.S. vehicle it says that you might not have a lot of money and you dont get everything you want from your parents, now if you drive a really nice car u more likely then not have more money and got more stuff then others , unless they bought it them selves then it means that you are a really hard worker and a good person to rely on.
i would ahve to say that hair sytle is not as judging as the others but it still has a factor in what people think about you. lets say if u spend like along time doing your hair it well probly get naticed by other and then you get the people that have hair sticking up on all end that get noticed even more because it looks bad, then you get the people that just fix there hair for a couple of minutes, those are the ones that dont get as much notice as much.
well thats all that i have to say for now for that question

I am having some trouble with my wording in my second sentence. Can you help me?
High Fashion, high price, and high class are a very common focal point of today’s society and many large advertising businesses. Although high fashion clothing and accessories are advertised everywhere you look including the general public however, these items are primarily directed towards the upper class, which only consists of about one percent of the United States population (Wikipedia). Juicy Couture is one of the many high fashion appeal lines produced in the United States. Juicy Couture is a contemporary line of casual cute apparel, sold in many specialty stores. Their clothes are often associated with the many celebrities who wear them (Wikipedia). Their slogan “Made in the Glamorous USA” consumers believe that when wearing or using Juicy Couture products they will be more glamorous and sophisticated.
Thanks,

Everyday the world is bomb barded with advertisements from the media. Everywhere you go, look, and even hear you are being influenced by these catchy sales tactics. I think the radio influences us a lot more then we think. Just think of when your in a car driving, your paying attention to the road, or at least suppose to be, so your eyes are not seeing these ads but you are hearing them. As I'm driving into Sioux Falls and i hear over hot 104.7 that there is a big sale going on over at a store i always think to myself if i would need anything from there. These ads, as much as we don't think we are influenced by them, really do attract us.
The media greatly affects everything about socity. The way we should look, act (well even how not to act ie. Paris Hilton, Britney Spears, Lindsay Lohan, and others), Why does the media have so much power? And Why are we niave to fall for such propaganda? thoughs are the questions we should be asking ourselves. There are groups who fight the norm, and mostly its through music expecially Rock and Rap. Gothic people fight the norm as well. Most of their clothing style is unisex, it is not uncommon to see a male in a corrset or a miniskirt. Through their clothing style they are sayin' that we should not be so plastic, and be who we want to be. No one will ever be Barbie or Ken or a GIJoe, who represent the perfect human specimen. Dr. Frankenstein in Marry Shelly's novel created a hidious monster out of the "most beautiful body parts". So pretty much do not give in to such propaganda nonsince. Be you, ignore everyone eles who say what you should do, what you should have, how you should act(well listen to the government).
I've noticed that certain ads will only be on during certtain times. I was watching football the other day at work; durring the game they needed to take some time to evaluate the play, so they took an unscheduled commercial break. In the break I counted 3 commercials for Bud Lite and 2 truck commercials. It amazed me that there were this many commercials durring a time that there weren't even supposed to be any. These companies must've payed top dollar just so maybe they could put up a commercial durring one of the "no play times." The fact that a company goes to these lengths to reach us is proof enough that these ads reach us and effect our life styles.
Ads. are everywhere and they infultrate our life. Whenever someone is looking for earcleaners they ask stores "where are the q-tips" and when someone needs a tissue they ask "where are the kleenex" they dont say "where are the puffs" and a lot of people dont even know they're doing it. Companies like those have monopolized the market for their products.
The media does a great job at luring in viewers. To get some one hooked on their product or interested, they will relate the ad to the person in some way. The media also does a great job at decieving the consumer. They will show and tell the viewer only what they want to have and want to see. By lying to our minds, the media/advertisemnts build our minds up to live off of lies. An example of this could be something like a exercise equipment commercial. On that commerical the spokesperson is going to be telling you all the positive things. They won't tell you that you need to use the product so many times and week, but just how long in time you need to do it. The person will also not tell you that you need to eat right in order to stay in shape. By doing this, all your mind is going to think is that if you get this product, all you'll need to do is excercise whenever you feel like it and not worry about what you eat. Because the media is such a large influence in our lives, we will be only building our lives and goals off of what want to see instead of accepting what is actually present.
I beleive that everything we wear is a type of advertisement. Fashion companies do a very good job of slipping in a bit of "free" advertising with out the consumer actually realizing it. Wearing certain types of clothing such as named brands not only shows who you are, but shows off where you got it. Lets say you're wearing a pair of Nike shoes and a friend comes up to you and wants some like it. They probably are not going to remember what color and size they are, but who makes them. Why? Because they saw that unique Nike "swoosh" logo on it.
My car is somewhat of an advertisement because it has the Ford logo on the front and back of it. It also shows a part of who I am by saying that I like to go off road, or I like power versus speed.
I really don't think that hairstyles show that much of advertising unless your a girl in sports and use those athletic headbands. (no offense to female athletes). To me hairstyles can mean something. If I see a person with their headshaved in a certain way, mainly males, I will probably think that they're in the military. But if I see some one with longer shaggier hair, I'll think of a skater or "rebel".
Wow, LHenning! You're really doing a lot of critical thinking. I think your points are terrific. Our hairstyles say a lot about us. The cars we drive do, too. Just look at what people slide into at our high school's parking lot. You could look at a person's hairstyle, car, handwriting, and room to learn a lot about them. However, it is a tightrope between looking on the surface and learning what people say about themselves and prejudging/stereotyping them. We must be careful when examining anyone/anything. This practice of looking more closely is what we worked on during our ad analysis exercises. The ad analysis essay is something I will definitely continue to include in College Bound English 12. So much depth. So much awareness. So much excellent writing.
I really enjoyed to do the advertisement analysis essay, it helped me notice the tiny messages advertisers use to lure in their viewers. One that comes to mind is the example showed in class for chew or hunting equiptment or something that in the ad their was a man that was wearing a red shirt that you could only see around his neck, which of course is supposed to signify rednecks. My ad I'm going to have to say was a pretty easy one to tear apart because it was a TAG Body Spray ad that had sex written all over it. But over all i think, Mr. C, you should definately assign it for next year, because it was one of the funnest essays i have ever had to do.
Mr. C, you have to keep this essay! It was by far the most interesting/fun essays of highschool so far. I believe that the project helped me in my advertising analyzing skills. Whenever I'm watching TV with people they often tell me to shut up because I ruin the commerical by telling them what strategies are being used to lure them in. Now, I find it amusing to watch commericals as I sit back and think just how dumb some people are for believing some of the stuff. With the help of doing this essay, I now will think twice before being drawn in on advertising.
